Honestly why not buy from Motorola directly via Moto maker? If you don't like just ship it back for free and no questions asked.

As a Verizon users who already pre-ordered from Moto, this is a little concerning:
"* Phone will not work with Sprint, Verizon, Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile or any other CDMA carriers. Please contact your carrier prior to purchasing to confirm your carrier will support voice and data on this unlocked GSM device." - from the BB site linked in OP.
I know it supposedly has the bands to work on VZ, what do you guys think?
Edit: This DL article shows that it does have CDMA Bands for Verizon: http://www.droid-life.com/2015/07/28/moto-x-pure-edition-bands-verizon/ I'm still nervous though.
If it has expandable memory, why would you overpay for bigger internal storage? Just curious.

More total storage and more room for apps. I will leave the option off in M that combines storage, so can use the sd as media only. I have a 200gb card and has my entire music collection and also some movies, game roms, comics, books and Gear VR media. I like my stuff in one local place. Convenient and zero reliance on cloud or OTG storage.

I live in Windsor, Ontario. I want to cross the border and go to a best buy to purchase the moto pure. Do they sell it outright in stores over in the USA or online only? Here I can't purchase phones outright at best buy, it has to be on a new contract to get phones from them.

I would suggest calling the store that you plan on going to and ask them. I wouldn't trust the online store availability, I've had the website say "unavailable" when a product was actually available at the store.

Right now they are "shipping" only, and with pre-order. Best bet is wait till they show available and give the actual store a call. I have never bought one outright from a store, always did online.

The Moto X Pure Edition is categorized at Best buy as "Unlocked" which means that you should be able to purchase it without any contract/service plan. You should be able to walk out of the store with nothing more that the cell phone.
FYI the 16gb black model probably has the best chance of being in stock. For me, it is saying "Add to Cart" rather than "Pre-Order" like the other models.

I am expecting my S3 to arrive from Amazon today. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to using the sim card they send with it opposed to getting one from the Verizon store?
I guess what I am asking is if there are any strings attached or anything like that if I use the sim card amazon provides?
Thanks!

This has nothing to do with the sim but just be aware if the phone was discounted and you dont complete the 2yr agrement with verizon, amazon will charge you up to $250 for early cancellation. They try and get their money back they ate giving the discount. My friend got hit with that crap which is sort of dumb but does make sense.

I got my GS3 through amazon with their sims card and never had a bit of trouble with it.
I am solving this as we speak, so I will update, but went to BB, bought the N5 (I have my reasons why I bought there, not from Play store)
The box states, software lock is in place to prevent the use with non-Sprint sim cards. Also Sprint brochure in box, and no pin-tray key in the box. In other words, the phone is packaged for Sprint specifically.
I bought it, I will call up Sprint and T-Mobile (which is who I want to use) and see what's up.
Anyone else has info?

I really hope that being simlocked to Sprint doesn't affect Android updates down the line. It shouldn't, because it's technically not a "Sprint variant" of the phone, but you never know.

Wait till you get the phone. For all you know, it may be SIM unlocked like the version from the play store. For other phones like the S4, Sprint does have the 90 day requirement before unlocking it for use with International SIMs.
On the Nexus 5, hopefully, they haven't locked down the US bands (like they do with the S4 and other phones). The play store version is not locked.
The http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701 thread shows you how to flash the stock images - but again, no guarantees that it will do the trick till you actually try it out.
I didn't want to risk this, so I just bought from the play store. I asked the play store person if the phone was guaranteed to get timely updates direct from google, and he gave a "Phones purchased from the play store will get timely updates from google" response. I'm guessing it was a canned response, but I do hope that Sprint doesn't cripple the version sold by Sprint/Bestbuy etc.
That's pretty crappy. I'd return it.
No, Flashing the stock image will not remove the SIM lock. The SIM lock is stored in a different place.

Update
Sprint Tech Support confirmed the phone is locked. The problem is that they COULD unlock it, but the phone needs to be activated first. To activate the phone, I have to add it to a plan (a 2 year contract). Without that, they cannot do anything with a "cold" phone. Thus far I got nowhere .. the plan is definitely to return it if they do not budge.
I purchased mine from the Google play store as well.
Why would sprint sell it at a subsidized price of $150 or $50 for new customers without locking it to their network during your 2 year contract.
Also, I bet sprint will only unlock it for international use during the 2 year contract. Just like the iPhone and s4.

Well sure, I understand that with the subsidized phones, but I paid it up front - I paid the full $450 for a Nexus. I wanted an unlocked phone ... it's a bum deal.
I am trying to find out whether a friend of mine could activate it on his account, I get it unlocked, and then we re-activate his iPhone back ... not sure Sprint will go for it.
Ugh .. I just want a Nexus 5 you know? ... and this seemed like a fine way of getting it (My old Captivate died finally for good on Tuesday. and I do not really have $350 just siting around, so the $100 markup was my financing "cost" to get 18 month of payments (I have no interest financing through best buy; my other card has high interest .. it was not a bad financing plan). Ugh .. if only Sprint let me unlock it.
Returned it. will get the tmo version next week. i really wish the wait on play store was shorter. my phone is dead ... waiting is too painful.

I don't think Sprint has any clue what they are talking about. I had a 200 dollar BB giftcard so I went in tonight and purchased a "Sprint" N5 and I don't even have Sprint service Ran by the AT&T store and picked up a micro sim, popped it in and everything is working perfectly. The device is definitely not locked to Sprint. Full LTE data with AT&T without having to configure anything.

So you just stick an AT&T SIM card in there and it'll automatically switch to it? Was your phone already activated on the Sprint network? I'm curious since Sprint would tie in with the ESN activation for CDMA. If it's just as simple as putting in an AT&T or Tmobile SIM, then I'm sure getting it!

I bought a Nexus 5 from Best Buy and I'm an AT&T customer. Yes, the phone will automatically connect to AT&T's network. It took a few minutes to convince the BB employee that the phone would work on AT&T. They also insisted it was store policy that they activate every phone they sell, so I had to pay the $30 activation fee.

I can't remember specifics but I had to change the settings here back to LTE a couple of times. For some reason it wouldn't stick after the first reboot. I can't retest it because my straight talk Sim is not active right now. I can assure you it works relatively easily though.

because all N5's sold in North America are the same model, with the same frequencies (D820), the only thing that may have to be changed is the APN.
this is not like other Sprint specific devices like the G2 (LS980) vs the AT&T G2 (D800)
AT&T - D800
GSM 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS 850/1900/2100
LTE 1900(2)/1700(4)/850(5)/700(17)
Sprint - LS980
GSM 850/1900
CDMA 800/850/1900
UMTS 850/1900
LTE 1900(25)/800(26)/2500(41)

That would have been awesome, I don't understand why everybody charges $100 more unless Google really is taking a hit on each one they sell.
Glad you got them to price match, they wouldn't budge for me. Brought them a few receipts where other people did it, brought them the price printed. They just kept telling me it's not the same phone, got to the point where I was just tired of wasting my time with them and didn't want to wait on the Play Store so I just got it at full price.

I don't think Google is necessarily taking a hit but I do think they are selling them just slightly above cost. You have to remember that Google isnt a electronic sales company like Apple, they make all of their profits from there data mining and advertising business. Android is just another medium to collect data and deliver ads. So they could give these away for free and still benefit. However companies like best buy and sprint make their money off of retail sales and cell phone plans. So they are trying to maximize profits that way.
Anyways bummer that they didn't match for you. I guess I just got luck. I walked in not feeling to confident with my play store ad. They were cool but hesitant. After the guy asked his manager he said that they normally wouldn't match the play store but were will to make an exception.
I am in the same boat but for T Mobile. Anyone know if this phone will work for T Mobile as well? I would believe so but I want to make especially if BB is going to charge me an activation fee.

Lol... LG stopped production on their flagship device? No. A lot of cell companies are out of the G2 bc of holiday sales. I had to track down a white one for Verizon and it took awhile. Best bet is to either order it online from AT&T or Amazon. Store restocks can take a while.
He said its for work. So has to be a corporate store. I have a Verizon G2 for work and only a corporate store can upgrade a line on a corporate account.
Perhaps call and order over the phone. They should be able to activate the sim and ship you a new phone next day.

He said its for work. So has to be a corporate store. I have a Verizon G2 for work and only a corporate store can upgrade a line on a corporate account.
Perhaps call and order over the phone. They should be able to activate the sim and ship you a new phone next day.

Yeah the phone in black is readily available on Verizon's site. Have it shipped to the store and activated if they won't do it over the phone.
My last work upgrade on the corporate account went through just fine over the phone. So idk if I'm just lucky or what.

i know he needs it for work, but perhaps this might work.
Get to the verizon website by going through ebates, and you can get $160 in rebates on a new activation.
Ebates is a referal site that has no hooks or gimmicks. THey just want you to shop online by clicking on their site first. THe money is sent to you via check or paypal. And it works.
Use this link
http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=ZQQOxOWLyiswubRX0c1paA==
Create your account
Search for verizon wireless, and it will open a new window to it. THen shop around and get $160 back.
Simple. No gimmicks, no tricks.
It's finally in stock on AT&T's website. I placed an order and should arrive sometime next week.
I still find it weird that it was sold out online and in all AT&T stores. I tried placing an order over the phone too and got the same out of stock. The AT&T rep even tried calling local stores in my area and was also told out of stock.
Well now, can't understand why folks want to violate XDA rules.
More specifically.... the "Profanity" rule. Any explanation?
Please feel free to PM me, and explain why one needs to confuse XDA with a social network site, and argue "freedom of speech" (it don't exist here, as XDA is a Developers site)
Next profanity, and it won't be a pretty outcome.
Keep it clean please.

In in NorCal and I've yet to see anyone with the G2...really surprised the local AT&T stores were sold out. Maybe there was a promotion going on for the holiday season. Anyways, hope you enjoy the G2 as much as I do. Superb battery life! Got over 5 hours of screen time use lately..LOVING it!

I'm in the market for a G2 now, and it seems the same thing is happening. AT&T's site says it's sold out. I called my local store (York, PA) and they say it's not marked as end of life, but they told me no other local stores have them in stock either. Could it now be because of the Flex?
Could be just catching people's attention maybe? Just picked one up, and let's just say my HTC One is getting a bit jealous, lol. I never even heard of this phone until a couple of weeks ago.
I ordered the white one on the att site on the 30th, during the one day it's been in stock. Now it's back ordered. Hope it doesn't take forever.

I hope it gets there for you quickly. I want the white as well, but both colors are out no matter what store I call. Something is definitely up.

Amazon has them in Stock. Matter of fact I just refused a few from postal carrier as I went with Verizon. Get the prime trial and you have it in a day for 4 bucks shipping.

Amazon wants 200 dollars more than AT&T though. Thanks for the thought though.
Need to get my hands on the Moto X Play. Anyone able to get one from sasktel in canada? They seem to be the cheapest out there with the option to buy the device outright from a store.
Please let me know asap
Thanks guys and gals!
You might want to hold on there. From what I've read, all the Canadian devices are network locked...
Telus says theirs are carrier locked

from what I gather, your best bet for acquiring a USA GSM compatible and unlocked Moto X Play is to go with one from Brazil with model number XT1536. The question now is how to get one from that country and not pay too much extra fees for it. On a side note, I noticed all the Canadian carriers seem to carry the 16GB model only. i know memory is expandable but i'd prefer more onboard storage due to faster read/write access plus better memory chips used vs. your typical microsd card.
They're carrier locked but from what a Bell representative told me, you can pay them 50 (unlocking fee) and then you can unlock the phone yourself / other people to get it to work outside the carrier.

Hey thanks for the heads up man. i thought the brazilian one was also compatible but wanted to see if canada was easier. If it unlocked from brazil it may be a better buy.
Real problem is that conversion really sucks... $300 usd for the one from canada and $400 usd for the one from brazil

If you want- I can get you the one from Canada- I noticed you were in NYC which isn't too far from where I am- it is $449+tax CAD + $50 unlocking fee + whatever shipping would be to you.
Let me know! I had to go through so much trouble to get one even though I'm already in Canada already ahha- but no regrets at all! Awesome phone.

I'm going to go through the steps tomorrow and see how it goes. If i can get one for. Myself then we should be good to go after that. I will let you guys know. I also. Made another thread about me getting for other people as well. Also I'm not going to buy the unlock code from. Sasktel at first. Going to see if one of those cheap unlock site work first.

500 dollars??? better off getting the moto style
Does the Sasktel one come with the Turbo Charger? I saw an article on MobileSyrup that mentioned Koodo is one of two carriers that includes the turbo charger, but didn't see anything more.
Here in Alberta there's no sales tax, so getting it from Koodo may not be a bad idea (if they'll sell outright). I'm considering buying one, but only if I can get it outright.

Hey it looks like if you go into a koodo store you should be able to buy it sim free from them. Do they have stores in alberta? you willing to go and check it out?
Yes they do. If you can give me until tomorrow, I'll go have a look (I'm probably going to grab one if they have it in stock.
I actually have a Koodo account, so I shouldn't have a problem buying it without the 2-yr term.

Awesome dude let us know the total cost with tax after you get it. i am very interested.
Moto x play is smaller the the LG G4 in all ways except thickness....who cares with that huge battery!
BTW it is confirmed why we dont have it in the USA.... http://www.droid-life.com/2015/08/25/droid-maxx-2-verizon/
I got my Moto X Play from Koodo today. While I did upgrade from my tab, I also confirmed it's $430.50 outright here in Alberta ($410 + 5% GST).

Deleted.
Motorola are extremely cheap to unlock... The last few I did were around 5 bucks
Has anyone figured out how to get the 2nd SIM slot to work on the Canadian variant?
