Virgin Mobile S5 constantly freezing and restarting after system update. - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife's phone is a virgin mobile s5. It was only about 3 months old.
It was already on 5.0 when she purchased it.
After doing a system update, my wife's phone became unstable.
Phone will randomly freeze or sometimes makes a crackling sound
then restarts.
Any of this didn't happen at all before the update.
Any help would be appreciated

You should probably download and odin the full factory tar.
OTA updates sometimes cause problems with existing loads.

I'm sorry? I didn't quite get that.
The only part I understood is downloading odin, which I already have. I don't want to ruin my wife's phone warranty.
Nevertheless, we already sent the device to Samsung to get it checked...

You could have downloaded the factory image and reflashed the phone. Hopefully they will do it for you. I'm sure that support with vm is probably pretty limited anyway.

Just got the phone back from samsung service center, they didn't even manage to fix it. Wtf

[Q] More 4.3 Woes

I got the 4.3 OTA update on 12.26.13, and was obviously excited. Sadly, whenever I remove the device from a charger and turn the screen off (not exactly a rare combination), the device will vibrate twice and reboot.
Things I've tried:
- Swapping out the battery
- Rebooting into safe mode
- Wiping Dalvik cache
- Factory data reset
- Factory data reset again
I spoke to Verizon, and they were of no use. They transferred me to Samsung, who said that my device is out of warranty, therefore I would have to pay for a repair. Really? From a software update while sitting on the nightstand? My argument fell on deaf ears.
I've already told them to eff off, and if I'm going to have to pay out of pocket to buy a new phone, I'm getting a N5 and going to ATT. Well, that's present tense now. Anyway, I'd love to fix the device to have it as a spare wifi device while traveling or to sell. Thoughts?
Plug it into the PC and run the installer that pops up. It will reload the 4.3 update and repair any issues.

Hi Chatham7, were you rooted or 100% stock before taking the update? Did you have a custom rom or recovery before the update?

What installer? I've never seen one before. I have it in USB debugging right now, as I rooted it yesterday in attempt to try to resolve the issue.

100% stock with no modifications before the update.
If you prefer odin you can get the official tar now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2586319
Thanks, guys. I was able to re-install the update after some massaging of drivers and various other annoying hardware tweaks. However, it hasn't resolved the issue. My initial thought was that it was a hardware issue, but a hardware issue the very second after getting the 4.3 update? Just too coincidental for me.

It has to be hardware if you're 100% stock, your phone just isn't playing nice with the new update.

Agreed, sorry I wasn't being clear. I meant that it couldn't be a device issue caused by me (as Samsung and Verizon are implying), but rather a hardware compatibility with the new update. Their knee-jerk solution to everything is to use warranty and insurance. I'm not buying insurance to protect myself against them sending me software updates that will ruin my device. That's like paying protection money to the mob so that you don't get robbed.

Random reboots

Hi guys, I got my G920i from an ebay seller that everyone here has been talking about. The phone was in great condition and everything was fine with the phone for the first 24 hours. Ever since then , my phone has been constantly rebooting after a few hours on it's own. I have not installed any apps that I normally don't have on my other android device , the oneplus one. The G920I is not rooted or anything. The only app I can think of , that is different this time from the OPO , is the samsung push service update. I checked around and could not see anyone else who had recvd the Push service update and was facing the same issue.
Please help!

I have the same issue. I also bought the international version off of eBay. I didn't notice anything for about two days, but have now had the phone restart on me three times. All three times I was not actively using the phone and the screen was off.
One thing that I tried was to reinstall the Samsung push service update. That worked for 3 days as I didn't see any more reboots. And just 15 mins ago it happened again while the phone was in my pocket. Hope this gets fixed soon.
It has happened to me twice. I just disabled the auto update feature for my apps to see if that actually works. Will let you know if it worked after a couple of days.
I've had the phone since last tuesday and didnt notice any random reboots until this app updated and now i have 3-5 a day

Im only around open networks at work and it does the soft reboots around my house which is secured
My random reboots started shortly after the Samsung Push Services app was updated. I force stopped it, disabled it and uninstalled the update and I haven't had a reboot in a while.
My phone was rebooting several times every day before that.
Edit: The random reboots are back. This is very frustrating.
reflash the firmware fix the problem for me. No reboot since 24 hours. 5 to 6 reboots per day before. Hope it will continue.
I also have the same issue. It has happened 2 times for me, today and yesterday. I had the phone in my hand and suddenly I see the Samsung logo. Within 5 minutes it reboots 2-3 times. This sucks =(
I have the same problem, it only happens to me when I open Play Store or when I update something.
Edit: I have the F model.
I have had my 920i for almost a week, and I haven't had any random reboot at all. Everything works as supposed to.

I bought my 920i from Breed on Ebay. Everything has been great for the most part, but I do experience a random reboot at least once every few days. It just happened to me while sitting on my desk.
I am rooted, but I don't have any crazy customizations and I applied stock recovery after root. Only one app is frozen and it's that Samsung Security Agent process that was draining my battery. I also have it connected to a Gear S, but I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
I wiped it twice yesterday and then set it up. It's definitely not a ROM/cache issue. I'll be interested to see if anyone figures out what this is. It could just be a bug that we'll have to deal with until the next update. Fortunately, the phone restarts super fast.
I also believe this is a software issue. I am not rooted and don't see myself doing that any time soon.
Which network are you using on your 920i? I am on AT&T network

AT&T here, also.
I'm using the G920F with an european carrier, so I think that is a global problem.
It happened to me twice today. That's a first. The only thing that's different is that I have a Gear S connected full time.
Didn't Android 5.01 cause the phone to reboot after some time due to running out of available memory?

Running totally stock on 5.1.1 (N920PVPU2A0I6). Starting about an hour ago I'm getting a pop-up saying "Bootstrap Failed...".
Phone is unresponsive and reboots by itself.

*EDIT: Factory reset didn't solve it.....correction, 3rd attempt at factory reset seems to have solved it. But I would love to know what initially caused the situation.

The only thing that updated/changed this morning was an update (I believe) for Sprint Zone.

Update....phone has been stable (no re-boots, lock-ups, etc.) for the past few days. I occasionally get the pop-up message stating, "bootstrap failed..." but it doesn't seem to impact the performance of the phone from what I can tell.

My phone just started doing this today. Also a Sprint Note 5. No software updates installed recently... most recent was the Sprint and Samsung updates for Samsung Pay, which I did set up-- but I did that day 1. Right before the problem started happening, the phone rebooted itself, and it hasn't been well since. I checked aLogcat, but nothing gets logged there. After a few of the "Bootstrap failed..." toasts, the phone just becomes unresponsive and I have to hard shutdown. The only thing that I can think of that I've done differently today was plug my phone into my laptop to charge it earlier. I don't think I'd ever plugged it into my laptop before.
Hopefully somebody can pin down the cause of the problem here. I'm surprised that aLogcat doesn't show anything, which makes me wonder if it's some Knox issue...

Same problem, I have stock Sprint Note 5 with Samsung Pay updated and activated. Worked fine for a few days then all of the sudden I started getting "Bootstrap Failed" and my phone is unresponsive and/or data connection stops functioning forcing me to restart.
Is Sprint/Samsung aware of this issue and working on a fix? Very annoying. I've uninstalled all updates to Sprint Zone, force stopped and cleared data for Sprint Zone which appeared to help for a couple days, but now it's back again.
Has anyone had any luck with hard / factory reset? I don't want to go through the hassle of backing everything up, wiping it clean and reinstalling everything if at the end of the day it doesn't make a difference.
After a few more lock ups and reboots yesterday, my phone started behaving normally again, but just now I saw another "Bootstrap failed..." toast, so clearly the problem has not gone away. It hasn't locked up again on me yet, so maybe I'll be okay for a while. The only references I've seen to this error have all pointed to the Sprint Note 5, and most have mentioned Samsung Pay, so I suspect it's an issue there. Whether or not Samsung/Sprint are aware of it, I don't know.
I've also read it may or may not have something to do with Sprint Zone. I would agree it's purely due to the recent Samsung Pay update as I've had the Note since launch day and only noticed this after activating and updating Samsung Pay late last week. Before that I used the phone for nearly a month with no issues whatsoever.
While my phone hasn't locked up or rebooted by itself, I still get the "bootstrap failed..." occasionally.
I too think it was associated with the Sprint Zone and/or Samsung Pay update.
late,
Coz
I have only seen it once. Im fully stock to latest update. It happened to me after i noticed i had no data connection showed full lte but i had nothing opened up sprint zone and tried to refresh showed error. Then bootsrtap failed, have not seen it since

Bootstrap failed
It started happening to me after my fingerprint recognition failed, and I could not remember my backup password.
Just started happening to me a few days ago. completely stock sprint phone with the latest update (samsung pay). I noticed that right after the message PRL update began. After that and updating the profile, i havent seen the message.
Any updates on this? I went into Best Buy this weekend and had Samsung Experience store re-flash the OS to the phone, uninstalled Sprint Zone, uninstalled Samsung Pay updates, and force stopped Samsung Pay Framework. It worked fine for a few days but it started showing "Bootstrap failed" again. While it doesn't freeze up like it did the first time I received that message, in general the connectivity seems spotty (I'll show I'm connected to Wifi but nothing shows up on web browser or apps).
The problem is when Samsung Pay installed, it also installed an update to Android, and the Samsung Experience store in Best Buy can only flash the latest version of the OS. They can't revert back to the stock version of Android that came with the phone.
That's the biggest problem. Samsung and Google should make it so that they can revert back to a prior version of Android if the latest version has major bugs in it (which has been increasingly the case since Lollipop began rolling out). I had ZERO problems with the stock software/firmware that came with the device out of the box. Lesson learned I guess, don't accept an update if the version you have works well, until at least a couple months of the new update being out in the wild first....
Haven't seen this notice in a few days. It stopped after manual prl and profile update.
On a side note, I disabled the Samsung pay via package disable pro
Anyone figure this out?

Desperate for help

Hey guys!
I have posted before but since then the issue has exacerbated to the point where I'm at my wit's end.
I have the SM-P907A AT&T version of this tablet. I bought it second hand and started experiencing issues almost immediately, although nothing as bad as what I'm going through now.
It began with the odd blue-screen and very rare restart. It quickly escalated when I created multiple profiles (user ids). The restarts would happen entirely randomly but without fail within 10 minutes of operation no matter what I did. Oddly enough, it would NEVER restart when connected to a power supply, though I have drawn very little from that.
Thusly, I factory reset my tablet and hoped that would fix the issue; to no avail. Then I decided to Odin flash the stock ROM. Again no joy. Restarts were persistent and regular when the tablet wasn't connected to a power supply. I then rooted the tablet, installed Titanium Backup Pro and proceeded to freeze all apps/odex-es related to Samsung Knox. As some have posted, doing this helped them out. Not lucky enough, I guess.
My questions:
Did my setting up multiple users somehow mess with the tablet in such a deep and integrated way that even factory resetting, re-flashing stock would not help? Is that even possible? My firmware version is P907AUCU1AND7. I'm going to manually update to Lollipop but if my meddling with the multiple users "broke" something essential, will that help?
No, proppably not

I don't think that using the multi user functionality has anything to do with the issues you are experiencing. I have 3 user on my tablet and using it for a year now. Both on KitKat and Lollipop that I am using now. Both rooted, KitKat with Xposed also. Never had issues with blue screens and reboots.
Issues with US devices have been posted regularly and explanations have been posted. Don't focus on multiuser for the issues you experience.
I' am using the SM-P905 International version (EUR)
PDA: P905XXUABOG1
CSC: P905EURABOG1
Ridiculous
Okay guys. Seriously ridiculous. I downloaded the lollipop ROM but got an error when adb sideloading it because it requires the previous firmware P907AUCU1ANK2 for it to update properly whereas I have the one older than that: P907AUCU1AND7.
Can someone help a brotha out? Post a link from where I can download it?! Maybe share their stock rom file?! Pretty please? I've managed to find only TWO results on google. One is a mobilefileserver result requiring that I Pay $60. The other is a Chinese site requiring that I pay significantly less but in a way which is baffling me at the moment.
Any good guy out there who can help??????

Random restart is the problem of cracked battery connector. Re solder the battery connector will fix it permanently.
Read the thread " Flickering Screen " in Galaxy Note or Tab Pro, you will see they all have similar problem like yours and the fix is simple.
No software or upgrade will fix the hardware problem, regardless Kitkat or Lollipop.

Galaxy Note Edge AT&T (SM-N915A) Issues/Crashing/Bootloop After 5.1.1 OTA Update

Ever since updating to 5.1.1 via OTA update on my AT&T Galaxy Note Edge SM-N915A, I have had numerous issues. The phone lags/freezes often at best, but also crashes and reboots randomly. Worse yet, it has gotten into a boot loop a few times. I have factory reset and cache-wiped numerous times and even flashed a clean 5.1.1 via odin and still have the same issues. Apparently 5.0.1 or 4.4.4 cannot be flashed via Odin once 5.1.1 is installed and I can confirm this is true as I have tried.
Is anyone else having these issues? I have seen similar reports from the Note 4 forums but they seem to be getting new firmware updates to fix the issues. My firmware is N915AUCU2COI2 and is the latest available for the SM-N915A as far as I can determine.

Wouldn't that require ROOT access? The AT&T variant has a locked bootloader, so no root.

I've been experiencing the same issues since 12/19/15. I too have the N915A... and it has worked just fine up until that day. I noticed while I was out xmas shopping that it was rebooting a number of times while i stood in line waiting to check out of the store. I did not want to be that guy in line pulling apart an electronic device so i waited until I got to the car. Pulled the battery, she was a hot mess, then once it was cool I re inserted and powered the phone back up only to find it to be really laggy, a number a apps were crashing on without me touching them, random reboots, need to pop the battery, SD, and SIM to restart the phone without it getting hungup on the boot routine.
I recently used ODIN to load 'stock" 5.1.1. firmware but no luck. Not entirely sure that its N915A firmware, found it from other threads on the forum. Before knowing we could not go back to previous version, I took a whack at going back to those as well. So far I've reset the phone probably 7 or 8 times with a fresh OTA firmware install and only installing a few apps like Facebook, RSA VPN client and Team Viewer to keep variables minimal.
Ever since xmas day i stopped trying and been trolling the web for support only to here that the N915A has no root yet and other unavailable mods thus far . I have not tried to do anything else yet from a programming standpoint. I put the phone into developer mode, toggled some settings for the CPU and GPU in there so that they ran independently.Setup to be notified when an app crashed in the background. Downloaded Nova Launcher to avoid TouchWiz as I've heard that can be buggy with 5.1.1. So far the phone has been working somewhat normal. No random restarts, however if I restart it myself i may need to remove the battery for a minute to get it going again. The battery seems to be draining faster than it should, least of my worries for now. If i just let the phone do its things without trying to be a few thoughts ahead of it, it seems to process just fine.
Oddly its improving, I'm not sure why. Also, not pleased with it either but its better than having a brick atm. Intend to keep trolling the webs for more solutions until a root is dev'd and nursing this thing until it either hits the bucket again or for some weird reason gets better on its own....

I also have the AT&T Galaxy Note Edge SM-N915A. Ever since I updated via OVA this June 2016 it has been freezing/rebooting on its own/crashing apps. I have found 3 SM-N915A roms but cannot revert back to these previous builds. I have tried KEIS3 via Samsung to reflash firmware but it wont recognize my device name. After 2 weeks of crashing the phone is now a joke, when it once was king. It was such an awesome phone when it was released. Now I must lay it down to sleep. I guess I will get the Note 7 Edge which should be released this August.
I just wanted to express my frustration over ATT Branded Phone and will not be buying their branded phones anymore. I will be buying international versions or unlocked phones since ATT screwed me on this one.

I ended up being only days left in warranty and getting a replacement. Then a few months later I switched to T-Mobile and got the SM-N915T. So far so good and just OTA updated to Android 6.0. Only negative is T-Mobile's coverage in my area is poor, but WiFi calling, unlimited data (speed limited), and unlimited Binge On media streaming at full speed are great positives. T-Mobile Tuesdays is pretty cool too I must admit :good:
Same problem on SM-N915F even persisting after the new 6.0.1 update
Me too, my note edge N915G get restart constantly after ota update to 6.1 i try to flash with odin but always fail..
