[Q] Bought S3 from Amazon. Do I have to use their sim card? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I am expecting my S3 to arrive from Amazon today. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to using the sim card they send with it opposed to getting one from the Verizon store?
I guess what I am asking is if there are any strings attached or anything like that if I use the sim card amazon provides?
Thanks!

It is a standard Verizon sim. Contract is still Verizon. Amazon just the retailer. Same as if you went to Best Buy, Radio Shack or the Verizon store.

Ok, thank you! Wasn't sure if it would have any sort of extra strings attached or anything!

This has nothing to do with the sim but just be aware if the phone was discounted and you dont complete the 2yr agrement with verizon, amazon will charge you up to $250 for early cancellation. They try and get their money back they ate giving the discount. My friend got hit with that crap which is sort of dumb but does make sense.

Thanks! Yep, knew about that, but I think it is a 6 month thing, not the full 2 years. I plan on keeping the phone anyway, so I shouldn't have to worry much about that unless something extraordinary happens.

Question about damaged phone, insurance and sim card . . . .?

I have a Skyrocket, love it! Love the forums here as well! I damaged my phone, got wet, tried to dry it out for a day, called and have a replacement coming from Asurion. My old phone turns on now but doesn't recognize sim card. When I ordered the new phone, I opted without the sim card because I figured it was fine. If I get the replacement phone and the sim card doesn't work in it, can I just go to the AT&T store to get a new one? Does it cost anything? Thanks for any help! I'm new to AT&T
I have gone to an att store. And was given a free sim card. About 4 months ago
Same here.... Was given a free one before I upgraded, then another when I got the rocket.
Thanks for that, I came from Sprint and never dealt with sim cards before. I don't know if the card is damaged or just the phone not reading it. They are charging me $199 for my insurance replacement and said it comes with battery and charger. I hope it's new and not refurbished.

That's what I figured, lol! Do you think I'm getting a new Skyrocket or a refurbished one? $199 seemed like a alot compared to what I was used to. I'm surprised it comes with the battery and charger
For $199 it should be new.... But AT&T are known to give refurbs out regardless. Cross your fingers and toes.
Alright, will do! With Sprint it was only $50 or $100 and always refurbished without the battery and charger.
Why the heck is asurion charging 199 I guess this is carrier insurance
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
Holy crap, $199 for insurance replacement is ridiculous! It'll probably be a re-furb too (and probably re-furbed from one of the bricks mentioned here on XDA...lol).
I don't have the brainpower to do the math right now, but if you add up the annual cost of insurance + $199 for replacement you'd be better off just adding line for an extra $9.99 a month and getting a refurb (right now AT&T isn't showing any refurbed SR's on their site but they had them recently for $19.99 I think--but they have the HTC Vivid for $.01 and the og s2 for $9.99).
Insurance is such a scam!
I have been charged for sim cards. 25$ each but that was not a Att store but a reseller. Do they have att stores anymore? I live in Atlanta Georgia btw.

Why not just get one online from T-Mobile since you're with them? I got the activation kit for $1.08 with free activation or go I'm store and ask for a micro Sim? I've heard they'll give it to you for free.

With T-Mobile, you have two options.
1) If you have postpaid service, you can buy a Micro-SIM kit (currently $1) online from their prepaid division, and when you get the phone, you can switch to the new SIM card yourself via t-mobile.com/sim. (You can ignore and discard the rest of the prepaid kit.) There is no way to change the SIM online if you have prepaid service, so for that, you need the second option below.
2) Go to a T-Mobile store. There, they can swap the SIM for you for free, for either prepaid or postpaid service.
I'm going to do #1 because $1 is worth it for the convenience and to save the time and gas needed to go to the store.

At the previous links, you need an active account with them. On their prepaid, they only list the regular SIM (that I could find), so this link might be helpful for people:

Weird. I walked into a Tmobile store two weeks ago to get the Isis SIM card for my GS3 and wasn't charged anything, and again last week to get a normal SIM after selling my GS3 and wasn't charged either time.
There are T mobile deals all the time. 2-3 times a month they are just free. I got 2 last month.

After poking around for a few minutes, I was unable to find an online mechanism for getting a micro SIM from T-Mobile (US), so I gave up and called 611. It couldn't have been easier: I just said that I was buying an unlocked phone and needed a micro SIM card for it; the agent asked for the line I wanted it for and how quickly I wanted it, and they're mailing me one for free. (They offer expedited shipping for a fee, but since they quoted "up to a week" for free delivery, I took that option.)
I understand from another poster in one of the other forums that their experience was different and the customer service agent told them that they'd have to bring the phone in, so YMMV.

eBay sellers still show pre-orders. Can't find a shop with stock since the phone hasn't been released.

S4 isn't for sale anywhere - but in Denmark you can make a pre-order in about 20 shops at the moment. First delivery end of April.
Right and stores in Germany and the UK are also taking pre-orders.

Does BestBuy have an advantage over AT&T? I am asking because I am trying to decide if I want to go through AT&T to buy mine or another brick & mortar store. I'm not going to buy online because I want to be able to physically see and hold what I will be buying in this case. I plan on buying it at full price, but that might change if I can get a deal on a plan if I subsidize it through AT&T.

They usually charge less. Also if you get their warranty, it's much better. Covers everything and you don't have to pay for a replacement or repair.
AND, the next time you purchase a phone, they will buy the old one back. Usually not as much as you'd get on eBay for it, but could help defray the costs of your next phone.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like a pretty good place to buy from but I am a little unsure if BestBuys is going to even be in business in 2 or three years when I go to get another phone. I guess its going to come down to how much less they can sell them for versus AT&T.

[Q] Google's N5 or T-Mo's N5?

Hey, is there ANY difference between the Nexus 5 on the Play Store and the Nexus 5 that T-Mo sells in their stores?
I ask because my gf and I are switching to T-Mobile later this month and she is going to get the Nexus. She wants to be sure that if she doesn't like T-Mo then she can take the phone to another carrier, like AT&T. We want to use the ETF money to get a reduced price on the Nexus, but if we can't bring the phone to another carrier then we might have to buy it from the Play Store instead.
Thanks!
they are exactly the same. play store sells 16 or 32gb, tmo sells 16gb.
Thanks a lot I'll probably end up asking the guy at T-Mo just in case, but I trust the word of XDA techies more.
BTW If they are exactly the same, that means the T-Mo version doesn't come with any bloatware?
T-Mobile reps usually know next to nothing. They are the exact same phone

Yeah, but Google subsidizes the price because they can afford it. My gf and I are going to see how much money we can get from Verizon's ETF, we might end up saving money thanks to T-Mo.
The only difference between the Nexus at the Google Play store and the T-Mobile store is the one at the T-Mobile store is sold at a substantial markup, while Google Play sells it basically at cost.

I wouldn't call $46 a substantial markup. For some, $46 is worth it for nothing down and a two year payment plan.

AFAIK, if you're going to switch to TMO using their new plans to reimburse ETFs, you have to turn in your old phone and buy a new phone from them directly. I don't think you can BYOD with a Play Store phone? So, assuming the N5s from TMO/Play are using the same bands, you should be able to take directly to AT&T with only a SIM switch. And IF you're ok with only 16GBs of storage. As a few others have said, TMO only sells the 16GB model. Seems stupid to me, but whatever.

If you have grandfathered Verizon unlimited data, selling it on Ebay through an "Assumption of Liability" is the way to go. I just made $350 on my wife and my lines instead of paying $250+ in ETF. It was really easy to do. There's a thread on rootzwiki on how to do it. Search on "Sell Verizon Contract and Keep your Number"

My gf has an old crappy Android that she definitely won't miss over the N5, We aren't worried about trading in a device, we aren't losing anything. And yes, she doesn't care about storage. 16GB will be more than enough for her.

Got my $200 AT&T trade in credit

Hello everybody. Want to share my experience for anybody that pre-ordered their v20 through AT&T and was planning on getting their $200 trade in credit. Just got back from AT&T store and process was pretty simple. I took in a old iphone they checked it out, asked for my v20 imei, then they gave me an instant $200 credit in my bill. They also said I could've used the credit instantly to buy accessories at the store, or wait to get some type of card that I could use later.

You don't have to go in store, but I believe its easier and quicker. You don't need an email to go get credit in store. Just tell them you pre-ordered and are there for the credit. I couldn't find a cheap prepaid phone to turn in. The cheapest I found was a AT&T iphone 4 on eBay for $50, that AT&T valued at $5 trade in credit.
