P2P voice communication - General Questions and Answers

Is there an app that allows P2P voice communication when the devices are within range of each other? I want to use them as a walkie talkie of sorts for when out on ATV. Would have a blue tooth receiver under helmet, phone in vest pocket. It probably goes without saying, but it wouldn't be over a lan or over cell towers. Strictly between phones using direct wifi connection.
Edit: I was able to find one called 'intercom for android' Hopefully it works well...

Surveillance capabilities in PDA phones

I'm trying to figure out to what extent some (conspiracy?) stories about the possibilities of government surveillance via cell phones are true. With more modern phones, it's conceivable that capabilities would be increased (built-in GPS could provide more precise tracking, for example).
So I'm asking the PDA phone techies:
What's the truth about the remote activation of a cell phone's microphone and transmission of whatever it pickes up, even when the phone is off? (roving bugs). Do any (PDA) phones come with that capability?
What's the truth about position tracking (other than cell tower tracking, which is unavoidable)
Thank you.
This /. article is scary. It basically says that handsets and the GSM protocol are designed to allow for remote microphone activation and live transmission.
Any hacked ROMs without this "feature"?
Not sure about WM....
But I do know that there is a program for some Symbian phones that can intercept text messages, voice calls and messages, to a different hand set without the other person being aware. As for remote activation on a WM handset I don't believe that this is possible YET? But I could be wrong?

ROM Recommendation for VOIP

Can u guys recommend me which is the best ROM for VOIP to work properly? Does the front speaker issue still exist in WM 6.1?
I understand using headset is the only option to get the voip working , but was wondering if there's solutions out there already?

What service do you have for VoIP?

SIP based service..I use www.pennytel.com
I am already using voip on my kaiser with official WM 6 ROM, but sound comes from the rear speaker
Front speaker issue is device dependent not WM version. AFAIK only a few devices work correctly. These devices had native VoIP at one time too. My latest VoIP cab (located here) can also connect with the GSM610 codec (kudos to dridders for figuring this out) which is much more efficient over a 3G connection. It also eliminates the one-way audio issues.
As an added benefit, the installation will work over a bluetooth handsfree as well. I've actually connected up over 3G then handed the phone functions off to my car handsfree w/o issues. Audio quality doesn't match GSM of course but its usable. For the most part this is a technology demo however. The only time I've found it really useful is when I'm in WiFi coverage but have no phone service.
I use asterisk with some providers such as pennytel ( Australia ) and other european providers. I'd really love to have my Kaiser working properly over WiFi (I didn't try over 3G yet).
I use to have a Hermes that was working properly (Ear Speaker) - though there was a lot of jitter - I now moved to the kaiser and VoIP (SIP) is finally working properly (no jitter) but only through the loudspeaker. I now have to use a headset...
I'd really like to have this finally working. I'm currently stuck to two stage dialing through asterisk (with unlimited plan to a few numbers) to use VoIP from my Cell.
Does anyone have some background info on how the VoIP plugin should be talking to the ear speaker (does it have to go through the "radio rom"? is it seen as a secondary speaker? etc.) and if anyone has ever fixed such an issues with other WM6 handsets?

As you are on the same boat, can I ask you which Bluetooth headset are you using? There are quite a few headset recommendations out there, but I wanna know from someone who is using it for voip. Thanks

Hey Sleuth, does your cab include the schap's setupvoip program?
Hi guys,
I use Sleuth's WM6VoIP and Schap's Setup VoIP version 0.3, had no problems getting it to work, tested both WiFi and HSDPA. Only thing is that I have to use the headset or BT cause of the well known WM back speaker issue.
I have no problems connecting to company's PBX thru WiFi using VoIP Setup, can register and make calls.
When I use the OpenVPN to tunnel to corporate network my SIP softphone application keeps registring using the WiFi network card IP address, not the TAP VPN adapter's one. Therefore voice can't be routed correctly
1. Is there a way to choose which Network adapter to use when using Internet calling and VoIP Setup?
2. Can anyone recommend any other application that's 'smart' enough to have the option of selecting the network adapter to use?
Thanks,
T.
VOIP while connected via USB?
Is it possible to use voip on kaiser when the device is connected to Internet via active sync USB method? sounds stupid, but if there's this would b a good solution to use voip in office where certain ports are blocked in office wifi.

[Q] Transformer as a "Handsfree"

I am looking for a simple way to recieve and send sms, even make calls, from my tablet. A car can do this through bluetooth. The contacts are already on the tablet and both devices (tablet/phone) have bluetooth. I am surprised there is not a preinstalled app for this use (MyCloud). Looking around I only found less than ideal solutions using dropbox, a server or the browser.
This would seem to be a simple problem to solve, considering the multitude of handsfree devices that can "control" your phone. I have had a Desire for the past year, rooted and S-OFF, and I like tinkering with it. But I have no idea how to write an app.
Any ideas?
what about voice search? calls emails navigate web browsing text
If you want to use your tablet to handle texting, so far the only app I can think of is LazyDroid Web Desktop. You can use it to remotely manage contacts and SMS on your phone, though the web ui is a little buggy and clearly not optimized for browsing from an Android tablet. But it does work.
With that sorted out, I just have one question for you:
Why in the world would you ever need to use your tablet as a remote to initiate voice calls on your phone? The tablet is already pretty poor on mic and speaker volume. You wouldn't be able to walk away from the tablet whilst keeping the conversation going unless you hold the tablet to your ear, or use a Bluetooth headset. And if you have a Bluetooth headset, you don't need the tablet to dial a number hands free. Cars have hands free units for operating cell phones because in many regions it's illegal to have a cell phone in your hand while driving. Likewise, if you were caught fiddling with your tablet while driving and an officer thinks it's distracting you, you can be ticketed for that as well.
Use a proper Bluetooth headset for handling voice calls.
I can see a use for it : if my phone is charging in the kitchen but I'm in my couch in the living room, it would be convenient not to rush to the phone to try to get that call...
Believe it or not, in my case, the phone always seems to ring whenever it's charging a few feet away from where I am. On the other hand, I pretty much always have my tablet close to me when I'm home.
Sync SMS, Google voice. I have used both for texting. GrooveIP for calls.

I've read some horrible reviews about delay for GrooveIP, what has your experience been like with it ?
I have a need for this.
I work out of my car all day. I have my phone paired with the Uconnect radio for making and recieving calls. I also have my TF on a laptop stand. I use it to close calls at client sites as well as a GPS. Since I have a 3g card and a zoom router, everything can sync via wireless and leave the blutooth for the radio.
I would love the ability to have my TF display contact info when then phone rings and let me press a big button to answer the phone. (sound coming from the radio still)
Or to just reach and press a big button on the TF to dial a contact.
Or to have the TF display incoming sms in a large, easy to read font.
Or to hammer out a quick sms on the TF keyboard instead of reaching for the phone.
Better yet put these features in carhome (and make it tablet aware!).
THATS what I would pay for!

Your best bet is probably using your Bluetooth. We have bought HC-05 bluetooth serial port profile (SPP) for communication over bluetooth (ebay HC-05 and you'll find it). BT is a kind of interesting protocol in that the BT module itself can handle as much or as little as it wants. In our case, it handles handshaking and pairing as well as a few other things but it only has firmware for serial ports. If you want something else like an HID profile you will want to find a different module.
As for doing it without an application, that's rather difficult if not impossible. Why not just write a Service that listens in on SMS broadcasts (no different than writing a simplistic SMS app) and then transmitting it over your Bluetooth connection (which will also be managed by your service).
Edit: I should specify that you don't need an HC-05 module. We were just using it to pair and RECEIVE messages from our phone. In the case of android just use the standard BT interface provided by android.

can i manage the device with bluetooth?
Which device. The phone or the HC-05. Anyway if I recall, yes you can. You'll have to read the data sheet but I THINK you can put AT commands over the BT connection. Dont take my word on that though. As for controlling ur android device from the HC-05, yea. Just listen to the serial port on ur phone app and do whatever depending on the incoming serial stream.

Need to enabled mobile data while on WIFI for DLNA in car streaming!!

Didn't think this would be some difficult but I am at the point now where I may have to send this in-car DLNA renderer back to amazon. See my wife has an iPhone and I have a Moto X Pure. We had bad experiences with bluetooth in-car audio and my previous bluetooth dongle just gave out so I purchased one of these
http://www.sabrent.com/category/audio/WF-RADU/
I thought DLNA while in car would be awesome and my wife could use the AirPlay functionality completely resolving our previous bluetooth connection and sound quality issues. Well I have got my wife all up and running but I seem to have hit a major road block on my phone!!
It's embarrassingly simple how easy it is to maintain a WIFI connection (for the sake of AirPlay) on IOS while routing all actual internet traffic through mobile data, thus allowing for music streaming from the internet via AirPlay, and all is well and good for her.
Now for me the story is entirely different. As if it isn't bad enough that the Google Play Music app that I subscribe and PAY for doesn't support a feature as ubiquitous as DLNA, but actually trying to accomplish was I was able to for my wife's iPhone on my Android has been hell. If you want to see exactly what I am trying to do looks like on IOS, go to that link I posted above and there is actually a video description explaining how simple it is and what it looks like. Basically the phone doesn't even appear to be connected to wifi as it actually shows LTE in the status bar, however it is still silently connected via wifi to the DLNA renderer to allow for streaming. There seems to be no way to accomplish this on Android.
I made the mistake of thinking it would be just as simple and went into my wifi static IP settings only to have my heart sink. So the long short, is there any way I can have my mobile data running all internet traffic WHILE maintaining a WIFI connection to my in-car DLNA renderer or should I just print the shipping label now and send this thing back? Thanks for all the help!!!
