How to completely wipe phone - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my wife in her infinite wisdom, bought a Galaxy S6 off some guy at her work to replace my aging HTC M8. The catch being that he forgot his Samsung credentials, so he couldn't log in, and therefore is selling the phone to make up for his stupidity.
Before buying it, she checked the IMEI and its clear, along with the fact that the guy had all the original stuff that came with it, and it was almost brand new.
Now my question is, how can I bypass this? How can everything be erased for this isn't an issue? I've odined it to a fresh ROM, even Nand Erase All, but its still stuck with it. I know previous versions there was ways around it, but I can't seem to find one with this.
Currently running AT&T build G920AUCU2AOF3, which I believe is 5.0.2.

The phone is still logged into his old Samsung account? That shouldn't happen if you reset the phone. It should boot into a fresh rom with zero accounts connected to the phone

Yes. Especially if he used the NAND Erase All.

Whilst off. Volume up, home button + power button. Boot to recovery then format device, erase all user data. Unless the previous owner had cerberus installed, as this inhibits the power button when locked....

The previous owner was an older guy that probably forgot his screen lock, googled how to reset it, found a tutorial on XDA, and messed that up. He had that "I have no idea what tech is" vibe, so I doubt he had Cerberus installed.
How does the Samsung Reactivation lock manage to stay on even over a fresh Odin install?

Any ideas?

Flash twrp and factory reset and format

Bump.

Check out my SM-G92xx Helper Post, link in my signature below...

A simple hard reset (phone off, volume up+home key+power button) should do the trick.
I bought my phone on Swappa, and even tho the seller already did a full wipe, I still did it anyways and it started the phone with the initial phone set up where I had to sign into my gmail, samsung account, etc

Id use samsung smart switch. It wipes and downloads then flash the latest firmware for your phone

my first go at galaxy s.. x3

i just spent the last few hours getting to know these new phones i bought. i purchased 2 captivates and 1 vibrant off ebay this week, just picked them all up. they were all locked. the first captivate was easy to unlock, unlock code worked fine. the vibrant was weird, i first had to enter the unfreeze code, then the unlock code in order for it to work.
now for the 2nd captivate.. it was a bit more of a hassle. the item was listed as "locked" which i assumed was locked to the ATT carrier.. but was actually locked because of too many failed attempts with a swype code i believe. it prompted me to sign in with the gmail user and password (which i didnt have of course). and even worse, i couldnt use the button combos to get into download mode or recovery mode. i searched through threads trying to find out if there was an alternative (tried sdk) but didnt work. when i plugged it into my pc, and messing around with the vol +/- keys, i managed to get into the phone without the code or user/pass request. i thought sweet, now i can just wipe the phone, but when i tried to, it asked me for the code once again. i ended up working my way into the accounts, and added a new google account to the phone (it wouldnt let me delete the original). then once i restarted the phone, i could now login using the new account. i ended up going into the phone settings, and it let me set a new screen lock, which i was then able to use to privacy wipe the phone and start fresh.
i figured this could possibly be useful to some people, so id post my experience with it if anyone else had/has the same issue. im just glad i managed to do something with this phone.. i thought i was going to have it goto waste.
i have to say, so far im loving this phone (a former iphone 3gs user).. froyo is quite nice!
how much did you pay, if you dont mind me asking...
Paid 300 for each with original boxes, manuals, cables, plus cases and screen protectors. I'm in canada so didn't have much other options besides being off ebay

[Q] .:!!!URGENT!!!PLEASE HELP:. galaxy s2 illegal intervention check

I went on our service for samsung today because my sgs2 had an issue with app crashing and it was basically unusable. they said i have custom rom on my phone but i never touched any software hacking whatsoever. the phone is mine i am the first owner.
and the service guy took the phone and showed me a screen that is similar to the hard reset screen that you boot with the button combo. and there it said that there is one illegal software intervention or something on the phone. so they told me they can't fix it and i have to pay 240 euros for a hardware part. i went home i hard resetted the phone now and it works. but i want to check that screen again. if anyone knows that would be a huge deal! thanks so much in advance
update. i found it. it's called ODIN MODE. now i want to erase custom binary download counter. i have the official samsung binary. i found an option that uses usb jig. i don't want to use that but if there is no other option...can this be done using the odin software
First, you are no more important than any other user here, and just because yours says URGENT, it is not.
You can't reset the counter without a JIG and depending on your bootloader version you might need ODIN too.
Example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888
But this is for the g-note, do some research first.
Depending on your bootloader version, the jig might not work. Flash an old bootloader /rom to be sure it will work.

I done goofed

I recently bought a Samsung Blaze from my friend who upgraded to an Iphone 5 for $50.
I really enjoyed the phone, but being the autist I am I couldn't handle the bloaty pink addons that tmobile had provided. In addition I had numerous prompts about how my phone couldn't complete wireless calling due to my dated prepaid sim card.
I decided to use keyes to upgrade to ICS, which provided no new differences.
I then decided to go to my local library to root my phone on a windows machine.
During my first attempt I was rushed, and ended up soft bricking my phone.
My second attempt was sucessfull in rooting and installing the clockwork mod.
I tried downloading liquid smooth and installing it, like a moron ( i assumed all roms would work with any device considering that I really couldn't find a specific set of roms for the device). I ended up hard bricking it.
Now, what do I do?
Can I go to tmobile and play dumb, despite the fact that I do not have a contract with them and just a prepaid sim? Would they offer a replacement even without a receipt (its got TMOBILE plastered all over the front in that respect).
or
Should I just play dumb with Samsung? Say that my power went out when installing ICS on kies and my phone wont turn on? Will they send me a refurbished one?
or should I just sent it here mobiletech videos .mybigc om merce.co m/s amsung-gala xy-blaze-4g-jt ag-bric k-repa ir/
It might be nice to have it unlocked and rooted, and I guess I could have them install a rom I want in that event.
Any insights are much appreciated.
I've hard-bricked my Blaze once. All I did was send it back(not in store) and get a new replacement one.. As some people suggested, have you tried getting in download mode? ROMs as you've learned don't work with any device. That's why we have a separate forum for our device . Which LiquidSmooth did you use? In the Dev forum(for the Blaze) we have a LiquidSmooth ROM..
Neither T-Mobile nor Samsung are obligated to replace the phone for a number of reasons, but you could give calling them a try if all else fails. Samsung might be willing to replace it if it has been less than a year since it was purchased, but my experience with them is that they wont honor a warranty without a receipt if you're not the original owner.
First try getting the phone into download mode and using ODIN to reflash the stock rom tar, following the directions of course: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601
You really can't hard brick this phone... I've even wiped all partitions abd got it back..
Get it to download mode and you are good

To specify, it is not reacting to any button presses at all. The soft brick that I previously did just made it freeze at the tmobile spash screen, which I fixed by returning to stock.
I cannot currently turn on the phone, nor get it to download mode. I will not indicate if it is charging, and plugging it into the computer brings up "improppertly removed media" prompts on my computer screen.
I only have osx and linux, so I kind of rushed when the library was closing and downloaded a stable version of liquid smooth, turned on usb storage on my phone, then launched the zip file from clockwork rom manager, just as some random web page told me to.
When you said you returned it back, did you mean tmobile or samsung? Did they ask for receipt or for your sim card to still be in the device; or did they just take it and give you a new one because it was clearly marked as a tmobile device?

Bought a N920T, Can't use, please help!!!

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm new to this!
Here's what's going on.
I bought the device, turned it on, and it opens to someone elses LOCK SCREEN. Maybe I shouldnt have but I immediately factory reset.
During reset, says "E:failed to mount / preload (No such file or directory)" - Was it rooted before? When I turn it on, I get the google lockout "please enter an email address previously associated with this device". Obviously, I have no idea what that is. Person who sold it to me says they don't know what i'm talking about. I just want to use the device (Don't necessarily want to root it, but only beacuse I'm afraid of bricking. I'm not opposed to the idea, and I rooted my galaxy nexus way back when) Obviously, because I can't get to the settings, I can't enable debugging or OEM.
BUT - The device DOES enter download mode! Does this mean I can flash a factory image? If so, will my google lockout problem even go away if I do? Note 5 came with 5.1.1, which is when they implemented the lockout; would 5.0 run on a note5 at all?
Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a stock factory image flash via Odin is the best thing you can do. Who knows what is on that phone.
+1. Odin to stock. You can get Odin and the stock image from Tek's sticky at the top of this section.
Here's the thing, if you met face to face you should have tested it. If you purchased it online, should have been reset. Sounds suspicious to me. Either the seller isn't being honest or, not to accuse you, you are not. Let's assume the seller, verify the imei number with swappa or another service and see what that tells you if you haven't. I would be cautious using the phone, hopefully it's not going to be an issue for you.

It is very sketchy. I don't blame you for being suspicious of me, but I will say that before I reset the thing, the person's lock screen had a new email notification, which listed their address, and I did send them a message asking if they lost a phone. I would be fully willing to return it at no cost if they responded to me saying they did indeed lose it, but that hasn't happened, and it's been a while.
You sound like you think I should just dump it? I'd like to either find out if it's missing or use it, but if you think something might happen to me, maybe I will? What do you think could happen?

I'd try to use it. Worse case scenario it gets blacklisted and they turn it off.

Oops, sorry. Well, thanks for your help. It'll take a few hours to download the stock image but I'll let you guys know what happens.
When I'm just flashing stock I don't use a kernel or anything like that, right? I'm usually the one getting irritated at people for not using the search function, but when it comes to CFW/Smartphones I just always want to make 100% sure I know what I'm doing. I don't want a $400 brick.
I really appreciate all the help!
I don't think you can just flash stock and beat this. If you cannot anyway, there's another forum called.. GSM something or other, and I've seen people post they can beat the Google email requirement with a black box.

The E failed message always pops up when factory reseting a Samsung phone and the email requirement is part of the previous user activating the reactivation lock. If a hard reset is done with the option enabled the phone is inaccessible till the original email info is entered. Maybe seller forgot to deactivate it b4 selling, happens a lot actually. Many ppl activate it on initial phone set up and forget or don't know exactly how it works and sell without turning it off.

You can and will be locked out of the device permanently if Odin fails. It's best to contact the seller and get them to clear it by entering the required info or just get your money back. Next time check your stuff before you buy. And how come you didn't in the first place? Your story doesn't exactly add up or exist.

You know what dude, even IF my story didn't add up, even IF I stole it, what are you, the police? Why are you in here picking a fight with me man? You really think I'd STEAL a phone and come to these forums with a made up story? You don't think I'd make up a BETTER STORY? I could say it was a girlfriends and we broke up on bad terms, I could say anything and it would be easy to lie about. You need to calm down and have some common decency, please.
Have you odin'd to stock yet? And, no you don't need to flash a kernel. The stock image comes with the stock kernel.

A lot of people come here after they have stolen a phone. Funny thing you didn't go off on the other person that said the very same thing. I asked you those questions because someone else did and you didn't answer them. And just so you know, no I'm not a cop anymore. I was simply seeing what you would say. You need to calm down and look at it from the end of the spectrum. I don't know you, and I don't know if you would come on here after stealing a phone with a made up crappy story. Not like that hasn't happened before from others.
I was simply trying to help you but whatever. If you didn't steal it, hope it works out and you get to use your phone.

Stuck on Verizon screen?

Hey I'm new here. I have a question wife's phone is stuck on Verizon screen(red screen with Verizon and logo)
Blue light on phone is solid.
I've tryed everything and it won't go past this screen. Idk what to do at this point. I didn't do a factory reset due to all the photos and stuff will be lost? Called Verizon and they just told me it means it's time for a new phone? Is that true?
It happened to me once, i'm not sure what I did to solve the issue but don't worry, you don't have to hard reset, maybe you can try plugging the phone to your computer and use Kies or Smart Switch. Keep looking on Google or other web sites

Stuck in same exact place.
Samsung chat offered to fix for free, due to this happening immediatley after OTA update but I had to call voice samsung support. No luck, they said factory reset....
It's been a while since I've been on these forums and I"m cleaning the cobwebs out....
I've tried all soft resets, recovery mode, cache clearing, etc, nothing. Tried Kies, SmartSwitch, nothing.
Here to educate myself on using ADB(Drivers are installed) Odin and any other community tools to replace/clear/update/downdate, etc so that I can boot up.
What tools are there that will allow us to replace stock os with previous version so that we can save our photos?
