Wifi connections off - HTC One S

Hi!
My girlfriend owns an HTC One S which has everything on stock, indeed it has JB 4.1.1 installed. It has suffered "helicoptering" since a long time ago (just to note it).
A couple of days ago she told me that her One S wouldn't connect to her home Wifi network... So I took a look and realised that One S' wifi was enabled, but every saved connection was out of coverage...
So what do you suggest me to do? Perhaps to flash CM12 (or any Sense rom)? The phone is 3 years old and out of warranty (of course). Should I contact HTC's service?
Thanks!

This is a random issue and it's happening also on latest ROMs (Lollipop 5.1.1 for ex). I usually restart the phone or turn on/off wifi several times. You could try flashing a newer ROM but giving the age of the device it could be a better choice to replace it with a newer device. HTC Service Center will just reset it to factory and maybe they'll flash a newer radio/firmware (but those were not officially updated for years so they'll be old also) and will take you some money...not worth it in my opinion

I've unlocked it and flashed TWRP today, and after the first boot WIFI connections are ready! Now, I'm gonna flash CM 12.1 and say goodbye to all the bloatware.
Thanks for your help

Unfortunately, WiFi connections lasted some minutes... It's weird, it's like programmed obsolescence... Is there any way to make wifi work (like soldering some contacts as in One X)?

ICS Wifi and Restart Issues

Yesterday, I upgraded htc sensation to ice cream sandwich. After upgrading, wifi worked for few seconds and after that it stopped working. It's showing disconnected and not scanning the Wifi Routers around. Secondly, after every restart, it's shows that android is upgrading and optimizing the applications.
I have HTC_Asia_WWE HTC_044 Sensation. Any of you guys faced this issue? have you managed to resolve this?
For WIFI you can use this application , i used it and it's working fine with me now
http://www.fardjad.com/android/wifix/
also i have the same problem when restarting the device, and i have a problem with cell broadcast every time i disable it , after restart it's enabled again

I have exactly the same symptom on my Sensation XE - like you Asian sourced, but operating in Qatar. Like you - I know I could root, but would prefer to keep my phone unrooted and stock for the time being.
Reading about the Wifi fix at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21406675 it could be that HTC have screwed up the Wifi settings where it reads the country code is Qatar. Be curious to see if this is a common problem for all Qatari HTC ICS upgraders. The other common problem with ICS and WiFi seems to be the WPA_supplicant.conf file getting corrupted.
Question - if you rip your SIM out, can you see any WiFi SSIDs, and connect to any? This should show if you've got a problem a or problem b - as the WiFi country code is set by the SIM card. have you logged a problem with HTC? The more problems logged might be evidence they have a bug, rather then just telling you to do a factory reset or reboot your router.....
I have an HTC__038 (SuperCID'd) which I bought in the Philippines. I'm on Qatar for holiday. I'm running Virtuous Inquisition 4.0.1.
It's not the router's fault guys and factory resetting it would be just bringing the pain of reconfiguring other devices in your network. My nieces have phones running Android 2.3 devices and they can connect to the Wifi properly. WiFix didn't work for me either.
The thing was, that 5sec that the phone was able to see the SSID, I was able to configure it with WPA2 and managed to have it saved but after that no SSID's were recognized by the phone. So having no Wifi, I just left the phone alone to empty battery since I was just staying home.
After charging fully and doing a cold boot, the phone could connect to the home wifi with no troubles. I rebooted and emptied/cold boot again just to make sure and it connects without a hitch now.
I don't exactly know how this is a solution but you guys could try it and test your mileage on it.
ON SOMETHING UNRELATED: All I'm getting around Doha is HSDPA. Have you guys managed to get HSPA or HSPA+?

I've ripped my SIM out and tried it without the SIM, without success.
I'll point to my previous post that the wifi fix applictaion implies that some system security settigns for WiFi are based upon the country of the SIM card.
If everyone in Qatar (where HTC have no official presence) has this issue, I suspect the issue above. I strongly recommend that anyone who has the issue log it via the htc website, and be quite specific about the scenario, country of us and source of the phone. Enough users reporting the same issue will set alarm bells ringing and maybe get some action.
With regard to the previous post - tired a cold boot with a fully chraged battery and conencting to my home WiFi network without success. No idea if Qtel support HSPA/+. How does one tell?
Got same problem with restarting and optimizing apps, didnt figured out how to get rid of it yet, another thing that bothers me are all of sudden shutdowns, the usual message pops up sayin my batery is low (usualy 15-20%) and then it turns off the phone completely

I too am in Qatar, though I bought my HTC Sensation unbranded in the UK. Just upgraded to ICS and I'm without wifi, why didn't this come up on google BEFORE I installed it?
I've been onto HTC online and they tell me they need me to post the phone back to UK (or SPain/Taiwan if I prefer) and they will fix it, but I will loose SMS and anything else I've not backed up and all my apps will be wiped.
I'm furious!
A quick update. I've just got back home and taken my QTEL sim card out and put a UK Three sim card in and I have full wireless functionality, which is great. However I can't use this to make my calls, but at least it gives a clue that might lead to a simple fix.
Thankfully I didn't do the factory reset as advised by the muppet at HTC.
---------- Post added at 01:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 AM ----------
I swapped back to Qtel and wifi worked for maybe 10 mins, then stopped again, swapped back to UK Three and wifi worked again.
But this infernal upgrading apps everytime it starts is a PITA too.

Out of curiosity - does WiFi work if you remove the Qtel SIM and reboot?
Have you told HTC the solution/issue? I think as a community we've done pretty much all the debugging we can do - clearly Qtel SIMS are causing some sort of interaction with WiFi (system security settings) as per the WiFi fix apk for rooted phones. Ive also heard people having issues in other smaller countries which do not have an official HTC presence.
For those who still have the issue - I'm going to try to revert back to gingerbread tonight. I'm still very much a noob - I just want a phone to work and don't want to tinker with it - but it would appear that if I download an RUU from filefactory and have the right release for your phone it'll install automagically. If it's the worng release and you haven't rooted your phone, it won't install - no harm done.
After update a ICS my wifi turn on when I press power button all the morning

Yes, I tried no sim card first and it didn't work. Oddly it's not working with the UK sim at the moment, though it was earlier this morning.
I emailed HTC last night so obviously I've not had a reply yet.
I spoke to HTC about reverting back and was told it's not possible.
On the plus side, I've reinstalled the drivers and I can now get online with the phone using the USB cable with internet pass through, but it's not an answer.

On 1 - There does seem to be a lag issue soemtimes on wifi packing it in. On my inital run on ICS I'd used my phone for 5-10 minutes before it lost wifi, then it's been consistently bad.
I got a reply from HTC today, worryingly the ticket is status "pending closed". He asked for baseband and kernel release. Knowing the way an IT developer thinks it's a case of looking at the bug report for 2 seconds and thinking "this guy has rooted his phone and that's caused the issue - let's prove it by getting baseband and kernel release". I reiterated to HTC that by my count there are 5 people from Qatar who've posted on this issue, as well as some other "minor" locations. On the upside - at least the developer/QA team have looked at the bug and asked at least one question. Just need to get someone in the developer/QA team who's heard of the issue multiple times to take notice.
With regard to reverting back - not possible through official channels. But if you find the right RUU you can revert back without being rooted, to an official release. Subject to time tonight - that's my plan. You need to find things like your CID and use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195475 to translate it to the right release. Maybe use CID_getter (via market/play) and make sure you have the right SKU (I'm learning this on the fly!) and try and find the RUU at the filefactory link which is posted several times (I can't post it).
On the USB pass through - is there a special HTC driver? I couldn't get that working either!

For the USB passthrough I just went into HTC Sync on my laptop which I ever use and hit the update button and it installed the latest usb driver as part of it.
Another update:
I've just tried a Vodafone Qatar sim in the phone and that doesn't work with wifi either so it looks like a country issue rather than a provider issue.

Idle thought - I've had a thought that the issue might be character set related? I.E. Our phones are expecting one character set (in my case - the SEA language), and from the SIM it's picking up Qatar, running into an Arabic character somehow, and this is causing some sort of mis configuration on wireless.
I heard back from HTC again on their baseband/kernel question - I asked why the status was pending closed, they said it's part of the process they need to do when they go back to the user. They say to "kindly notice that HTC are working the issue".
As I'm the only one they're asking the questions from, do I revert back to gingerbread tonight and give up, or deal with the first world hardship of having a non smart smart phone in the hope I can help others?

Well I've spoken to HTC in the UK with a really nice guy there who didn't try to fob me off with the usual, reboot, hard reset etc etc
He listened to what I told him and admitted he has no idea what the issue is, they are going to report it and see what they can do, in the meantime he did suggest a factory reset would be worth a shot. I pointed out that if it is a fault with both Qtel AND voda that maybe they should stop the rollout in Qatar until they have tested it and fixed the issue.
I really don't want to have to reload all my apps and more importantly lose all the data stored in the apps so I'm off to find a backup.
If it's not working by Friday, I'm going to root the damn thing and flash a new ROM (even if it's 2.3) on it and sod the warranty.

I've done a factory reset very early on in this saga and it made no difference...
Edit - Someone in the ICS makes it to the middle East thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570818&page=2 says it'll be fixed this month, although I question how they can know this yet HTC are asking me for questions on the nature of the problem - I.E. still debugging. Lucky it's early in the month.

WiFi Problems with One S

Hello everyone,
my wife has an One S and is quite happy with it. she has only one gripe. sometimes the phone just cant connect to any wifi network. she noted it after a few days owning the device without using it much on the road, allmost just using internet at our house via wifi when she got a message that her free quota is used up and she will be slowed down till the end of the billing perios.
Sometimes (apparently when away for some time) the phone cant connect to wifi anymore. it does not show the wifi symbol in the notification bar. when i look in the wifi settings its constantly switching between showning the networkname and the encryption details and showing "connecting" every few seconds. because she has used up all her bandwith for this billing period i wantet to give her access to the bandwith of my contract via the wireless hotspot function fo my GNex. here we have the same problem.
when she restarts her phone it immediantly connects to any wifi network she has access to.
after reading a bit i found out about some bug in the one s but as faar as i understand it that leaves the wifi sleeping when not connected for some time.
i tryed the fix about the static ip which looked like it helped, but after a few days we are at the same problem again.
she is happy with the stock sense and her unrooted phone and does not really want to mess that deep with her phone, but she is also not really willing to reboot her device every so often (she had an issue with her old phone, HTC Desire, that also could be fixed with a reboot but she could not stand it and got the one s as a replacement)
is this a know problem with the phone or something i could get fixed from htc? some settings that we could tweek? would a custom rom help? if so is there one as close as possible to the stock rom that fixes it? so if it helps maybe i could unlock her phone and install an "allmost" stock rom so she does not have to handle a totally new enviroment besides sense.
Have you updatet it to the latest official patch, 2.21.401.10?
I believe there has been updates to the radio so maybe it will fix the problem?
the phone is now three weeks old. dont know about that patch. my wife is not here right now so i cant check the phone. was it an OTA update? cuz i dont remember that there was one. or do i have to download it from the htc site?
wife just came back.
cant find any note of a patch on her phone the version of her software is 1.78.401.2
when i check for software updates i just get a message that no new software is aviable.
i also looked at the htc page there i cant find any firmware for the one s. just the htc sync manager.
That is quite old version. And yes the version I mentioned was OTA update. I got it couple weeks ago.
I think there is two explanations why it isn't available to your wife's phone, at least yet. Either its carrier locked or sim locked or whatever it is called in english. Or its the model with the older S3 processor.
How to tell which processor it has? There propably is better programs to look at it, but for example you can find that out with an app called OS Monitor. Now when you open it, go to misc tab and look at the "Scaling Range". If its 384000-1512000 then its the newer S4 model which should have the update available.
Now if the top clock speed is around 1700000 then its the older S3 version.
just checked, its the s4 version.
phone also has no lock of any kind no carrier and no sim lock. its totally free.
it just has a 1&1 (german internet provider) branding. but according to the seller it just has a different start screen and a couple of 1&1 specific apps (that can be uninstalled).
Ok, then I have no idea why it isnt working.
There is this, but I think its too much of an hassle for a update and requires you to root the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033
I think you should take it to a service and tell them about the wifi issue. Maybe they can manually update it to the latest version to fix the wifi.

Wifi not working on custom ROMs

Okay, so I flashed Paranoid Android 2.16. Everything went great, flashed fine. But I could not get wifi to work at all. It would turn of and back on randomly, would not connect to any network, etc. So, I flashed the ROM by Team Viper. Again, flashed fine, worked fine, but Wifi would not work, it would do the same thing.
So, then I restored my nandroid backup, and wifi works grand. Is there something I missed? Stock isn't too bad on this phone, but I'm a flash junkie, and I'll miss JB on my GNex. PA works beautifully, except for the damn wifi issue.
So, any suggestions on how to get wifi to work on my custom ROMs? Loving this phone so far, I've missed HTC. The three things that would make it my *perfect* phone is SD card slot, bigger battery, and 720p screen. But the phone is gorgeous and feels amazing physically and performance wise.

Okay, I'm glad that it's not just me. I'm going to try again, sometime tomorrow or later today. I'm hoping that it's something that can be fixed with a little more digging, or if it's something that we need a wifi module for.
Same thing here. Just fixed a soft brick now I got utb ROM working. Flashed trick droid and WiFi is gone.

Okay, there was another post with this issue, something that I missed. But apparently it's because of the last update (ICS 4.0.4 & Sense 4.1).
Flashing ROMs over this update seems to be breaking wifi. Here's the other post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1913757
I'm having a lot of trouble with this as well. I just bought a One S a few days ago and got to work rooting, etc. After trying to install other ROMs, I can't get wifi to connect.
I have a T-Mobile version One S and can only assume it's gone through the latest updates prior to my purchase (got it through craigslist).
I have a decent idea of what I'm doing with these phones most of the time, but it seems like this time around I may need a little hand holding through the potential fixes. Like an idiot, I didn't bother to do a backup before jumping into flashing my first ROM, so I probably shouldn't be surprised that I'm having troubles.
Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm just stuck here.
What info do you need and how can I find it?
Extra info:
I did try the 1.84 and 2.35 partition fixes but still couldn't get the issue resolved.
Yeah.. I flashed the international version of trickdroid and my wifi signal was great, then I flashed the TMO version (I have a tmo one s) and it messed up my wifi signal completely, weird.
Have you guys found a way to fix it? Im having the same issues with all the custom roms, I've tried several of them and even different versions of the same rom(I thought it was an issues with that rom version) but the wifi never seems to work on any rom I flash. I'm using a htc vivid with att. If you found a fix could you pm me?

Flashed Cm 10 and data kept blinking on and off.

Hi I wanted to try Cm10 and data kept blinking a on and off. I tried get ril to see if it would help the situation. No joy. I am running 3.33 firmweare and I am s off. I ended up matching the radio with different ril from xda. Result was no data at all. I restored a backup and used get ril to match my current radio and I have signal again. However I would really like to run Cm10. Is there any suggestions to help with this problem. I've never had any data problems before? Can someone suggest a possible fix for this issue? I appreciate your input.
try flashing it again, this happened to me about a week or two ago and appears to be common with AOSP (the reason for this, I have no idea) but yeah if you absolutely need data, just restore a backup for about an hour or two
Here is everything there is to know about this problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873374
The short version is...there's no permanent fix yet. It will fix itself in a few hours. But it might come back.
This problem is getting much less common on CM10 over the last 6 weeks or so. Prior to that it was a VERY common issue. It could be a combination of other problems in the AOSP framework that cause instability and T Mobile refarming their network nationwide.
Thank you for the answers ! That's good to know! I am Tmobile so yes the incompatibility makes since. I will give it another try and see how it fares. If I still get the issue, I'll just restore my nandroid. Again thank you.

Restoring your nandroid won't fix it. The problem has something to do with how the data network authenticates your device and how that authentication is done with the CM Framework.
The variable (whatever is changing so that this is not occuring 100% of the time for 100% of t mobile users) is on the T Mobile network side. So simply switching back to your nandroid backup won't fix it even though everything was working fine with that backup. Both your nandroid and the updated version of the ROM have the same flaw that can provide that unstable data connection. And whatever T Mobile is doing that is causing that flaw to show will occur on every AOSP rom with an ICS or JB base.
Switching to your nandriod, switching to CM9, AOKP, Opensensation 1 or 2, etc etc etc...none of it will make the problem go away. Your best bet is to turn data off for a few hours and try later. Just ride it out until the network is no longer creating that data instability.
Just for information purposes the developer of the basic CM10 and OpenSensation 2, Bruce, thinks that the problem has something to do with the T Mobile network not being able to differentiate between it's MMS network and it's Data network. Those two operate on the same bands and are very similar, but there's some subtle difference in them so the phone knows the difference between and incoming MMS and an incoming data transmission. Bruce has done some work to try and help that. Some people saw the problem stop cold and other people have seen it greatly reduced. That's not confirmed that that's the issue and the improvement may be coincidental. With T Mobile refarming it's network city by city they may be gradually changing changing the way that's done and inadvertently fixing the problem.
How bout a Sense ROM? I flashed ARHD when I had this problem and had instant data

Thank you both. And thanks for the explanation. I suppose I got lucky that my backup did restore my data after using get ril again it was stronger. I did also hear T-Mobile is having tower problems or something like that. I'm wondering if that had something to do with it also. Maybe I'll give sense a try again. Too bad I was really hoping to give Cm10 a go. But I do need data. Again, thank you for your help!

We cant blame T-Mobile for this issue when we can clearly see it occurring ONLY on a specific handful of Sensation ROMs.
I've gone from a solid data connection on the stock Sense directly to a very unstable blinking data on bruce's CM10/Kang and OpenSensation 2 within minutes. Not a coincidence. All the while, my T-Mobile CM10 Nexus One sat next to me without an issue. Over the next day my gf complained about her Sensation's lack of data and still my Nexus One is fine.
Is being S-ON to blame?
idk, I guess I'll try the Android Revolution HD ROM next.

Is being S-ON to blame?
idk, I guess I'll try the Android Revolution HD ROM next.

What build date of Bruce's ROM did you use? This was fixed about 2 months ago for most people.
When you downloaded the ROM, did you get the first one on the list?
Sent from my Sensation using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the reply.

I just flashed last weekend. I used the latest builds from http://goo.im/devs/bruce2728
This one: cm-10-20130109-bruce2728-pyramid.zip (data blinking on boot)
Then this one: OpenSensation2-20121123-pyramid.zip (did not fix) (so I followed it with OTA Dec 3 - did not fix)
My Method (coming from Official ICS Sense w/ hboot 1.27 on T-Mobile Sensation 4G):
HTCDev unlocked
left S-ON
flashed latest CWM then did a "wipe data/factory reset"
extracted boot.img from cm-10-20130109-bruce2728-pyramid.zip and flashed it via fastboot (necessary for S-ON)
flashed cm-10-20130109-bruce2728-pyramid.zip via CWM
switched recovery to latest 4EXT with SmartFlash enabled
flashed OpenSensation2-20121123-pyramid.zip over CM10 (no wipe)

Update to Data will not reconnect once lost

i started a thread called " Data once lost wont re-connect" back in June
I still don't know what the problem is caused by but it's definitely lollipop related.
i have possibly tried every lollipop rom there is to try and it's always the same.
i'm a driver and cover the whole of Scotland, sometimes some obscure places
with no DATA signal..Once the exclamation mark was up then only a reboot would
sort out the problem and reconnect the DATA. I have tried 3 phones and they all
have the same problem. Now all the phones are on the Three network so it could
well be an incompatability between Three and lollipop??!
I have wiped the phones and put in 38r and 44s and i have not had to reboot
any of the phones this week so it looks like the problem is not apparent on KitKat.
I'm starting to enjoy the Oneplus once again !!!nearly had the samsung edge a couple
of weeks ago!!!
I was thinking that i might of been the only one with this problem untill it happened to the wife's
phone when on holiday. The daughter gave up her phone and went back to an iphone so tried hers on lollipop
and the same problem .
Hope this might help somebody out there it's been driving me insane and although i have had to forget lollipop
and go back to KitKat the phone is now back to being usable and i get my emails and whatsapp when i'm supposed to
Paul
I use Calkulin's ROM, currently on the latest, with EE and don't get this problem.
I drive a lot for my job as well, so would expect to see this if it existed.
I don't know what it could be. It all points to the Three network but why does it not happen on KitKat? There must be some issue with Three/Oneplus and Lollipop, especially as the problem is there on all three phones i have tried. After months of trying Lollpop ROMS and different Kernals i am totally stumped, but revert the phones back to 38r or 44s and everything is ticketyboo !!
I'd be tempted to put one of the phones on Calkulin's ROM, then stick an EE SIM card in (just get a PAYG for testing) and compare the results.
I presume you have double-checked the APNs are definitely the same?
