I normally have my Nexus 5 phone WiFi connected to my home network and have Data turned off.
If I move out of range of my network obviously the phone's WiFi connection drops.
When I return to within range of my home network my phone doesn't automatically reconnect to my home network. I have to press the power button on the phone to wake up the screen and within a couple of seconds the phone connects to my home network.
When I first got the phone I never had this issue. The phone would reconnect to my home network even though the screen hadn't been woken up.
When I got the phone it was on an older version of Android .. before Android version 5.
I have run the phone in Safe Mode and the automatic reconnect still doesn't occur.
So on Lollipop 5.1.1 should the reconnect to WiFi be automatic ?
I have thought of either doing a factory reset or a clean install of Lollipop but would like to know if the WiFi reconnect does work on Lollipop 5.1.1 before I resort to wiping the phone.
Can anyone confirm please if their phone does automatically reconnect to WiFi without them having to wake the phone up first ... thanks.
Don't have to wake phone but occasionally it will not properly reconnect, I have to go into WiFi settings and click connect. Its pretty random.

Well I decided to reinstall Lollipop 5.1.1 using the factory image.
After the factory image install I tested the wifi reconnect issue before making any changes. The problem still exists.

Pretty sure this is a Lollipop bug. My N5/N7 will do it without going out of range.
@ldubs Are you using 5GHz band per chance?

Before reinstalling Lollipop 5.1.1 I too would lose connectivity to my home WiFi network periodically while still in range of the network.
I put in a workaround on my DD-WRT router which has stopped the periodic losing connectivity. In the wireless section of DD-WRT I changed the Beacon Interval to 50 and also changed DTIM Interval to 6. I started with 4 for the DTIM Interval and increased it by 1 until the connectivity was stable.
My phone is connected to my router using the 2.4 GHz.

Interesting that your Nexus 5 reconnects to your WiFi once you're back in range without first waking up the phone.
I take it you don't have any apps that have anything to do with WiFi.
I was just making a new post about this problem
I had same issue when i was on 5.1.1 (unlocked bootlader + rooted + xposed + gravitybox etc) but i always tought something breaks auto connect and didnt care so much.
When i flashed 6.0 (locked bootloader + unrooted ) everything was fine about autoconnect.
But after installing nova launcher prime + tesla unread it broke again.
Do you using 3. party launcher?
I did a clean install of 6.0 (marshmallow) and am using the default launcher and unrooted and yes my Nexus 5 auto-connects now

Wait...wait...WHAT?
My Nexus 5 with Marshmallow, have the same problem, the wifi does not reconnect when I'm back in the router range.
I have Nova Launcher Prime installed, can this be the cause?

Marshmallow has a new DHCP client. Maybe it's been fixed by that. You can switch between that client and Lollipop's client from Settings -> Developer options
Got the same problem on marshmallow.
When I get home it does not automatically reconnect to my home Wifi, only when I turn the screen on, which was not the case on lollipop and before.
Got similar problems at my university, although a little more inconsistent.
Sometimes it does connect to Wifi even thogh the screen is off, but sometimes it drops the connection while the screen is off, only reconnecting when i turn it on.

I'm suspecting that routers are playing a role in the wifi issues.
I have a router running DD-WRT and changed the following wireless settings:-
Wireless Network Mode = Mixed and Wireless Channel Width = Full (20MHz)
The phone's wifi connection is more stable. It reconnects to my home network when back in range without having to wake it up. It also immediately reconnects to my network on the odd occasions when the wifi connection drops.

My Nexus 5,when it was with Lollipop, never missed a wifi connection.
Now with Marshmallow,it's a pain...
Connection drops, then riconnects, then drops when I lock the phone, then reconnect when I unlock it...

One thing to mention is I didn't upgrade from Lollipop to Marshmallow ... I did a clean install of Marshmallow.
The other thing is have you tried the Lollipop DHCP client that's available in the Settings -> Developer options ?
I did a clean installation too.
Flashed the factory image,from zero.
Yes I've tried the old DHCP,but it does not solve the problem...

I know with my router if I have the wireless channel width set to Full (20MHz) then my phone's wireless is stable and it auto reconnects.
If I set the wireless channel width to Wide HT40 (20 + 20 MHz) then the phone's wireless has problems.

My Galaxy note 10.1 is having problems with wifi. Connecting is not a problem, but at random intervals no communication between my router and the device occurs. At such times it claims it is still connected but only the green upload arrow is on, and none of the programs, like email en the browser, work. Toggling wifi to off and then on again fixes the situation, until it happens again at a seemingly random time later. I don't have problems with any of the other devices (windows laptops, ipad etc) that connect to this router.
Anyone an idea what this is and how to fix it? Or do I just have a faulty product and should return it?
I am running the original Samsung OS.
Does this happen on EVERY router You connect with ?
As it was with SGS II there are several routers/router types that "speak different connection languages" and/or have to be readjusted in their settings ........
Try first on a different router to check wether it is really the 10.1 causing the problem ....................

Thanks for the reply! Yes it disconnects on both the router at home and at work. So it is the 10.1 causing the problem. Also it looks like the problem is getting worse. It disconnects much more frequently, to the point that it has become unusable. Am I the only one with this problem? If so I should return it.
Thanks for your help.

Turned out to be a hardware problem. Returned the device and got it replaced. Works perfectly now.
I've had my Note since 8/24. No Wi-fi problems until today. I kept loosing the connection. The Note told me about it. It automatically switched to a different access point.
I turned my router off then on. It's been at least 6 hours without a problem.
Is there any way to be certain what the source of a connection problem is?
I have just discovered my wifi turns on and off every ten seconds when I connect to a Bluetooth headset or keyboard. Maddening.

Interesting. I use a BT speaker while watching Netflix. Periodically it loses the wifi connection, and I have been blaming it on my ISP and throttling. Maybe the issue is actually something different. Need to test it tonight.

Hi guys,
Has anyone ever had trouble tethering their iPad Air to the Nexus 5? I use my iPad Air for work, and would like to tether it to my Nexus 5. My current carrier plan has no tethering restrictions.
I managed to pair the two devices together, but could not actually establish a bluetooth connection (no error shown on either device when a connection attempt is initiated).
I can get these to pair up via bluetooth with other devices, just not with each other
When I ran a 3rd part bluetooth debugging app (bluetooth viewer lite) and sent a random message:
- the iPad recognised a bluetooth connection was established
- on the nexus 5, The app indicated that a message was sent
- on the nexus 5, the bluetooth icon was still greyed, indicating no connection had been established.
I tried the usual stuff, un-pair, reset, re-pair, turning off wi-fi, etc. With no luck
Any ideas, guys? Thanks for your help!

I concur. My wife and I both fire up the wifi tether on our n5's for a couple ipad and ipod touches. Works great every time.
DOH! Just figured it out ... I didn't enable 'Bluetooth Tethering' on my Nexus 5, it may be off by default.
For anyone who's wondering how to switch it on:

My understanding is that I can tether via Bluetooth Low Energy, so there will be less battery drain on both devices. Do you think that sharing over Wi-Fi could be more battery efficient or negligible in comparison?
Cheers, guys!

Great to know, thanks for sharing
I just got my 64gb G6 Edge and am experiencing major WiFi issues with the device. My devices wireless will disconnect randomly from a strong signal and I have personally observed it disabling and re-enabling the wireless by itself.
Also once disconnected it no longer sees ANY wireless networks no matter where I go even though it shows the "scanning" circle spinning and I know that there are strong known wireless networks by me. If I manually toggle the WiFi off and then on again, all wireless networks around me are detected again and if any of my known networks are present it will automatically connect. However after a period of time this connection will disconnect and I have to do the process over again.
I have already made sure that 1.) Smart Switch is turned off. 2.) Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep is set to Always. 3.) Always allow scanning is enabled.
I have also tried disabling the WiFi Power Save mode [*#0011# and click on more>>WiFi>>"WIFI Power save mode"] this too resulted in the same behavior.
I've only had this phone for a day and a half, not rooted, already cleared cache partition from stock recovery etc. I haven't tried a factory reset yet (not sure how much good it would do), but at this point is there anything else I should try or is the consensus I need to get my phone swapped out?
**Update** So upon extensive further testing it seems that my wireless issues are caused by issues connecting to the 5GHz band on wireless access points that use bandsteering in that both 2.4GHz and 5GHz use the same SSIDs. This is a MAJOR problem for me as I encountered this at my place of work and rely on wireless heavily not to mention my phone heavily for wireless testing. There are no "Advanced" wireless settings for selecting which band to use either.
I really need some suggestions in order to try and get this problem solved or I may have to switch to a crappier phone just to have functional wireless.
I had something like that happen too, but I only noticed it at home. My home network has both 2.4 and 5GHz using same SSID. I set my phone to use 2.4GHz rather than the deault setting "AUTO", now it seems to work. Shouldn't have to do that though, but maybe my home network isn't setup correctly. This is not device specific though, it happened on my old M8 and now on s6 edge. So it must be on my end.

I can only imagine he meant router settings because the S6 doesn't show that ability. Sounds like you have to get different SSIDs for your 2.4 and 5 bands.

Sorry guys, I was wrong. I upgraded from M8 to M9 last week. I had to change bands on M9, like on the M8. Didn't like the M9 so swapped out for s6 edge. I did not have to do this on s6 edge!
I had a brain fart..sorry for confusion, it was the M9.
This is what I have found out in my thorough testing on this. The S6 / S6 Edge have issues connecting to AC Wireless networks. Upon connecting the devices wireless connection to and AC Wireless access point or router it will become unstable and disconnect randomly and in my firsthand experience will not re-establish wireless connections at all until WiFi has been manually toggled off and then back on at which point the process I described above will begin again if connecting to any AC Wireless device.
A workaround for the moment for home personal routers is to separate the SSID's if they aren't already for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz and to use the 2.4GHz channel. This won't help however for all the places you cannot change that have AC wireless AP's installed etc. I am continuing to test this device for a while before I return it as I require functional wireless in my day to day job.
This is a huge issue, I contacted Samsung support yesterday about this (You should too) as I have confirmed that this is happening cross platform and carrier, S6 & S6 Edge, Verizon & Sprint that I am aware of so I'm guessing it all of them.
Has anybody else noticed any issues with connectivity on 5ghz wifi networks after the 6.0 update? I never had issues before updating, but now it connects but says there is no internet connection. I tried factory resetting it and it didn't fix the problem.
I was just going to disable 5ghz networks in the settings, but it looks like LG (or AT&T) removed the option to do so (it's an option on my Nexus 5, which is not having any issues with 5ghz and marshmallow).
Yes they removed the option.

Wifi was spotty before the Android 8 update but now it's almost unusable. Every now and again it will just stop showing wifi connections, toggling wifi on and off might show a connection or 2 but it will either disappear or just say "Disabled" when trying to connect to it. Reboot solves it for a little while.
Usually use 2.4Ghz wifi with a variety of router brands.

Happens here on Android 8 as well, quite annoying to be honest. Sometimes drops the connection for no reason, and then when I click on WiFi settings, it doesn't show any connections till I turn WiFi on and off and even then it'll only show 1 SSID, turning it off for a while longer and then turning it back on brings back the rest of them and then it'll connect, but it's stupid how I have to keep doing this every few hours.
I set my 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to different names and join only the 5 GHz, and I don't get drops. On Oreo rooted.
i have xperia xz premium with Oreo 8.0 I encounter the same problems when I'm connected to my wifi, suddenly the data connection is blocked, and when this happens I have to turn off and on the wifi symbol to restore the connection. I do not understand why this happens. My phone is updated to the 47.1.A.5.51 system with November google patches. My modem is Billion Bipac 7800N
So it seems to be a common issue, anyone know if Sony is aware of it?
Where can we complain? It's their damn top of the range phone and it's most basic function isn't working right.

Do a Google search for WiFi and Oreo and you will see that this is affecting multiple cell phones.
Do they all have the 835 chip in them???
I think it is an Oreo issue.
I have no such problems and I have Oreo and the 835.
Try disabling IPv6 on your router.
This is still OS/firmware issue but this temporally fix the issue

I found the solution:
My network works with two devices:
1 ZTE Router (2.4GHz)
1 D-LINK Repeater (2.4GHz)
In the router my XZ Premium works nicely, in the repeater happen exactly what you said, Connect apperars "no internet" after 1 second and wifi on Smartphone is automatically disabled or wifi stay enabled, but says "disabled" on network.
So.. I checked the wlan settings of the two devices in my network exhaustively item by item and I changed the devices settings about 20 times, I and I found that none of the settings matters (wpa or wep, 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz, Bandwidth 20Mhz or 40Mhz, type of network b / g / n, nor channel 1 to 13) just ignore this.
What REALLY MATTERS is a option in the advanced wlan settings, called "Fragment Threshold" this value was at 500, I changed it to the maximum (2346) and my XZ Premium started the connection instantly. Explaining: increasing this value defined that the packet can be up to 2346 bytes before being fragmented, so we deactivate packet fragmentation, reducing overhead and ensuring the best transmission rate possible, so this option determines the size of the frame.
Put simply: Go to advanced Wlan settings, locate "Fragment Threshold" and change to the highest possible value. That worked for me =)
worked for me
1- turn off wifi in being wifi settings ie where you view your wifi networks
2- select "scanning settings". it will show once you have turned your wifi off
3- turn off wifi and bluetooth scanning
4- go back turn wifi back on and enjoy
