In the bounty thread for root, someone mentioned that jcase already had a root method. Is that for real? I don't need s-off, I just need root.
Mods, I guess I have a cross post in the international thread.

Hi XDA members,
I just got my TF300 and its awesome but I have a question... should I root it?
I have a galaxy note that I've rooted and love but what are the benefits of rooting this tablet? I mean the dpi can't be adjusted on this can it? What more functionality can a custom rom (for this TF300) offer? Unlocking the boot loader will void my warranty which is a huge trade off for rooting.
I'm looking to the XDA community to sway me to root or not...
Thanks in advance for your feedback
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I rooted because I wanted to use titanium backup coming from my previous tablet. Imo it's definitely not worth losing your warranty to install a custom rom. Rooting will not cause you to lose it but unlocking the bootloader will. I'm waiting until it can be unlocked with a different method before I worry about custom roms.
So there is a way to root without unlocking the boot loader?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda premium
Yeah there are plenty of exploits to root/install recovery and rom without unlocking - Wolf's exploit and my One-Click PERI root tool work. (see my signature) and there's apparently another sparky apk and plenty of info in the dev section.
"I mean the dpi can't be adjusted on this can it?"
I dunno where you heard that, but it can. Use the DPI adjuster app.
It allows a host of features and tweaks that I love, but it's not for everyone. Just weigh the cost/benefit, but you can always unroot unless you unlock. Unlocking isn't necessary though as of now.
Benefits to root on this tablet...pretty much the same for any android device..
You can debloat and remove unwanted apps using titanium backup. The advantage of using TB as opposed to disabling through ICS settings, you can permanently remove them, and u can remove system apps that you wouldn't be able to disable through ics settings. TB offers plenty of other useful features.
You can install adfree or any other ad blocking app of choice.
You can tweak the performance of your tab by apps that require root access.
You can install other useful apps from the market which requires root access.
Rooting does not void your warranty and can be unrooted, so why not?

Being rooted allows you to unlock the bootloader which allows all the magic that happens here. If you are getting a hox now make sure it does not come with 4.0.4 installed as there is no root for that yet.
I don't think you have to be rooted to flash a recovery. You just have to unlock your bootloader and flash a recovery via adb command.

On AT&T you need to be rooted to unlock the bootloader, as the bootloader unlock is not officially available. But on Rogers, you can unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery, AFAIK.
In short, root just gives superuser privileges. So you have access to system files, can apply mods and apps that require root (but not flashed in recovery) etc.
Bootloader unlock is required if you want to flash custom ROMs, radios, kernels, custom recovery, etc.
So I am on ATT and I got the one x shipped to me and it will be here tomorrow so there will be no rooting for me until someone finds an exploit I am thinking

You can reduce the majority of the bloat in an unrooted stock phone running an ICS firmware by "disabling" the unneeded bloatware system apps by going into the stock app manager, then selecting to view all apps, then pressing on each system bloat app you don't need, and hitting "disable" in the app info dialog that opens up. Disabling the system apps makes them invisible to the system and the app drawer. Thus, they can't be run by you or the system until you enable them again. Thus, they don't bog down your phone and trash up your app drawer.
This works for the majority of the bloat that comes with AT&T. I did this while I was waiting for the famous 1.85 root method. It made my wait considerably more bearable!

I have a rooted Verizon droid maxx. I am really worried about losing root if I take the ota. Is there any safe way to take the ota without losing my root? I've read like 2 posts of people saying the pro version of supersu and Survival mode keeps root. I've also read 1 post saying that they accidently took it and didn't lose root. Can anyone confirm this?
I would like to know the answer to this as well. I was just prompted for this update.

Considering that you cannot downgrade to a exploitable version of android if it doesn't work, I think I will pass.
Here is a guy that did it and said he keep root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52763259
I believe the one that did it accidentally had an unlocked boot loader which makes root possible no matter what.
I saw another post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52795898
Saying that the biggest part of the update was the radio which can be flashed without taking the whole upgrade if you are worried about it.
Me personally, my BL is unlocked and I'm going back to 4.2. I've seen nothing but negatives (bad battery life, FC's, etc) with the updates. I might would stick it out if there was some new features but they seem like just more of the same.
I used survival mode and took the ota and still have root. Unfortunately I lost my WiFi tether and am trying to get that back now.

Maybe I'm brain dead. I thought I had TWRP on these phones after SlapMyMoto, but I guess it retained the stock recovery.
Too many Android devlices... can't keep track of what's running what.
I thought the big issue was not retaining root, but completely losing the Write-Protection off ability (ie ability to use xposed). I'm locked bootloader and don't see a reason to unlock.

Not useless. Can root, remove bloat, use ad blocker, tether, some people are using xposed, etc. Just may not be able to run any custom ROMs yet. Safestrap may work to run custom ROMs, but I have not seen an NC1 kernel module. So you would not have WiFi running safestrap on NC1.
