[Q] How to Write-Protect a USB-Stick? - General Questions and Answers

Hello. If this thread has a low relevance, please tell me the reason.
I would really like to know, how to prevent any program to write some data on a Flash Drive.
I'd like to know this, because i have some things on my USB-Stick, which Antivirus-Programs detect as a virus. If they quarantine the programs at home, you can easily restore them.
But i will use this USB-Stick with many useful programs (and Hirens BootCD ). There are some tools there.
One of them is a Batch-File, which does take away the power from LogoDIDACT.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/logodidact-aka-ldc-prevent-remote-t2990164
It covers:
Shutdown Control
Driver Control
Internet Control
Screen Control
Remote Control
View Screen of User
Get Admin Rights
But some of the other programs will be detected by the eScan, which is installed on the Computers at School. EScan will Quarantine Everything. But to recover the files, a password is required, which only teachers etc. know. And they are not going to help me to recover the files, because they get very skeptical to me.
So i will lose this files for ever.
I struggled with ShareCash to get one of those files.
>>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/off-topic/truly-hate-harecash-aka-cah-surveys-to-t2990135
So is there any way to make the USB-Stick completely write-protected? (Read-Only File Attributes will not protect the files from Antivirus Systems. And IsoBuster will only recover 95 % of them, not 100. Because of the Writing Access. ) Like a Flash Drive with used-up write cycles. You will be able to read the files, but used-up write cycles will cause this: http://www.cnet.com/forums/post/0739af7b-317e-4f78-9bb2-59a3a93640c3/
Any useful help is highly appreciated.
If you also have problems or storys to tell, which are similar to this one, feel free posting here!

You could open it up, then google the chipset on the little PCB.
Find the datasheet.
Then read through the pinout section.
There should be something like a "rw_protect" , "wp" or "w/p" pin.
Then try to find out if it is enabled by a high or a low signal (~positive or negative).
If it needs a high signal, try to connect the pin to a positive sourve or a vcc pin on the chip.
If it needs a low signal, just connect it to ground or a gnd pin on the chip.
For example: ST72681 USB - Controller Datasheet
- On page 5 you find the pinout, and a pin called "READ ONLY"
- On page 16 you find an explenation on how to use it.

"virtual memory" in WindowsMobile6?

Hi,
my systemprogram in the Pocket Controller-Pro shows me very much unused "virtual memory". (See appendix) How does something likes this? Allegedly knows Windows Mobile but no virtual memory. For what is this memory useful?
And there is possibly an option to fallow RAM memory allocated? No matter how much program memory, Windows Mobile uses this virtual memory not, it will remain permanently 28MB free.
Und nochmal auf Deutsch.
Mein Systemprogramm in Pocket Controller-Pro zeigt mir immer sehr viel ungenutzten "virtuellen Speicher" an. (siehe Anhang) Wie kommt denn sowas? Angeblich kennt WindowsMobile doch keinen virtuellen Speicher.

No, the ram can not be the virtual memory. Virtual + Physical RAM more than 64MB. And the first one is the RAM. Show appendix.

let me rephrase what i said
virtual = actual ram available after the os has loaded to run the progs.
physical = total ram available (before os has loaded)
object= storage
Virtual memory doesn't really exist (hence its virtual).
It is a trick the system plays on programs to make each one think it has all the memory to it self.
This has to do with how programs treat memory addresses.
Since this memory does not really exist you can not utilize it for anything.
Here is a more detailed explanation.
Hi,
The virtual memory is 'virtual' - that is, although it is not physical memory, it is still memory that's available for the system to use for intermediate processing.
Sometimes, we find that the available RAM in our PC or laptop is simply not enough, when needed for intermediate processing. As a result of this, the system begins to run very slowly, sometimes so slow that it almost grinds to a halt. This is due to insufficient RAM.
I'm sure that most of you here have experienced this type of problem with your PC/laptop at home or work. The machine runs so slowly that you just sit there twiddling your thumbs, waiting for it to boot up, log you on, start that program that you want to use, or connect you to the internetwork, and so on and so forth.
The solution is either to:
1. increase the physical memory - i.e. buy higher-capacity memory sticks and insert them into the memory slots of your computer or laptop, OR
2. increase the size of the virtual memory.
With the second solution, a part of the hard drive is reserved for intermediate processing, as though it were an actual physical RAM, which it isn't. This then becomes a virtual memory, and is no longer available as hard drive storage space. The system would use it as part of its RAM, as and when it needs it.
This is especially significant when the system is processing memory-intensive programs such as Quake and similar. The processing is transferred from physical RAM, to the virtual memory. It gets processed in virtual memory, and then the result is sent back to RAM. It's so much quicker 'cos the available RAM is now free to process other less memory-hungry programs.
Thus, with virtual memory, programs run much faster because there is no more limitation on the size of the available physical RAM. You can, of course, increase the size of the virtual memory as much as you like but with some limitations.
Now, if only there is a way to get virtual memory in our devices, that would be great 'cos I find that a lot of action programs, such as car racing videos, tend to run very slowly in my device. With a virtual memory, such programs would run much faster.
Does anybody know how to set the virtual memory in our devices?
kiwi992.
Sorry kiwi, but you got it wrong.
You are talking about page file and that is wat is slowing down your computer when you run low on real RAM.
RAM is very fast. Writing to hard disk is very slow (compared to writing to RAM). When the system runs out of RAM it dumps parts of it to disk, but not to process them there. It dumps the parts it 'thinks' aren't going to be used soon and the whole thing is called a 'page file'.
If your computer were doing processing on HD instead of RAM that would take forever.
Virtual memory, and we do have it in our devices, is just a way of representing memory addresses. For instance it means that every program 'thinks' it is loaded at address 0.
Hi,
Fair comment but, hmm......, I beg to differ. Maybe we should just leave it at that, in the interest of harmony.

The OS does NOT support Virtual memory. Therefore, it's impossible to use it. You can emulate it but it will, in general, result in very bad results (see my linked comments & explanations).

[INFO] Cat NOVA What´s inside ?

Hello
this bad sunday i tried to open my brandnew Cat Nova Android Tablet.
It´s sold actually by Hugendubel and Weltbild.
It´s actual an cheap Android Tablet with Android 2.3
CPU is a TCC8033
it should have 1,2 Ghz but actual it seems to be only a 1 Ghz CPU.
Good site for Infos is http://androtab.info/
You could root it using the [APP]SuperOneClick v2.1.1for example. There is a little trick, found by a member of the http://www.android-hilfe.de Forum
DU musst aber wenn er bei Step 6 stehen bleibt einfach usb abziehen, USB Debug ausmachen..kurz connecten...dann wieder abziehen und wieder USB Debug an und reinstecken.
Click to collapse
after step 6 you need to unplug usb / turn off usb debugging / reconnect hte usb for a short time / unplug usb again / turn ON usb debugging again / plug in usb again an let the SuperOneClick tool do the Rest.
This method worked fine for me.
To open the Cat Nova:
1. remove any connections ( power, usb headphone, etc. )
2. remove sd-card ( if there is one inside )
3. carefully remove the rubber band that goes around the tablet. It is fixed from the inside on the underside left and right from the connectors. Don´t pull it out here !!!
4. start removing it by carefully pull it out for example on the upper edge.
Remove it around the whole table and let it hang on the bottom.
5. now you will see the screws which are around the tablet.
6. Pick up a little screwdriver an carefully remove the screws.
In my case there are 11 Screws.
7. Now begin to carefully open the backside of the tablet beginning at the top.
8. Be careful not to lose the Volume control wipe ( a little damn plastic part sitting inside only been hold by a little nothing )
Be also careful not to break anything on the bottom of the tablet
9. Voila Now the tablet should be open.
Be careful if you remove any of the shielded Tape as you may rip of any flat cable !
On the inside: EM86_V3 printed on the PCB
some unused connectors an pads
seems like there is a place for a mini pci connector and a
sim connector
unused 10 pin connector

[INFO] CAt Nova / Rooting / USB Driver Problem ? Here is the solution
If you are having trouble to find the right USB driver here is a solution that worked for me:
Pick the official android_winusb.inf which is included in the official
Google Android SDK: developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Open the android_winusb.inf an add the following lines:
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_DEED
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_DEED&MI_01

Hi
I have bought what I think is much the same tablet as the Cat Nova but with the difference that mine has internal 3g phone included as well:
aliexpress.com/store/701252/211239486-507494256/8-Android-2-3-Telechips-8803-Cortex-A8-1GHz-EM770-3G-Phone-Call-6-Point-Capacitive.html
So it is an Emdoor EM86 as listed in this thread.
I have noted that on the the cat nova homepage there is information about some FW updates:
tablet.cat-sound.com/index.php/support/nova-update
I am a bit curios to try and installing their latest update to see if it would work on my tablet but I am a bit unsure if the hardware difference would cause my 3G phone stop working. Also I am not sure if the Cat Nova updates only support german language... It seems like the Cat Nova team are planning future updates to ICS which is good news.
Or is there someone out there whos managed to install a custom ROM - I am having some problems with a nervous g-sensor and it would be nice to get rid of that problem.
I feel guilty here, and I am posting off topic, if this annoys someone I will delete this post (given this forum allows me to). I am a developer and one of my customers said that my game doesn't work on the Nova - as this is the only thread I have found posted by someone with intelligence, can you indulge me a minute or 2 and see if you can run: -

Hi Jonathan
I made a quick test of your app on my tablet Emdoor EM86, which from a hardware point of view I would say is identical to the cat nova, and it seems to work. The animations all seem to work. The only problem I could see is that part of the left most part of the screen is missing - a small part of the left most pile of cards is not shown on the screen.
I really appreciate you taking the time to check it for me. The chap said: -

I thought he may have a custom resolution, but he says its 800x600 - which works fine in the emulator. I guess I don't have a solution for him then, which is sad because I do like to solve the issues. I guess with the bits of the deck cut off it's still playable for you though, so his issue is something else again.
Again, thanks for taking the time, and apologies to everyone else
Edit: re-reading that German is he saying it's not working on a HTC but it does work on the tablet? Nevermind though, its possible he isn't running my latest version which I believe sorted those issues!

No, he said it's not working on both of his devices, one is a HTC the other one is the tablet. It seems to me that the screen resolution is too high for the game as he said that only 1/3 of screen is used be the application?
Are you using a fixed resolution?
I will also try it this evening, I'm using a HTC Desire HD.
Please don't ask me which screen resolution I am current using.... LOL
Best regards,
Harry
Ok thanks.
I am really beginning to feel bad about this obvious hijack - can an admin/moderator please split this thread from my first post?
The app does run for all resolutions which I can test in the emulator, from 320x480 to 720x1280. It handles wide-screen well, but, it needs minor tweaking for 600x800 as that is so square like - I took widescreen into account but not squares! I have done a fix to handle that, but its not released yet. This work is rather complex in that I am rendering the game using the OpenGL engine and 3D perspective co-ordinates with the origin at the center of the screen, but the on touch events are 2D Cartesian co-ordinates from the top left corner. There is significant math in there for calculating both how far down the Z axis I render my objects to fit the screen neatly, and reading and converting the touches as to resolve what card was selected.
Hopefully my next version 2.3, should deal with all resolutions cleanly.
Again thanks for taking your time to look at this for me. Professionally I write accounting software, and have done for 15 years, it is unthinkable on my part to have a bug which I cannot fix / work-around (bugs in accounting software don't go down so well for some reason!)
Cheers Jonathan

Yes, it is possible.
at android-hilfe.de there exist a "custom rom", which is at least based on the latest official (but not released) ROM and has some minor bugfixes
not a big thing like CM, but it is a good start at all.
at least, with this ROM the latest Version of all Angry-Birds are playable, which seems to be a problem with the Original ROM.

Anyone doing Web design on their Note 10.1?

I have a few projects planned which means I'll be getting into a bit of Web design again.
I was wondering if this tablet / the Android platform has to ability to support web design in any way?
Has anybody tried this with any success?
Obviously the artwork is a given, but I would like to be able to create complete sites and upload content if this is possible?
Thanks

The most I have done on my tablet is keeping Wordpress sites updated... they have a pretty decent app out...
I understand this really isn't "web design" but it is in the realm.. thought I'd share.
Extremely plausible,
I'm a frontend developer/designer mainly working on Mac OS/Ubuntu, but lately I catch up on my mark ups while accompanying my missus on the weekend, she's in the beauty salon, I'm on the waiting bench with a cup of coffee, tablet connected to a usb mouse + bluetooth keyboard. Files are sync on dropbox (I use dropsync instead of dropbox app since it allows me to sync the way desktop app sync) or I simply edit from FTP (or simply offline edit, download my project to my tablet and work it locally)
I use these following apps on android:
- ES File - best free FTP/file browser imho
- Chrome - since we mostly did Chrome apps, this ensure the design rendered well on desktop chrome as well btw chrome android DOES support local file
- Droid Edit - superb editor
- Photo editor for image crop if you must (I prefer pure html/css for creating elements)
I mostly write HTML/PHP. Try it mate! Felt weird at first but somehow writing on Droid Edit mimics the experience I got from writing on Espresso/Sublime Text, well.. minus the code completion of course LOL
Cheers!
Same here.. The notes software thou will not TOUCH True web design software. I to use word press to push updates as well as c/panel app to do domain and email admin stuff on some non profit sites i manage..
I would say quick edits and add pages from page temp-lets and code from copy past or some simple editing while out and about would be great. NOT Full editing.. I Think the same for editing graphics on the note. I have 32 inch monitor and wacom intros on my desktop. Note is awesome BUT FAR FROM setup i have on desktop
I think I'm going to get the Samsung ATIV smart PC Pro (convertible laptop).
Full windows OS and i5 processor, all my windows software installed so this will replace my laptop.
This also has the s-pen and wacom digitiser.
So far I can't think of a better all rounder but I'm open to suggestions?!?
Thanks

I asked me the same question a few weeks ago and after a bit of research I found the answer for me - 10.1.
Its due to the more possibilities on android, less weaker than windows in the area of virusscanners (you always have to install one on windows) and the good portability.
In this Video (
) u can see some other devices like the ativ one. Even the "lag" in paintshop on ativ compared to the price difference in my country, it was less expensive to get a note.
So far, with something like Air Display, iDisplay or S Tablet ( stablet.co.kr ) (which, it seems, will be released soon) you can use the paint-programs on windows or mac with your spen (what i've read) with screen sharing or use ur note as a wacom tab for pc.
But one thing I don't like is the lack of charging/AC while using otg.
I build an otg cable with some extras, so i can use external usb keyboard, mouse, gigabitlan over usb (wifi disabled that time) and some drives and sticks on my 10.1.
With mouse its like working on pc and I can superfast dismount the otg to take the note with me.
Hope there will be a kernel soon or something to use usb power (or ac power) while otg. So far, it's possible through a trick and its not working every time - maybe I'll make a thread with my custom otg cable...
Oh, and the weight. ~600 gramm the note, ~1,7 kg the ativ ? Ough.
good luck.
ps: first thread and... Ich habe das "noob-Video" gesehen bei der Registratur. Und es soll verboten sein, Nicht-Englisch zu reden?

How to enable flick support on Emui 4.0

Has anyone found out how to enable flick properly? For me it works but is buggy and doesn't always open the intended app.
For example I set flick up to open whatsapp but it sometimes opens my messages when I flick up.
I set messages as flick right.
I still need more input on this. Anyone who can contribute or help to make it seamless is very welcome.
How to:
Open the hw_easywakeupmotion_config.xml file in system/etc/xml and find
Code:
<EasyWakeUpMotion name="EasyWakeUp_Flick_Right" support="0" value="0" flag="1" keycode="-1" />
Change it to
Code:
<EasyWakeUpMotion name="EasyWakeUp_Flick_Right" support="1" value="1" flag="1" keycode="134" />
Repeat the process for flick left, flick up and flick down.
Using 135, 136 and 137 as the keycodes.
133,134,135 and 136 also worked for me but -1 didn't.
Also go to system/emui/base/xml and repeat the process.
Save and reboot.
Now go to settings >>smart assistance >>motion control
You will find the flick Option there.
Now set it up as you wish and try if it works

Built-in Trojans vanishing when installing LineageOS?

Hello!
I'm new to this forum as you can see and also dont know much about IT, except that I installed Lineage since years on my phone.
Now my Aquaris X is gone and I need a new phone and I heard that the Xiaomi Redmi product line would be quite good regarding Lineage usage and pricing.
Now when following the news there are permanent new evidence that China phones are loaded with Trojans by default and even if this is not confirmed for a company already it just makes sense that any chinese developer might have all of these inside ...
So my question is:
By replacing a stock ROM with LineageOS will I also get rid of all possible trojans inside of a Chinese Phone or might they be still existing afterwards?
THXXX
Good question. But I think manufacturers can put anything they want into their hardware, so it probably depends.
Btw, why do you "follow" the news? Can't you form your own opinions? You know who owns the news? It's a centralized source and not as individual and separate as they want to appear with their different outlets.
Speaking of built in trojans and "hacking your human OS": you can change a line of code, just like in Xposed. But not with Android phones but humans. Of course it needs a great excuse to install xposed into every human, but that's what the media of the owners is there for. (that's a more persistant trojan.) Watch first 2 minutes of this if you don't understand
Well so it means it cannot be said for sure?
Yeah I know these arguments with media control. But why complain about someone who is afraid of a company from a country which is everything but a democracy? There is no multiple ways of interpreting the policy of China which is the exact opposite of anything where I would like to live. Any reasonable criticism is illegal and results in a ban for marriage or transportation or leaving the country. Any company is intruded by the government and therefore it just makes sense to me that they take any opportunity to use this power that they have over the economy to use it for their own advantage.
So I am living in a quite liberal country in Europe and I dont get arrested for anything I say against my government. Thats quite cool even if I dont use that privilege quite often.
Also I ****ing hate what they do against these Uigur people in Xingiang, sterilizing them against their will or keeping them in prisons just for their religion.
Same as taking the freedom of an athlete who speaks out justice against some high-ranked scum from the government.
Thats just a few examples, but because of this and many other stories I dont really trust these chinese companies. I have Xposed (edit: and Xprivacy Lua) on my Aquaris X but by making this thread I want to understand if it will also protect me against the Chinese Trojans just confirmed by the Lithuanian cyber security etc.
In contrast to so-called Western states China is a central state with 33 administrative units ( without Taiwan ), his political system is a one-party socialist-authoritarian one. You may not like it, but that's the way it is.
I don't think XDA is the right place to discuss whether this suits a user here or not.
BTW: We all know that even in Western states, ethnic minorities are unpopular, persecuted and sometimes exterminated.
*BTW: We all know that even in Western states, ethnic minorities are unpopular, persecuted and sometimes exterminated.*
True but nobody beats the situation in Xingiang (alone writing this word would put me on a blacklist living there) and their suppression of free speech.
*I don't think XDA is the right place to discuss whether this suits a user here or not.*
Ok yo understand, but I just want to know whether replacing a ROM would also eradicate any built-in trojans, thats just a 100 % technical question and I have nothing to do with coding and stuff so I hope to get an answer here, but so far it's not clear.
Does it mean as long as you are not the manufacturer you will never know and hence probably still have any trojans after replacing?
AFAIK Trojans never are part of any pre-installed Android based OS, but exclusively imported to Android OS by user of Android device. That's also TRUE for phones manufactured in China.
BTW: It's easy to find any Trojan on an Android device.
So you mean real Trojans only come on board by wrong user behaviour and cant be part of the system already?
That would be of course good and I have no idea about all of this stuff, it's just that it sounds like many Chinese Phones spy on their user with some default built-in *trojan* - maybe you may call it differently.
Here was a mention of many chinese phones with built in Trojans:
Android: Über 40 China-Smartphones mit Malware ab Werk
Bei über 40 chinesischen Smartphones haben Experten einen vorinstallierten Trojaner gefunden. Welche Geräte betroffen sind, erfahren Sie hier!
www.computerbild.de
Still it is not with Xiaomi ;P
But our German department for Cyber Security (BSI) told that there would be indeed some *additional functions* also in Xiaomi which also pose security / spy issues:

But in the first link on top they say:
"Die einzigen Mittel im Kampf gegen den Trojaner sind die Installation einer „sauberen“ Android-Firmware oder ..."
Which means they say installing a clean Firmware would at least resolve the issue in situation 1. So is Firmware = ROM? So installing LineageOS would then remove these spyware at least in the first link example?
Here I found another example:
How to find and remove malware from some chinese smartphones?
I am planning to buy a chinese smartphone. However, I've read that some come with extensive spyware straight from the factory. Will I be able to detect such malware (Android.Trojan.Uupay.D and the...
android.stackexchange.com
*If you want to be 100% sure that the device is clean, then you must remove the OS that came with it and flash a trusted(opensource) ROM like official CyanogenMod*
So IF the Trojans are only inside of the pre-installed Apps, then I should completely remove them by flashing LineageOS?
My understanding of a Trojan is it's a door-opener for malicious softwares packed in an Android app, it in generally does the following:
Download and install other malware, such as Viruses or Worms.
Use the infected device for click fraud.
Record keystrokes and websites visited.
Send information about the infected device to a malicious hacker including passwords, login details for websites, and browsing history.
Give a malicious hacker control over the infected device.
But I may err, as always ...
Reflashing a ROM OEM-pre-installed by a Custom ROM IMHO is an overkill: simply remove Trojans found.

If you install a custom ROM, your stock operating system(along with any potential trojans that were included in your stock operating system) will be replaced by the custom operating system.
I now bought a Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact for really cheap ... less than 200 € so I guess its fine now.
But when unlocking the Bootloader I get problems.
The Device is listed in *Fastboot Devices* so everything is working correctly, but when I do the unlock command
fastboot oem unlock 0x [... my code]
I just get
FAILED (remote: 'unknown command')
fastboot: error: Command failed
Now I tried the *Sony Flashtool* like in this video:
He has a Button called BLU and just enters IMEI and Unlock Code to unlock the Bootloader. But I dont have this button WTF ?? Just the Flash Icon Button and then the Lock Icon Button.
So any ideas what to do?
