low gps sensitivity - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi is anyone having problem with gps sensitivity...i downloaded gps test app from playstore...i open the app and the gps is functioning with an accuracy of not less than 20 feet with a good gps signal..however the coordinates(the latitude and longitude, three last digits) seems to be the problem...my s6 was able to fix the coordinates when i open the application intially before starting to drive...but after making a short movement and halting..the coordinates become unstable and doest fix to a stable coordinate...my previous s4 however is able to do so..after multiple movements, the s4 gps was able to fix the coordinates..the s6 however fails to fix the coordinates precisely(the three last digits of longi/latitude are unstable), is this a common problem faced by S6 users or am i facing a hardware/software problem...can anyone try downloading the app and share your experience..thanks..

IGO 8 - GPS Troubleshooting

Hi everybody. Has anybody the same problem with IGO8 and GPs. When The GPS is off I can use the software for map browsing, route calculating etc.. At the moment GPS is connected to satelites the application shuts down without any message warning.
Do you have any ideas how to fix this problem.
I have also tested TomTom, Google navigator, GPS tuner and other navi soft and all of them work fine.
Thany x for help.

no problem here, i can use igo 8 to navigate fine with gps
Dear Matelko. Your software and whole system seems to be veeery stupid and the problem can be maybe OS related. As I know, some of your apps are working strange, but my not, even we have the same packages used. Just share iGo8 with me and we will test it this weekend(maybe) if we will have enough time and a bit less of work around the cottage or with cars.
Btw,welcome to this discussion Mathew. You need to watch it all and you will get too much infos about Raphael.

1. Update to the latest version of iGO8.
2. Disable Assisted GPS (it is off by default) using Advanced Config 3.2 found on this forum.
Works fine for me, only a little lag.
That lag I know, but I can live with it. My physicall position is 50metres before the position that shows TomTom. Btw.TomTom is working fine for me without aGPS. With aGPS I had no reliable fix available. I like TT7,because of the maps coverage in comparison with iGo. I said goodbye to iGo at all.

I just installed the app..I'll give it a whirl tomorrow outside. I did a test recording indoors and I noticed something weird.. the video doesn't show what I'm looking at, it shows everything rotated 90 degrees. But the video that gets uploaded to the site looks fine.
edit: Have you checked Qik? They're kinda your competition..they don't emphasis location as much, but it's an option there too.
looks interesting but what would you need it for?

Thanks for the feedback.
Could post details of which Android phone you tested on please and also if you have cooked or the OEM ROM?
On the Tattoo when you rotate the phone the video view rotates too, however, I did code both the broadcast and record screens to stay in portrait mode, which could be the cause of the problem you reported.

I'll try to give you a couple of examples:
The broadcast option is intended to be used for live tracking, for example, a phone mounted in a car and broadcasting can be tracked and viewed live on the web by other people.
Here's a link to how the US Navy used the app for asset tracking.
http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000005831
The record option is generally used by people for social media - here's a good example from the website
http://www.ix-m.com/gps?movieID=20713_08122009114312
Hope that helps?
Its exactly the same on my Liquid, with 1.6

I've uploaded v1.1 which might fix this - please give it a try when you have time.
The new version is not fixed in portrait mode, so I am hoping you will get the default camera rotation - fingers crossed.
Caveat: on the Tattoo when you rotate the phone during a recording or broadcast it terminates it, so best to say either in portrait or landscape until I can resolve both issues
The GPS doesn't work on my Liquid.
I get fix and everything is ok when I go into "GPS - Enabled".
But when I start to record either in "Broadcast" or in "Record" mode, it loose fix after about 15 seconds.
And when I check the recordings it seems that the GPS data freezes at the start of the recordings, since the speed doesn't seem to change.
V1.1 seem to have fixed my GPS bug.
But the 90 degree rotation of what I see on my display is still there. As long as I keep the phone in portrait position the recording comes out correct on the web page. Will go out for another test drive now to be sure it keeps the GPS fix, and check if it updates the GPS data while I drive.
And the background is white on my Liquid now in v1.1, then its impossible for me to see which file I have marked in the Geocast folder.
Edit: nope, still the same GPS problems, can not keep fix.

Thanks for feedback above and also for your post #13.
FYI I've coded the app to drop the GPS connection after start-up to save on battery usage, so when you select broadcast or record it will re-initialize the GPS receiver, which depending on weather conditions etc, could take a while to get a fix.
In the Windows Mobile version we have an option "GPS always on", which might help (if I added that), but that doesn't help if the GPS receiver cannot fix on enough satellites (less than about 5 and you can get some random locations)
[edit] explaination about the number of satellites required for an acurate GPS location - if there are less than 3, then your location data might not change or be quite random - 4 to 7 satellites and you get resaonable accuracy ~10 satellites and then it's pretty acurate on the map.
I don't think this is the case. Every other program I use gives exact location and speed, at the same locations as your program looses fix.
Your program also takes very long time, and sometime can't regain fix at all until I turn it of and restart it. So it must be a bug.
The Liquid also have very good GPS receiver(much better than the one on the Hero), and also have A-GPS so it get fix very fast.
If the problem is that you have set the limit for how many satellites it need to approve it as good enough for your program, then at least it shouldn't affect the other GPS programs I have running at the same time.
After your program messes up my GPS, the other programs take a very long time to regain fix after I have shut down your program.
So as I said it must be a bug, and if its not then its useless since you can only use it as a video recorder, not a logger since the location you get on the map jumps all over the place, and the speed recordings show everything from N/A to 1000 kmh.

Yes, sorry it probably is a bug in the beta, but it does works fine on the Tattoo and as that is the only Android phone I have to test with I posted the link here to try and get some feedback to improve the app for other phones.
FYI there is no code in the app explicitly setting a limit on the number of satellites - my previous comment was generic about GPS, the higher the number of satellites the receiver aquires the more acturate the positioning is.
For example on the Windows Mobile version of the app it shows you on the website how many satellites the receiver has aquired throughout the tracking -- I'll need to delve into the Android APIs to see if that is possible to add to the app and that might help with debugging problems like this.
Many thanks for the feedback.
Ok, and if more guys can test it out on other devices maybe that can help too. I am subscribing to this thread and will test out a new version as soon as you have one out.
My girlfriend is using the Hero now and I don't have access to it until friday, but I will ask if she can download and test it on that.

Thanks - I think the next thing for me to concentrate on is the GPS issue, because you say the app is useless if that doesn't work correctly on all Android devices
I'll upload a new build tomorrow with some additional GPS info displayed so we can see what happens on your phone - from looking at the API I will be able to display the accuracy (in meters) that the receiver is returning - but I can't see anything in the location API that gives the satellite count.

There's an app called GPS Status that shows you how many satellites you are connected to (it shows position in a radar view and also the count). I don't know if the source code for it is available, but maybe looking at that app will be helpful to you.
GPSTest and Tricorder also show number of satellites.

[GT-I9003] [FIX] Samsung Galaxy SL Easy GPS Fix

This small guide is an instant GPS Fix tried on Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 and may work on other phones. This small guide will reduce the time taken to lock to satellites and has been tested inside a building with 8 floors and I was able to achieve lock to 4 satellites.
A much better guide to GPS Fix is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13133654&postcount=142
Since that guide requires a little bit of manual work, so this is just a small software tweak
So here is what you have to do:
1. Turn Off GPS
2. Open LibTestMode. If you do not know how to open it then you can open it by typing the following code in the dialer (Froyo Only): *#*#3214789650#*#*
3. Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to Standalone. (Some people have reported better accuracy with MS Mode)
4. Under "Application Settings", Change "Timeout(s)" to 100
5. Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276
6. Reboot
NOTE: The attached screenshot is inside the building. I have received better results outside and accuracy of upto <40 feet was achieved.
Cold Start- GPS.
Hi there,
My Samsung Galaxy Pro was a bit reluctant in locking on to satellite signals, it used to take no minimum than 5 minutes.
Then I chanced upon an app in the market: "GPS Aids"... Do check it
Just wanted to know your views on "GPS Aids" & such alike apps...
Im now getting GPS lock in less than 5secs with 9-10sats in view & 7 in use inside my 3storey building surrounded my such more buildings and tall trees.
The best accuracy rate I have achieved is 2metres & most of the time it is 4metres
Thanx,
S.K.Pingua,
New Delhi.
Gps aids? does it really work so well? let me try it
Yes GPS AIDS V2 is a great software. I am getting GPS lock within 3-10 seconds on XXKB3 FW.
i'll try it and then post about thanks for the advice!
Gps aids works really well indeed, i get a lock within seconds, thanks a lot mate

GPS FIX i9003
I purchased my i9003 a fortnight back and had wonderful opinion , till the time i checked the GPS and surprisingly it did not work, could not understand how a product can be defective out of box. however when i googled for a fix , came to know there was significant issues with galaxy S phones
Contacted Samsung customer care , the technical folks have no clues and seems to from a different planet, all of them either denied there was a problem or asked me to do a hard reset, one tried to convince me for an hour that A-GPS worked only on network triangulation and did not have a actual gps and will give only an approximate location.
coming back to the problem , The earlier issues in Galaxy s related to configuration which were rectified by a fix and 2.2 update
the problem with i9003 i feel had something to do with the inbuilt sensor, i tried lot of software from android market including GPS Doctor, GPS Aids, GPS Fix, GPS Status, GPS test and GPS essentials among others... none of them were able to fix the problem , although few of them were able to detect gps satellites ( sometime even 12) but were not able to get a fix. the sad part was two of the apps were paid apps and total waste of money
In my trial and error approach I tried a software called Turbo GPS (its free) from android market, the major difference in this software vs. others was it had its own software to manage the sensors and after installing software the problem vanished. all you need to do is to run Turbo GPS wait for a couple of minutes and then start google maps. it worked like a charm.....

Hi adgdeepak, tough but successful experience. everyone has a share of GPS challenges, nice to know yours.
I crosschecked & double checked but could not find "Turbo GPS" on Android market!
Anyway, happy navigation
Not to take anything away from the OP author or anyone else, but would anyone be willing to test mine out? It is in my sig. If it helps you great, but its more for me to see if my theory is right that any android phone will work.
So far, it works on the Droid, Captivate, Aria, Inspire, Desire +HD, HD2, and the list goes on. I will not be checking this thread But its another alternative I wanted to point out, and am curious of its success.
'good old fix' for captivate or vibrant strikes again...same with 'press antena' one, nothing new...
again users have to fix their phones by editing service menu and with a piece of paper/coper =)
as it is PROBABLY the same BCM4751 chip - with same crappy board-antena contact as in sgs - you SL users are GPS handicapped ;]
could someone check what chip it carries?
//edit regarding hardware fix -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970

real problem is with recorded tracks (eg mytracks) - while i am not moving fixed position likes to travel around, and wile moving it likes to record me off position
what bothers me is also fix stepping - every 5m not by 1m ad in my 5 years phone

No such luck.
My setting were already set to the above. Not a single GPS lock.
Firmware version 2.2.1
Baseband version I9003DDKA5
Got it to work. This is specific to me.
background:
Samsung i9003 from India.
Provider: AT&T, Airtel
Current Location: California
Here what I needed to do.
1. Root your phone
2. Down GPS Aids from the Marketplace
3. Use the forced LTO method from the setup wizard of GPS Aids. (this requires your phone to be rooted. Native method does not work for me.)
4. run LibTestMode and change the Application Settings -> Operation Mode -> MS Mode (Standalone did not work for me)
5. Reboot
Looking for to use this when I go back to Bangalore again.

Question Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic - GPS problem with sport activities

I recently bought this watch and I am very pleased
But it surprised me that not all sports activities have GPS tracking.
Snowboard, MTB or snowshoe do not have GPS tracking. These activities have been used recently and I do not have a registered route.
Is there an option for each activity to have GPS tracking?
I've a similar problem with GPS functionalities: my watch is unable to fix satellites, I think this is a firmware bug
I found something about this problem:

Today I tried google fit and here gps works without any problems with activities.

There is an entire thread about this here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/gps-issues.4417711/page-2#post-87552393
I did not had the time yet to check if enabling location in auto detect mode sorted the issue.
Thanks for guidance. I did but the problem is not solved.
Did not work.
Also check this out (and the comments)
"If you open the workout widget on the watch and choose your workout from there instead of just selecting the run widget, you can see at the top of the screen that GPS and Heartrate are blinking. When they both are solid and you see your heart rate you are ready to press run or walk, etc. That way you know everything is locked in before you start your workout."

Maybe in your watch, my GPS still works fine.
I don't use Google Fit and I don't exercise/hike with my phone - just the GW4 Classic 42mm.
GPS works fine and tracks/routes are recorded fine (within accuracy of the receiver).
Only existing issue is that auto-detection of exercise (walk/run/cycle) works but does not initiate GPS route recording; you need to start the exercise manually to have route recorded.
Weird, but worked for me>>>
removed original straps from watch
cleaned watch dial
powered off and heated up with hair dryer
powered on in outdoor
and voila!! GPS fixed. i have tracked cycling, running working fine now!
also i have changed straps locations (means, swapped upper and bottom straps)
