Just wondering everyone's take on the two, as I'll be ordering my moto x pure on friday.
If the warranty is voided by unlocking the bootloader, how does squaretrade work? I've never used them.
Moto's plan is much cheaper overall than SquareTrade. When considering the up front cost and deductible. And Moto's plan can be used twice during the 2 year period. For me the choice was easy.
If doing a claim with Moto is a slow hassle, it will be no worse than claims I've had with Squaretrade.
Do you have to buy the phone through moto to sign up for motocare? I got it from Amazon.

If you purchased the phone on Amazon, there's not an option under "My Stuff" on the Motorola site to purchase Moto Care. They know about it and are working on a fix so those of us who bought from Amazon should be able to purchase it soon. I don't have the link on me, but in the Motorola support forums there's a thread about the issue.
Went ahead and signed up for moto care, too good to pass up. One cracked screen will pay it off

I originally had the motocare in my cart but after reading the fine print I decided against it. They don't cover lost/stolen and if the phone has excessive damage they also won't cover it. I don't plan on dropping my phone and running it over but you never know and I don't want to have to worry about if my device is going to be covered when I send it in.

No basic warranty covers lost or stolen phones. If you want that covered, thats what home owners insurance is for. If you tied a string to your phone and to the back of your car and dragged it, obviously it won't be covered. Accidental damages are fine like drops on the floor and what not. But if you dog got to your phone and chewed it up, that probably won't be covered. Pretty much anything that can be repaired will be covered.
Square Trade is good.
I've had a tablet and a camera claim.
Tablet - they gave me a full refund on a two year old device.
The camera, they sent a replacement in a week.
Square Trade doesn't care about software. They warrant a device.
I also read the fine print and decided to forgo the Moto Care, since the the payout on a cracked screen is low enough to make it not worth it. However I'm very curious about these two companies handle real world issues.
If its true that Square Trade is cool about refunding a whole device after two years, then that makes their 3yr $40/year plan a great deal.
Tell me what happened to your camera and tablet. Did they charge you the $75 deductible when they replaced them?
I just cancelled my moto care and got the 3 year square trade for $119.99. It covers up to 4 claims. Hoping I'll never need to use it but I'm sure if I do, 4 is more than plenty.

You also have to take into account possible RMAs if you get a bad version. Newegg also doesn't charge tax in certain states. So those small things could be the deal breaker if you want to save a little money.

I highly suggest Amazon. It's $398 there also and if you have a prime account you get free 2 day shipping.
Amazon has by far the best customer service out of any supplier I have ever purchased anything from. If you have any problems at all the CS takes care of it fast and easily.
I tend to get as many electronics as possible from Amazon because they give me an ease of mind should anything go wrong with the device I know there won't be any hassle to return it.
Also, there is no sales tax (at least here in texas there isn't not sure about where you are located) making the price almost equal to the bestbuy deal I believe.

Optimus Prime offers the best advise. Buy it where you have the best return policy. I am on my second TF and some members have returned theirs multiple times for different issues. My screen died and the new one I replaced it with has worse screen light leaks than the first one and I would like to return it if it gets any worse. Get yours where you will be able to return it without any hassels if you need to. On the TF, I would probably advise buying the 1 year replacement insurance from your retailer so you don't have to box it up and send it off to Asus repair facilty in Texas after your standard 30 day retailer warranty policy expires. I have read some real horror stories...

I have bought quite a few tablets. The TF is a great device but has manufacturing issues. I like my TF, it has the most storage of any device currently out there. My 32GB TF with 32GB MicroSD and 32GB SD has more than I should ever need. The screen resolution is the best, the battery dock allows for 16 hours of use, handy on my overseas flights. To answer your question, I think if you wait for the perfect device, you will never see it. I will buy them as they come along and be educated on each one...

Agrees wholly with mixtapes08. The cost for repair makes all the difference.
For reference, doesn't the Infuse 4G cost $100 on a 2year contract on AT&T? No need to repair at all, if you're willing to go on contract.

Yeah, I can see that. And by the sounds of it, he wants to use the phone on his AT*T network. So why not just purchase a new phone which is basically equivalent for the same cost without having to spend more to repair it?
Just offering alternative ideas, yo. Of course, if the OP wants specifically the Nexus S, then that's also cool.

Update: now his friend is offering a fully working nexus s for 120$. I think ima go for it
it will cost a good penny anywhere from $90 to $180, I know becuase mine is cracked. The screen and the digitalizer are fused together so you'll have to replace both. the screen is 75.99 on Amazon and u need the double sided tape as well which is like 9.99 on amazon. I called samsung they quoted me like 120 to 200.
I dropped my phone yesterday and cracked the glass. It's still functioning but very annoying to use and I'm sure next drop will finish it.
What are my options?
I've called Rogers (our carrier in Canada) they want $345 to fix it and I've called independent shops. They want anywhere from $205 to $245 to fix it (I'm assuming these would be aftermarket components).
What if I buy the components from ebay and do it myself. Is it doable?

I have just recently replaced my screen and was in the same boat as you. The part itself is around the $200 range where-ever you look. Yes, they are expensive screens.
Depending on your skill level, I found it fairly easy to replace myself but there are some repair shops all over that charge minimally for the actual repair; myself, here in my part of the Country (by Calgary), I charge $40 for the repair.
Don't know if that helped you or not but the site I got my screen from is cellphonepartscanada, just have to google it.
about $150 to do it yourself.

Not sure what's sexy about shelling out $100 plus $120/year for a phone you got for $49 originally. I dropped Asurion after the three replacements they sent failed within days or never worked at all. Clearly what they send out are usually returned items from Verizon's stores. Verizon gave me a $100 credit and a new phone after I complained to a tier 2 supervisor.
Paying monthly plus a deductible just never made sense to me. Better to get a good case and if it does break either wait it out to buy it for your next contract or Craig's list it. You'd get a better deal.

Never bothered with those sort of plans. Last winter I slipped on ice and fell on my S3. Fortunately, I had a good solid case and the xGear tempered glass protector. Bottom line, phone suffered NO damage. XGear protector did it's job sacrificing itself which I was more than happy to replace with another.
I'm also told some Homeowner's policies can cover electronics such as phones.

Because if you ever have any defects past the 14 day period you get the extended warranty on your phone = 2 years instead of 1. Also you get FREE overnight shipping which is $15 for them to ship the warranty replacement to you. Otherwise they give you free crappy media mail which takes like 3-5 days for you to get your replacement phone.

I've used them for my Nexus 7 and they were pretty fast in resolving the claim. Their price on smartphones seems kinda high including the deductible (it's half the cost of a new 32GB Nexus) so I passed on it.

That price is absurd ($125 for two years with $99 deductible). Most repairs cost less than the plan + deductible. Assuming the most common claim is a cracked screen this plan is a ripoff. Squaretrade used to be a good deal.

If you have either homeowners insurance or renters insurance, ask your company if they cover phones as an "additional insured" item. Mine does, and covers the full amount of the phone with no deductible for $7 per YEAR. I've only had to use it once in the past, but it's great for those who are careful with their phones but just want that extra security. HTH.
