Fast 3G Data?? - General Questions and Answers

Im about to purchase a 3G Phone. I ask the guy is 3G very slow and he replied back with:
" Downward 2.8 Mbps uplink 384 KBPS, Download speeds of up to 5.67- 7.2 Mbps".
I asked is that considered slow or decent and stated that its a faster version of 3G.
Are those specs faster than regular 3G??

That's pretty standard for 3G, but it also depends on the network and a bunch of other variables.

Captivate already has hsUpa enabled?

I look at phone status it says hsdpa some times and hspa the other half which I'm assuming means hsdpa and hsupa? Not sure if this means anything.

Can you provide a screenshot of when this happens and run a speedtest and tell us your results? This would be very helpful as many of us, at least myself, do not believe I have HSUPA enabled.
mine is sitting on HSDPA right now... while i'm sitting in bed.
HSUPA is either disabled in firmware or AT&T is actively restict the upload speed for Captivate. Anyway I have never seen my upload speed higher than 300 to 400 kbps. If you have HDUPA enabled, you should see 1mbps upload speed as my friend's iPhone4 can consistently demostrate.
HSDPA is for download speed. If you get download speed over 500kbps, you have HSDPA. Mine can often get to 1 to 3 mbps.
HSUPA is for upload speed.
Yes, HSPA is NOT HSUPA.

thanks for clearing that up... after i posted i did some research on the d and the u... then felt like a moron.. ohh well we only live once.
How can you check what your download speeds are? What app do I use or is it already in the phone?

I like Speedtest from the market. Its pretty solid. or you can go to m.dslreports.com/speedtest from the browser (use the iphone speedtest there).
Well hspa is high speed packet access which can refer to up and down link, how do I screen cap. Or do I need an app for that

I used speddtest and got 1.4 megs download so I guess I'm running HSDPA also

you have to root the phone before you can screen cap.
There is really no need to post any screen cap. Download the speedtest app from market and report your results.
The Cap has HSDPA, but not HSUPA. Do some looking on this forum you'll see where others have analyzed the modem.bin file from the Captivate vs the one from the Vibrant. All of the HSUPA stuff has been removed from the Captivate version. You can get HSUPA on the phone by flashing the I9000 modem file to the Captivate. Data works great, people were regularly getting 1.2Mbps upload. But they had no voice out on telephone calls so it was worthless. Same with the Vibrant modem file. Also, those only supported 1900MHz, not 850/1900 MHz, so if you are in an area where you have 850MHz 3G it wouldnt work at all.
Its been clearly established there is no HSUPA on the phone, AT&T has completely removed it from the software (although the hardware does support it). The last hope is when Rogers Canada gets their version of the Captivate, if they leave HSUPA enabled, that modem.bin file may work on our AT&T Captivates properly since they use an extremely similar network and the its a Captivate, not a Vibrant or I9000. When I said HSPA is NOT HSUPA I meant that just because you see HSPA in one of the menu settings in the phone that is not HSUPA.

Post your speeds

Well heres mine.
Was connected to HSDPA 2.55mb down and .29 up......rather slow.
3.54 down and 1.6 up

We should see a solid difference once the backhaul work is done. It will display the h+ anywhere there's 3g.

not bad, i could get those speeds from my nexus one but not my inspire...very uninspiring
Stock
2120 kbps Down
108 kbps Up
I can wait to root this thing!
On HSDPA I am hitting 3.3 down and 370k up.

Did anyone else realize that the bottom cover is actually the phones antenna? I just figured that out...
On HSPDA used the FCC app to run the test... 3.02mbps down, 0.29mbps up
Seeing these speeds are scaring me away from switching from T-Mobile to AT&T. On T-Mobile I get 4.70 mbps download and 1.32mbps upload on a Nexus One on hspa (3g) and not hspa+ (4g). Damn I want a new phone already, the inspire is a great piece on hardware!

AT&T has deployed HSPA+ to virtually 100% of our nation's fastest mobile broadband network, which enables 4G speeds when combined with enhanced backhaul. We are rapidly expanding enhanced backhaul to cell sites throughout the country, adding new cell sites weekly."
Something isn't right here. I've gotten of 3mb/s on my captivate.
The enhanced backhaul part is what's gonna get you higher speeds. It's not a new network or anything. Once it's done in a given area it also has to be "flipped on". That's pretty much what we're waiting for.
I've gotten up to 3000 down, 1900 up on my rooted captivate at my home cell site, but haven't broken 1600 down and 500 up on the non-rooted stock Inspire at the same place.
I have a rooted Captivate running Cognition and my Inspire is testing faster. You can run the test 30 sec apart and get wildly different results though.
im getting 3453 down and 423 up on HSPA+
Where is you location? Your the first with hspa+

which speed test website r u guys using? and which program to test speed? on opera i get like 6k down n on stock internet i get like 4k down. im in DC. im pretty sure opera compresses the website so it makes it move faster but idk. mine is pretty fast. especially @ night.
i use mobilespeedtest.com
on speedtest.net i got 3.44mbps down and .26mbps up. first try
4.17, .29 second try.

Does Nexus S support HSPA+?

I recently noticed that my 3G speed is much faster than ever before and I live in one of the city that recently added T-Mobile HSPA+.
I was just wondering if Nexus S supports HSPA+. Thanks!
I believe that the NS (I9020 and I9023 variants) have a max download speed of 7.2Mbps and max upload speed of around 5 Mbps, so it is not HSPA+ capable.
It's true the NS, has a max download speed, of 7.2. However, T-mobile's network (at least where I live, supports 21 mbps theoretical speeds (and will be, updating to 42 mbps soon...woohoo) and I regularly see speeds in excess of 6mbps... Upload speeds of almost 2 mbps (1.75 ) so, technically not HSPA + but, not bad either....
Everytime T-mo updates their network everyone sees a boost. You just won't, ever see speeds above, 7 mbps cuz the phone isn't capable of it.
Sent from my NS running NSCollab cuz I lost my tin cans and string....
HSPA yes. HSPA+ no.

hsdpa vs umts

Ok so I bought an HTC inspire 4G and it has hsdpa network and I'm normally getting 2.3 Mbs download. I went into the ATT store and the Samsung infuse uses utms and it was getting up to 5-7 Mbs download speed.
I read other forums that said hsdpa was suppose to be better. If so can anyone please explain it to me. I'm all about network speed and I wanted to know if I should just get the infuse or will the hsdpa improve later on.
Hsdpa will get faster speeds once its turned on in your area. For example in Austin, Texas I get 6mb down with the inspire. The Infuse also has hsdpa. In some areas utms is faster. I'm a huge HTC fas so I will always choose HTC over other brands. If your leaning toward Samsung wait until the Galaxy S 2 comes out for ATT.
Overall you will not feel much of a difference on the phone... you can have a nice and fast looking speedtest but the difference will be within seconds.

agree on that
att stores also setup their own in store micro cells so it looks like they have phenomenal service when you try stuff out in stores.
I'm getting about 6M down, 1up in good coverage area
I am speaking HSDPA with AT&T in east suburbs of Portland, OR. I do hit 7M down though somewhat routinely. Giddy / tingly when that happens . Oh and phone is still totally stock. Since Gingerbread OTA reportedly coming in a couple weeks by this forum, gonna wait until after that to root...skert...never rooted before, but I'm fairly certain I will at some point.
Edit: With Inspire 4G
I've had UTMS coverage on my Inspire 4G...
I saw it one time when I geekin over starting to get such high speeds, and checking what kind of network I was on a lot in the >About Phone setting. There is a youtube of a dude with an Inspire 4G when testing network speeds (and *****ing that it was slow...probably because HSDPA was not turned on in his area yet) that had this show up on camera. He acted surprised and didn't know what that meant. So my conclusion is that Inspire 4G supports UTMS...why I duuno
EDIT: The youbute video where a guy has UTMS coverage on camera on his Inspire 4G is entitled "Is AT&T Misleading about HSPA+ on the Inspire 4G"...well I'm happy with my speed so whatev's.
I was getting speeds like the OP with HSDPA at first
but lately i think AT&T has been sprinkling the magic "4G" dust on the towers around here, because my speeds have obviously improved dramatically, and the HSDPA status hasn't changed...
UMTS = 384 kbps.
HSDPA = 3.6 Mbps (much higher lately on att).
So I'm not sure what was happening with the phone you saw.

I wasn't speed testing when I saw it it in my About Phone menu. I was in my employers cafeteria showing someone else where to check for what network one is currently on, and I saw the UMTS on my phone. Only saw it one time. The video name I posted is about how the H+ icon(in his opinion) is a sham, because it doesn't specify "3G". When he popped about settings it was on UTMS was visible in his About Phone menu. He made some comment about he didn't know what that was all about.

Lg Nexus 4 vs Our phone data speeds.

Hey guys sorry if I'm posting in a wrong section. I want to ask someone with more knowledge than me..
Our phone is "4g" we know hardware wise it supports up to 21ms download speeds.
Even tho its running on a tmobiles 42+ network hpsa.
And the new nexus isn't "4g" but will it run in those higher speeds than our phone does? Since later "4g" models for tmobile like s2 are running faster than our sgs4g..
It just seems confusing because nexus isn't specifically made for T-Mobile, its made for entire world.. so will they actually utilize tmobiles us 42+ speeds? Or will the nexus be slower than our phone or on par or faster?
If u have any clue please let me know since I'm thinking of buying this phone from Google for $299 off contract so I can use it on my prepaid unlimited T-Mobile plan.
THANKS

Yes, it's been confirmed that the Nexus 4 will support HSPA+ 42 on T-Mobile.

I'm in the SF Bay area and I typically see 2-5 Mbps down on T-Mobile. While driving, I can't reliably receive a 128 kbps stream. Even if the modulation supports higher speeds, if the back haul isn't there, does it matter?
Seems a bit like bragging that your farm tractor has a speedometer that goes up to 200 MPH.

Lust to add the Nexus 4 will get "4G" service just not LTE 4G.
So in other words nexus 4 data speeds should be faster than ours correct?

No it will be the same.
How will it be the same if our phone only supports up to 21mbps?

The SGS4G supports the fastest data speeds available on T-Mobile. HSPA+ is up to 42mbps the radio can receive UP to that speed but the verifiable speeds is 21mbps.
Remember until Verizon started using LTE HSDPA+ was the industry 4G. And worldwide HSDPA+ is the current standard for 4G.

Actually, our phone radio only supports theoretical speeds of 21 Mbps. It most likely will never reach this unless everyone else gets off the network and you're the only one left. Without going into much detail it basically can only receive a certain amount of transmissions making it limited to 21 Mbps

The way I understand is the radio's are the same. However T-mobile has manipulated the output to access 42mbps down if it is available. The network is 2100mhz and that is what the 42Mbps uses to transmit on T-Mobiles network. The SGS4G has access to the 2100mhz frequency so theoretically it should be capable of those speeds.
I only state this because I have researched this a ton since the Nexus 4 was "announced". I plan on moving to straight talk with their t-mobile sim. And want to make sure I can utilize the network to its fullest when Im in a 4G area. I know when I was in St. Louis I was able to download faster than my cousins Droid Razer on LTE.
So based on what u guys are saying.... no matter hspa+ or "4g" label ... nexus 4 shouldn't be any bit slower than galaxy 2 or galaxy 3 on tmobiles network.. correct?
