Hi Guys,
was about to pull the trigger on Amazon to buy this phone when noticed in Q&A section that US version only comes with few languages - not worldwide Android language selection. Since I was planning to send this phones to Ukraine to my nieces, I need to know if it is possible to re enable Russian/Ukrainian and what I would have to do. Root probably? Please only answer if you are sure of the working method, I don't want to just test theories.
Thanks.
I have 6045I and just changed the default locale using a local-changing app. You are right - the choices of language is limited to English, Espanol, Francais or Italiano. If you root your Idol 3, you can change locale easily-all you have to do is install a locale-changing app and run it. But I wouldn't want to go that route and I was able to do without rooting the device. You need to change permission using adb shell pm command (most locale-changing app displays exactly how you change the permission) before running the app.
Not all the menus and messages won't change to the language you change to of course, but you can convert some to the language of your choice. The app I installed has a Russian locale option.
OK, good to know. Thanks for prompt answer and good advise. Since no rooting is involved, phone should stay on the OTA updates schedule and this is very important to me. Could you please check if Ukrainian option is available as well? Girls mostly speak Ukrainian and, if I understand correct, locale determines the responses they are going to see when using any locale-aware app, like Google Market, Facebook, etc.
BTW, I tested this method with my own unrooted phone and it does work, though there is a bag of gotchas. Phone settings reset to English (as probably my phone does not use Android standard settings and the one it uses does not have prper translation), locale-aware apps changed language, but only in places, so it's a mix of Eng-Ukr. OK Google voice activation stopped working in the new locale (I can still use voice prompts, but can not invoke it from home screen with OK Google phrase) and Language settings do not have new option for the added locale, so the only way yo change it if someone changes it back to one of the default ones is through the locale app (I use Locale More Pro app).

So I usually keep my phone locked because its usually in my pocket. I frequently get text messages and it's kind of a pain to unlock it and relock it each time I get a message. Is there any way for my phone to unlock the keys when I slide it open, and then relock when I slide it closed?
Thanks.

I tried this program too
Potentially it's a nice app, but... Some Remarks:
- It's language dependent. This didn't work on my Dutch s710 ROM, but does work on the English and Polish ROM. Version 1.04i also supports German and French languages.
- Sadly the latest version referred to in that topic, version 1.04i, is no longer available on the site where it was linked. I also googled, but no luck. The other linked version 1.02i is still available trough the link but you have to register on that Polish site (I managed, though my Polish is not that good). And I suspect the guy that wrote it is no longer active at this forum.
Question: did anybody download the 1.04i version and can he/she make it available for download again somewhere?
- The most important problem: it's demo, and therefore it only unlocks the keyboard one time per application run. After one unlock AC Unslide 1.02 closes itself. The funny thing is there is no full (pay) version available that I know of...
Question: Is there any way around this, for example by some auto-restart trick/tool?

Yes. You can use mortscript. As I don't have the app, neither the htc, cannot test anything, but it would be something like this (don't blame me if it's wrong, just following examples):
#RestartAutolock.mscr - Restart the application when it finishes.
result= ProcExists ( proccess name for the autolock application )
if (result < 1 )
{
RunWait( application_filename.exe )
}
Make it repeat each x seconds/minutes/whatever and you're done
If you're curious...
Mortscript
EDIT2: Attached 1.02i version cab (you didn't need to register on the polish site )
That's a nice solution. Thanks!
I just reinstalled the program and found out there is another problem that makes the restart idea impossible... unless you have a Polish ROM, that is.
The app defaults to the Polish language, so when you have an English ROM, everytime you start it you have to press the left softkey and choose the English language (option 2). I tried starting the program with parameters like 2, -2, E but unsurprisingly this did not work.
Too bad... it's a nice tweak.
can someone make it simple?
Performed update to Gingerbread yesterday - Install went smooth - Root went smooth.
By the way - not a total noob, just never actually created an account before - shame on me. Should be thanking people all the time.
Anyway - Today after booting when I try to speak a text message or speak a search in the market the phone thinks I'm speaking Spanish and adds text in spanish (not an actual translation, just what it thinks I'm saying in Spanish). Trust me, I'm speaking English, and I'm not drunk.
Google search feature recognizes my english and creates text in english.
I've checked all the settings in my device and all languages are set to English (US).
I've tried switching to other English formats as well. No change.
Any ideas?
Profile too new to post in Dev Section...
Also, tried updating keyboard to Keyboard from Android 2.3. Nice design, but didn't help fix the issue.
Tried scouring the site for this issue, but don't see it noted anywhere.
Thanks!
Strange
K, oddly enough - this corrected itself when I removed the Chrome to Phone app.
All set.
I want to install a non-available language on my US-bought idol3 4.7" (6039s).
I installed an "add languages" app from the google store, and it requires me to either root (overkill, don't want to) or run a command via adb. I unlocked developer mode, but still whenever I connect to my Win7 PC I do not see "cdrom/driver mode", which I think is needed to install the adb drivers. I only see "Media device (MTP)", "Camera (PTP)" and "Charging".
How to proceed?
I apologize if I am missing something basic, I am new to hacking android
Update: was able to enable Hebrew by dialing *#0972#, 972 being the telephone country code for Israel. Thanks Moscow Desire, now my wife too can use her idol 3
My original question still stands, why can't I see "cdrom/driver mode" after having turned on USB debugging?

You should see cdrom/driver mode on your device out of the box without having to enable anything...it's the normal method to INSTALL the windows drivers to a pc for adb access. I'd consider using the alcatel q software to bring your device up to the most recent firmware and see if you still have the issues.
@Moscow Desire
I would love to see a post with a list of these codes along with what language they enable? I know you used one code for Russian and now another for Hebrew?

Thanks @famewolf, I'll have a look later to see if anything changed after a system update that took place last night.
About the languages, although I did not test it thoroughly, it appears to be the international dialing code of the country whose language you want to add, preceded by 0's. E.g. 7 for Russia/Russian, 44 for UK/English-UK, 972 for Israel/Hebrew it would be *#0007#, *#0044# and *#0972# respectively.
Being a noob the forum is preventing me from adding external links, but English Wikipedia has a good page titled "List_of_country_calling_codes".
Dialing *#xxxx# appears to also change the UI, but for Hebrew (and I read that for Russian and Ukranian too) it is not perfect. In the case of Hebrew the right-to-left writing direction is not handled properly, e.g. in the phonebook "Contacts" are under the "Favorites" tab and vice versa. But if all you are interested in is the additional input language, you can switch the UI back to the default, and then after having performed the *#xxxx# activation once a lot of new input languages are available for selection. This is how my (wife's) phone is configured now.
Hello, I have installed gboard and everything was fine until I realized that deleting a word sometimes leaves last letter and that last letter can't be deleted. It's this case in Samsung internet and chrome. I even encounter with it here in this typing box. I think it has something to do with autocorrect?
I am actually having the exact same problem and haven't found a solution. Is this a known problem? Have you found anything online that I missed?
ME too
I use Gboard on S7 and Nexus7 all the time and never had problems with deleting letters. In Gboard settings for Text correction I only enabled Show suggestions, Next-wordsuggestions, Auot capitalization and Multilingual typing. May be You can try out what setting is responsible for Your issue.
Hi! My problem is different, but suits for this subject.
Last week I bought Galaxy S7 Exynos (Nougat) and installed Gboard. Unfortunately, predictive words doesn't show, despite enabling this functionality in Gboard settings. To be more precised, bar where words should appear is visible, but there are no predictive words on it. I googled about this issue and tried several solutions, including clearing cache, reinstalling Gboard, installing previous version - still no luck. I have up-to-date stock ROM. The only way to show predictive words is to add secondary language, i.e. English - but that's not best workaround, because I'd like to use Polish as my default language.
Do you have any idea how to solve this problem?
Hm, I have GBoard on my S7 Exynos since 2016 with latest official firmware and no issues. I have German as primary and English (US) as secondary and I get suggestions for both, depending on my selection.
May be, we can compare the settings on our devices.
@mausbock
Sure, why not. Attached screenshots are in Polish, but I believe all settings are in the same order.
Ok, I compared the settings. Beside the Emojis that I don't use the only difference is that I have two languages set up. I dropped the second for testing and auto suggestion is still working.
Hm, strange, but I think setting up a second language but do not use it, will be the best solution for now. May be, a factory reset will help on Your issue, but I would definitely not recommend this.
May be, English as second language is an option to post on XDA forums. [emoji6]
Sorry, I don't have any idea, why it is not working with one language on Your device.
Well, I tried addidng second language before. The only difference is that sugestion bar shows predctions in English - even if I turn them off.
Ok, if I understand that right, only the polish suggestions are missing? That's really strange.
Yep, that's true.
Hm, I added polish to my keyboard for testing and I get polish suggestions...
What build do you use?
Firmware is G930FDBT1DQJ1, the latest official german version without provider branding,
GBoard version is 6.9.8.183626756.
Well, same firmware (polish version to be precise) and Gboard build. I'm out of ideas.
Hi. My Mate 9 finally arrived yesterday! I bought the Chinese version. Even though I have chosen English as the devices language, there are several apps that still use Chinese characters, regardless of the set language, like the one for internet and the Dialler. While my long term plan is to use an International rom I probably won't try that till I get the bootloader unlocked, which may be a few weeks. Can any of the apps that use Chinese characters be set to use English? If not is it possible to replace, for example, the internet app with one from the international phone. Perhaps it would default to the language the device is set to. Of course the obvious thing to do is get an app from play store but I thought it interesting to try to get as much of the phone working in English. Thanks!
