Reading all the reviews the one thing most of them take issue with is the camera on the Moto X. There is something very common between them, the inconsistency from picture to picture. Most say the Moto X is capable of taking good pictures but you need to put up with several bad ones as well. If you take the info from the reviews it's not a "Camera" issue as much as a "Software" issue. The timing of the auto focus to the shutter seems off as well as possibly the color & sharpness of the pictures.
I own a Nexus 4 currently and it doesn't take the greatest pictures either with the AOSP camera. One thing I have noticed is Cyanogenmod's Focal camera app takes better pictures. I tried taking pictures with AOSP, Focal and ProCapture app and comparing them. While I am not using the paid version of ProCapture the pictures are sharper and the color is spot on vs AOSP and Focal, even though ProCapture is taking 3.2mp shots and AOSP/Focal are taking 8.0mp pictures.
Link to ProCapture(Free) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neaststudios.procapture.free&hl=en
I know someone using ProCapture with their new Droid Maxx and says it has made a big difference in the image quality. This should obviously translate over to the Moto X as well. The full version is a few bucks and if someone is willing to purchase it and post their results for everyone that could help lots of X owners out.
Here are three pictures I took today and you can see how ProCapture's are sharper and the color is not washed out. First picture is AOSP, second Focal and last one is ProCapture.
I like the ProCapture app. I have the premium version. I will have to take some test shots to compare the two. However, I cannot find anyway of changing which app is launched when you use the twist gesture to open the camera. Every time I do it, it opens the stock camera. I have made the ProCapture app the default when swiping from the lockscreen but that does not apply to the gesture. Any ideas?
X
edit: One thing I wish the ProCapture had was an HDR setting.
HDR setting is in Focus/Scene option menu(second down on the left).
I'm very interested in seeing side by side shots you take. If you can take a variety of shots, in bright sunlight, the sky(good for color comparisons), low light, indoors, close ups, action shots, etc with both camera's and post them here.
As far as the gesture opening the app that's something you can't probably change with the stock software. Once developers start making rom's & mods for the Moto X I'm sure the gesture will be able to be reassigned to another app.

That's a lot of pictures. I will see what I can do.
As for the HDR setting, is it called something other than HDR? Cause it is not listed under the Focus/Scene option. I have the following:
Focus > Auto, Continuous, Infinity
Scene > Auto, Action, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Night portrait, Theatre, Beach, Snow, Sports, Sunset, Steady photo, Fireworks, Party, Candlelight, Backlight
Color effect > None, Mono, Sepia, Negative, Solarize, Posterize, Aqua, Blackboard, Whiteboard
Any comparison pictures you can take will be helpful for everyone. It can show its a software issue that can be fixed.
I'm using the free version of ProCapture, here is the HDR setting.

I'm really not so sure I see much of a difference. Here's my samples:
Moto X Stock Camera:
Moto X ProCapture Free:
Moto X Focal:
Olympus E-PL1 with M.Zuiko 17mm F2.8 lens:
iPhone 5:
Nexus 4 Stock Camera:
Nexus 7 (2013) Stock Camera:
This is done with zero tweaking at all, straight out of the cameras. Even the mediocre Nexus 4 camera makes the Moto X look bad.

I understand testing the app without tweaking, but the reason I did a search for moto x & Procapture was simply, the X doesn't give users the ability to access settings like white balance, exposure, etc. I'm currently on an S3, and was set on either an X or a Droid Maxx, but the camera quality was holding me back. To get decent pics on my S3 I have to play with those settings, but with the stock Moto camera software, I wouldn't have that option. Now if it's possible to get rid of the purple tint that some reviewers are seeing, or give it better contrast, I wouldn't be so apprehensive. But I thought the point of getting an app like that was so you could tweak the settings to get it closer to the better cameras out there.
ProCapture allows many more options to tweak your shots. I used backlight mode this weekend to take pics were my daughter was standing in front of a large glass wall of windows with the sun coming through. With out back light mode you could hardly see her, with it on she popped to the front of the image. This is on my Nexus 4.
Now if you haven't heard Moto is pushing out an update to T-Mobile users right now that fixes the camera issues. The pictures side by side show a dramatic change in quality.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7353/moto-x-update-dramatically-improves-camera-quality
Downside is can't use the cool wrist flick feature thing.
i agree, procapture is a very good camera, expecially to take panorama pics.
but in my opinion the big limit of this app is when you play with options and effect, because, while stock's camera reset values when you launch the app, procapture doesn't do that, but only for exposure (if you check it in settings).
so if you play with values when you launch in another time the app you have to reset all the values by yourself. i sent an email to the dev to make the app reset values when you lanch it.
I used Procapture far a while and was very pleased with it. Had you given FV-5 Camera try? I use it for now and for now i stay with it as it makes for me the best images.

You can do a separate exposure and focus though. I used to enjoy ProCamera but I think I can produce better shots with Camera FV-5.
Wow I just saw this post. I was about to give up on my Moto X camera and call it a loss for indoor photos.
Camera FV-5 changed that. This thing is great. Once you read through the manual to figure out adjustments, this thing takes great photos.

yes i use it since my RAZR. You have to read the manual (pdf) to get knowledge of the full potential of the app. The developer is releasing in some weeks a beta app for taking videos
by the way, there was a big bug when taking photos in portrait with Moto X. The images freezes. This was solved in the last update.
Sorry for bringing up something that might already have been covered, but there's one thing that I haven't understood completely.
There's quite a lot of talk about the camera not really performing that well, but looking into the matter I also read that this might be more software related than a hardware problem. (Another app might do the trick?)
The reason for asking is that I am thinking about maybe replacing my Samsung Galaxy S3 with the 16GB version of the Moto G, but I'm a bit hesitant because of the camera - especially since the one in the S3 is quite good.
I don't really care that much for MP's - they never really tell the full story - but if the quality between my current S3 and the Moto G differs to much...
Any input?
Thanks in advance,
/gosa
It'll be more the sensor that software...
Anothe camera app wouldnt make a massive difference to quality of the photo tbh.
Its just one of the tradeoffs for a cheaper phone unfortunately.

The photos he displayed to show the difference when using stock and snapchat show a vast improvement in my opinion.
Look at the post-it note text for the biggest difference.
Obviously software can only go so far, but the stock camera app I feel is clearly doing something wrong with how it sharpens/smooths the image. I'm guessing their sharpening algorithm is assuming a much bigger resolution and using too large of a kernel size for us. So it ends up looking blurry because the blurring becomes exaggerated. Regardless, using a different camera app will help out with these things. That is, assuming they aren't doing these corrections somewhere in the kernel before it even reaches user-land.

100% not.
I decompiled the stock camera app and switched off the Noise Reduction just to see how the sensor sees the image, look here:
http://www.android-hilfe.de/motorol...n-zur-kamera-bildqualitaet-5.html#post6803183
The stock app softens the image massively and then set a bad compression level. Look at the pattern at the Gauloise package from my other post and see how the stock app filters out all small lines.

Might be worth adding and changing the value to see if there is any benefit.
Guys,
Thank you all for your inputs, it's made for some interesting reading. Especially those example pics that shaftenberg posted gave quite a bit of info.
Yesterday I ordered the 8GB version for my wife to replace my old water damaged Desire that - after over a year of running "post-swim" without any kind of problems - is dying on her... I'm confident that the change Desire - Moto G will make a huge difference in image quality for her.
I think now the plan is to compare her Moto G with my S3 for some time and then - if I feel ok with the image quality - go for the 16 GB version.
Some people might think it's a bit strange to swap out the S3 for a Moto G, but the benefits of getting something more updated with regards to OS (and more open if you compare with Samsung and Exynos) and such... the only thing that worries me is image quality.
/gosa
I find that VSCO Cam is also better than stock camera, and probably also even better than Camera Zoom FX.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vsco.cam
The one thing I've found a huge benefit of the Moto g over the n4 and s3 is that its made for one hand. I often find with phones now days I end up when sitting down using them I use my thumb and for finger to support the phone and only half wrap my hand round it to get full use of the screen. There are no such issues with this phone.
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
This phone's camera is clearly not tuned well. The noise reduction is wayyyyy too high and the white balance is off.
The Moto X had similar issues and it was mostly fixed with an update. The same will probably happen with this phone, likely bundled with the Kitkat update.
I have read a lot of reviews online and magazines and is very interested in getting this phone for my wife. She only care for the phone with the best camera. She recently got a S5 but I was thinking getting the G3 for her. Can anyone tell me how much better the camera on this phone compare to the S5 or others. Greatly appreciated.
Can't speak for the S5 but the G3 cam poops all over the M7/M8 cameras.
the s5 is going to have the better camera, but the g3's camera is no slouch, it takes wonderful photos

S5 is the better camera in daylight, indoors and night i'd side with the g3. Main thing I like about the s5 camera is the sensor shoots 16x9 photos at full resolution, while the g3 is 4x3 in 13mp

I had the S5 for 3 months and bc i got drunk and went into the ocean to take a piss with my S5 in my pocket, it died of water damage.
i got the G3 and as an avid photographer, i can tell you the S5 not only takes better pictures indoor/outdoor daylight, but also has manual adjustments that very disappointingly, the G3 did not have.
G3 does not have:
- ISO adjustment
- Light balance adjustment
- no shutter sound mute
Others mentioned the overly simplified camera was done on purpose to give all owners an easier camera shooting experience. With that said, with all the options basically being on Auto, it still takes great pictures. I just prefer the S5's more.
P.S. there are camera apps out there in the play store (i.e. A Better Camera)

I just wanted to mention the shutter mute is illegal in some places which is why it's not an option, although there are plenty of mods out there to disable it. and yeah you get more control over the camera if you use an app other than the stock one

After owning a G2, yes it shoots very well and I was a bit surprised that the G3 did not either match the S5 on mp count or kept OIS.
The biggest difference with the G3 so far comparatively, has been speed and some depth. The speed of the G3 focus is insane and rapid fire picture taking is crazy good.
The screen on the g2 just looks a bit more on the solid and deep color look as compared to the g3. I prefer the screen on the g2 to be honest. Running CloudPro 2 and the camera is just that much better. Battery life kills what i had on the g3 by 2X the life span. G2 owner and happy. Had the s5 and just feel "nasty" when i hold a s5 due to just what they did or didnt pack into the device. The s5 had a great screen but thick bezels and that horrible TW! Camera was great but just cant stand SAMSUNG anymore. G2 has a few advantages over some of the high end phones and thats all I need to hear.

Hi gang,
Took the beast out for some shooting today.
What I love:
The camera software. All the settings, pro-mode, effects and stuff are really nice.
Camera is very fast. Very unlike some reviews claiming this is the slowest camera out there.
What I don't like:
Pic sharpness. Most pics come out with some water paint effect. Backgrounds, distance shots all come out washed. Macro shots are sort of OK but zooming in, washed out to some extend.
So I played around with various settings, differed sizes, all the same free post-processing effects.
I compared with similar shots I look last week with the old LG G4. Well, they are 200% better. Lets hope this is a processing issue that will be fixed with the next update.
What are your experiences?

Don`t forget we are running pre-release software, an update to smooth things up will come soon. Besides that i don`t recognise your issues on my device so far.
I am on B110. Is this a pre-release software?
I have a major complain regarding camera in video. I think is related to the stabilization. Almost all my video in FHD looks like waves. The image is very shaky. This is my second device as the first one was replaced. Anyone else observed this?
I really hope can be solved in an update.

Just tested it to see if it happens here too. Indeed when filming the image stutters on the screen (well, it's night here so not ideal conditions) but when playing it it looks nice, no shakes at all. That was at 1080p, 60fps. At 1080p, 30fps it looks smooth on screen and also when playing it.
Anyone noticed that the hdr mode is always on in bright light?
You will get the same picture with or without hdr, and that's something not good at all.
Is there a setting that turn hdr off other than using pro mode?

So, i have had mate 9 for 2 weeks now, not impressed, when i compare it to the galaxy s7 edge, it cannot compete, the galaxy s7 edge wins hands down...., also, the galaxy s8 looks to be worth waiting for, march/april release will see a great phone after their note phones needed washing out with water, lol.
Also, i wanted to ask you, i have the MHA-L00 china version and my Hi voice app only works in chinese, as does the music app, can you post and tell me if your international MHA-L29 has hi voice ((assistant app) and music app in english, if it does..., could i ask that you post the apk install files for these apps in english. As far as i am aware, Hi voice app is embedded into the system so may not be possible.
If possible, i wanted instructions to flash the international rom onto the chinese phone?

Well, the first pic is from the G3, full picture quality, automode, no tweaking
Second pic is from Mate 9 full picture quality, automode, no tweaking.
The V10.... Is resting in peace . Will be getting a MoBo soon from aliexpress and reviving it though.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto G5 Plus come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
More of marketing gimmick. Good hardware but worst software. Chinese developers don't know how to code. Lenovo killed the Moto brand

The camera is poor. I have no Idea why is there so many people defending the camera on this device, but it's nothing special.

It is advisable for you to stop posting on this forum coz you don't own a moto g5 plus which is clearly visible in your profile.
Camera is the main highly of the phone. ?
What are you talking about? I'm writing this from my Moto G5 plus. Just because you disagree with me it doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to post here. In my opinion the camera is nothing special, even my old galaxy s4 and Lumia 730 are able to get some better snaps in good lighting conditions.

Low light is bad compared to 2016 flagships. I just tested with my S7 and it kills the G5 Plus. If camera is most important to you, I recommend getting a used S7 for about the same price. Good lighting is fine.
I really like the G5 plus camera, compared to my old phones (Xperia z3 compact, moto g4 plus, nexus 4 and others) I think it's a really good camera for its price range. And I don't even tried to unlock the boot loader and use the hdr+ Google camera, thats looks even better on snaps.
The camera is okay. I take lots of pictures with it, they look fine.
When I really care about the picture looking nice, if I'm with other people, if those people have a modern flagship phone, I'll ask them to take the picture. And those pictures look significantly better.
Google's hdr+ really helps in low light too. Stock rom, using the 32-bit apk found in a thread here with camera2 API enabled via build.prop.
This is more light than I could see with my own eyes, alley building lights in the distance only. Forget S7, this rivals low light on my $2500 Sony A7s!

Ebay, Craigslist, and Swappa if you're in the USA.
Coming from moto e 1st gen which i bought for Rs 7000 in 2014. This phone has a pretty good camera at this price point considering that i bought it for Rs 10000. And i love the professional mode in this camera. You just have to know how to use the camera for good shots. It would be great to have Raw support in stock camera. But i love it.
Some samples.
I personally think moto did an awful work with this camera, even my 2015 nexus 5 beats it anytime its pitted against it.

Moto did screw it up with their processing of the image. But turn it off by applying the chromatix mod and extend your DR with the Google Camera from defcomg/savitar, and the pics coming off of this are actually pretty amazing.

Actually im waiting for moto to provide oreo stock ota. hopefully they will also release stable 64bit sources also as oreo only support 32 bit kernel sources as of now. If not i gues that is the final choice i have. Untill that I'm struck on good ol nexus 5. low light images on nexus 5 are just sweet despite having f2.4 camera.

Thanks dude
Any of you tried the new cam update on the G5Plus? I think it's great! I have the S7 edge and took pictures with both phones of the same thing. Then as they uploaded to Google photos, I had a hard time distinguish which is which without looking at the info. Moto G5Plus in low light. Ignore the mess, I'm before moving. I did not selectively focused just point and shoot. Look at the sharpness on the books and the glass bunny. These pics were made near midnight with only floor lamps farther away.
Glad they've been improving the stock shooter! I noticed an update, but for some reason the new app is having trouble with video recording so I might go back. Google Camera running on here has been blowing everything else out of the water, but those shots are very respectable.
