Question concerning development. - X Style (Pure) General

So I made the mistake of dropping into the OP2 forum to see how development was going over there and was surprised to see a tasty selection of roms and kernels already. With the invite system and delays it actually left me a little worried. Mainly because in my eyes the camera and lack of NFC and SD card make make the OP2 the obvious inferior device. So my question is what do developers look for in a device? Specs certainly but the Pure is certainly right there. With the stigma surrounding the 810 you might even give the edge to the Pure. I wonder how much the Nexus 6 is/will hurt sales of the X Pure. I mean let's be honest here, the Pure is just a slightly upgraded Nexus 6. I knew this coming from my 6 but I really just wanted the better camera. Hoping this device attracts some plenty of developers because it is a worthy device.

Give it a week or 2. Thats my opinion

Well technically the OP2 has been out for 2 months longer and a lot of people here are barely starting to get their devices. We already have someone working on CM and I was reading Viper is in the works. Just wait patiently something will come up soon, as soon as something does the rest will follow quickly after that.

I'm pretty sure there will be some excellent development going on here, just a feeling.

Should I buy Nexus S?

I'm about to order a nexus s. I'm currently on motorola milestone which has a locked bootloader so I can't make my full custom roms. Is nexus S a good deal or I should know something about it before buying?
Advice would be really helpful.. thanks in advance.

there are like 7 pages in another thread about this.. go read that
yes its a good phone, people will probably come here and troll and say that its not good.
If you have to ask you should buy an iPhone.
lol ^ this
I just don't get why people make these threads. There are just so many of them, and in the end.. the OP is the decider. We as users don't decide whether or not you get it. We shouldn't be here just to persuade one person to get a Nexus S, you're posting in a forum where the majority of the users have the phone. So obviously, its going to be biased posts.
Go do your own research and figure out if its for you. Especially when there are so many other threads about this.
^ it's kind of hard for them to decide based off others opinions on the NS. This board is "General" meaning this is where someone would post a topic like this. And the OP isn't asking for unbiased opinions on the NS, just pros and cons. Would you ask this question on the Thunderbolt forum? Probably not...
A question like this is tailored specifically to the person asking, regardless of there being other topics similar, they OPs own question and answers they receive are unique.

No but if you were to ask. Should I get a Thunderbolt or a Nexus S on a Thunderbolt forum. Of course the majority will say Thunderbolt. And there is another "Should I get a Nexus S" thread with the pros and cons listed.
I was asking myself this question 2 months ago and ended up buying it. If I could go back I would have waited for the next successor for the nexus s. That being said, if I had to buy a phone right now I would get it
I think there are a lot of these threads and on the surface they seem silly especially to ask in the forum full of fans. But I also think it's valid, who better to ask about a product than someone who owns it. Maybe the bothersome part of the question is not what he asked but how he worded it.

If your are really looking for a solid reliable phone that has the bootloader that can be very easily unlocked to flash roms and root it in 3.5 min lol then this is the phone for you. I know there's alot of people on here saying that yes you should get it no your getting obvious good feedback on a forum full of people that love this phone but you'll need to look at the pro's and cons tho. First is that I went from a Evo 4g lots of developers on that bad boy then to a g2 still HTC and lots for developers working on ports everyday then to the nexus s all in about a month. now I do have an amazing phone nothing really to complain about BUT that if your a flashaholic there really isn't much which does stink but if you have found a great rom with all the features you need in a everyday use then your good like me. I have found the best rom with performance built right in with great battery life and all the nice little features that I need to keep me happy. Then there's the cons Samsung made this phone and porting and roms wont be flowing out the door. there's a few features that a lower phone really can't say lower but the galaxy s phone have the glitz and Glam of features that where taken away to give us the pure google experience. So the media hub is gone the TV out put features the this the that is all gone but if you like to have a really stable newish 2.3 out the gate then I would get it. I had only seems pics of the nexus s and I normally do a full look over and see YouTube videos on the good and bad but I took the leap and got it off Craigslist and didn't do the homework and man was I surprised I'm so happy I got it for the price I did and how sweet this phone and the potential it has.

For what it's worth, I'm probably returning my NS. After the iPhone 4, Desire Z and the Atrix in the past few months, the NS feels CHEAP. I hate even holding it. Especially since the N1 was one of the greatest phones I've used in terms of it's design.
I would vote for the Atrix, its a dual-core, it's smoother that the NS, yes, you don't have too many roms, but who cares... it works really well with the stock after you freeze Blur.
I hope Google doesn't cheap out the next Nexus.

I purchased the phone the day it released, and it's still my favorite.
Picked up my Nexus S a week ago. I have owned them all, and this Nexus S is my favorite. I had the iPhone 4, and it was like a toy compared to the Nexus S. The Atrix has nice hardware specs, but the Nexus is just as fast and isn't locked out from ROMS.

Anybody gonna return their HOX for a Galaxy s 3?

Looks like preorder for GS3 on June 6.
Anybody jumping ship.?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
I am going to, if I can. The multitasking problems, the locked bootloader/s-on stuff, the 2GB RAM on the GS3 are the main reasons. I looked at some very close-up pictures of the GS3's screen compared to the HOX and Captivate (the two phones I've owned), and I think I can live with pentile at that resolution, although I'd still prefer the HOX screen.
Oh well, there's never one phone that gets everything right. If I end up stuck with the HOX I won't really be upset...it's a great phone. I just think there are enough small factors adding up to convince me to switch if Wal-Mart/ATT will let me. I'll find out tomorrow.
Not in the slightest. As an owner of the HOX and also the Note, the difference between Sammy's Pentile and the HOX is astounding. Take a look at the SGS3 and HOX in direct sunlight before making a decision. Also, angled viewing is bothersome at best.
The only solid leg-up that the SGS3 retains over the HOX(L) is the MicroSD slot. Is it worth jumping ship to get an extra GB of RAM (which I highly doubt anyone will use), a MicroSD slot and a second-rate display? That's a personal question, I suppose. Personally, for me, I would say no.
Also, with regard to S-OFF: Why do you need S-OFF so badly? We can write kernel images without s-off and it appears we may be able to write to the radio block device as well.
I've thought about it, being as I've always had a Sammy. Buy I'm loving this phone and wanna give HTC an honest chance. The phones are near identical internally. Sammy has more ram and possibly a bigger battery depending on the carrier variations, but I'm effin loving this screen. Coming from a gnex this screen easily destroys all. Dev is popping up very quick. Bootloader is unlocked. We have workarounds for s-off and kernel flashes. The only irk I have is the radio blackouts that I gotta airplane mode to fix, which will be fixed. Plus having owned many Sammy I know how awful and slow there software support and version upgrades have been in the past.

+1 to this.
It also astounds me how many people are so wishy-washy and can't make their own decisions about what device to keep. So many threads about "should I buy this phone" or "should I return it" on here and other device forums. It feels like the OP want someone to hold their hand, and make decisions for them. Just do the research, compare the phones in person, and make your own decision. Its not rocket science.
And every device has flaws. I don't care if its made by HTC, Samsung, Apple or whatever. No electronic device is ever perfect. Are you going to get the GS3 and start threads on whether you should return that too? I bet there will be plenty of those types of threads, too.

I know what you mean, but I can understand the other side, too. Many (most?) people don't have the spare cash to buy a phone off-contract, ever. They have to make a decision, soon, and then live with the consequences for two years. Coming from two years with a Captivate, which was a nice device with some nasty flaws, I can relate to the anxiety.
BTW, thanks again for taking the time to write a long and helpful answer to my root/unlocking question!
I'd keep my one X if I didn't have my data drop every few minutes, if my wifi didn't do the same, that's is just unacceptable from anything you buy. Imagine buying a car that would turn off every 5 minutes, and you have to wait for the dealer to say 'Ok, we got a solution, now you can fix it'. I can't wait forever for a software update, and that's HOPING that's the problem. I use my phone for business and it's costing me money.

Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha
no.
I like the HOX but I'm probably off this ship. HTC needs to stand up for itself in the American market, but the locked bootloader feels like ATT was throwing its weight around a bit here. Yes, the android dev community finds ways around 99% of things, but I'm still waiting for either an official bootloader unlock from ATT or a new 1.85 root exploit so I can run SuperCID and get in on some of these ROMs that are cookings. Unfortunately for me, I was having huge data drop issues on 1.82 and I went to 1.85 hoping it would be the fixer. It's not bad but...I have a feeling some of the roms (Nocturnal and CleanRom look amazing) fix this issue. While I don't mind using ADB to push things to my phone...and I can follow directions pretty easily, there are just some things I didn't feel confident doing, like using a Hex Editor to spoof my CID that way....so if you're on the Locked, Stock 1.85 ship, it's a pretty awful ship to be on. The HOX is a great phone, but the lack of stock to get a new unit (perhaps it was a hardware defect) to get to rooted, unlocked 1.85 had me going back to an iPhone in an instant. Hopefully either HTC or ATT has an actual solution which makes getting to ROM land even better, because it's a damn shame to see this phone in such a precarious situation.
The SGS3 seems like where I'm headed because on the whole, I've just had much more pleasant experiences with Sammie devices. With a few minute differences (slightly different low-light camera performance, and minutely visibility differences in super-direct sunlight), they're the same phone, one just has a larger battery and expandable storage.
If I was a mod, you guys would be in trouble.

No. The HTC One X is superior. It's faster in almost all benchmarks, I think on the review from engadget it lost in one benchmark to the SIII and it was barely. The screen is, in my opinion, way better. The physical phone itself is way nicer looking and I like the fact that it's constructed from poly.

While I'm sure some people are genuinely curious, a majority of these threads are being made by indecisive people that are insecure about their choice and want to feel backed up.
We should all know the pros and cons to both of these phones right now.

Note got run over... time for a new device, how is the HOX development, active?

So, my note got run over, and I have an upgrade available... so I think I am going to use it on a new device. I hate the lag with the S3 chip in the note, so I want to go with either the galaxy s3 or the HOX. The HOX is a bargain right now, at $99, and seems hard to resist. BUT, I hate hate hate bloatware, inlcuding sense and touchwiz. So whichever I choose, has to have an active developement community... particularly AOSP, and even better - cyanogenmod. Is this device getting attention from CM developers for CM9 and 10 or is activity slowly dying down now that the galaxy S3 is out?
First thing you should do is take a peak in the Development section and judge for yourself, seems pretty simple because it is that simple.
Development has been held back because of kernel source but that was all just released this past week and things are actually picking up quite nicely. I won't explain any further because 30 seconds in the Development section will open your eyes better than my writing can.

The S3 has a lot going for it, but it's no contest on which has the superior screen, especially with outside viewing. That to me is the biggest differentiator. Development should pick up now that the source (for 4.0.3 anyways) is out.
Sent from my HTC One X
The development community is moving forward here. I personally would choose the One X over the SGS3 every time, but that's just my opinion.
My HOX has been Nocturnal'd. Has yours?
Yeah just as others have mentioned, it took a bit before kernel source was released, but even then we had quite stable CM9/AOKP builds, and extremely nice sense ROMs. But now that source is finally out I think we can expect lots of future development, with Jelly Bean builds of CM10 and AOKP out before too long I'd imagine, and custom kernels already being released. Both are really great phones but IMO especially for $99, I'd definitely take the HOX over the SG3.
If you were going to.make the decision based only on the development progress made on a device we all have to be honest in saying the s3 is the clear choice considering we just got source. But as far which device I rather own and live with I have to say one x. But you'll there's plenty of threads comparing the device if you search the forums.

This phone has good hardware the software is fine too but right now all development is either into a stock rom with different features or some built that mostly work. I say wait before flashing anything too major I have had so many small issues that are because of things not being updated on OP or just too many pages or the developer themselves or sudo developer just releasing things they have no idea what they do. Just hold a while and give it some time to flourish. I would root and unlock the bootloader now and just sit pretty.
Really wish I had gotten a Galaxy Nexus instead of this phone tired of messing with phones to have a working good rom.
I Had s3 along with htc one x. But screen of s3 sucks when compared to htc one x especially under direct sunlight. If You compare both phones screen side by side u will understand the difference. But if ur ok with super amoled screen then go with s3 because always having extra ram is good

I did not blame any developer in my post and thanks for assuming I do not know how to read. I know how to read very well and have been modding and messing with devices since I was a child. What I am referring to is more than one post in which the supposed developer or person just relaying what they found does not know anything about what they are doing and posting things they " think work " I have no problem in testing things for a developer and letting them know and I have in fact donated to developers that work on the One X specifically.
I just have run into at least since I have had my one X where I have flashed a file to say add something for sound that messed up the video because the actual OP did not seem to understand what his flash was doing.
But I guess I will stop posting if giving advice on development and my opinion on the current situation rubs you the wrong way..

Dead Doubleshot means new phone for me.

Just because the forum has been started doesn't mean there's anything worthwhile going on...
What I meant to say was it takes a while to build up choices for roms, kernels, mods, etc. Not all the dev work happens at once.
Worthwhile mods usually come later in the device age. Especially if there aren't that many devs on board yet

Which makes me want to buy one.
I don't really feel like devving for my S3 because every time i've needed to do something it's already been done.
At the point where every day I have to defer the OTA because I havent felt like figuring out how to disable it. (It's rooted with a cwm, so OTA won't install, but it nags me to install daily.)
I mean I got root, eliminated some bloat, tweaked a couple settings here and there as I have been going through it, then installed cwm to block the OTA, but my motivation to do anything to it is non-existent. Just feels like it's all been done before.
Not that i've had a lot of time recently, but mostly all of it has been spent on the doubleshot.
The other one is a popular phone that's been out for a while. There really aren't a lot of dev challenges to awaken the device and free it from the manufacturer/carrier lockdown.
I'm definitely not done with learning how to get around that aspect of smart phone existence, and the way htc and t-mobile burned us on the doubleshot still presents a lot of learning opportunities. In the future when I do upgrade from the doubleshot to a new device i'll hit the ground running and just do what I want from the device launch. Learned (and learning!) the process of what's needed from launch to full custom ROM has been very enlightening on the doubleshot thus far.
The packet-switching technique baked into the HTC kernel was epic. When I found that drifting through source, and then tracked down all it's pieces and got to see the puzzle put together - well damn.
The relay being a samsung makes it instantly more dev accessible, truthfully the carrier is the biggest roadblock to freely devving on the device. You can pull on a larger pool of knowledge across xda for beating that then combined with manufacturer hindrances deliberately placed at the level htc employs.
Between what i've owned and what i've experienced, the quality of the physical device from HTC is the highest on the market. From a dev standpoint, that is the most important factor in my opinion. The thought is that we can fix software issues, but are stuck with hardware problems.
(to that end my education is leading me further into hardware and building computers chip by chip - got a raspberry pi and stuff like that to explore now...but a subject of another discussion)
HTC needs to make the next evolution of the doubleshot. Quad core S4 with at least 2 gigs of ram and a better keyboard then this one. Goodbye genius button, hello search button, and get rid of the damn question mark as a primary key. NFC capable. TV out mandatory. I'd be on it at full retail price for 3 of them at launch day. 2 for me, one for my lady - so one for me to dev on and one to use.
The relay is almost it...but i've got no desire to move from the doubleshot to it, just not enough more to justify it. I'll probably buy one in a few months secondhand to dev on so I can participate in the next solid hardware keyboard device while we wait for the generation after to have one.
When the doubleshot devs and relay devs upgrade to the generation after hardware keyboard device, we are gonna own it. All the other people floating around out there who skipped the doubleshot/relay keyboard phones and miss their G2 will want another one like it. Predicting the future is never an exact science, but what I see in culture and trend gives me that feeling.
My biggest gripe about the S3 is losing all of the hardware keyboard shortcuts. NFC offsets that a little bit, but it destroys a significant asset in navigating and using android fluently and quickly. Tapping your way to something you can just tap a two-button sequence for is like a school zone dumped on a 70 m.p.h. speed limit road.
If another hardware keyboard device doesn't come out by a year from now, then the relay will be the upgrade when I decide my doubleshot needs NFC. Otherwise i'm probably going to bang on the next one at launch.
So far I am really impressed... I will be rooting probably tomorrow before the debate lol. And yes... I will sell the Doubleshot for parts when I decide not to fix it, a decision I've already basically made. So far... the ONLY thing I miss is my flashaholic fix lol. My Relay is nice.

I'm pretty sure it isn't, but is the physical home button also a directional pad?

No it isn't and I have been missing my optical trackpad some too lol. I had grown accustomed to it.

Should I trade my One S for Galaxy S 3

Hi the title says it all I'm thinking of trading my One S in for a Galaxy S 3 I just want to hear peoples opinions and thoughts on this matter

Specs wise they're both beasts. Enough so that it doesn't matter which one wins which benchmarks.
The most important difference is the size/feel in your hand. If the SGS3 feels good to you, then sure, go ahead.
Personally I find it too large and too plasticky. And of course anyone whose taste and opinion are different than mine is a moron.
If you want bigger and sharper screen, more storage, better/larger developing community, better support from Samsung for updates, removable battery, better 1080P recording then yes, if you're aren't bothered by those areas then no.
Although I wouldn't buy anything now, when we have the LG nexus 4 and supposedly a HTC nexus 5 (specs may be the same as the HTC butterfly), which will be announced on the 29th October.
Out of the current phones, which are on the market, I would get the one XL and RAZR HD instead of the GS 3.
Well I like the idea of extra storage space and more dev support, the fact you don't need to unlock the bootloader is a plus for me
I did go down town today and held a GS3 and it felt comfortable in the hand the size wasn't really an issue so I guess that's the decider

If I had the offer to trade my HTC One S for a Galaxy S 3 I would do it in a heartbeat lol. I still haven't even opened my One S mainly from all the bad news I read about it here.
I came from the s3 to the one s. Don't miss it. Removable battery and more storage were the only plus Imo. I like the one s feel and build a lot better. I had to run an extended battery on my s3 because there's mysterious battery drain on every rom. My buddy has a Verizon s3 and even with lte his oem battery would last twice as long as mine. It's all about personal preference and if you want a bigger phone and more storage the s3 would be good. Performance wise the phones are pretty equal.

What bad news?
The chipping?
My black one S is still in perfect condition apart from the USB port area, had it since April.
The signal?
Never had an issue with it, signal has never been as consistent as what I would have liked, but since the last update, it is more consistent and mostly full bars instead of 3 bars and the voice reception has dramatically improved when I have H/3G data connection.
Touch button issue?
Never had that.
Only thing I am disappointed with is the support from HTC for updates, but then again there isn't much else they can improve apart from improving wifi and mobile reception even further and plus the support for the X isn't any better. The NLED sucks compared to the GS 3 NLED.
Remember just because people report problems, doesn't mean that it will apply to everyone, hardly anyone will ever come onto a forum to post the positive things, only if they have a problem, plus unfortunately there seems to be a lot of one S haters on this forum.

You're letting the warranty go down without even using it. It would be better to find about the problem now when you still have your warranty instead of opening it two years later, finding a problem, and having to cover all the costs instead (i'm not implying it has a problem, but it could do)

All of those haters will be gone once this phone get a little old, then the good people will stay and others will leave, and then this phone will get some good attention.
I plan on keeping this phone for a while, 2, 3 or 4 years.
Thanks Guy's very helpful info. I guess I was disappointed in the hboot issues and seeing how many are having issues after updating up to 1.14 and all. I'm used to flashing freely with my old nexus S and my new GNex and everything i read in here has been very disappointing. I just worried I made a big mistake since i got one of these for everyone in my family lol. Thanks again, I been thinking about saying the heck with it and keeping it, i just can't see the point in having 2 phones. It really is a wonderful phone for normal users. It doesn't seem to need root except for getting rid of the bloat, using root required apps, volume wake and theming. Thanks again guy's made me feel better lol.

Yeah I hope so!
Likewise, although not as long. I find 4.3" too small now and want bigger! Love the note II screen, but the device is just too big to carry in my pockets and comfortably use with one hand. Plus, I personally can't see HTC supporting this phone for long as it isn't very popular and they have released a ton of other android phones and will be releasing even more in the next few months, meaning the S will get even less attention. Hope to get 4.2, but I have a funny feeling we won't or if they do, it will take forever......
Root and flash ROMs is an option. I had a read through the guides last night, after reading that we won't get JB till December (although I probably won't see JB on my phone till January) but I really cba with doing that again and flashing a new ROM every other week and then encountering annoying niggles.
So yeah, I will see what the LG nexus 4 is like and possibly other nexus devices largely due to updates/support and bigger screen. Although I do prefer sense overall compared to stock android, but I want a phone, which has good support.
Unfortunately the build quality and looks won't be anywhere as good as the S
The RAZR HD looks like a great option as well:

If your entire family have one, then surely you know what to expect
BTW you can disable most of the bloat by going to settings>apps>click on app you want disabled and then click "disable" in the top right corner. Although you can't disable some stock sense apps like the launcher, browser, maps etc.
