Is anyone else having trouble with getting this feature to work? I have my android watch paired, and my home set as a trusted zone, but still have to enter my pin every time.
Works fine with my watch and car. I don't use location based, so I can't comment there.
This is an android feature I beleive. The "home" location address never worked on my s5. So I never bothered with it on this note5. So I just used the other options.
On another note (pun) samsung has a widget that will display apps based on where you are, and you can set that up with wifi networks! Which is so much better. Hopefully either they, or google, move in this direction.
On another note (pun#2) there's always tasker.
I have the watch and home location function working on Note 4

So under settings I spot that I can enable NFC although when I try to install Google Wallet, it installs and upon opening I get told the app isn't approved for my country/carrier. I'm curious if there's any way to get Google Wallet to work (mind you, I have it installed but can't open. All solutions I've seen have been to get it installed). If Google Wallet doesn't work then what good is the NFC in the phone? What other uses can I find for it?
You can buy tags online, program them, and stick them all over the place. You can use an app like NFC Task Launcher to program them and assign tasks to different tags. For example, if you put one on your desk at top you can tap your phone to it and it will enable wifi, bluetooth, and turn your ringer on. If you put one in your car you can have it set the phone to silent, turn off wifi, etc etc

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Kinda boring I can't use the Google Wallet though! Oh well. Now to try figuring why AT&T won't let me install a visual voicemail app.
Also (although I haven't tested,) Android Beam should work. I don't know too much about it, but you should be able to tap your phone to someone else's NFC-enabled Android phone and send them files.
I have no idea if this actually works though.
only Sprint has access to Google Wallet right now. AT&T, TMo and VZW are launching ISIS which is a competing service with a lot more options than one bank and one carrier...

Yep, Android Beam works as well. Me and my friend with his Verizon Gnex did it and it worked beautifully.
Has anyone found an option to use the watch for standalone GPS navigation? I realize it would be a last resort since it's not as easy to use as your phone, but I.E. if your phone got left at home or whatever, I'd like to be able to use the watch for directions.
The Here Maps app requires BT pairing with the phone, which in my opinion, makes it useless. Because if you have your phone in your pocket, who wouldn't just use the phone??
EDIT: from what I can tell, Komoot also does not do this.
Any luck finding this? I just got the watch and was disappointed that this feature was not available since I'd rather use Google Maps if I have my phone on me...
I didn't own the Gear S, but it appears there was a Gear Navigator Standalone app that did just what you [and I] are looking for. It looks like the developer of the app is actually the one that makes a companion app for the Gear S2's HERE Maps as well (although that rely's on the BT connection still), so hopefully they'll come out with one for the S2. Anyone know about anything in development?

Yeah under settings > conenctions > then scroll down to the bottom for "locations" > turn it on and select the GPS method you want.
I have verizon, so it may be different for yours. Also, there is no GPS for the wifi/bluetooth model

Turning on GPS doesn't give you turn-by-turn navigation though. You can pull up the maps app and see your location, but in order to navigate to a destination as you would with Google Maps, Waze, a Garmin, etc you need to be BT-connected to your phone still.
Search for "Gear Navigator Standalone" in the Gear store. (It's there for me anyway; I'm in the US.) Claims to provide exactly what you want. Although the current instructions say for S2-3G users, "because of weak GPS signal under certain conditions, it is highly recommended to pair smartwatch with phone to get accurate GPS coordinates and internet connection."

Someone else pointed this out to me on another thread. Are you on a non-3G version? I think it has been temporarily pulled for the 3G version. I contacted the developer last night and he was quick to respond - said it should be re-released sometime in May after some big fixes.

Yes, that it explains it, I'm on a non-3g S2 classic.
I am quite interested in this -- for public transit navigation. Even paired with a phone, does it work well without a data connection?
In my gear S2 3G (AT&T) has a small bug with S-health application.
When I run I use the GPS in watch to make my track, and on the same route and the same place, when I put the option to walk it notes 1,2km in 25minutos, when I use the run option he notes 4.5km in 25minutos that is what that's right.
Someone with the same bug?
I have a Note 4 with Smart Lock. I wanted to set it up so that my watch can keep my phone from locking. I added the device to SmartLock successfully. Even if my watch is sitting right next to the phone, it is not unlocking it. I use a PIN. Is there anything else that I need to do, or is this just not going to work.
Thanks
I was looking for an answer to that too. I tried and it did not work at all.
I use tasker for lots of things, but I could never get it working with this. I have a task set up to unlock the phone if the bluetooth is connected to the Gear S2. Even when my connection is just fine, tasker doesn't see the connection and never unlocks the phone.
I use Gear s2 from Tmobile with my Note 4 with no problems. When locked I use patern not pin if that makes any difference. Running lollipop 5.1.1 , no root, latest gear manager from play store.
It is added to my trusted devices
This might be a misunderstanding on my part about how this is supposed to work. I have a PIN set up, and when I have my watch connected, it doesn't require the PIN. It just puts up the screen that I have to swipe. I expected that it wouldn't put up the swipe screen at all. I don't want it to, but can't find a way around it. I tried setting up tasker to disable the lock, but it didn't work. Apparently tasker doesn't know when the watch is connected. It does work for my bt headset.
I don't think it can be done. It looks like smart lock removes requirement for any kind password but doesn't remove screen lock altogether.

If you have one of those flip cases, it does unlock automatically. Other than that, I don't know a way around it.

Same issue here. Guessing a 2 part app (specific to s2 and android) might be able to solve the problem. The s2 app would communicate with the android app (not sure if background communication is possible for s2 apps though). Upon a cut in connection, the android app would trigger the lockscreen.
Thoughts?

I've never understood the need for that. When I don't have security on my phone, I have always just shut it off. An extra swipe accomplishes nothing.
Before the gear, I was using tasker to unlock my phone when connected to my wifi and when my bluetooth headset was on. I'd carry it with me, turned on, and my phone would not lock at all. It was flawless. Never saw the lock screen and never had to enter my PIN.
I might just go back to that, as the extra screen is really annoying and serves no purpose. I just have to remember to always have my BT headset turned on and on me. I always have my watch, but always seem to forget the headset.
I wish I knew why tasker doesn't recognize the the connection to the watch. My settings clearly show that the phone is connected to the watch, so it should recognize the connection, but doesn't. I don't know how much support tasker is getting any longer. I saw something about the developer having to take a break because of medical issues. There are now many other automation apps out there. Maybe I'll give some of them a try and see if one of them will accomplish what I am able to accomplish with tasker and my wifi/bluetooth headset.
When I add the watch to SmartLock, I get the following message:
Smart Lock can't detect the security features of this device. To help protect your phone, Gear S2 (393A) will only be able to keep your phone unlocked once it's already unlocked by you. Your Gear S2 (393A) can keep your phone unlocked when it's nearby, even if someone else is holding it.
Not sure what that means or what it does to the unlocking feature.
I don't know much about tasker but one time I played with tasker plugin called trigger. Maybe that can be help for you. It is possible that tasker looking for certain Bluetooth profiles being active and since gear s2 has no speaker there is not headset or headphone profile. On my gear s2 3g Bluetooth shows call audio profile.
Is anyone else using the Smart Lock feature and does it work for you?
If I enable On-body detection, that seems to work correctly. Trusted devices I haven't tried as I don't have any free BT devices to link to that aren't already paired with something else.
Trusted places however doesn't seem to work at all. It found my Home location that I have configured in Google Maps and I've enabled it, but no matter where I am around my home (inside or out), I'm still forced to unlock the device after swiping up. The radius is huge around the trusted location, so I can't imagine that it's an issue with GPS drift.
Op9 here and works perfectly on trusted devices . Quick as I hop in my car and it connects. I'll try trusted places and report back later tonight
Having the exact same issue, device and on body work. location does not.
Personally never thought location was a good idea. Other people you don't want in your phone can be in the same location. Just my 2 cents

This is true. However my phone receives incoming messages frequently throughout the day and the device is always on my desk in my home. It doesn't seem like much, but it's a bit of a pain to have to enter a code or even lean over for face detection to work.
Edit: Plus, face detection won't work if you're wearing a mask.
I was able to get it working.
Had to go into settings and give Google, Home and Maps apps Location access all the time.
Then clear storage on Google Play Services
And lastly if using a home saved location in google maps delete it and re add it.
This is probably a bit of a naive question for the advanced crowd here, but I could use some help in determining if I am just missing something obvious.
My company uses MobileIron MDM to manage work profiles on devices. On my S21 Ultra, there is a setting in work profile security called "Auto lock work profile" where you can choose a timeout before your work profile will lock and require a re-auth of some kind (fingerprint, password, whatever).
On my Pixel 7 Pro I noticed this setting is conspicuously missing. The effect is that every time my screen locks, and I then open a work app after unlocking my device, I also need to unlock the work profile again. This is pretty annoying and greatly impacts the usability of the work profile on the Pixel.
Both devices are running Android 13 (OneUI 5 on the S21), so my gut feeling is that this is one of those custom Samsung/Knox enterprise features that isn't part of Google's vanilla implementation of work profiles. I am hoping the community here can confirm my suspicion, in which case I'll probably have to return the Pixel and be bound to Samsung.
Also, yes I am aware that "One Lock" would probably solve this, but it's unfortunately disabled by my MDM, so not an option for me.
Appreciate any feedback.
I recently purchased Pixel 7 and observed the same thing. Your company server is probably is set to require re-entering Work profile passcode every few days but only Samsung devices recognizes that setting. Other device types will be forced to enter passcode after 5 minutes of inactivity.
