The phone doesn't cancel out noise. The external microphones in the sony headphones cancel out the noise. The headphones are only compatible with the sony Xperia because the Xperia supplies the battery and processing for the cancellation.
You can purchase any pair of headphones with an external battery for the same effect, like these from BOSE link

Hello.
I have Z for an year already and I'm still enjoying this phone much. One BIG disadvantage was very low volume with headphones.
I have one panasonic headphone, one from sony, and that one which came with it.
Recently my gf bought Z2 and I was testing it. Incredible device. But I'm not talking about that. I tested earbuds which came with Z2.
I found them ABSOLUTELY fantastic. incredibly high volume, best bass ever, best treble.
one little thing. if you want to make it work, you have to NOT plug it in phone completely. make sure you left some 0.2-0.5mm of jack outside of phone. it's not that comfortable, but headphones are worth of that (if you will not leave a bit of jack outside, you will hear only in one speaker)
MDR-NC31EM is name of it.
P.S. voice it has is REALLY good.

They work on Z like all others when I plug it completely, but you won't be able to use the mic or noise cancellation as the power source required for the noise-cancelling microphone is located in the earphone's connector. And volume of my old Xperia Z buds is fantastic and almost the same as with Z1 and Z2 buds (I'm a sony earbuds freak ). Better check your earbuds or phone connector.

It s depends on retail package of your region
for example phoneArena http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z3-Compact-Review_id3794 got the MDR-NC31E with XZ3c
some package won't have even normal headset!
:good:
I'm in UK and got the cheap MH750. Better nowt, I guess...
I notice that the Z3+ / Z4 did not come with any bundled headphones. What are the chances of the Z5 premium coming with headphones? If not can you use any Sony headphones to utilise the noise cancellation?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HX9AJ5M works with all the current ones with built in noise cancellation, so would imagine they would work with the Z5 too. The listing on all the Z5 versions on clove.co.uk don't have any headphones listed as being included in box, so I would suspect there isn't going to be.
Does the Z5 actually state it has noise cancellation for the earphones, I've only seen it mentioned for the mic

No headset with Z5 Premium
Hi all. I just purchased a Z5 Premium and there was no headset or quick charger including..... Really really poor choice for Sony not to include headset and the quick charger. I'm going to contact Sony today abd complain about it. It can't be right that I almost paid 1200$ for the phone and then no headset. They could at least include a headset with a phone that expensive.
Got my z5 dual with headphones, quick charger and sony flip case. I am from India...may be offer is available for certain regions..
For the regular Z5 there was nothing else than the normal charger itself... however there is a dedicated space in the box for headphones nothing was there in Poland... Official Sony distribution
Ehh, it is wrong way of selling premium devices...
mine came with headphones, it came from Taiwan though
Mh750- headphones.
UCH10- quick charger.
Along with Sony flip case-SCR42
Mh750 headphones with no quick charger
Just received these yesterday and they are excellent. Crystal clear sound and noise cancellation works well with Z5. Like most Sony earbuds, slightly lacking in bass response but I can get past that considering the music I listen to. Purchased from Clove UK.

Do they have any in-line controls?

No, they don't.
Can the headset be used for hands-free phone calls, or are the built-in microphones solely for noise cancelling purposes?

No call functionality at all. They sound fantastic listening to FLAC recordings. I have parked my JBL's and using these exclusively for music. I would think they would improve with break in as well.
You can talk in to the back of the headphones, the mic is dual purpose so works with calls as well as noise cancelling.
Another cool feature is if you have this headset plugged in when recording video the phone records in stereo. Keep them in your ears though to get better stereoscopic sound whilst recording.)
It's odd how Sony don't market these features.

Sony did market the feature for the older NC31EM. However, this comment is missing form the MC750 product page.
I wonder what the differences between the two really are, except price and design, obviously.
Upon further investigation, it looks like they can be used for calls:

Whats the difference between Sony MDR-NC750(70GBP) and Sony MDR-EX750(130GBP) ??
MDR-EX750 are rechargeable with in-line controls. MDR-NC750 have neither of these features.

Sony MDR-EX750 has Active Noise cancellation (doesn't require Z5), the Sony MDR-NC750 is basically a headphone with a microphone to take in background noise, but relies on the Z5 (or Z-series) phone to provide the noise cancellation -- meaning NC750's noise cancellation doesn't work on anything else but Sony products.
Just got a pair in today (via ebay seller - he never used them. The box was still sealed!) I already had the NC31EM's which I also enjoy and kinda bid on these assuming I wouldn't win them. Oops They are a little more comfortable and the cable is Y-split vs the right side requiring wrapping around the back of the head. I'll be breaking them in over the weekend and seeing how they sound and do with noise cancelation. I already found the NC31's did a fair job.
So, can anyone can confirm calls can be made though this ? That was the main problem for me in the NC31EM, I know that workes (But not always, don't ask me why) but the correspond wasn't prone to understand me correctly :/
Thanks !
Hey,
Just came here to say that the mic is functionnal for the NC750 and worked well during some calls. No control on the remote but I don't mind
Hi i can confirm that it works well and main button on remote works as to answer or finnish the call

Hi, i know this is a very old post, however I'm curious if f what's the difference from NC31 and 750 in terms of audio quality, any significant difference? thanks
The difference is that NC750 are high resolution and the 31 are not (aside of some more audio improvements). And while it doesnt seem like much, i have both of them and the difference in audio quality is so high it cannot be described in words.
However, in order to fully utilize their potential i would recommend downloading a different music app other than the built in walkman because honestly the walkman is kind of crappy.

Hi, what about the sound quality of ex750 and nc750?
What do people use/recommend?
Also (I'm new to these) is it the ones that say active noise cancelling that work with our phones built in options?
Sent from my Xperia z5 using Tapatalk
No need for active noise cancelling with this phone. I use the Sony MDR-NC750 ear buds. The noise cancellation on the Z5 turns on automatically when plugged in and they work nice on the plane.

Just bought a set of Sony MDR-ZX770BN Bluetooth, noise cancelling over hear headphones. I'm in love. Once they're set to quality mode, I can't tell the difference between wired and Bluetooth. The noise cancelling is pretty good (haven't had a chance to test on a plane yet though). Definitely recommend checking them out at least.

I'd like to know too if they give a good bass output
Moreover, does the Sony noise cancellation from sound enhancements work on unlocked bootloaders too?

The sound quality is nice, crisp. Bass is there but if that is your preference, I wouldn't recommend these. I only use ear buds when on a plane or train. I use some MDR-Z7 when grounded, an entirely different class as they are over the ear and no noise reduction but entire range is represented well.

supposedly not but take a look at the following thread
(hint: don't spread it around too much - so that it'll work in the future, too - otherwise we'll have to miss out on the noise cancelling and other nice features in the future :silly

@augie7107:
those are some impressive headphones (MDR-Z7) !
I got the MDR-1a which are already pretty good, can't imagine how the Z7 would be
