If the N5 doesn't live up to your expectations which phone would you prefer instead even if cost were not a factor?
Is there another carrier flagship phone that you are satisfied would be flexible enough for you to be able to do all of the following?
root, rom;
restore to stock rom if necessary;
return to store after restoring stock rom;
upgrade via carrier upgrade plan after restoring stock rom?
make a potential carrier warranty claim after restoring stock rom?
If the Nexus 5 doesn't list up to my expectations, I will go back to my Galaxy Nexus. It may not be the most state of the art device but with CM ROM's and faux123's kernels, I can't go wrong with it.

That's actually the phone I own also but I've got it pretty heavily loaded over the last 2 years. I really think I need at least another gig of ram to run well and a faster processor wouldn't hurt. The non-removable 2300 battery on the N5 is just a real disappointment. I've only owned nexus devices so far and I'm a bit concerned that a carrier flagship may not be flexible enough.

A non-removable battery might be a deal breaker for me. I like to be able to just swap batteries if needed. I sure hope it doesn't end up with a non-removable battery. I am not a fan of LG stuff in the first place and I avoided the Nexus 4 for various issues. With T-Mobile not announcing another Sidekick anytime soon, I need to upgrade. I don't like the physical home buttons on phones so that has kept me away from the S4 and other phones. My original Galaxy Nexus actually got damaged due to heavy rain I got caught in and I couldn't get another from my carrier. I ended up getting an S4 to trade my mother for her Galaxy Nexus.
To be honest, nothing beats the Nexus experience to me, and I can't even think of other choices with what I have experienced. When I think of a Nexus Phone I don't really give a huge deal for the hardware internals, because it's not really meant to be a show off with the latest hardware and the largest battery. Samsung soon will hit a 1000 cpu cores into their Exynos bully maybe, and yet their Touchwiz phone LAG and stutter. A properly minimally optimized OS over a good deal of hardware is what Google brings, not to forget the minimal design of the phone, and oh for a damn good price - I wouldn't ask for more.

I played with the LG G2 for over an hour, and decided it was too Samsung 'cheapie' plastic to suit me. The HTC One Max would be my next phone, despite an S600 chipset, based on durability and useability, and those speakers would come in quite handy at times.
prob moto x
If the Nexus is a no-go on Verizon I'll likely wait until the Moto Maker site goes live for VZW and at least get 32 gigs of internal storage. Feels really good in the hand and super smooth

+1 - love just been able to swap a fully charged battery. Extremely convenient... though from the leaks it looks very unlikely. Though I'm quite over my S4 atm and wanna try something different - the N5 looks like it could be a good choice.

That it does. That's why I have been looking forward to it. The camera sticking out a bit also bugs me about the phone also. These two things are bugging me very much. With the time I get out of my Galaxy Nuxus battery on normal use, it might be fine for me for normal daily use. If I need to go out of town though, camping, or some where I just can't get to a charger, I'll have to hold on to my Galaxy Nexus to make sure I've got something I can stretch out for a couple of days.
The wireless recharging for the Nexus 5 is something that really caught my attention as a good thing. Being able to just sit my phone down on my desk when I get in and have it charge is awesome! The screen also looks very nice for slightly under 5 inches. Hopefully the announcement and launch kicks off today.

yeah me too about the battery thing. I like to have a removable batt so I can buy an extra and swap it if my other one drains. But I think powerbanks are also helpful for non-removable batteries as well. #confusing hahaha
The Nexus has always been a developer only phone. But as it is for the camera that megapixels don't matter, so it is for the battery that the mAh won't matter. We have previously seen that the phones with an extra large capacity battery yet not perform as per the expectations. Atleast Google doesn't stuff their phones with bloatware like Samsung. A Nexus always comes with a minimal OS coupled with a balanced hardware at an unrivalled price. A non-removable battery & no expandable memory have always been the let downs, yet 32GB is enough for me for storage & a battery lasting just over a day is well enough for me. Nexus ftw !

I'm currently on an OG Note, recently bought a new battery and I have little problems with it. I'm mainly bored with it now and the USB port has some problems (€10 to fix). Minor issues and I'm sure I could use the phone for another year without ever really being bothered by it. I don't play games, so I don't really need all that raw power the new devices have. I have been looking for a new device for some time, just to have a new gadget and all.
I work for HTC indirectly so I have a One lying around here that I can use, but I can't root it so I have no use for it. I can't get used to the new Sense and their strange softkey layout (though that's more the fault of developers that don't keep to the design guidelines of Android, than it is HTC's).
I also had the S4, which I liked overall, but I found it too expensive, it had useless functions which I didn't want to pay for. Especially since you lose a lot of them when you put a stock rom on it. It has an AMOLED screen which, after two years of the Note, I'm not very happy about (uniform colours are a pain, and it degrades too fast). And it looks just like any other Samsung device (and I'm bored now). - I did get hooked on the infrared functionality though. I miss that every day.
Then the Z1 came along, looked refreshing and the waterproof stuff is a giant pro. Useless camera, but the rest was pretty good. Unfortunately the screen dissapoints.
So now I'm waiting for the Nexus 5. Absolutely no useless functions. Just a good and powerfull device that can last for another two years. No screwing around with roms and stuff and a good price.
If it dissapoints, I might go for an S4 as they're now in the pricerange of the Nexus 5 or I'll stick to the Note for another year, to see if something better comes up.
If not the Nexus 5, I'd go for the Oppo N1.
With out of the box CyanogenMod, IPS 5.9 inch display, and top-notch camera optics and dual user-controllable flash.
I have (had) the S4 and sold it today. I was extremely dissapointed with it in just about every way, and with the addition of Knox locked bootloaders being sneaked in by Samdung, that iced the "sell it now" cake for me.
I'm actually back to using the SIII in the meantime, and even with piss-poor driver support, it runs CM very well.
my choise is between Nexus 4 or Nexus 5

Actually, as far as the hardware goes, I am quite impressed with g2. That display seems so much larger than other phones of the same physical dimensions. Battery, processor, storage, etc. no limitations except no wireless charging. (except verizon version)
A play edition would be very tempting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem likely with the N5 being a somewhat close cousin. If the N5 had the exact same g2 hardware it would be a no-brainer for me even at a much higher cost.
Hello, nowadays I am planning to buy new phone, and Nexus 5 is in my options.According to you is it worth to buy it now ?.Nexus 5 is nearly 2 years old,and I am planning to use my new phone at least 3-4 years.Performance and battery are priority.
Well worth buying - even today it has great spec for very affordable price. Fantastic screen, great battery and most importantly - pure Android 5.1 which comes with huge community.

just get it! N5 is a great phone. :good:
The battery is Underpowered, other than that, a good device. Just don't pay full retail, I would pay full retail in Nov '13 but not in April' 15
I've got one and I'm looking for another as a spare, as others say it's a great phone. Mine outscored the S5 on antutu) The only phone I'd change it for is the rumoured Nexus 5B.
The battery is not grt which is why I replaced it. They all loose about 20%a year. As someone else said get rid of unless apps and it is OK. I'm on # lite rom# which comes with about 4apps)

Try some LSD and there will be no battery issues! And the Nexus5 will blow your mind!
Yeah the battery is bad compared to the flagships (and even some similarly priced phones lol) but a solid device that definitely offers bang for the buck performance.
Out of the box, its a fantastic phone but let down by the battery. If you are comfortable with rooting and replacing kernels etc, this can be addressed.
On the other hand, look at the LG G2. The battery if fantastic without any modding and most of the bloat, even a noob like me can disable. Speed wise, I'd say its 20% slower than the Nexus 5.
If just comes down to how dirty you want your hands to get.
To give you a comparison, I've had both running the same apps and this is what I got battery wise for my typical usage, (my signal is also very poor.)
- Nexus 5, Standby time=40h, Screen on time=2:30h
- LG G2, Standby time=80h, Screen on time=2:30h
Just remember that everyones usage and signal strengths are very different.

Great performance but poor battery not future proof if you want to use it for 3-4 years
desire 820 is a good option
I think 2300 mah is sufficient under normal circumstances.Galaxy Alpha has 1800 mah but I didnt hear any problem about battery or s6 has 2550 mah which is nearly as same as N5.Then, why N5 battery is insufficient compared to other phones also using stock android ?

Yes, the G2 has the same SOT as the N5 in my experiment. However, the standby time was DOUBLE.
In my days of the N5, I couldnt trust it to wake me up in the morning if the battery was below 30% at bed time, (as sometimes my signal is really bad in my flat.) On the G2 however, it can be as low as 15% and has yet to let me down.
If I had to pick between the G2 and N5 to last me the next 2 years, it would be a tough decision but I'd go with the G2. I dont think either of these phones would be good for 4 years though. :crying:
Nexus 5 is a great purchase. The only thing it seems to not be future proof against are high intensity games and higher resolution streaming options that may come our way. As a daily phone, I can't imagine needing much more power than what it's got.
In fact, I purchased a N5 back in November 2013. It started failing two months ago (this was a first-run version with the old ceramic buttons prone to breakage). I upgraded to an LG G3 - the G3 is a gorgeous phone, but I kept wanting my old Nexus 5 back. After a week I bought a new N5 on amazon and returned the G3. I have no regrets.
If anything can be a perfect phone for power users, this is it.

So i ask for your opinion for an successor of our nice little phone.
What will / did U buy next: S7(edge), Sony, HTC, Honor .. ?
A screen rather big, a living developer community, maybe water resistance - this is my desire..
a pen, edge screen? - i didn´t use them to often..
S7 Edge, if you wait longer s8

S7 or S7 Edge is a great choice since you don't need the pen
I wouldn't go to other companies since most of them are not water proof like the S7

I don't see a real reason to move from this phone.. I have not seen any relevant update in the latest smartphones.
Yes, you get a slightly faster processor -in real life usage, insignificant improvement- and a barely upgraded camera.. So unless you are just bored of the phone there isn't something really interesting out there.. The s7 edge? is basically this phone with a smaller form factor and edges that doesn't have any sort of special functionality.
For me, smartphones have been basically the same since the iphone 5s- galaxy s4- lg G2 -note 3 generation .. all the new stuff are just gimmicks and performance in real life barely improves at all, because the things that you can do with a phone are limited by the form factor and the small screen and companies have not been creative enough to deliver software that actually can take advantage of the increase in processing power and ram memory.
This phone had the potential to do a lot more stuff than it actually does.. for example: when you open windows in the browser the tabs should be located in the curved panel so you can switch between them easily (like in a desktop).. sadly companies don't give a sh*t about exploiting the potential of their phones a few months after you bought it.. you will get 1 or two updates that change a little bit the look of the notification bar and icons and that's it.. People should stop buying new phones that doesn't do anything new or better than their current phone. We are basically telling companies that we will buy any crap they release even if it barely have any advantage over a 3 years old phone.
Ridiculous high resolution? you have it (1080p was already crisp enough!)
Good camera? you have it
some curve? you have it
Marshmallow? you have it
Nougat? most note edge have an unlocked bootloader now, so eventually you'll have it
A note 7 edge is like us600 you can get a note edge on ebay for us200! it is ridiculous.

I agree with all your points. The only thing bad about this phone is the battery. It's cancer. It barely lasts for more than 4 hrs wih max sot of 1.5 hrs. Has to be on a ventilator(readowerbank) for most of the day. And the worst part? Samsung India seems to have branded this device as "obsolete" as Im not able to get an OEM battery from the various Service Centers that i have tried.
This device had the potential to be much much more. Poor dev support(no offence to the few lovely devs we have) , sub par battery is what limited its future prospects:crying::crying::crying:
Root the sucker and get a proper O/S.
Ebay for a battery and don't look back.
From what I've seen, most hardware upgrades are accompanied by more bloated "operating systems".
Why?
So they can sell you a new phone that's already out of date when it's released.
That's the way the computer business works.

Well, in that case just get a nexus or a one plus whatever.. atleast with those you can try a bunch of different roms and mods to keep you entertained. Everyone is talking about the Google Pixel now.. but it looks ugly and boring as hell, for me it looks like a cheap Chinese phone with really cheap paint or an HTC from like 6 years ago.. if it wasn't a "google phone" nobody would even look at that thing.
If you get another phone be careful, it seems those days only T-MO is not blocking the bootloader.. get a phone that is confirmed to receive the new OS soon.. the last thing you want is to get a phone and be stuck in the same OS as your current phone for 6 months.
Within the last 10 days i have purchased a Axon 7 and got a LG V20 today. Gonna sell my Note Edge to a friend. I am currently leaning towards the V20 but the Axon 7 is putting up a dam good fight. Either phone would be a worthy upgrade for different reasons, sans the S-pen imo.

T-Mobile still has NEW Note Edge phones at some stores around Atlanta. I am waiting on a warranty replacement for my Note 4, then I might jump to a Note Edge. I just don't feel like keeping a refurbished unit unless it's as good as what I had before. The one that died was in beautiful shape, I kept it in a bumper with a tempered glass screen protector.
I'd keep the Note Edge

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Note-Edge-B...660894?hash=item3f70d0a25e:g:fa4AAOSwj85YRfhm YISHDA 6500mah, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, at this sounding like the more/most realistic reasonable battery capacity for it's size, nice two layer case 1 hard plastic back and 1 rubber overlay back. $44.75
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mugen-Power...hash=item54400a1fe0:m:mTl97i6XR1J83fcek8GleJA Mugen 6000mah, only down side I saw on xda user reviews is the metal kickstand gets hot and it covers up the speaker, hell though a kickstand and who can't go wrong with Mugen??? $89.95
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PowerBear-S...900748?hash=item46594c90cc:g:iT4AAOSwx2dYDAKR PowerBear 6800mah up and coming new battery star company, I just recently heard of them a month ago or so when I searched for extended Note Edge batteries and they had solid good reviews, nice two layer case 1 hard plastic back and 1 rubber overlay back. $35.99 These same guys also make Note Edge Slim batteries, I'd trust them over anyone if getting a slim battery and never fall for that doubly extended slim size battery capacity, it's a proven lie if not alone by physics, if ya want double or triple the capacity you'll need double or triple the size.

Review Results: ZeroLemon and Mugen tied in 1st place, I'd put ZeroLemon at 2nd for their mess up on the rapid discharge but it's the biggest if ya get lucky on one that ain't defective, then I'd also give Mugen a 2nd place rating cause of their being the highest priced so this ranking it's a fair placement and I'd place PowerBear at a firm, solid and steady 3rd, newcomers always get it the hardest... LoL! The same size as Mugen for the price of Zerolemon(Or less) though! But watch this review super detailed on the Note 4 7500mah PowerBear battery

Thanks for the exhaustive list. I'll look into it
I've been looking at getting an Honor 8 for a while. I've held onto my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 while I look for a good replacement. I'm tired of Samsung phones and the Honor 8 looks like a good alternative. It's slightly smaller, which would make it comfortably fit a lot of accessories that my note 4 is barely able to fit.
My main issue is that the Honor 8 doesn't have a removable battery. Has anyone else had issues with this, or are there solutions to this (is it easy to open and replace)? I've had to replace my note 4 battery twice. I don't fancy getting the Honor 8 and having the battery die on me in a year. I know a lot of people would have upgraded phones by then, but I tend to hold onto mine. If my note 4 wasn't bootloader locked, I'd probably keep it for another year or so. Plus I like having a couple of phones that I can switch between because I use them to mount to my bike when I ride.
Constructive input is welcome.
Thanks!
That's a very good question you're asking there. I've never been a fan of non removable batteries myself and I've bought replacement batteries for my other phones earlier but nowadays you can barely find a decent phone with a removable battery.
Originally I wanted to buy the Xperia Z5 but seeing that it gets hot I thought that the non removable battery would die after only two years maybe and I like to keep my phone for two or three years at the very least, preferably until it dies.
So far I haven't experienced the Honor 8 getting hot but then again, I don't play heavy games on it. Keep in mind that excessive heat damages the battery health.
After buying the phone I've watched a disassembly video and it seems rather easy to get access to the battery. But I don't expect to change the battery before at least three years.
Also to add to this I've never changed the battery on my three year old Galaxy S4. Plus this phone gives you 5-10 hours of screen on time (5 hours when on LTE and 8-10 on WiFi). I sometimes charge it once every second day or just top it up to get that feeling of freedom when your battery is fully charged.
I've had my Honor 8 for about a month now and was wondering how the thing is opened up. I haven't tried, but looking at the Youtube video I found on how it's done makes me pretty confident I never will try. It DOESN'T look easy. I don't upgrade my phone every year either, so hopefully it never comes up.
I'm stucked on my Galaxy S5 because I can't live with a phone that it does not have a removable battery ! LG is the only manufacturer that keeps releasing devices with removable batteries, but I will never buy an LG. The Honor 8 is excellent, but no removable battery ! I'm really stucked...
I've watched this video:

I'm not sure that you have to remove all those components before you can remove the battery.
It's understandable
I was a note user before too. Switching to something like this where battery cannot be removed was tough to adjust to. But I have not yet faced any issues and non removable battery concept is working good for me.
I just bought a Honor 8 coming from Note 5! Awesome!

Root yet?
The honor 8 like most huawei phones is opened through the front screen itself by applying over 160 degrees Fahrenheit of heat directly to the screen to melt the seal. The phone has screws you must remove before the face can be lifted off the body. There is no way to swap the battery on the go unless you are one of the best phone surgeons ever known. You could try a battery case or carry the huawei portable charger with you. The huawei portable charger is quite difficult to find making it expensive. It has a 10200 mah capacity so u can get about 3 and a half charges from it and it can use fast charging which is nice. I think you can get it on newegg. Its very tiny for a large mah size. I have one myself and highly recommend it. But like most portable chargers it takes a while for the pack itself to charge.
Hey all,
I wanted to make a quick rundown of my review of the s9 so far. I have the sm-g965u on T-mobile, I moved from a TMo Galaxy s5 that was rooted with a 7800mah battery. At it's peak i'd get about 3-4 days with moderate use but with 1 gig of ram moving to the s9 is a huge improvement. The speed of this phone is unbelievable. It's incredibly snappy.
My biggest issue is the battery life at this point, my battery info shows at 3500 mah but I can barely finish a day with light use with full battery. I never had this idle drain with my s5. It's 10:28am here and after 46 minutes of screen time, 23 minutes of waze i'm down to 86%!
I'm hoping once root and roms start getting pushed out for the U variant things start improving or Samsung fixes some stuff.
I am also coming from S5 and used it with the battery that came with it, 2800mAh I guess, charge it twice a day at least to keep it running, I have heard the same about S9+, the battery can only keep a day running. Samsung will definitely fix these issues in an update. Not sure when that will happen though.
Btw does the size bother you? S9+ is taller than S5, not sure if it will easily fit in front pockets of pants easily.
Good luck waiting for that custom rom...Because even on the GS8+ after a year there are no custom roms for the U model. For exynos, development could be amazing because of project treble.
Basically, don't get your hopes up. If you have an issue with battery (which to be fair you probably will), try and disable some of those apps with package disabler pro, install greenify and hope for the best.

Oh yeah, The size does great! I put mine in my back pocket, will have a zero lemon on the way here soon. I put other things in my front pockets... It's either in my pocket or on my desk with my Gear s3 taking over.

I was actually really curious about that thank you for that, I'm guessing i'll find myself moving over to the OP 6 when it comes out and just selling this one.
So you've moved to a phone with a SOC that's probably 3 times as fast, has 6 times the RAM, a much bigger and brighter screen, and a battery less than half the size, and you're surprised it doesn't last nearly as long on a charge?

I had a pretty big thought process I was going to go with, but since I haven't picked up the S9+ will just say "sorryboutyou".
I have an S5 laying around here and had a Note 3 and 4 with extended batteries. I never saw 3-4 days EVER.
Treo 600 representing! That 650 upgrade was the bees knees though. Got that advanced coupon at the conference in Dallas and by the time they showed up from that "deal" I already had been using my Sprint one for weeks.
What on earth is going in here ? Lol ????????
I used S5 for 3 yars. Battery life is same as S9+ but S9+ is much, much faster and better at all.
