Smartphone without the "phone" part? - General Questions and Answers

I almost never use my phone to communicate, and I have lately accepted and embraced my creeping paranoia. So, I'm looking for a device that does what my phone does, but without the phone, GPS, or microphone.
Does such a device exist? Is it possible to physically modify a smartphone to the same effect?

That means someone else can enable it via software too. I'm thinking more along the lines of physically disabling those components.

You can take out from the system these stuff and then unroot your phone. So no app can still install something to the system.

I suppose you're right. I've just never seen a question quite like this. I'd follow the previous instructions of rooting and disabling.

I'm kind of fixated on this idea of doing it at the hardware level at this point - I doubt it works that way but maybe get in there with a solder gun and pull some stuff out

Removing certain physical components would be a bad idea. If the device even turns on properly, you'll likely get crashes and FCs and whatnot. Even freezing/disabling certain functions like the phone can cause problems, since the ROM expects them to work. For example, being a phone, it has to be able to make emergency calls even without a SIM or service set up.
You could, however, use a ROM that lets you deny permissions to certain things (like calls, microphone, GPS). CyanogenMod, for example, or any of the number of ROMs that incorporate this CM feature. You'll have to disable them on a per-app basis, and you should always do a back-up first just in case things go awry.

I did that 3x already. It won't notify me that usb cable is connected to PC. It will still charge.
This may be a stupid question, but did it connect before? Are the LG proprietary drivers loaded?

My thoughts as well. Plenty have installed this without a hitch, not to mention it has nothing to do with that part of the phone.

Yes I use to transfer files all the time.
Well then I'd say one of the modifications made by dexopt killed the pre-loading of what ever's on the phone side that talks to the LG drivers on the PC. I know a lot of folks are anxious to mod, but as flaky as the SW is on this phone and the lack of experience the devs have working with LG products caveat emptor.
Try opening the app "Rom Manager" and selecting the option "fix permissions" that will probably get you back to normal again.

No. This patch is very simple and straight-forward. Paul knows exactly what he's doing and it's been tested by tons on the O2x forums and many on these forums. His issue is isolated and almost definitely has nothing to do with the patch.

I'm not questioning the dev's skills and I know there are some rock stars that are tackling the G2X/O2X. But up until this phone, the attention paid to LG hardware has been pretty light because most of their phones have been mid-range. No one has "tons of experience on the O2X" because it's only been out a few months. LG's software implementation is funky as seen by the need for proprietary drivers, bizarre Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, radio, interaction, and treatment of SD storage. All I'm saying is that unlike HTC, Samsung, and Motorola phones this one's virgin territory.
Try going in to settings/sd card and storage. click the mass storage only box. I did this while plugged in to usb and it fixed it. I unclicked the box and its still fixed.

I tried that too. I am going to do nandroid restore.
Did doing the fix permissions not work for you? I have seen this before and fixing permissions typically will fix it.
I'm also having issues with the patch. Ever since i patched, apps that require gps no longer work, and google maps force closes every time I open it.

[Q] Component missing i9001

Hey guys! I just bought myself an I9001 Galaxy S Plus from someone (second hand)... It's my first smartphone so i think i've been busted.
The phone seemed to work well, and everything was ok. But when I try to use the GPS (without internet connection), it does'n seem to find any server. I've changed some different ROMs with different Kernels, but it still can't reach any server.
I forgot to mention that with some ROMs the signal level is very oscillating...
Today i was looking at the phone and observed that there is a hole just above the battery where some component, like an antenna or something is missing. I don't know what component is that...
I think that the missing component is the one in te next picture. But what is its name and role? Instead of it, at my phone, there's a soildered wire... This trick was made to mask other issues of the phone? (if i replace the missing component the phone might have problems?)
I'll attach the photos, may be you can help me. Thanks!!!
Does anybody know?

I think it's a Connector coaxial, a micro miniature form of RF coaxial connector. Look at one i marked with an arrow.. You can replace that part from samsung service center
Best of luck.
The details:
Design LOC: RFS100
SEC CODE: 3705-001731
Description: CONNECTOR-COAXIAL
thank you!
but that's the reason why my gps doesn't work?
or that's the reason why the signal level is very oscillating when i'm using some custom ROMs?
do I need it, or i can live without ?

May be. Not sure..
I used to have a i9000B wich is basicaly the same device.
THE GPS signal simply sucks, it was so bad that sometimes it took 2 minutes to lock in open field, with some roms it got better with other even worse.
I used GPS AIDS with that device an app that was developed just to try to solve this particular device problem at that time. look it up, maybe it can help a little bit, but i thing this device will never get a high speed gps lock.

[Q] Touch+display dead

The display stopped working 2-3 days ago. On booting i can see the google logo for 2-3 seconds before the screen goes dark. The phone works and i can hear dings of messages, but i cant access any of it. Once i kept shut it for a day i was able to see the screen for 10-15 seconds( i used this window to remove the screen lock so that i can use the usb transfer ). Now keeping the phone shut for long duration has no effect.
I can see the fastboot screen but not the recovery screen throught it.
I also bought a slimport so that i could see the screen on my pc. It works (not for the fastboot or recovery), however the touch doesn't work and the volume and power buttons response is too sluggish. I can connect the mouse but it is of no use as i can't see the screen on PC and use the mouse at the same time. I tried adb ( i have no experience of it ) but i cant touch the allow pernmissions key on the screen for the above reasons. Also what advantage would adb be in this case?.
Any advice ?

I do t understand the question. Is this question one you're asking having already read the fastboot return to stock guide?
Same issue I had pretty much, it died about 2 months ago. I was still able to copy all of my files, phone worked perfectly but the screen was black. Had it replaced it no time. Is that by any mean a 311k? I've seen another thread like that pop up lately.

I don't know yet, I'm just trying to figure out whether it's a particular batch that started failing or it's completely random, just curious. The two replacements I was sent were 403K. Build is perfect, but they both had some light bleed issues. Looks like every batch comes with some good and some bad, QC definitely hasn't been too great on this phone.

They're not really built in batches. Manufacturing was continuous. They just changed the serial number every time the month changes so I dont think this would actually mean anything
I know but I'd still use it as a milestone more than anything, I mean there have been some differences in the units (eg bigger speaker holes), this way it's easier to track them along the timeline, because they definitely do change something in the manufacturing process from time to time if they have to make up for issues or something. They also did it with the N4 if I remember well.

Speaker holes is a bad example because even the latest built devices it was still a lottery whether you got bigger or smaller holes. That's down to what you mentioned earlier, QC

I was able to unroot and flash the stock image. The problem still exists though, so it has to be a hardware issue. Fortunately the phone is still in warranty.

I came across this in the Opo forum. The Dev says it shouldnt be to hard to port to the Nexus 5. Just wondering if anyone wants to give it a go.

I'm not entirely for sure but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that we had a low power core, and that someone had accessed it to use always listening but would have gotten in legal trouble if he had distributed it.

800 is just as capable as the 801. Low-power core is just used for a hardware pedometer instead of "always listening", as well as legal issues if you were to enable it without permission.

Lethargy said:
The low-powered core is only good for things that usually require wakelocks (i.e. always listening, music playing, hardware pedometer). Screen-off gestures are done at kernel level and does NOT require a wakelock, so the low-powered core is completely useless in that regard.
Only factor determining if screen-off gestures drains or not is how power is provided to the panel. If it's possible to power the digitizer on separately, then it uses less battery. If you have to power the entire panel on, it'll use more. Either way, it's the exact same thing and not really done much differently across all devices; just make sure the digitizer is powered in any way and wake the device (or whatever) on specific gestures.

But, would there be any legal issues if it was a feature ported from another phone.......
the nexus 5 low power core was defaulted to count steps instead of being a low power core. i dont think that it can be the low power core as we would like it to be. but i guess with lots of work, it could be possible?

Its still using the same low-powered core. Unless you want to somehow rip it out of a OnePlus One and hack it into a Nexus 5 (i.e. pretty much impossible and hardly a good idea)

It's still a low powered core (and the same one as any other device with the Snapdragon 800 SoC), just being used for a different purpose.
I don't know what it would take to reprogram it/use it for other purposes, but its been done before and there was a proof-of-concept, method not released because of the legal ramifications. If there isn't a way around it/loophole, or a legal way to do it, then you'll have to wait a few years until the Nexus 5 becomes an old legacy device that nobody cares about lol

if its a legal issue, then its something that someone would be able to do to legally to their own phone, just wont be able to distribute it. something like posting instructions how to do it would be legal, just distributing the finished mod could be illegal. but i dont see where legality would come into affect on this.

Nvidia shield tablet Power options help

Heya!
So i just got this Nvidia tablet with blisspop/lollipop or whatever it's called already installed.
Now i've been trying to read through some of the threads on this page but it honestly feels like im reading a different language.
I've noticed the Nvidia power options is gone from the tablet and since im lagging pretty bad often when playing games although not all the time, i'd like to fix this.
I thought the best option would be to increase my cpu usage, do you guys have any guides or tips for me on how i could do that?
Thanks in advance!
honestly, the kernel included in blisspop is plagued with odd behavior.. hangs, audio skips, and weird lag that comes and goes without reason...
some say it works fine for them, but myself and many others have had this issue... so, that is probably your problem.

Sorry, i'm not familiar with the contents of blisspop and such.
you can try the official firmware, but if you bought the tablet with blisspop installed on it already... it is probably killswitched... so you need to follow the instructions here or risk breaking your tablet for good.

I assumed the Killswitch is something that deactivates my tablet if i dont do anything to fix it, hence why i asked if it wouldn't work after a while if i didn't do anything about it.
I'll try to follow what the thread says. Thanks for the replies!
the killswitch could kill your tablet the instant it connects to the internet.
make sure you remove it BEFORE you do and you won't have any issues from that point on with anything.
