[Q] SOD On Multiple Roms- Hardware Problem? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New to posting here but I have been lurking for quite some time. I'll keep it brief here.
Suddenly, since flashing a 5.1.1 ROM, my N5 has been experiencing a sleep of death issue. Namely, once the screen turns off, it does not respond to anything. Pressing the power button does not wake the phone, and neither does plugging it in. After some time (~1 minute), the phone will reboot itself.
I know that this is not an uncommon issue, but the reason I have been forced to query the forums is because I have been unable to solve it by flashing ANY other rom. I've tried 5.1.1, 5.01, 5.0, and 4.3.3. I've searched and searched these forums and others to no avail. I've done countless restores to stock firmwares and 3rd party roms alike, removed apps and added them again, but nothing has solved my issue. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a hardware problem- that would be truly tragic.
I've pulled a kmsg but cannot attach it here as I have never posted, so I pulled a line that I believe is of interest, and would really appreciate it if you guys would look over it and tell me what you think.
Thanks!

X7510 Keeps Locking Up

Hey folks,
I have been having a lot of problems with my X7510 lately. The screen keeps locking up in standby mode. When the device is in standby I turn it on and it prompts me for my password. After putting in my password I just get a black screen with the word "password" at the top. While the device is in this state I can still sync (and see all of the files on it) when I connect to my computer. The screen on the device, however, is locked up. This problem has been happening several times a day lately and I cannot receive calls when it happens (nor do I get any indication of missed calls). The only way to get the X7510 to work is to do a soft reset.
At first I thought it might have something to do with the password manager, so I turned the password off today. A couple of hours later I found it locked up anyway. When I pressed the power button it did not come on at all, though the GSM and BT/WIFI lights continued to flash.
Is anyone having this issue? Were you able to figure out what was causing the problem? I am very frustrated right now. My device locks up so much that it is practically unusable since I have to do a reset 2-4 times a day.
Yes- I'm seeing the same issue from time to time. Haven't had time to investigate yet.
Last time it happened was yesterday- Green and Amber lights were flashing, but all buttons unresponsive, and had to do a soft reset.
Running PocketPlus 4.03 as a front end.
That is probably a software issue. Better enumerate your softwares and find out the common one causing it. Usually start with the last one you installed prior to having the problem.

I agree it's definitely a software issue. The only recent addition for me has been Spb Keyboard. PP4.03 has been on since day one, and did not initially seem to be associated with lockups.
When I have time, I'll try and narrow it down a bit.
I have not installed any new software in over six weeks. The only thing that has changed in the last week is an update to IM+. I have uninstalled it completely and will see what happens. If this fails I am not sure what to do.

Just for the record, I don't use any sort of Instant Messaging!
With my Advantage on the ultra-extreme blinks I suffered the tortures of the damned, tortures of the damned. No less than once every couple of hours I'd find my device locked up. Upon direction from my kind forum mates, I decided to uninstall the last software change on the not-so trusty X7510. After removing the IM+ software the PDA still locked up two more times that day. I gave up hope and decided to do an hard reset.
The next day, however, it did not hang up at all. The same goes for today, so after locking up five times a day for a week I have not locked up once in the last 48 hours. No hard reset and all is viddy well, little brother, Viddy well.
Unsure if it was the IM+ update or not, since it locked up twice after the uninstall, but I will not be reinstalling the IM+ update. In the name of science, I will install the original version this afternoon and see what happens.
Most gracious thanks to all those who took time out to reply to this thread.
I can concur that 3rd party software running in the background is usually the culprit.
In my case, I'm having an on-going saga with Hebrew localization bought from P.D.A.C. If I put the device to "sleep", with the email program set to download every 15 minutes (via wifi - no SIM installed), I come back to find a device that will turn on when the power button is pressed (a bit longer than usual), but then no response from any hardware button or screen - a soft reset via the hole in the back is the only way out.
I can in general say that the localization has other problems, like slowing the device down, and generally causing unpredictable hangs, but I'll save that for another thread.
To their credit, PDAC have taken a stab at trying to fix it, but since they don't have (and apparently don't intend to purchase) an HTC 7510 for testing, it's become a slow, hit-or-miss proposition.
One of the problems for gadget fiends like me who are not programmers is choosing a device that isn't massively popular - the support by third-party developers is not adequate. So here I find myself trying to learn how to fix what should work properly out-of-the-box.....and being frustrated by lack of background/knowledge.

Had this lockup problem since i received the device.
The other week in an attempt to fix this i have flashed to the latest 3.29 Rom from cmonex (thanks!) with ExtRom 3.29. As i have a Chinese x7510 version this ExtRom has fixed Opera text block problem, but still had constant lockup after putting unit into sleep mode.
Yesterday, i tried option 'Do not lock buttons' in Key Lock under Settings. Since I have not had one single lockup! Even having in sleep overnight, hit power button and up pops today screen. Normally i would have to soft reset.
This is what i have done so far. I'll have to start installing apps and see how it goes...
G'day from LA
Hi AvantX,
Another Aussie here, but living in LA for the last 7 years.
I loaded cmonex's hard SPL on to my x7510 some time ago, but so far I've been loathe to load an other ROM on to my x7510 as I have been unclear on the return path to the stock rom in the evet of a mishap. I've been hoping to see some ROM development on this forum similar to Kaiser & TyTN but so far we have not seen too much, other than the promise of AP4 amd MichyPrima's ROM somewhen.
Can you show here some screen shots of the 3.29 ROM? Does it look the same as the stock ROM and how does it run compared to the stock ROM? The stock ROM is 3.27.405.3 - is 3.29 an improvement? Does loading 3.29 affect the radio - mine is 1.58.
Thanks mate in advance.

[Q] Random Unresponsiveness

First off, there are other threads on this topic but none of them seem to have an answer, and if you find an answer please post a link instead of telling me to search more.
Sometimes the phone randomly becomes unresponsive, its not with any certain app or anything, it just randomly happens. Usually pressing the sleep button and turning it off and on fixes it. It started in Android Revolution a while ago, stopped, and then came back a month later, I wiped everything and installed MIUI hoping this would solve my problem, well it didn't.
current setup
CWM 3.0.2.6
MIUI 1.7.8v1
FULL WIPE
CATTLEPROD KERNEL NOT OVERCLOCKED
DEFAULT THEME
Like you stated there are other threads on this. Please use them instead of opening a new one. There are many things that can lead to lag. I would look for others on the same rom as you and compare.

[Q] Hearing small glitchy sounds when pressing screen (no special pattern)

Hi there
First some specs:
Nexus 4
PA3.99-RC2
Franco.kernel.plus 188.
SuperSU root
Latest gapps
I have tried asking in the the Paranoid Android Google+ discussion forum, but no useful answers yet. This is x-posted in N4 forum as well, but I thought asking here in general could give give answers from people with other devices too.
The problem:
When I use my phone I get random glitchy/clicky sounds from the top speaker (I'm pretty sure it's from there). It's a very quick glitch/click, and then it stops. It doesn't happen in a specific pattern, meaning that it's not like it comes whenever I press the back button or anything - it just happens sometimes. Sometimes more often than other. When I try to recreate the sounds (tapping a lot of menus, settings, apps, etc.) I find it difficult to recreate. It is REALLY random, perhaps mostly after I haven't used my phone for a while, and I turn it on!
Have anyone tried this, and knows a solution? It didn't annoy me at first, but now it really does.
As far as I remember it started when I upgraded to PA3.99. However, I have tried RC-1 and RC-2 and I have also tried stock kernel, Hellscore kernel and different Franco-kernel versions.

MTK 6589 phone freezes randomly - any idea ?

Hello.
I have a chinese phone, Inew I2000. ( clone of Chang N7300+ ). Well, to be fair it's Mediatek MTK6589 generic phone, like there's so many in china.
And this specific one have a pretty bad issue : it randomly freeze. The screen keep displaying the picture, but the phone doesn't respond to anything. Not even keeping the power button pressed. I have to take out the battery to reboot it.
I haven't been able to notify any pattern to those freeze. They will happen from 1 to 4 times a day. Sometime just while the phone is idle, sometime when I'm using it. It never happend to me in the middle of a phone call, but it happened while the phone was just sitting there. I would realise it was frozen when picking it, and realising it was not switching on of responding to anything.
I tried resetting it to factory setting, and re-installing the rom. It still happens. I am now wondering if this is a hardware issue, and if it is if there's anything I can do.
Google tols me that it seems other chinese phones have had the same issue now and then ... but I haven't been able to find a solution so far.
So as a last resort, I decided to ask to the place where I know of the most skilled people regardng phones and android ... here.
Just to mention, I'm not afraid of trying anything with that phone, including un-assembling it if it has any chance of solving the issue. If you have any idea, please share.
Edit : also, I tried looking for similar thread on xda, but didn't find any ... maybe I just didn't find the right keyword.
MTK6589 - Jiayu_G3S freeze
Hello.
I have unfortunately same issue and didnt find anything useful too( I have Jiayu G3S). But my phone freezes only when it goes to sleep and then cant be wake up.
First issue was bad gsm antena. And after some time (few months) it start doing this. It was only 1-2 times or few days nothing. But now it almost everytime Its really annoying, cause i use my phone as alarm clock and it didnt wake me up. Sometimes freezes and the phone is very hot. Like when u play games. I try many many roms, try not to instal many of soft, try new kernel and nothing.
I´ll be very glad if someone have some idea. Warranty is over now (expires in 6month) so returning is impossible
Thank you so much for any advice
Have a nice day Q
I dont really know if this would help because I got my Ainol Fusion Air tab (before replacing with my cm life) I had the same issue with the freezing...Try this.
Settings-WiFi-Advanced-Uncheck "Keep WiFi off during sleep"
Hope this helps

How can I stop my Note Pro (SM-P900) from freezing and random rebooting?

I purchased a refurbished (wifi only) model. The problem occurred from day .
The system will freeze after about 5 minutes and sometimes simply reboots, even when it's not being used.
I have done a factory reset and booted to safe mode but problem persists.
I think it is a hardware issue, but what should I look for or tell a repair tech?
I have the exact same problem. Anyone have any further information?

Read the threat " Flickering Screen" but only a last few pages as previous pages have no helpful information with many guessing solutions.
@Beut, could you please give a link to the thread "Flickering Screen"?
In various other threads people are refered to that thread, but neither by googling nor by searching the forum I could find it.
Thanks in advance!

Boy, this thread got sidetracked quickly. Mostly because you asked a REALLY IMPORTANT question. Once it got sidetracked, no one came back to address your original concern.
So here is what I know.
1. If your system becomes unresponsive - meaning any icon you tap on nothing happens, even when pressing the big button in the bottom center - tap the power button. It shuts the sceen off. Then hit the oval button, unlock the screen. It should work.
2. The random reboots probably means something has been changed or knox has been tripped. Possibly the device may have been rooted/unrooted once. It probably is a google thing. I personally HATE google+. Try to clear the davlik cache. It is located in /data/dalvik-cache - in the root area, if using Total Commander. You have to have root. Delete everything in this directory then do an immediate restart. On restart, android will rebuild each caching file for each current app, it may take a minute or two, but there will be a progress message all along.
Try those things
Do any of you guys have the Verizon or the SIM card LTE version?
If that is a YES, believe that I can help you.
(Regarding OP's WiFi model, I think that one needs to be replaced or returned)
