I am looking for a simple way to recieve and send sms, even make calls, from my tablet. A car can do this through bluetooth. The contacts are already on the tablet and both devices (tablet/phone) have bluetooth. I am surprised there is not a preinstalled app for this use (MyCloud). Looking around I only found less than ideal solutions using dropbox, a server or the browser.
This would seem to be a simple problem to solve, considering the multitude of handsfree devices that can "control" your phone. I have had a Desire for the past year, rooted and S-OFF, and I like tinkering with it. But I have no idea how to write an app.
Any ideas?

If you want to use your tablet to handle texting, so far the only app I can think of is LazyDroid Web Desktop. You can use it to remotely manage contacts and SMS on your phone, though the web ui is a little buggy and clearly not optimized for browsing from an Android tablet. But it does work.
With that sorted out, I just have one question for you:
Why in the world would you ever need to use your tablet as a remote to initiate voice calls on your phone? The tablet is already pretty poor on mic and speaker volume. You wouldn't be able to walk away from the tablet whilst keeping the conversation going unless you hold the tablet to your ear, or use a Bluetooth headset. And if you have a Bluetooth headset, you don't need the tablet to dial a number hands free. Cars have hands free units for operating cell phones because in many regions it's illegal to have a cell phone in your hand while driving. Likewise, if you were caught fiddling with your tablet while driving and an officer thinks it's distracting you, you can be ticketed for that as well.
Use a proper Bluetooth headset for handling voice calls.
I can see a use for it : if my phone is charging in the kitchen but I'm in my couch in the living room, it would be convenient not to rush to the phone to try to get that call...
Believe it or not, in my case, the phone always seems to ring whenever it's charging a few feet away from where I am. On the other hand, I pretty much always have my tablet close to me when I'm home.
Sync SMS, Google voice. I have used both for texting. GrooveIP for calls.

I've read some horrible reviews about delay for GrooveIP, what has your experience been like with it ?
I have a need for this.
I work out of my car all day. I have my phone paired with the Uconnect radio for making and recieving calls. I also have my TF on a laptop stand. I use it to close calls at client sites as well as a GPS. Since I have a 3g card and a zoom router, everything can sync via wireless and leave the blutooth for the radio.
I would love the ability to have my TF display contact info when then phone rings and let me press a big button to answer the phone. (sound coming from the radio still)
Or to just reach and press a big button on the TF to dial a contact.
Or to have the TF display incoming sms in a large, easy to read font.
Or to hammer out a quick sms on the TF keyboard instead of reaching for the phone.
Better yet put these features in carhome (and make it tablet aware!).
THATS what I would pay for!

ok so i have an hd2 with android on it and am loving t. i also have an aftermarket sterio in my car. the sterio is bluetooth enabled so i can and do listen to music and make calls through the radio. the radio is also able to view text messges that are sent to my phone. but the hd2 isnt capable of this text message function when i use windows mobile. is there an app or cooked rom that has this fuction in it? i simply want to have the text message sent through bluetooth to my sterio in the car so i can view it. thanks for the help,

they dont even show contacts only phone numbers .
stereo is probably the problem not the phone
its a kenwood. and it does show the contacts. its just the hd2 isnt capable of sending texts over bluetooth. so im looking for software that will make it capable

I do not think you can get the radio to scroll it the texts it depends on the protocol of the radio and when it was made and how much added widgets are resident. But, you definitely could get them read to you over the radio via this type of app:

the radio is definitely not the problem. it is capable of viewing texts. it is a mater of the fact that the hd2 isn't capable. im just looking for software or and app that will make it capable.
This topic is pasted all over the net and it doesn't seem to be getting much attention, however I think it should be brought to a better light.
The idea is simple: Enable your Android Phone or Tablet to become a bluetooth reciever(to replace a headset or bluetooth speakers) and broadcast audio to the device and broadcast microphone from the device.
This could be used in several different applications:
1. Using an Android Tablet as a Car Stereo Interface
(Connect Phone to Tablet Via Bluetooth and use it as a hands free speakerphone, or aux out to your stereo)
2. Multiple Android Phones
(Have a business and personal phone? Answer all your calls from one.)
3. Phone or Tablet as Bluetooth Speaker/Mic
(Skype, PS3, Xbox 360, TV, Google Voice)
I would use several of these options on a daily basis, and would most definitely pay good money for an app like this.
So my questions are:
1. Is this possible?
2. If it is, how hard would it be?
3. If it isn't that hard, why hasn't someone done it yet!?

Just wanted to bump this because we need to put our heads together here and get this done. I need this capability for number 1 on your list of potential uses. I also would pay good money for an app that enabled this. Phones and tablet are rooted and ready to modify whatever is needed. Ii've bumped a couple other threads today as well.

I have been looking for this for a while. I use an old LG Eve in my car and my Captivate's Wifi connection for GPS but I would love to have it work for calls and music too.

Hi there,
just wanted to leave an incentive kind of post to say that I've also been looking for exactly the same thing.
My hunting on Google play just stopped after finding this post on XDA.
It's a kind of confirmation that there isn't a solution yet.
Since our rooted androids are more than capable of acting as a Bluetooth receiver, whether they may be based on new or older hardware, this seams like a very logical step in their lifecycle instead of getting forgotten in a drawer full of old and unused electronic waste.
Some doubts:
is a2dp required for this?
Is a2dp hardware related or simply a software feature?
Personally, I could live with a simple one way communication from a phone with mobile network (sender ) to the receiver. The used mic could still be the one on the sender side.
Wouldn't even need to have the receiver in a visible place as I would just connect a stereo cable from its headset output to an aux input on a hifi or a car stereo to hear music or acting as a hands-free system.
Hope this gets some real attention.

I can't beleive there is STILL no progress on this. Maybe I'll try asking a dev that has made similar apps the feasibility of this. There are so many practical uses for this that I cannot beleive no one has capitalized on it.
This would be a killer app if done right. Who here doesn't have an old phone laying around gathering dust? This could start off small; simply enabling the phone/tablet to be essentially a Bluetooth speaker, but then gain features and an interface using A2DP, which would evolve it into a killer way to make any car (with at least a tape deck) able to have full Bluetooth integration and control. I really hope someone can do this!

May be this is not the right way to do.
I know this is a crazy old subject but others have commented so I don't feel so bad.
I want to make my own android system for my car. I have everything I need for it (hardware/software-wise) except for this one thing.
A few years back there used to be an app called Tablet Talk, it's not exactly what we want but I'm still willing to settle for something like that. The way it works is phone->tablet->handsfree Bluetooth speaker. You could make and receive calls (including seeing the contact names/phone numbers on the tablet) from the tablet itself, then the audio/microphone goes to the handsfree device. Another added feature was when a call is happening the app stops all audio coming from the tablet until the call is done.
Like I said before, it's not perfect but at this point, I don't ever see it happening any other way. I found the app a few days ago, it doesn't exist on the app store anymore, unfortunately, I could get it to run. It just kept crashing.
If anyone knows of something then please let us know.
Years later, found just this thread: I want to do similar thing: Use a private phone (for my sake rooted with custom fw) as a hands-free bt device with an unrooted business phone (non-rooted and secure managed with company tool). I also don't want call forwarding or similar. Just do and answer calls, use phone book and call list via bluetooth like my car radio do for years.
Is there still no solution?

It is possible, I use mine with my Google Voice number and the Groove IP application on the tablet. It will place and receive calls, and my Bluetooth headset works fine with it.
It does take some setup tinkering, and there are free methods so you don't have to buy Groove IP, but believe me, the ease in setup makes it well worth the cost.
As an aside though, if you have a Bluetooth device, why don't you just pair it with your Nexus, you wouldn't have to move it.

Apologies, I can't help you with that, the Google Voice option is the only way I know of to use the Transformer to make and receive calls.

I am having trouble with my Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter, which is a common problem, according to the very few available threads on the internet.
This also didn't work with any other Smartphone before i.e. Samsung S3 or Blackberry Bold 9700.
Cliffnotes:
-pairing, media streaming (different source) and receiving and making calls works great! No issues there
-transfering the contact list results in a big mess, I have to dig in there if I can figure it out or if I just transfer one contact after another....
-now for the problem.......I installed Cyberon Voice Commander because it gives me the best behaviour and voice recognition since I am a native German speaker. Google, Dragon and AIVC don't work really well. But it doesn't matter which voice assist app I use, because it is the Bluetooth adapters fault. The Nexus 5 is rooted and runs stock Kernel with KitKat 4.4.2.
When I press the voice dial button on my Pioneer AVH-P5000DVD deck it activates the Cyberon Voice Commander app (or whichever is set as default). so far so good, that is what I want.
But! the dialog between me and the phone is almost impossible because the output volume over the car speakers is way to low. I have to literally pick up the phone and look at it's display to see what the voice commanding app is doing because you have to wait until it is finished asking what I want to do. (just holding a phone is illegal in Germany)
Assuming the app understood me right and starts dialing everything turns to be fine from that point because the volume of the actual call is perfect!
When the phone talks back to me I have to crank the volume all the way up to understand it a little bit and then turn it back down fast before the phone call starts or it'll blow the speakers out....since my car is quite loud when on temperature I don't think I will understand anything when I am driving.
I heard that the app TASKER could be programmed to raise the Bluetooth volume at a certain point and then lower it again. I checked but it only goes up to 15, which I already have set before with the stock volume slider. Additionally I have no idea how to configure Tasker to (maybe) get rid of the problem.
Has anyone ever heard of a similar problem and / or has an idea how to handle it?
Again, it's only the voice command prompts that are way to quiet when I start the voice dialing function via Bluetooth, everything else is fine.

I have this issue as well. SO what did you have to do with this app?
For those of you that haven't heard, Siri Eyes Free is Apple's iPhone intergration with select Honda and Chevy cars.
What happens is that the car's interior microphone and the steering wheel voice button both act as a proxy to funnel input to the phone over bluetooth.
Did anyone hack together an Android app to work with iOS's input api? All I really want is to send text messages / initiate calls using google now voice.
I could get an iphone for testing. I have a laptop and a phone with bluetooth, if those can record the raw bluetooth signal
I picked up a car that has Siri Eyes Free (after a firmware update) and have an Android so I'm bumping this .
Nearly a year later I'll bump this as well. Any ideas here? Just moved from an iPhone and lack of voice integration over Bluetooth is a bummer. Thanks.

Another bump on this for visbility and hopefully some additional useful information. Long story made short I recently got a new car, a Ford C-Max with MyFord Touch, that has Siri Eyes Free capability (as of v 3.6/3.8). Sadly the car I upgraded from had a cheap <$100 aftermarket radio that happily activated Google Now through the standard BT voice dial button and allowed me full hands free functionality and would like to get that back.
What I have found upon a little digging is Apple has published developer documentation which covers Eyes Free functionality:

As someone who can somewhat understand and comprehend this information but couldn't code to save his life, it appears to be fairly simplistic and is just a handful of custom BT serial commands, simple back and forth request/acknowledge commands, and an SCO audio link. Most of the user interface setup seems like it may be on the accessory/head unit end rather than the phone.
I would love to take a whack at this but unfortunately would not know where to begin. My first thought is would something like this with the serial BT communication, establishing an audio link, and triggering Google Now, be able to all be done without root?
If anyone begins on this or also wants to have a go at it, I'd definitely be willing to help where I can including testing and debugging.
