Okay, no idea what's going on with my phone here. Whenever I connect to the internet through any application, HTC weather, Opera, streaming radio, not a problem. It connects without issue. However, sometimes I get this message on my screen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clewis4u91/3737272578/
I have no idea why this comes up. I have no problems connecting! I have automatic weather updates off, Windows Update set to manually check (however it stopped working a month ago anyways), QuickGPS isn't set to automatic either, as well as my email. Something is trying to connect at some point, but isn't able to.
Normally it wouldn't be a big deal for me, however here's why it's bothering me. This has happened TWICE so far in the past week, disconnecting phone calls. This seems to be happening randomly. I was on a phone call, and I didn't hear anyone talking so I looked at the screen, and that message was displayed. The next day, the same thing happened while on a phone call, to a completely different phone number. Soft reset does not solve the issue.
I have done absolutely no changes to my device or it's settings. I can connect to the internet whenever I want, so the connection settings have to be okay? Doing a quick Google search basically showed me that the people getting the same error, were unable to connect altogether, which is not the case for me. I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.
Sorry, I left out some phone information. I'm running on a Bell (CDMA) HTC Touch Diamond on Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 using stock ROM.
Verizon Users Getting Stuck in 1X --- PLEASE READ!
For those of you who have the plaguing problem of your data connection dropping to 1X, I'm trying to spearhead this issue with Verizon and need your help.
Everytime I open a ticket, it get's closed stating that it's a signal issue with a specific location. We all know that this is not the case. I finally have got ahold of a Tech supervisor who gave me all of his contact information so that we could ALL direct our issue to him. He would then get it elevated through the proper channels and then hopfully they can find a fix. It's my hope that we can all email or call him and explain our issue. He was very nice to work with on the phone and said he is dedicated to getting the problem resolved. I think he's looking at this from a global look rather than an isolated one like every other tech I've spoken to.
Here is his contact information:

Please email or call him with your information and make sure to inform him all of the steps that you've tried that have been unsuccessful (new phone, hard reset, etc etc).
I will try and follow up with him later in the week. Msg here if you contacted him. Hopefully we can get this fixed and be left with just an awesome working phone!
I emailed the guy, it happened once a week when I was on the VZN rom.
dezoris, what rom are you using now? does it not get stuck in 1x?
just curious...
I had this problem on stock VZN ROM and still have it on MightyMike ROM...
Sent Kevin a message
I sent him one!
I haven't had my phone 2 months & this is pissing me off!
I have also had a complete loss of data connection period! Grrrrr
After doing the *228 & option 2 to sync with tower. Got WORSE!

I haven't had any problems like that with my Verizon Touch Pro 2, that goes for the stock Verizon ROM and the MightyMike one I'm currently using.
This has happened to me a couple of times. It is VERY annoying. and i KNOW it's not a signal issue. What kind of "debugging" should i do before i email the vzw manager guy? I don't want to send an email without doing a little debugging work. That way i seem like i know what i'm talking about.
PS. i agree, this is probably not an isolated issue.
I work at a large international airport in a metro area. It goes without saying there is a ton of cell capacity in the area.
Yet I continually drop to 1X when on a data connection. I always thought this was just "one of those things" or something to be expected. You are saying it is not but a bug in the product/ software / rom, etc?
Happens to be about once every other day. And I just soft reset and it goes back to normal.... Sucks I know.
Just stumbled on this thread and thought I would comment -- my TP2 is actually on Sprint and not VZW, but I've seen this problem fairly frequently even going back to my old Mogul/Titan, so it seems to be a legacy CDMA issue. I think there are two kinds of problems, though, so I am curious to know more about what people are experiencing.
First, as you know, incoming calls or SMS must drop the phone from EVDO to 1X -- this isn't usually a problem because it should snap right back to EVDO after the 1X packets are done. However, I have seen many occasions where it "sticks" on 1X *as long as the phone is still trying to transfer data* -- such as Exchange push or streaming Internet radio. If the phone keeps trying to access the data connection, it will stay in 1X indefinitely most of the time. If the data connection goes dormant for more than about 20 seconds, it seems to finally revert back to EVDO.
The other circumstance is where it seems to just drop to 1X and stay there, and not even cycling the radio on/off seems to make a difference -- you have to soft reset.
I guess what I am wanting to drill into is how many instances are of the first time and how many are of the second. It did take me a while to realize, for example, that if I got an SMS while listening to streaming radio, the data connection was going to drop to 1X and stay there until I closed the streaming radio app. Similarly, I often get as many as 2-3 emails a minute during peak times of the day (I know, my company needs to take some valium), so the constant Exchange syncs never give the data connection a long enough "break" to get back up to EVDO. The main point is, the first type of problem is more or less a CDMA protocol issue that we're probably stuck with, while the second type seems to be a definite bug with either the radio or the OS.
I notice the issue too, but worse it will go into and endless loop of popups letting me know of the situation and the only way to make them go away is to soft reset. Dismissing the popup just makes it come back again over and over. Calling this a legacy CDMA issue is bull as none of my other phones or Blackberries, even my piece of junk Storm have ever done this. Windows mobile needs to give us a decent radio to fix this. The only Verizon EVDO capable Winmobile device I have had that did not have this problem was the XV6700 so this has to be something to do with more recent devices. It has happened on HTC and Samsung devices, so it can't be manufacturer specific. It is the primary reason I moved most of my lines over to Blackberry. I got my wife one of those new Android phones, 1st the HTC one and when she decided she wanted a keyboard, the Moto one and neither one does this.
1x stuck
Same issues as everyone else here to.
i have found when i go to start/settings/connections and launch the comm manager, do do anything just launch it it corrects the issue.
thats strange but it has worked everytime for me.
Everyone whose having this issue on Verizon. Please please please email Kevin on post #1. Having one person as the sole contact on this issue WILL help get it worked out through Verizon. Kevin was very helpful and is a Tech Support Supervisor. Thanks!
Ok verified work around that works for me I'm on day 4 and im still on a EVDO connection.
1. Com manager
2. Press 3G connection and set your network type to auto.
3. dont press ok.
4. Press the X in the top right corner.
5. Soft reset.
So far this method has "fixed" my issue as of 4 days ago. Previously I would go 1 or 2 days before seeing the issue again.

I can't seem to find "3g Connection" as an option or setting under the com mananger. Am I looking in the wrong place? Which OS/ROM are you running?
I am on stock Verizon WinMo 6.1. Thanks for any help.
Sorry your right. Im running the CDMA energy rom. Yours should be stated as Data connection.
You should really consider upgrading your rom. I held out for a long time and just gave in.
I'm actually on verizon with tp2, Verizon is well aware of this issue(as far as i;m concerned). When I put on a custom rom, it showed up, however I needed to put back the default rom from verizon it went away. I put the energy rom back on and it's back. If verizon knows how to ship phones with that annoyance turned off can't we get a fix for the popups?
That pop up is most annoying!

Posible fix for stuck in 1x!
I'm going to go out on a limb here.
I posted in a coupl eother places and got no response on this which was original phone settings before I flashed
Same normal Phone settings for #777
BUT, the other read as follows:
VZWEmbedded
Log on: emsgsm.vzw3g.com
Pass: vzw (I tried our regular password & it worked)
In networking don't select on setup ie just your #777, set it to auto.
Here's my point:
No longer receiving multiple popups for: your device is registering on a voice line
More bars Show up now
Stay in 3g longer and now the phone calls up 3g for when data needs processing and data connection goes live as it should at this point.
Was using engery rom's nov 9 stable, worked with this switch
Now using Energys 6.5.3 28002 rom & working even better.
Running the same radio that came with phone version 1.88.
While i will drop periodically to 1x it does recover on it's own and isn't staying stuck.
Don't want to even look at 1x, update weather lol it works. So I am not to sure it's a hardware issue per say (maybe both who knows) since I have gotten rid of my popups. I'm not a programmer but sounds like a programming issue since it needs the 2nd set of connection strings.
What won't fix the issue is if you are in a bad area with very poor reception. I'm in the middle of a oak grove forest at the bottom of a hill and this is working for me.
Make sure you keep the 3g push in setting on and set to auto
Give ity a try!
Any thoughts on this?
oK AFTER much confusion on ppcgeeks, I need to calrify a few things.
This is a 2nd connection that you need to add.
The GSM is data, normally phone operates in cdma but it is making use of the gsm when over seas for email. It also uses gsm locally for data.
Since adding the 2nd connection all popups are gone. data connections are better on new rom then on stock rom.
If you've made use of JMZ Provisioing you already have the 1st connection under My ISP. Just add the 2nd as noted above and under select network make sure it is set to auto. This allows verizon to switch as needed.
This has been happening to me for about the past 2 weeks. I just e-mailed Kevin. I plan to take it to our on campus Verizon store next week.
I am running a stock ROM with SPB Powershell 3.5 on top of it. EVDO comes can goes. Usually once I try to use an app that requires data (Pocketwit, Opera or even ActiveSync) it drops me to 1X and never connects. I have also gotten several PPP (error code 11) errors. Before this time, the phone had been rock solid with EVDO.
Now my ActiveSync wont even work when I am at home. It only works at work due to being plugged in via USB.
Hope Kevin can help us get to the bottom of it.
I was stuck in 1X for the last few days. My problem was resolved by dialing *228 and pressing '1' to program.
I use Gtalk a lot and I've noticed that when I leave my phone on standby for more than a few min, my GTalk gets disconnected and then trys to re-connect. I know this happens quite a lot because I get e-mails every now and again from the conversation from the other person because GTalk is disconnected on my end. I'm mobile coverage(2G/3G/4G) whenever this happens and never on Wi-Fi. I'm thinking it's maybe associated with the data disconnects that people are talking about? I do see that in the cell standby, Time without a signal is greater than 0%, meaning it does drop it. Anyone experiencing the same issue?
yeah Im getting the same issues but i was getting the same problem on my G1
I noticed this at work today. Kinda glad to know I'm not alone on this. I use talk to message my ol lady while I'm at work to save texts. I noticed every time I picked my phone up I had to reconnect.
I installed the app "No signal alert" and just sitting at my desk it's been dropping connections constantly as opposed to the N1 where when I changed my sim card to that, it hasn't dropped once in the same spot. Hoping there's a software update that can take care of this. I hope it's not hardware related, this is my 2nd unit already
I have the same poor connection problem. It really sucks compared to my previous phones and my brother's G2. I wanted to exchange it but it looks like it is happening to everyone..
has there been a fix for this because I never faced this issue but now I have started facing the issue.... this doesnt happen on the edge network but this happens on wifi and that too whenever the phone goes in a deep sleep mode. I can say that the wifi is active because when this happens i can browse and my other online stuff is happenning. the gtalk disconnects and cause of that I dont get emails too of gmail. it seems the google account services are the ones which disconnect on sleep
Has anyone experienced any issues with missed calls (no notifications) or delayed text messages with their Nexus 5?
I've had the phone since 5 November and it seems when the phone goes into deep sleep the only notifications I can consistently get are ones that are data based (Gmail, email, hangout chat, etc.). At first I thought it only happened while I was on WiFi, but I tested this out by turning off WiFi and using only LTE and then only 3G, but the issue remained.
I've noticed with SMS and voicemails that once I unlock the screen and make a call or send a text I'll receive a deluge of notifications and messages at once, and I've been told that phone calls ring twice as if my phone is off but I never see any notification of a missed call unless there is a voicemail (again, like SMS, doesn't show up until I unlock and use my phone). It feels like the phone drops the connection with a cell tower while in deep sleep or something.
The short list of troubleshooting I've tried is turning off WiFi battery optimization, toggling between LTE to 3G only, and a factory reset. I haven't loaded the stock image from Google yet. I use Textra as my default messaging app, but the messages come in fine when I'm active on the device so I don't believe it's app related. Same goes for phone calls; everything is fine as long as the phone is relatively active.
I saw on the Google support forums that people have reported issues with the WiFi turning off when in deep sleep; at least they are unable to ping the device after a while so I wonder if could have something to do with battery saving optimizations in KitKat.
Anyone have similar issues, or ideas on what I could do to try to fix it?
---EDIT: 2013-12-09---
Here are some links to the Google Product Forum threads that this issue is being talked about.

The first one is the most recent thread, but I'd suggest that anyone that is experiencing the problem and comes across this XDA thread go post in both of the Google Forums to show Google how many are really having this issue. So far nobody from Google has acknowledged there being problem.
I have that same issue, also on TMO. It seems like the phone forgets it's connected to a cell network until you remind it. However, I noticed it first on my HTC one when I installed the stock 4.3 update.
I called TMO support and they reset my line or something. It *seemed* to fix the problem, but I'm not entirely sure because I got my N5 very shortly thereafter. I'm now experiencing the same issue on my N5.
Of particular note is that it always happens in the evening. Even if I toggle airplane mode around 6pm, by 8pm I'll have missed texts. I've just started periodically calling my voicemail to reestablish cell connection.

Airplane mode turns off everything and you will not receive anything until it is back on. Only wifi works.

Hmm, I'll give T-Mobile a call then and see what they have to say as well. I'm glad I'm not the only one, but it sure is a pain in the ass to have to micro-manage the actual phone aspect of a smartphone, heh.

I think he meant that he toggles Airplane mode on and off in order to try and re-establish the connection to the cell tower; not that he's expecting messages while Airplane mode is on.
Just to update anyone that comes across this thread, I flashed the stock 4.4 images and still have the delayed texts and missed calls after the phone goes into deep sleep. I currently have a conversation with a Google support tech, but I'm not encouraged by their suggestions at this point.
This just happened to me as well, I'm on Vodafone Romania. I only have the N5 since yesterday, and it's on 3G only, wifi always on. Wifi connects fine, today I actualy got an email from a friend who's been trying to call me unsuccesfuly for 1 hour. I just hope this is sw related, as the warranty is not valid in Romania

I just got my n5 yesterday.
I'm in Toronto, Canada on Fido network and twice in 24 hrs I have had the cell network not available, displaying message " emergency calls only."
If I restart the phone it will see the network a minute after it restarts.
What's up with that?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I experienced this problem on every single android phone I've ever had. I dont think its a carrier problem. I think its a OS problem. I've used T-Mobile, AT&T, Straight Talk and Sprint. All of my phones have done it. HTC Evo, evo3d, galaxy s2 epic 4g touch, nexus4 and nexus5.
To me it seems like it happens more often with games. I may be playing a game of Navy Wars (a battleship game) or words with friends. I pick my phone up to do something and as soon as I turn it on I get a notification saying its my turn when actuality my opponent made their move a long time ago. Its also an issue with IM apps like hangouts and whatsapp.
happens on carrier data and wifi.
If anyone has a fix for it I'd love to know what it is.
I have exactly the same issue with my N5 sometimes i get massages 5 or 6 h after they sent. And some missed calls. It never happened to me on my N4 so i believe its phone issue.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I do believe this is a software/OS problem as well, but I find it strange that I couldn't find more about it on Google's support forums or even more threads about it on XDA.
I wanted to update everybody and let them know that Google support put in an RMA for my phone in order to try to resolve the issue. I explained to the support tech that I tried resetting the phone to defaults and reloading the latest images that were posted (KRT16M) and could still produce the same issue without fail; I even took a video with my Galaxy Nexus and sent it to them.
And I gave up on being connected to WiFi all the time. Once I connect to WiFi and let the phone go idle all the issues begin, and then I'll have the problem on 3G/LTE when I turn off WiFi. Rebooting with WiFi off will get me back to normal, but this is obviously very inconvenient and putting a serious cramp in my monthly data usage.
I have absolutely 0 confidence that this is a hardware issue, but at this point I'll try anything so my fingers are crossed that the RMA/new device does the trick since it seems such a small percentage of people seem to be talking about this particular issue.
I'll post an update once I get the new phone and test.
I just wanted to chime in and say I've got the Nexus 5 on Tmo's $30 plan and I haven't experienced this at all. All my calls come through exactly as they should...maybe it is a hardware issue or even a Tmo issue.
I had this problem on Sprint. On one of the Sprint forums (S4GRU), I was told about a Sprint LTE issue. You can read more if you want, but net-net, the recommendation was to switch to 3g in areas where the LTE issue is occurring. Yes, it is a pain in the rear, but it seems to help me at least get the calls that I need. (data is available for me over wifi at this location).
Again, this is specific to Sprint, and only in some impacted areas.
(I did have Google send me a replacement phone - that didn't solve this issue)
There is 2 posts about the same issue on google forum
i can't post link i am to fresh on this forum
but google "Nexus 5 Hangouts SMS messages are delayed" 1st on top
and "Unreliable texting" 2nd
If this is the problem with software why it started like few days ago before everything worked fine
---------- Post added at 10:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:50 PM ----------
Another post on androidcentral
google "Google Nexus 5 - Missed Calls, Anyone Else?"
And i am with T-Mobile by the way
I have zero issues on my N5 with Tmo, texts and calls come through right away. I've had many Android phones and have never had any issues.
Are you guys running any apps like Greenify or anything that is preventing the radio from waking the phone properly>
Having the same issue on different carriers with the same OS where all that they have in common is a Google account, I can see one app having an ill effect on the basic phone functionality.
Sprint does have a known delay with incoming calls, it's a CDMA thing they enable on their end, but it usually only adds a couple of seconds delay.
It happens to me and when it does I realize that the phone is locked onto LTE, when a call comes in it is supposed to switch to 1x. The fall back switching on the phone's software is probably the issue on Sprint.
having the same issues. had to reinsert the sim card. tmobile.
I turned off wifi and restart the phone two days ago so far no problem just not using wifi. Hope google will fix it soon
Did any one report it to google already ??
I had an issue with sms not sending until I would reboot phone. I was only able to fix by getting a new sim card. No issues since.
For the people with issues, are you using a lte compatible sim card, and have you tried resetting the device and using it without any 3rd party apps installed (absolutely none)?

Hi all,
I suppose I'm looking for advice on diagnosing the source of my problem, more than asking you to identify the problem specifically.
I'm running CM-11 with the latest nightly. (There's not much point in my pulling up the specific version number, as this problem has been persistent throughout many Nightly and Stable deployments.)
After a reboot, my phone will behave normally for a while, then start behaving very badly. In the past two hours, I've lost 70% of my battery life, while my phone was sitting next to me idle. The phone is very warm to the touch. I have no idea what it's been thinking about.
(This is with LTE off, Wifi on and connected, and a very 3G strong signal because I have a Sprint Airave sitting ten feet away from me. I also have Bluetooth turned on and paired to a laptop, though it isn't doing anything at the moment.)
Often when I receive an incoming call, the phone will ring, but will have so much lag, that the call drops to voicemail before the PQ gets around to displaying the incoming call dialogue and Answer button.
Similarly, when I finish a call, and take the phone away from my head, the screen often won't wake up, thus making it impossible to hang up the call.
Chrome has been crashing. So have various android processes. Maps (Navigation) has been crashing intermittently, which is frustrating when I've missed a turn because I was driving and waiting to hear the next voice direction.
I'm also having trouble keeping my external SD card mounted. I'll occasionally open my podcasting app (DogCatcher) only to be told that it doesn't have any podcasts to play. When I open ES File Explorer, I find that my external storage is unavailable. There's no error indicating that it was unmounted; it's simply not there. Manually ejecting the card and re-inserting causes it to mount, and work fine for a few days, until I discover it missing again.
(Dogcatcher is set to only download episodes when connected to power and wifi.)
This is getting frustrating. (As all of my Android devices eventually become) and I need help figuring out what my phone is hung up on at any given time. Is there a reliable Task Manager/Resource Monitor style app that I should be using? Anything else I can do?
Sorry for the long post; I've been putting up with it for a while hoping that the next CM-11 release will somehow solve the problem.
Thanks for your help.
Have you tried a clean flash lately?
Have you checked which app is keeping your phone awake? WakeLockDetector is a great app to check to see what is killing your battery. Obviously the built-in battery graph tool can be useful as well, but doesn't necessarily show you what is the cause.

It HAS been a while since I've done a clean flash. I'd be happy to try that, but I'd rather figure out if a specific app is causing the problem, so I know not to install it again. I hadn't heard about WakeLockDetector; that sounds like a great start. Thanks.
