OK so I've been using the Shield Tablet for about 6 months now, and the one thing that drives me crazy with it is the occasional freezes for up to 30 seconds or more sometimes! It happened on my pre-recall Tablet, it happens on my post-recall Tablet. It happened %100 stock, it happened rooted with stock rom, it happens rooted with stock rom and Bit-O kernel.
I know WHAT causes the freezes, I just don't understand WHY... The cause is that every single time my tablets ram usage get to the point where I only have around 300mb of free ram let, it starts freezing. When it gets down to around only 250mb free, it freezes like CRAZY and for long periods.
Does anyone know why this is or what can be done about it?
Are you on the latest 3.1 OTA? I've never experienced any lag on this version, but have had occasional lags on older firmware. I'm running stock 3.1, not even a modified kernel.

Yup I'm on stock rooted 3.1 with Bit-O kernel. But it has done it on all OS versions, stock and non stock kernel, and even on both tablets (pre and post recall). I've got a ram usage overlay on screen at all times to monitor ram usage, and every single time the free ram hits 300mb or lower it freezes like crazy.

First off thanks for getting GB rooted in like a day Great job all But after using the gb rom all day i noticed something strange. The phones avalable memory seems far less the fryo right now phone with 0 apps running is sitting at 269/329 where before it was sitting at the 160-190 range Its not to big of a issue it just now kills apps if i load say a game where as before i could leave stuff running in the background.. when i boot the phone it has tons of free memory just it seems after running a few apps and then closeing them and or letting the phone just even sit there it looks like if its just eating ram for no reason. Almost like a memory leak in the software
I notice a high amount of memory being used also when I just rebooted the phone...
Currently 225
I dont pay attention to apps reporting less or more of something. If my phone is running great and benchmarks as it should (All in all I use benchmarks to determine if my phone is running correctly first. epeen second). If your performance is fine I wouldn't worry about it.
naa stuff runs smooth even with higher amounts of ram used its just crappy when i have to relaunch apps that i dindt have to before lol its ok...
first thing, is this should be in the general section of the forum.
second thing is you guys have to remember that theses GB roms are from a leaked build and have been patched up to get it working, so there are still going to be force closes and glitches until we get an official release
Moved, can you post in general please?. This is android Development not Q&A.
My g tab is an amazing device as all you can attest to. However ive been running cm7 and now cm7.1 RC for a month now. I get random freezes constantly. Itll boot up and then once i get to using the tavle whether scrolling through a video or the app drawer itll freeze up.And can't do anything unless I do a hard reset ive searched endlessly for answers but got nothing ...please help..
All I can tell you is this. Cm7 has an extremely high volume of reports of problems. I'm amazed its still so popular.
I'm running CM7.0.3 stable for Netflix sake. Time to time I got freezes in Dolphin HD 5.6.
Sometimes I just wait and Dolphin would FC or tablet would go into reboot when I tried to put it in hibernation.
Well, as far as I know and my research on this and another problems - it's a nature of Android OS (not mature OS and buggy software for it).
Though I never got freezes from Netflix.
PS: might be overclock CPU to 1.4GHz is too much for your tablet. Try lower it to standard 1Ghz.

nope. I'm running calk clem and have not had a single freeze. Calk and clem really struck gold with this one.
I run 7.0.3 and it has been the most stable Gingerbread ROM I have tried. No problems at all and much better battery life - Love it!

Pretty sure the device is just getting old but I've been running out of RAM way too constantly causing many processes (including system processes) to be killed and in a constant restarting state. The only way to fix this is to restart my phone.
I'm on the latest CM10.1 Nightly, using the 7.3 marmite kernel (which I believe has the BIGMEM patch to add a bit more RAM). I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing thing or if it's a ROM problem. And yes, I tend to fully close apps fully before exiting it so it's not hanging around in memory.
Anyone?
Yes absolutely I am in the same boat. I am running the latest M build of CM10.1 and this is driving me nuts. I think this is a ROM problem I ran stock 4.1.2 for a long time and I could go days without a reboot with a big mem kernel.
Maybe apps are using more and more memory as well now? I just don't remember CM being like this it has only been recently that something has gone horribly wrong.

My mom uses Nexus S running stock 4.1.2 and she also faces the running out of RAM. The phone is damn slow and most of the time is left with only 20MB of free RAM. I was thinking of installing CM 10.1 to see if it helps.
I have the exact same problem with 4.2.X ROMs. My phone runs out of memory and becomes sluggish. If I reboot it would be fine for a day or two and then slow again. This is why I am still in cm 10 stable.

Do any of have the "hold back button to kill app" activated. This is truly the best and easiest way to kill the app from using the memory.
Also do u guys have ur apps on ur SD card or on the phone memory. Having the apps on the SD card allows for a better responsive phone.
Try a different ROM that has less on it. Especially"Google now" its a memory hog! Some ROMs like Slimbean have to option to not install it when installing the ROM & Gapps.
Install the ROM without extras. If it works fine before ur added apps then it could be an app that is also killing ur memory.
Also if u read ur ROMs thread, people will recommend a certain kernel that works well with it. A newer kernel can & will improve the phone's performance by far... But tread carefully since it can also cause more issues if used improperly.
Lastly this phone is like any other computer, it needs maintenance so make it a simple habit of rebooting it every night just as u go to bed so it can reset and charge the battery properly without anything extra running in the background.
Good luck

Yes, I also have the same problem. Right now I'm running CM 10.0 stable.
The ROM is quite stable and the battery life is good. But every 3 - 4 days I have to reboot my phone because it becomes very slow.
I think JB is not meant for our device. I'm gonna try Slim Bean next and see how it performs. If it's still slow, I'm going back to Gingerbread.

I'm running Slim-Bean 4.2.2 on my Nexus S and it's just as bad as CM 10.1. JB was just not meant for a device that is now 2.5 years old.
GB is really where I have seen optimal performance from my device, but CM 9 works pretty well too.
I did have problems. After downloading Greenify my phone stopped acting so slow as well as having about double the battery life.

Greenify, though seems to work, is one of the apps that gets killed when running out of ram. The apps I'm using to free RAM (Tasker, Greenify, etc) all want to get killed when running out of RAM. :\
Guys just go back to CM10 then you'll have more free ram 4.1.2 is the best os version for our phones!

Honestly guys try the greenify app it really is magic. Even if greenify gets killed the apps that it has hibernated won't come out of it unless you launch an app. And greenify will start again automatically it won't remain killed.

Hi,
I played with many Nexus S. I had one when they were new and my memory is that it was a good phone. Since then, I've played with 3-4 of them and every time, they were so slow, having lags of almost a minute on many touch of button. I've used Quadrant benchmark and everytime, I see that everything is normal except I/O. I've read many thread about that and they suggest that it has something to do with kernel. (most of the phone I used were using CyanogenMod, an OS I used since the beginning with almost all my phones (I have had a lot of them and always play with alternatives OS)).
My current phone died and I took back an old Nexus S and it is so frustrating to experience all those lags. I returned it back to Stock (official 4.1.2 image from google). I only flashed a recovery and rooted the phone after. What was my surprise to experience major lags and run the benchmark and see that I/O performance are still so low.
How are you living with your phone ? Is it fixable ?
Thanks to read me.
Looking forward to read from you guys

Hi There
If you are a die heart fan of Nexus S you must know that in Nexus S battery sucks.
So I can suggest you to run your device on Stock GB or ICS as i runs quite fast on them and gives a descent battery backup.

If you are a fan of Nexus S you must know that Battery in Nexus S sucks. So i must prefer to Get back to Stock GB or ICS on Nexus S . It runs a bit fast on them and battery life is also maximized.
Otherwise root your device and install any custom rom Of GB r ICS with a bit good tweaks so that you dont feel outdated.
And then find a good kernel for Nexus S which maximizes its Battery Life.
Goood Luck..!
Hi, did u test RR3 in Maximus? I have big stutter, i cant force to colse apk, i dont see even Task Manager in menu, but in asopa i want to instal HTC Task manager. In cm 12.1 RR3 works better, but firt of all i want to have sense, and cm 12.1 crash when i play and somebody calls, or text me. When i mean crash i mean, he stops the game, frezze system, cut the incoming call and realod to home menu. A add kernel elementalx OC 1,7Ghz + GPU 450 but null resoult.

Yes, we know something. You're trying to play one of the most demanding games (in terms of resources) on a 4 years old device, on an old ROM and you expect to have it work flawless. Guess what...not gonna happen. It's like trying to play Crysis 3 or FarCry 3 on a Pentium 4 with a 512 MB graphic card.

Hmm, this is weird. When I install Cm 11 OPO stock edition/12.1 Real Racing works hmm fine, but i dont like cm, and cm have other issue. On maximus this game is baerly playable, but sense 5 is beautiful. Stock 4.1.1 works better then Maximus, but worse then CM. I must say this phone is very unstable, I flash couple roms couple times and one times evrything works fine, but when i flash again to stock and then again maximus, i lost that stable when i flash before.
I wipe everything, system, cashe, data, internal, boot. davlk. I use CWM, TWRP and i must say this my phone dosent like me.

Thats because Sense will put a high load on the phone already so starting a game which demand even more CPU, memory and graphic resources wont help it perform better. So in terms of performance, a CM or AOSP based ROM will theoretically be better.
On the other hand, Sense based ROMs are using proprietary HTC drivers that are optimized for our device, while CM/AOSP uses manufacturer generic drivers.
Bottom line is that you have to choose. It's depending on what you want but playing recent and graphic intensive games it's not one of this phone's strongest points. Probably the lag is mostly caused by the less memory we have as our device, despite having 1 GB RAM, was good at this point 3 years ago. Nowadays devices with 1 GB RAM are barely running Lollipop and 2 GB became the new standard

Meaby I noob but i cant to figure out this phone, now i back totally to stock, lock bootloader, s-on and Rom 4.1.1 and.......... Real Racing 3 works fine no lag, no stutter. Like i said before this phone is very unstable.
Time to move forward and get Smart with 2Gb ram and quad core, but i love this phone, he brings me so cheerful memories.
Edit:
Hey One more question... meaby this unstable is casue by battery? This phone have ~2 years, it is possible that battery cause all this issue?

Very unlikely. Battery could last longer if it's new but won't affect performance in such way. My phone is 3 years old and is still working ok. I'm not playing games with it and battery gives me only about 15 hours with 3 hrs SOT but it's still fine for any other task I used to.
