Hello all! I recently got a Droid Ultra and I am costumed to using Wi-Fi tether on my Droid Razr. I had it rooted and used PDA Net Wi-Fi tethering. I paid for it and it was well worth it. I wasn't able to get the Wi-Fi tethering to work on my Ultra, only the USB tethering. It looks like we need root for tethering. Has anyone found a solution for Wi-Fi tethering on the Ultra?

Hi,
You might want to look at this thread:
[MOD][4.4.4]Native Tether for Build 23.3.24

Have you used this method? It sounds so easy and to good to be true. Does the Ultra not have a built-in recovery to make backups with? Sorry for all the questions I just want to be careful. Thanks!

No, I haven't, because I live in Europe and we have no tethering restrictions.
It should be safe, as you only need to modify/replace the build.prop, which can easily be reverted, if you back it up beforehand.
But I replied a bit hastily, I haven't read the thread carefully, you need to be rooted for doing that (or have unlocked bootloader with TWRP installed).
I don't know if there are any other methods, which doesn't require root.
What's your build version?

I am currently not rooted. I don't think there is a great root option for the Droid Ultra on 4.4.4. I was hoping I didn't need root for the tether.
You can gain root, but not an unlocked bootloader (no custom roms/backups, etc). Once rooted, find and download the entitlement exploit to tether. I'm using it daily and it works fine.

What is the easiest/best root method for the Ultra?
Just check out RootJunkie's youtube tutorial, follow it to the letter. Not easy, or quick, but it works great IF you follow his directions.

I have a rooted Verizon droid maxx. I am really worried about losing root if I take the ota. Is there any safe way to take the ota without losing my root? I've read like 2 posts of people saying the pro version of supersu and Survival mode keeps root. I've also read 1 post saying that they accidently took it and didn't lose root. Can anyone confirm this?
I would like to know the answer to this as well. I was just prompted for this update.

Considering that you cannot downgrade to a exploitable version of android if it doesn't work, I think I will pass.
Here is a guy that did it and said he keep root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52763259
I believe the one that did it accidentally had an unlocked boot loader which makes root possible no matter what.
I saw another post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52795898
Saying that the biggest part of the update was the radio which can be flashed without taking the whole upgrade if you are worried about it.
Me personally, my BL is unlocked and I'm going back to 4.2. I've seen nothing but negatives (bad battery life, FC's, etc) with the updates. I might would stick it out if there was some new features but they seem like just more of the same.
I used survival mode and took the ota and still have root. Unfortunately I lost my WiFi tether and am trying to get that back now.

Maybe I'm brain dead. I thought I had TWRP on these phones after SlapMyMoto, but I guess it retained the stock recovery.
Too many Android devlices... can't keep track of what's running what.
I thought the big issue was not retaining root, but completely losing the Write-Protection off ability (ie ability to use xposed). I'm locked bootloader and don't see a reason to unlock.

Not useless. Can root, remove bloat, use ad blocker, tether, some people are using xposed, etc. Just may not be able to run any custom ROMs yet. Safestrap may work to run custom ROMs, but I have not seen an NC1 kernel module. So you would not have WiFi running safestrap on NC1.

They will hardbrick if they attempt to install CWM or TWRP on TW 4.3 or KitKat firmware. Hasn't worked before when people tried using Odin or GooManager to install custom recoveries on VRUCML1 and I'm confident it will be the same result here. I need video proof proving the opposite.
If you are referring to Towelroot, yes this will work on all three.

Potential Bootloader Unlock for Non-Dev Edition
Sent From My Droid Ultra
I'm sorry and I assume most of you will disagree with me, but 45 dollars is a rip off to have my phone rooted. I've never had a rooted android but I had a jail broken iPhone and I did love it, although I would never had paid for it, I don't see why I would invest such a high amount onto something that will never bring me more than advanced customization(I'm assuming that all that root does as its all that jailbreaking seemed to do) maybe I'm saying this because I'm not a developer myself and I don't work on these things, but having my phone rooted will always seem as a low priority. If it were 5-10 dollars id probably give in because of temptation to have cooler feaututes on my device. Anyway this is just my point of view and just wanted yo share .
