Accidentally tore cover above the earpiece, does it affecta water proof functionality of the device?
Could you post a pic to show how badly its torn? Otherwise you might just have to send it into repair

Yep that's bad send it into Motorola repairs I highly doubt your device is waterproof now. Sorry
Today I had the same problem. Only in my case it tore while blowing out some dust. It was like a crusty texturen and just disolved in thin air :s. Wtf, now I dont have any protection for the earpiece.
Did yours got fixed under warranty?
Is that plastic very fragile? Now I'm scared, I don't want anything to get in that space in my phone.

YES!!!! I barely even touched mine with a qtip to clean it and it went right through. Not acceptable...especially for a spot that's such a dust magnet! I'm going to call Motorola first thing Monday morning for a warranty claim. I unlocked my bootloader, but the two clearly have no connection.
BE VERY CAREFUL with your top speaker!!!! The damn thing must be made from tissue paper lol..It didn't affect the speaker's functionality, but as the OP suggests, I'm extremely concerned about the IPX7 rating now. I take mine everywhere I go, and if I get caught in some rain coming home one day I'd rather not have a dead phone because of this!
......and on a side-note, I'll still buy any other water resistant device, in spite of this. I'm intelligent enough to know that even partial water resistance is better than absolutely none. Maybe certain other people who shall remain un-named can't see that....but that's their problem!

Wow! Hope Motorola takes charge of it... This is my first water resistant device, so I don't know if the earpiece is usually so fragile, but I think they should have put more protection to that.
I would hate to lose water resistance that easily I've also tried to clean the earpiece, lucky me that I've used only water to do that.

I got mine replaced today, so no repair. I don't know of it's a warranty thing die Motorola, cause the employee swapped it under the terms of the store. But it's almost like tissue paper. I ain't touching it no more!

Warranty or not, moto maker devices have to go back to motorola, though
I had a same problem.
Is there any charges charged by the service center

i dont think that actually affects water resistance much... can check out the motorola forums once... they have said it wont affect much, but better get repaired to stay on the safer side...

What ever became of this? Did they still do the repair despite the unlocked bootloader? Very curious about this, because Motorola told me that it doesn't matter if the repair is software related, the warranty is absolutely void after bootloader unlock.

Retail stores like Best Buy, if you buy their extended warranty, will have a warranty regardless of the bootloader being unlocked or etc; they only care about physical modifications.

I picked up the Consumer Cellular version for my wife at Sears which is the exact same as the XT1540. It was $149.99 and with the extended warranty, it was still cheaper than the one I got from Motorola. I locked it up the 2nd day she had it (my fault) and rather than fight with it, I took it back to the store and exchanged it for another.

I have the same problem, wanted to clean out all the dust and accidentaly damaged it. It is really really sensitive, bad design choice for a recessed speaker.

Im a little late here, but glad I read this. I usually clean my phone with a baby wipe and it gets any dust out around the ear piece, but now I will be extra careful.
I semi unlocked my phone prior to replacement. I went through all the steps and had the unlock code, this is after you push the accept warranty void button on Motorola's website. I was about to punch it through ADB but then noticed that the phone had a dead pixel. I spoke with Motorola and set up an RMA and they ended up sending me a new phone, well refurb.
I didn't know that physical stuff falls under same warranty so I thought even if you have a cracked screen but unlocked you can send it in, but from another thread I read you couldn't and this was after I sent out the phone so I was worried they wouldn't replace it. I know it wasn't fully unlocked to the point where it shows up on the screen but through their eyes I'm sure it was and it still got replaced for the dead pixel. I guess I got lucky? I still don't understand why physical damage isn't covered under separate warranty, I was going to extend mine but its going to be pointless.
Waiting for marshmallow to come out and then I will wait a few months to fully unlock.
Can I put a separate warranty on my phone through best buy? Also my main concern is that after a cracked screen replacement will the phone still be waterproof afterwards? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I saw few screen replacements where the screen didnt sit flush and it was raised more than normal, as if its not glued all the way down.
Another damaged earpiece cover reporting in. I just used a soft brush and it poked a hole in it. The material is very fragile. Bad design choice.

So I recently replaced my headphone jack and speaker recently using parts I ordered from Parts Universe b/c my headphone jack stopped working after I had dropped my Captivate face down on my asphalt driveway...
Anyways, my headphone jack works great now. Only problem... about a day after I had replaced the headphone jack I noticed a dark brownish/orange splotch in the top left corner of my screen that comes down about 1/2" from the top of the screen and then back up to the top of the screen.
Did I mess something up when changing out my parts? I have taken the phone apart before just to see if I could do it, and nothing happened... I never ran into any problems when taking it apart/putting it back together... Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?
I have attached a screenshot of my homescreen with some editing in Paint to show what it looks like. It is transparent, almost like the screen is half-dead in that area.

Here it is. It also seems to be spreading... was not like this a couple of days ago...
I was going to pass this up because I couldn't tell what was added in Paint and what's wrong, but thought I'd tell you that. How about an unmodified screenshot?
Also did you solder the new connector on with the board in the phone, getting the screen hot in that area?

Well I would post an unmodified screen shot if the defect was shown in it. But it's basically what I drew in, the area outlined in orange is the border of the splotch. It's like if you have a damaged monitor, but take a screenshot of your desktop it won't show that the monitor is damaged, it will only show what the desktop looks like normally.
There was no soldering involved in replacing the headphone jack and front speaker. I just stuck it in there and plugged it into the motherboard. That's why this is so puzzling... Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem?
Maybe I should try and re-install my defective headphone jack and see if the problem still persists...

Sounds like your problem right there. To me, it sounds like your screen is physically borked (i.e. you need a new screen), but I'm not knowledgeable enough to say that is the case for sure. It might be helpful if you can grab a camera and upload a few pictures, both with the screen on and off, so we can better see what's happening.

Although I dropped my phone over two months ago and the screen was perfectly fine after (I did have a silicone case on it, so the extra width saved the screen), not a single scratch. This splotch came into existence after I replaced my headphone jack this week.

Just another guess - it's possible that the screen separated partially from the gorilla glass covering it. That opening could be causing the brown splotch you're seeing - almost like a bubble in between a screen protector and the screen.
could it possibly be a thumb-print inside the screen? In taking it apart did you ever come in contact with the backside of the screen. The oils from your skin can heat up under there and cause the discoloration.

That does sound possible... I will take it apart again tonight and give it a thorough inspection.
It's really not that bad, only b/c it's in the corner, but it does really bother me. It looks terrible on anything with a white background though, like when you browse the internet or some parts of the marketplace.
Thanks for the responses guys. I will report back with my findings.
So I took everything apart last night again, replaced my new headphone jack with the old part and the splotch is still there... so it's not the replacement part I got.
All of the components look good, there's no dust or dirt anywhere, nothing rattles when I shake it... I don't know what could have happened...
I don't think I'm going to be buying a new screen for it, they run about $150 and for that price, I might as well get a new phone.
I'll just have to deal with it.

Try to have it replaced for free. It's a knowed phenomenon in electronics of all kind. Your replacement of the headjack might have just exacerbate a existing problem.

I guess it is spreading, since it looks much larger than first described...

Ok, so how do I fix it? Nothing looks loose or out of place to me. Everything fits snug and is screwed in, not loose or too tight.
Maybe just the way I snapped the outer plastic shell to the digitizer? Last time I put it together I snapped it in from top to bottom. Maybe I should try bottom to top?

If it is layer separation, I don't think there is a way to fix it. I believe the two layers are most likely put together with a special adhesive by machine. The discoloration is probably the adhesive being exposed to elements that it was not designed to come in contact with. I suspect this would have happened regardless of your activities, unless you inadvertently pried away the corner of the glass in your maintenance.
If you didn't break any "do not remove" seals while you were working on it, you may be able to get it repaired under warranty as a factory defect...
Yep. That's not going back together. Most likely it's from flexing a corner out to hard. Fixing it would require 3M Vikuiti type material. Well, that's from LCD backing. Maybe a polorizor for the front. Take it all apart, clean the surfaces in a cleanroom. That kinda thing. Not fun.

All because of a stupid broken headphone jack...
My phone's screen already has a scratch on it. I took off the 2nd screen protector thinking things would be rainbows and unicorns because GORILLA GLASS, that magical protection against all things sharp and pointy.
Not so apparently. The funniest part? My phone is rarely outside of my pocket, and it's always in its own pocket. There was a single incident in which it was in a pocket with other things, but the sharpest object in there was maybe a pencil. The screen also gives some pretty heavy flex with I push down it.
Hmm, thanks for sharing. I was actually just about to take the protector off for a clean feel sake. Guess now I won't.
Yeah, I hate to have to be "that guy", but I guess the uncertainty about the screen can finally be laid to rest. It's not GG.
It is gorilla glass confirmed by Motorola and corning, put this to rest. Its scratch resistant not scratch proof

So is it reasonable to expect a sea of nails to not scratch the almighty Gorilla Glass, yet have to whip the old "-resistant, not -proof argument" out when extremely light contact with something as comparatively dull as a standard #2 pencil brings it to its knees? I don't wear tight pants either, so don't even bother.
Please, people. Take the wool from over your eyes. I'm seriously starting to doubt if this thing is even glass.

Source? I've had 3 other devices with GG, no scratches on any of them, and they've had long lives that went through the wringer from drops to keys in the same pocket. This thing has 2-3 noticable scratches on it already. I plan to keep the screen protector off since I hate them and the damage to others $20-40 resale (at the time of sale, probably more as of today) has been done, while I can live with them.

When I first got this phone one of the big questions was did it have gorrilla glass or not. Some people said yes and some said no. So I went on Gorrilla Glass's website and sure enough the Triumph is listed as having their product. Apparently some people still choose not to believe but I don't know why Gorrilla Glass would list the Triumph as having their product on their website if it didn't have gorrilla glass. When I first saw a video showing the removal of the second screen protector and how by removing it made it more responsive and took away the bluish tint I was still reluctant in doing so. After getting a scratch on the screen protector I decided to remove it. Best thing I ever did. I've had no problems personally but remember highly scratch resistant not scratch proof.

Funny, because this is my sixth Triumph. Saying that I got a "lemon" would imply that this is an isolated incident of poor construction. This clearly isn't the case. The Triumph is a shoddy phone.

Sounds like you wouldn't be happy with any phone.
My phone was briefly dropped in water. I quickly dried it off, and powered down the device. After letting it sit in rice for a day or so, I powered it back on. It boots up just fine, but the touch screen does not work properly. I can't even get past my pattern lock screen, because the touch screen does not sense all the places my finger goes. I am considering two things. 1 - going the RMA process and returning the phone to Google for another one. I'm sure somewhere along the way they'll discover that the phone got wet, and I'll be screwed. 2 - I've read online that you can disassemble the phone, and put rubbing alcohol on it, and blow dry it and fix the water damage.
My question is. Will removing the back, and trying to fix the device myself void the warranty. I would love to get the device working on my own, but also fear voiding out any possibility to use the warranty in the future. Or if I can't fix it on my own, I'd like the warranty/RMA rout to fall back on
Any help, or experience with this is much appreciated! Thank you!

You dropped it in water. You already voided your warranty. Opening the back and trying to fix it yourself really doesn't matter at this point does it. If you manage to use rubbing alcohol and through some magic of chemistry reset the sensor and return the device for RMA all you've managed to do is commit fraud. Be a man and accept responsibility for your actions instead of expecting Google to pay for your mistake.
This thread should be locked before I can't contain myself as nicely as poster above me.

Not true. The warranty doesn't cover water damage but the warranty is still intact so long as you don't try and repair it yourself
To the OP - just claim on insurance or buy a new one. You're not gonna fool Google by trying to cover it up
Doesn't anyone get insurance? Mine is against damage, loss, theft, drops, water, whatever.

That makes no sense. If the device is subjected to things not covered by the warranty, it is null and void at that point.
Same with opening the the device and perfectly putting it back together. They may never know it was opened and probably will still honor the warranty for other claims later down the road however. Water damage isn't covered by warranty as you mentioned but that doesn't mean you have a warranty anymore either. The microphone could stop working tomorrow and it wouldn't be covered by warranty because of previous water damage.

Water damage isn't covered by warranty as you mentioned but that doesn't mean you have a warranty anymore either. The microphone could stop working tomorrow and it wouldn't be covered by warranty because of previous water damage.

Not true. Say someone dropped it and the screen cracked. This isn't covered by the warranty but if the microphone went this would be covered unless it can be proven that the drop damaged the mic. OK, in this instance the water has killed the phone but the warranty isn't technically void in its entirety

Perhaps. Google MAY cover things clearly not affected by or caused by water. Something like the button rattle. However currently Google replaces the phone with a new one, not refurbished (at least according to the rep I spoke with).. They will NOT do that with a phone that has water damage. This would open the door for people to drop their phone in water and then get a new one claiming button rattle.
The OP is clearly having issues related to water damage and is therefore not covered under warranty.
To the OP, I would suggest leaving it in rice for several more days and trying again. Sometimes more time is required. Sometimes it doesn't help at all.
@joeman55 - if you paid for the phone using a credit card (that provides accidental damage warranty), you may want to go that route.
I wish. I just paid for it using my debit card. I think for now, I will let it sit in rice for a few more days. Then, if that's still not working, go the RMA route. I had a friend who did that, and it worked out for him.
I see, one guy has no honor, but he's your friend.
So its OK.
Things perpetuate if no one makes a stand to do different.
It's clear, the change won't start with either of you two.

Just got mine from Sony Store.. and yeah it's not perfect, at first it annoyed me like hell, because as you notice, there are some gaps and faults due to poor build quality. But everything is not perfect, and those gaps are just minor. Luckily the phone has no problem so far, but I still worry, will there be anything to concern in the future? like after using the phone for a few weeks, the camera will become worse or anything like that? pls share your experience, guys

What am I looking at? What's the problem? Are you asking if your phone is going to fail at some point in the future. Almost certainly, just like it is the destiny of the human race - of every race and species - to become extinct. And at some point after that, the sun will expand and burn up all that ever was (except the voyager craft, which will escape intact, and I just regret now that the gold record they stuck on it in the 1970's couldn't have included Rick Astley because the idea of rickrolling some alien civilisation 20 million years from now arouses me). Until then, I'd try not to let it worry you.
Nice post, sorry for making you confused.... because most people have faced bunch of problems on this phone, so I was just worried...
Nothing to worry about that I can see. Have had mine for two months and it looks just like yours, no issues.
Nice, you got one with even gaps so that's good. Just make sure you get a case or protector for the back, I love the phone but the back glass is pretty soft I have some minor scratches near the bottom edge despite being careful.
Thanks all!!! I will try to find a case and screen protector

What do you mean by "gaps" and "good"? 0.O
On many phones the screen is uncentered so there is almost no gap between LCD and frame on one side and a big gap on the other, yours is good. Mine is like yours. For those who have it, its just a cosmetic thing.
Looking at the contents sticker showing no earphones I am guessing you got it from TMO?

Can you put here some photos like bluesky? or if you like send them on pm... just for curiosity, next month I'll buy a new z3 again, I hope in a unit without the issues we know very well...
My current one is a week 39. I will post pictures here tonight or tomorrow.
I have gone through 3, because T-Mobile got a bad batch:
1. had evenly set/centered screen but light bleed
2. had uncentered screen and back glass so big gap on one side
3. had uncentered screen and back glass so big gap on one side and purple camera on sided of pics, and light bleed all along one side. (Week 40)
4. Current phone, everything is perfect (Week 39)

Yes it happened to me as well. I was too lazy to take a shot of that corner. It was bulged out a little bit, but only if you look very closely. One thing I'm afraid is that will those gaps on the edge (or the ugly corner we have) let water get in?

There is glue under the glass and the frame actually extends inwards a bit. Don't worry about gaps unless you see a lot of light coming through between the frame.

Thank you, that helped a lot. Actually I have tried "washing" it twice, but only 30s or less, so not sure if it's defective.

Just curious why you chose the one for 80 when there are ones for 59 to 69?
I have gotten this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-Mo...e174428&pid=100005&rk=1&rkt=6&sd=152201847036 or this one https://www.fixez.com/store/motorola/motorola-moto-x-pure-edition with no problems
Because the others I looked at did not have speaker grills.
Also saw this a lot of the repair videos use: http://www.repairsuniverse.com/moto...reLCDframeblk&utm_campaign=JerryRigEverything

Replaced screen on my nexus 6, should be similar. Not that difficult.

I'm thinking to change mine from service center because of yellow tint.
I've replaced the screen twice ,added pogo pins to the second sim slot which I broke out (its just glued in) turning my xt1575 into a xt1572 using chinese dual sim software (works better than FI) I like using Verizon and Tmobile at the same time in the US, I literally have service everywhere, I';m only using a Verizon Tablet Sim cause I have many other SIP numbers linked in. I live in Colorado and need a **** load of numbers.
Its really easy to change the screen, I strongly suggest spending a few extra bucks and get one thats already on its frame or GOOD LUCK GETTTING THE OLD ONE ON THE NEW FRAME, YOU JUST WASTED BUCKS IT IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE. YOU MUST GET THE VERSION WITH THE FRAME OR YOu will be attempting to remove your old frame, clean it, and pray you line everytrhing up right (and it takes about 5 hours longer with a heat gun) I can change a screen with frame (the speaker grills pop off and pop onto the new one you must pull out straight and push in dead straight. I promise this, did it twice.
The hardest thing is getting all the little screws back in without torquing the screen and making little light colored spots, took me many hours the first time of adjustment to get it right and it didn't last.
Itrs been a pretty good phone but it is no droid x. its chinese as hell. I dropped a sledgehammer on my droid x., tore out half the aluminum frame but left Gorilla Glass one perfect (Gorilla Glass has only gotten ****tier) plus a rounded screen is downright stupid. I dropeed it on a empty pill bottle one time, another time it was just broken creen facing in in my pocket. It is no American phone, its Legend all the way.
Still good phone, still extrodinarily hackable if you get the **** away from android its basically a shark running debian with the antennas I've soldered onto it now running my scanners. Check previous posts to se where I soldered, I gained (lost) 10 points rssi on 2.4 all around bluetooth goes forever and 5G well, its fast. I noticed having more bluetooths and wifis in range made my location accuracy jump. I don't like that/.
I've changed the screen also after dropping it.
And I would also suggest to get the version with the frame.
I have 2 little spots on the left upper side and right bottom side but they aren't anoying.
I was happy that my screen was working.
How do you know if the screen has the frame? I'm looking at this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-LCD-d...sh=item2ca7621020:g:z3AAAOSwCypWnjQc#shpCntId. @JeffreyM @NixonP
Same here, i ordered one with the frame, but i still want to know..... i ordered btw this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252361820613
And opening the phone was a peace of cake, only you need to look you really got all the screws out. i almost forgot the one that was mounted on the Motherboard.
Also popping out the speaker grills is easy peasy work.
I'm looking for one from EU so I avoid paying import taxes but I think I'll have to order one from outside of EU. BTW do you notice any difference in the display quality?

I do not believe that the one that you are showing the link to has the frame, it doesn't say it has the frame in the description and if you look at the picture and look at the top of the screen where the speaker grill would go, if it had the frame you would not be able to see through to the white background, it would have the black frame to hold the speaker grill and you would not see the white background.

Did you ever figure out a reliable trick for this? My kid cracked my screen this week, so I picked up the replacement screen/digitizer/frame from fixez.com. It swapped out easy enough, but the only way I can get the light bleed to go away is to back the nearby screws off to the point where I can easily get my fingernail in the gap between the front and middle pieces of the frame (i.e. a no-go).
I've got an email out to fixez.com to get their input. It seems to me that you should be able to put the screws in till they're tight (not wrenching them down, but snug) without worrying about distorting the screen.
Hey I ordered the following from gadget fix and replaced it myself.
Item name:Motorola Moto X Pure Edition XT1575 LCD Screen + Touch Screen Digitizer + Frame
Item number:231820642901
Earlier I had ordered the one without frame but had to return it because it was impossible to separate our the frame from old screen and attach it to the new screen
I ordered the screen from China over eBay and replaced it today. The process isn't so hard but the screen is damaged (as shown in the picture).

I had a similar issue with my replacement screen and it turned out that the screws were too tight
After loosing them a little the bright spot went away. I will try that before ordering a second screen
As a new user, what all do I need to worry about with this phone's display? Are there very common issues where I'm likely going to need to replace this screen? I'm not looking to keep this phone for longer than a year. It's just serving as my daily driver until the next Samsung Note device is released (and proven not to blow up). Thanks.

Keep a good case on it and try not to drop it or bang the screen too much. The screen is more susceptible to cracking from drops due to the curvature and prominence of the glass from the frame. A face down or side drop means the glass is more likely to take the impact directly vs another phone in which the screen is flush with the frame. As far as defective screens (I.e. color or pixel issues) I don't think it is any more prominent than any other brand. However, of you have have submitted for and received an unlock code for your bootloader, your warranty is void, and Motorola will most likely deny any warranty claim.
