Stupid question... I'm sure. I bought a new HTC One X from AT&T a few days ago and it should be here this week. I assume that most of these devices were built and stocked for some amount of time. Making that assumption leads me to believe it will have an older firmware installed on it. Does anyone have evidence that this is not the case? Anyone buy one recently and it was loaded with 2.20 or newer?
There have been some threads recently that people are still able to get a model with 1.85 installed. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the older firmware, but at this point it depends on how lucky you are.
If you ordered from AT&T directly, or from Amazon wireless, you're almost 100% sure to get a new one. If you bought it from a retailer that had some extra stock, you may still be able to get one with 1.85.

Crap... bought directly from AT&T, but they were able to ship it same day (which I found quite odd) so I hope that it's older stock. We shall see... man I hope a root option comes out for 2.20. Only if I had the time to learn how to figure that stuff out myself!

But you might get lucky and get an 1.85 only time will tell
I just got a refurbished one (yesterday) with a date sticker of 8/9/12 and it came with 1.85. I went through warranty exchange, I had a GS II and received three replacements that arrived broken, so they gave me a One X. Already trolling online classifieds for someone to swap for a GS III (without me adding $).

I got all sports of errors setting up Google Voice. Same on my Aria. Just power through and apply anyway (it gave me that option) and manually change your call forward number. You can get the forward number from Google Voice, it will be the same area code as your own number, vs a generic number everyone uses.

Did you just upgrade your phone and keep your existing plan? I was considering returning mine to AT&T and possibly buying it elsewhere linked to AT&T but I need to keep my unlimited plan (for obvious reasons).
EDIT: I just called them up and the woman I spoke to was nice enough to look into it. The phones they have in stock right now all have the newer firmware (based on their order date).

If you have a Best Buy Mobile store check with them, I bought mine there and that had plenty of 1.85 on shelf. Worth a try

Nope, I'm in the same situation. I'm thinking about checking out Best Buy after work today to see if they have any 1.85 on the shelf and if they do, I will return my 2.20. Thank goodness for 30 day returns!
Thank God I like what it's running, so did att lock it or htc, I was under the impression that htc was allowing it for all the phones now, what happened?

It's been my experience that customer care generally doesn't have a clue. For example, they were telling people some of the galaxies came with fm radio hardware when they weren't. They had no idea whether my phone was just 4g or 4g LTE, they couldn't even give my any support when I was having problems with the AT&T MADE APP "At&t messages"....So...yeah, if it's not int he scripts, doesn't involve rebooting your phone or checking your IMEI, pulling the battery, or just replacing your phone...they're clueless...just saying...

Right on. I basically returned my 2.20 HOX yesterday and had to tell them that I was having battery issues so they wouldn't charge me the $35 restocking fee. I asked if they had old stock available and of course they didn't. However, retail outlets seem to have plenty of old stock around so I was able to take my business elsewhere. The people at the particular AT&T store I was at didn't question firmware comments. However, the guys at Fry's were very familiar with what I was looking for and were nice enough to open boxes, charge phones, and check firmware for me. Got to love fellow geeks
I got my warranty replacement today and how can I check my firmware version?
I have an at&t note edge. Running stock kitkat 4.4.4. I see the at&t note 4 has been getting the lollipop update. But nothing for the note edge. I read that the note edge might not get the update. Ive been waiting for a long time now. If I want to put lollipop on my phone myself what should or could I do? Can I root the phone then maybe flash a rom on to it?
Due to the Bootloader been locked by AT&T I don't see a root coming any time soon for our Note Edge.
I'm still loving the edge as is, but if it was rootable, I'd love it even more.

The reason I find it unlikely, from a development standpoint, is because they are virtually the exact same hardware the only major difference being the edge screen, obviously, which would just require a bit of tweaking of the edge screen apps which is already done by Samsung...
Let's also remember the edge came out a month later give at&t time and they will push out lollipop for the edge.
Guess what? I just checked again today for an update. Says it's ready to download! I'll have to go find a WiFi hot spot.

Woohooo! Awesome! Mine is downloading now.
Mine is downloading very slow download though.
I was gonna make a new thread but I might as well just reply here. I just bought a new unlocked Note Edge but I'm still stuck on 4.4.4. It keeps saying that my phone is up to date even though that's clearly not true. Shouldn't an unlocked phone get it before all the carrier versions? Not to mention, I am in Australia which from what I read should've been the first place to get the update. Any thoughts?
Being in Australia I'd say you should have. I unlocked my phone a few days ago on kitkat 4.4.4. Then today updated to the new lollipop. The update came out yesterday here from at&t. I'm on AT&T in the usa. I have been testing t mobile with it. But so far not impressed with the service area range of t mobile. Maybe it's your service provider?

Yeah could be but as I mentioned, I bought an unlocked Note Edge and I'm just using a pre-paid SIM card right now so I'm not tied to any carriers. I was always under the impression that unlocked phones don't need to wait for carriers to release updates?
I have never heard of an unlocked phone getting updated before a locked phone on the same network. From what little I know, it being unlocked just allows you to use your phone on other carriers/networks.

So you mean if I put a SIM card in now from a carrier that has already pushed the update out then I should be able to update it? I guess I always thought that unlocked phones would get the update through the phone manufacturer (so in this case, Samsung) instead of waiting for the carrier's approval.

Thanks a lot for the info! Well I just went there and downloaded Kies3 (I'm totally new to Samsung) but it doesn't seem to think that my phone needs to be updated (there's no notifications under Firmware information). My current firmware version is N915GXXU1ANK4. The closest model number I could find was the GALAXY Note Edge (SM-N915G) and the newest firmware for my country/carrier (Australia, no carrier) is the 5.0.1 released on 17.02.2015. Could you please take a look and see if that is in indeed the one I need to download without fear of bricking my phone? Thanks a lot!

It should be Australian most firmware on Sam mobile tell you what country the firmware is from. Some have multi csc so it can be used in another country, if it has multi csc just get glue service providers apn and enter it for internet to work properly.
Ran the Samsung/Verizon updater that pops up when you plug phone into computer.
Got an upgrade that inabled the Samsung Pay app and run time, I installed days ago.
Every thing went through but ended with my cards not accepted yet.
Chase is not on the list.
I am on the T-mobile network but it didn't work in till the update.
The update is labled OG7 that's what I had, I think. It took longer to download than update. Not like a full Rom.
The latest OG7 firmware was just a monthly security patch update. Had nothing to do with Samsung Pay. http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/android-generic-security-patch-su.pdf
My card activation is still pending so they must be blocking that part still some how. I did get the email from B of A that the virtual card was added but app still shows pending (been almost 2 days now).
How are you guys even getting the Samsung Pay app on your phone? I am on BOG7 as well, but don't have the app.
Side note: been using Samsung Pay on my Note 5 on T-Mobile for a while now and it's awesome Hope my Verizon phone gets it soon!

Until you get the official update from Verizon, it is unlikely to work correctly. Let's hope Verizon pushes it soon.
Also for those of you have ever rooted your phone or are thinking of rooting, once you do so Samsung Pay will never work on your phone.

Good question. My guess is yes. Only because it is Samsung
My guess is yuuuuup even Samsung decided to switch from an exynos to a snapdragon processor for Canadian users.

bootloader will be UNlocked if purchased from online store or brick and mortar store (Samsung Customer Support Agent specifically mentioned Best Buy)

Screenshot of chat with Samsung CS yesterday
ETA: me too. and it looks like the only way to cancel an order with Sprint is to simply not sign for it when delivered, although I'm going to call later this morning and see if that gets me anywhere.
Called to cancel order through Sprint, and basically got nowhere. Have to wait for it to show up from UPS, then take to my local Sprint store for return/refund. Going to Best Buy and purchase there with new 2 year agreement. $500 difference in price. Freebie of the sd card or Fit watch isn't as important now since price would be substantially less. If available still, I'll stick with getting the Fit like I planned.
If you're thinking about doing the same thing, Sprint rep told me to NOT OPEN THE BOX when delivered from UPS as that will require a $35 restocking fee. Just sign for it, then take it to the Sprint store by my house and the store will be able to do refund right then and there. We'll see...
International variants appear to have root capability (i.e. unlocked bootloader) already, just looking around on the web. Hopefully Sprint retail versions will be just as easy.

I find this a little hard to believe (I usually take what reps say with a grain of salt)
Regardless of who's selling it, don't all Sprint phones originate from the same place? So they can get all their bloatware (and locked bootloader, if it is?) on there? Do the Sprint phones from Best Buy not have all of the bloatware?
I guess we'll know soon enough.

And after looking at the Best Buy page for the N7, the "unlocked" spec is labeled as "No". Maybe Samsung makes more money if sold from retailers as opposed to carriers??? I have no idea. Another reason why I'm cancelling my order, regardless at this point. Or maybe sit on it and see if anything develops once they start getting in dev's hands for a week. After waiting 4 years for an upgrade, what's another few weeks to wait and see what's really happening. Seems Samsung and/or Sprint is moving to locking down the phones for good now, or as much as possible.

My guess is by Thursday or Friday night at the latest, we will know everything about what's locked and what's not.
Probably have the first reports of a brick from someone trying to root also... lol
I find it hard to believe that a best buy sprint n7 would be any different than one directly from sprint. I would imagine they are all shipped from the same place with the same setups.

Respectful posts please. Also, finding out and working towards root methods and unlocking bootloaders are at the core of Development. Thank you, and appreciate your comments which add nothing to the discussion.
Honestly as long as we get a viable root and unroot method i will be happy. I can live without having custom roms.

I think that is bs. I don't see the difference from a best buy Sprint Note 7 and one that is directly bought from Sprint. I'm almost certain that either one will be locked.
Also the s7 edge got root but no working recovery. So at some point we might get the same.
On the other hand the exynos versions of the Note 7 have a wip root and recovery.
It will be locked. Don't get your hopes up. Not going to be any different than the s7.
Silly question I presume but does locked bootloader mean we could obtain root but no custom recovery?

The way the s7 got root was from a leaked engineer firmware so if the bootloader is locked than well have to wait for someone to get their hands on the engineer bootloader or find another way to get root

Just like zune mentioned its going to be a wait for us to get something concrete as far as boot loaders but we might have root a little earlier at least you can use rooted apps IE titanium backup with a locked boot loader is a plus. although if your a flash junky like myself it would have been great to get an unlocked boot loader for recoveries backups and new roms but only time will tell there are some of the greatest Devs here on XDA so you never know...

If the hardware is the same as the rest of the major carriers, like the S7 versions are, then flashing the firmware of other carriers will work if that's what you're going for. No idea if this will work as of yet but by the end of the week I'm sure we'll all know the answer to that. But by the sounds of it, you will need to get your phone carrier unlocked before doing that.
