[KERNEL][07/19/15] ButterKAT Kernel v1.0 [OC/UC] - ZTE ZMAX ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other Develo

So after many nights of headaches and whatnot, finally got a treat for you guys. I introduce to you ButterKAT kernel for the stock 4.4.4 ROM. The initial release is slim in features but I plan on really amping this thing up after I get done with this last week of summer school. Come hell or high water, you need to read this entire thread before you flash anything.

DISCLAIMER:
I'm not responsible for what happens to your device. In the words of the old Gingerbread Cyanogenmod releases: "Dragons ahead". You fully understand that I nor ZTE, Google, the noobs, etc. are responsible for ANYTHING that happens once you do this. Consider your warranty voided; you're welcome
FEATURES:
Overclocking to 1.6 GHz
Underclocking 192 MHz
Added the Conservative and Interactive Governors
Compiled with Linaro 4.7 Toolchain for increased performance
FAQ:
1. Will this work on LP (Lollipop)?
No, nothing Lollipop will boot from this kernel
2. Can you add [feature]?
I'm willing to bet that nine times out of ten, I've already considered it.
3. When is the next release?
The Golden Root Rule: Never Ask for ETAs
4. Can you clock it higher?
No, I'm not taking it any higher...
5. Is this compatible with Masterchief87's boot switcher?
There isn't one currently available, but I don't believe in stepping into another developer's territory. That's his project, and I won't be making one for this kernel. If he does it, then the answer is yes, there is one. If he doesn't, then no there isn't.
6. Which ZMAX Versions will this boot?
It will boot all of them. I used the MetroPCS 4.4.4 kernel source code to build this and tested it on a T-Mobile ZTE ZMAX. It will work on any stock KitKat ROM, whether that's Butternoob, pure stock or if someone else ever comes along and creates a stock ROM, those too.

Thanks for this man. I'm 20, in college, and working a crappy paying minimum wage job in Georgia($7.25) and I need to get off of my parents' phone bill so I can start doing things on my own, so I went to MetroPCS's website and they have the ZMAX for only $99. Thank god someone has taken up this device on XDA because I don't know what I'd do. I can't wait to see the features that you bring to this, I'm coming from a Droid DNA on Verizon running an M9 Sense 7 ROM.

Oh my. +99
Sent from the future.
I await all ROMs with gingerbready Greatness!!
And to be honest, I thought we'd be a little ways into Jan before we seen the source code. Glad it took just 1 day after the Nexus S release. Now, the many-months wait for OEMs to get Official updates out to the devices =\
if that was sent from the future, that comment must mean that you are afraid for us because something is WRONG with gingerbread because you would have KNOWN about this already! LOL so HOW IS IT?!?!?
Yay!
Sent from my Epic 4G
Yet still no official 2.2 for us.... awesome.
Is this different from what was dropped last week?

How did GB source C drop before FroYo????????
If you are referring to what I posted, it was source code
For the Nexus S kernel Android version 2.3
And yes, pretty cute we have available source code for a new
OS before we seen a piece from any Android 2.2 source code for our Epic

I think the million dollar question is what are the predictions for an official 2.2
rom for our Epics? jk but I think after samsung and sprint gets ahold of it first.
Otherwise it would be another AOSP like cyanogen.
I've got a related (and hopefully not stupid) question regarding the process.
So, I know we're waiting for the 2.2 kernel source for our epics, obviously.
Generally, what's the process in between Google dropping a version's source, and it being released (by samsung) to us? This is not a complaint-- I'm really just curious how it works.

I know someone can explain better than I can.
Google drops the stock rom. This wont run on our phones without drivers, and support for specific hardware for our device. Then you have Sprint carrier modifications like VVM, ota updates, 4G and other configured apps. After all the work is done, developers can go back and modify things to their liking.
Otherwise you would have a from the ground up like CM,
where its a lot of trial and error, getting the ROM to support hardware/software.

I'm no developer or expert, but i'd give it a week or two before we see a slew of ROMs, maybe less. Its great that Cyanogen has 4G working on the Evo, so cant wait for 4G-enabled CM6/7 for our Epics. As for an official 2.3 update from Samsung.... March is my earliest guess

I'd say we get official 2.2 updates in a few weeks. The leak is out, so they are probably just cleaning it up for release. The plain-jane (no custom ROM) leak works flawlessly on my phone tho.
At this point Noobnl is going to deliver faster than Samsung is on the Froyo. He's got CM pretty much done it seems. Whenever Cyanogen's done with gingerbread source for CM7(im presuming) noobnl will hopefully start on that as well.
I bet that the hardware drivers for 2.2 will work with 2.3, sounds like 2.2 to 2.3 is a lot less of a change than 2.1 to 2.2, but I could be wrong.

For Samsung it's more rational for them to use their dev's time to spend on making new working firmware for new devices that are debuting at CES and to ready the firmware for those devices.
Samsung's strategy has changed over the years and is now executing the mantra "first out the door with new technology." While this is great for those of us who like new toys, it's a set back when we want long term support for our new toys. If their R&D resources are tied up working out new firmware for the next gen, they lose focus on their current customers.
If you've kept up on the latest engadget, gizmodo, boy genius, etc etc news - you'll know there's a dual core super duper galaxy whatever chip coming out soon. That's where the resources are now. For a company that has been lagging behind in innovation for the last few years in the mobile area, this is their new direction... Innovate quickly and be the first to market. Support resources are but a second thought; overhead.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...uct-crisis-as-choi-tries-to-triple-sales.html might give you a better perspective of the company.
So if I am reading this right....
Once we have CM6 running on our epics it will be a lot easier for us to get Gingerbread installed; for that matter any new verisions?
Does this really need to be in the Epic section?

[Q] Google Play Edition HTC One Mini

Has anyone tried to use the Google Play Edition RUU for the HTC One (posted here) on their HTC One Mini? The hardware looks similar enough that I'd think it would work. I'm not sure if the lack of NFC is an issue.
Context:
I am a noob to both this forum and Android. I am ready to make the switch, but I want a vanilla Android experience; I'm just not a fan of the Sense UI from what I've been able to play with. I also value smaller, lighter devices, and the HTC One Mini feels perfect to me. I'm an experienced technologist, I've jailbroken iPhones (admittedly less complicated), and I've been a tester for prototype devices at a mobile company I'd prefer not to name (more complicated), so I feel absolutely comfortable with the process of rooting a phone like this. I also value OTA updates, so a Google Play Edition is exactly what I'm looking for.
Any thoughts or suggestions on the subject would be appreciated. I've already gotten several ideas from other posts here. I do apologize if this has already been answered, but I did search and am pretty confident it hasn't been directly addressed.
No, don't do that. Especially not the RUU since that does more than just installing a stock rom.

Google Play Edition RUU is recompiled from source nothing to do with Sense 5 and that's mean different kernel that won't boot the HTC One Mini.
You have to wait for an CyanogenMOD available and after that if you don't like it we can build/port AOSP (pure google android).

That's incorrect, the GE rom is actually just visually desensed Sense and can be booted with a Sense 5 kernel. It's nowhere close to being AOSP.

That makes good sense to me and, in theory, means the Google Play Edition ROM could boot on the mini since the hardware of the same architecture. I think the question is whether the same drivers can be used for the other internals. In other words, we could be able to boot the OS but be unable to use any of the components.
GSM Arena has the full tech specs of the HTC One and the Mini. When I compare these, I see a GPU that, according to Adreno wikipedia article, supports the same OpenGL, OpenVX, and DirectX versions, so I think this would be fine. The chipsets are slightly different and that worries me a bit since that could imply different radios, etc. I'd feel better if I could see a teardown of the mini, but with how miserable the teardown of the full sized version was I doubt they're clamoring to start that.

Correct. And....ohai!
The partition layout is completely different as are the kernel base and ramdisk offsets. If you flash that RUU...you may be heading back to the AT&T store immediately afterwards.
I have most of the prep work completed for cm-10.2....so sit tight while I work out some kinks. I will make a thread in the original android dev forums once its ready for alpha testing.

Really?? So the One users can switch from GE to Sense without flashing kernel? No atleast ramdisk changes nothing?
So if we port a m7 sense 5 we can also port GE in the same way?
That doesn't mean we can also base a CM on sense 5 kernel?

Yes. And this is how I was able to port sense to the First so easily. HTC's "AOSP" roms are purely Sense roms with specific apks replaced with AOSP apks. In 4.2+ a lot of changes need to be made to kernel to boot AOSP. Those changes won't necessarily be compatible with sense

Sorry guys to bump this up but I could not find any further info on this...
Is there any development or is it a deserted project?

ps. BTW is there AOSP rom available for the Mini? Cyanogenmod seems to have heat issues and the wifey is already hot enough so I don't want to give her anything problematic

I would not install any CM-based ROM (CM/Candy*/PacMan/whatever) on M4 until the overheat issue is dealt with. They all have reports of bricked devices, and it looks like any device can (or will, eventually) get cooked any moment sooner or later (some people got theirs bricked after half a year, mine was lost within half an hour).
In the meantime, bilal_liberty has created a LibertyROM GPE for M4!
GPE is Sense-based and thus safe to install.
* EDIT: According to tr1gg3r84, CandyROM is not CM-based.

I'm very sorry if that is the case, then I must be mistaken for another ROM; there were a bunch involved in this issue.
But no reports does not mean it has not happened. As far as I know CandyRom is CM-based *, and overheating issue affects all CM-based ROMs the same. Not sure what makes CandyRom different in that aspect. *
Once again, it may happen or it may not. You can either see it as a lottery or a ticking time bomb. Either way, I better go with the ROM that just does not have that possibility by design.

Yeah get your facts correct before you post Candy Roms isn't even Cyanogen based like the rest you stated and no bricks have been made by using this ROM either. For a GPE I have a booting GPE over Six month ago before I got rid of my M4 with the help from rmbq with kernel but ever release it coz thought it was pointless.

I'm very sorry, based on official description provided in CandyROM's threads I thought it was (partly) CM-based. I'm a user, not a developer, so obviously I can't discuss what's under the hood, I have to distinguish based on information developers provide me.
Obviously, I was wrong, for what I apologize. I will correct my previous 2 posts accordingly right away.

Yeah well I should know what I'm on about, after supporting this device for so long before anyone even cared about developing for it....(well there's a lot of so called (Devs) that like to spread rumors about other ROMs to increase their user base) pretty much sick to death of it tbh. [ROM] [EVITA] [AOSP] [4.3] [cfX-Toolchain 4.8.y+] codefireXperiment OFFICIAL NIGHTLY

Introducing codefireXperiment for your device! This OP is going to stay slim and bloat free, just like codefireXperiment. No marketing buzzwords either. We take such confidence in the speed and performance of this distribution, we challenge you to find a faster and more stable one!
Warning: we only support anykernel methods of custom kernel installation.
Here's a bit of info you may want on this project for how we do things differently:
CLICK HERE to find out more about the new team working on this project since our TeamEOS merger.
No features you don't need which slow the device down, or put your data at risk of being stolen. If you want to give it away, it should be your decision.
A fast and clean install with no UX decisions made for you. You make the ROM whatever you would like.
A team constantly exploring totally new feature sets and optimizations geared toward you, the user
We utilize a plethora of optimizations in a build system unlike any other:
Each build has a toolchain built for your device at the time of build. No more generic toolchain android builds.
Consistently updated upstream toolchain module source with our custom backports, fixes, and optimizations applied in a patch at build time.
Fully built utilizing Link Time Optimization (another custom ROM first). Feel free to google this one a bit to get an idea of the performance gain.
Many repositories have code fixes, cleanups, and many minor optimizations which are too generous to even speak of here.
Optimizations are toggled on and off based on device for the best experience we can acheive for your device without sacrificing any stability
Many Qcom optimizations and AOSP master (upstream) optimizations and fixes using device specifications to determine usage.
Fully built utilizing strict aliasing and isognu++11 mode.
Full "-O3" build. To those who don't know, this is the highest "optimization level" available in gcc that sets many other flags.

Thanks to the CM team for all thier work on this family of devices, especiallly h8rift for his work on evita for all of us to enjoy.
Also thanks to my beta testers for experimenting with me.
DISCLAIMER: I will not be held responsible for any damages caused to your device by flashing this ROM. Your warranty is now void.
By proceeding you accept the risks involved with flashing ROMS. While I test everything on my own device, I cannot garauntee yours will not explode into kittens and rainbows.
KNOWN ISSUES:
ROOT ACCESS : On-going disscusion within the team but as of right now root is not available to userspace. Root currently works over adb only. Flash the superSU.zip and carry on if you need root access for apps like TiBu or root file explorers. Otherwise you really don't need it
BOOT ANIMATION : i'ts just full of struggle, it's an old animation made for smaller screens. It freezes and goes blank screen on first boot. Don't be alarmed, it'll be OK. New custom boot ani is being designed now by a fellow team member
BROWSER : Ocassional FC on embedded browser streaming video. You tube and links that open a video player are fine, just embedded video.
ROM is still under construction so i'm sure more will surface but this should be more than ready to be a daily driver.

How's the Camera on the One XL in this ROM? That's the only thing that's really ever bugged me about AOSP ROMs on our device, is that the Camera isn't nearly as good as Sense Based ROMs (not devs fault, camera libraries in sense are much different than AOSP). Does it change orientation quickly?

Yeah, I'm sure I will. I've always wanted a Nexus device and I couldn't pass up the $199 price tag. I'm hoping I will be able to keep both devices but the wife will probably want me to sell my One X to pay for the N4.
I did take a look at the N4 section and it was a little out of control. I was always amazed how much development the DesireHD/Inspire had and the N4 was like 5 times that, lol. I think they have more kernels than we have ROMs, lol.

Right now there is not. I played the same trick AOKP does do get recent on long press home. AFAIK aokp still doesn't have remapping either.
It could possibly be added later but I'd have to discuss with the rest of the team. They are far more concerned with getting the rest of their supported devices back up on 4.3 than anything else right now.

I'm trying backup my stuff to flash this. Im pretty horrible at that task. Can't wait to run this rom again. I'll report back about how it runs. Thanks so much for this.
Edit: seems to run smoothly although many expected features are not present. Also some root apps take alot of work to get working suck as the latest AdAway. I wish it used Trebuchet and had most of the cm10.2 features especially the keyboard and clock.

Not yet, last I talked with synergy he was adding us to the nightly build list after I merged our device trees in, but it must not be done yet. Op will be updated as soon as I know something certain. If there's a hold up I'll post newer builds on my own until he catches up.

Edit: seems to run smoothly although many expected features are not present. Also some root apps take alot of work to get working suck as the latest AdAway. I wish it used Trebuchet and had most of the cm10.2 features especially the keyboard and clock.

Some "features" will come but the team concentration right now is getting all supported devices caught up to 4.3, and debugging major issues. I didn't have any issues with any root apps but I don't use adaway.

New nightly is up in OP.
Changlog:
Bluetooth- fixes for 48hz audio & issues with some car connections
Fixes for some issues with games crashing in 4.3
Updated camera proprietaries/kernel code from sense 5 Evita leak.
synergy is on vacay for a week so it will be a few days before we get added to the nightly builds. In the mean time I'll try to kick a few out to hold us over.

Release the source code!!!!

so this last week i recieved my Huawei Ascend Mate 7 MT7-L09 and a 128GB microSD card. i have to admit that after a few minutes i was a bit disappointed....... not with the hardware but with the software. i waited 2 days and installed CM11 (thanks Demazda!!). after installing CM11 i fell in love!!!! that same day i reset and updated my nexus 5 with the lasted PAC-ROM and gave it to my dad. this phone does everything i could want it to.
the only drawback that i have is that there are many functions not available due to the lack of a kernel source. without it our devices will not be able to host the many great custom roms such as CM12, PAC-ROM, Paranoid Android, KANG, OMNI, and many, many others. google has made it clear that in order to use android, manufacturers must release their kernel source to the public.
given that, i think that we should make our voices heard! im sure that a few hundred letters and emails would make our voices heard. if Huawei wants to gain a foot hold in the US, then it must start listening to its customers. i really want to soon see complete roms for our mate7. is anyone willing to join me??

Hey, thanks for the interest. It seems that there are only two of us interested i guess. Let's see if we can get some more people interested.

Nebula is coming...

I want to introduce myself. I am part of the Nebula team. We have decided the v10 offers us not only a great phone but a new challenge as well. We are currently looking at the the device tree to see what we can do to get some ROMs over here. You will see us posting more in the very near future. Until then cheers.
As requested the nebula team consists of:
Eliminater74 (aka the main man, the one who does the coding).
thewalkingdude(aka the P.R. guy, the one who does the talking).

So excited!!
Thank goodness.
I am sooooo thrilled to get that someone is finally going to Crack open the potential possibilities for roms with this phone. I took this phone over the note 4,note 5, 6 edge+. I will definitely keep my eyes and ears open. Thanks guys for reaching out to the v10 community.
Sweeeeet
Who do I bill for ruining my best pair of jeans upon seeing this thread? ?
So excited to have the Nebula crew with us. Let me be the first to say welcome! And please, as with every device, kindly disregard those that don't know how to read/search/comprehend that dirty flashing is the main culprit for telephonic STD's.

ROMs are not the main thing we do. We are known for our kernel. We took the g3 far past anything that was said to be possible.

I am use to people that don't read.
I have been hoping for some good kernal development since I got this phone!
Im ready to provide some $$ support ....... Im pretty sure there are guys that are interested in seeing speaker volume support as well as decrease in battery consumption. (well at least myself). But once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
We looked at many devices. This has a lot of potential. I was shocked no one has tapped it. Look at our g3 threads and see what we are about. Our g3 community will include this group as well. Feel free to check them out.
Need to get a working Device tree. The Current device tree is No good.. first the CPU's are listed wrong....
second the Offsets are listed wrong..
also no RIL config.. and policies are possibly wrong too, but im no expert in that field........
So in my eyes, The whole device tree is garbage.. You dont have cm13 because of that device tree..
The G3 is much older device then the V10 and we have Cm13 going long time ago...........
and the G4 is a slight upgrade over the G3, they have Cm13 going from what I hear......
then the v10 is a super G4.......... and doesnt have cm13............. The CM maintainer for the v10 and G4 are one in the same...
but he managed to get the RIL for the g4 but not the V10........................ but he tells me he copied the g4 device tree.. Which is possible. but he missed
many files.......... the G4 copied from the g3 anyhow.. and thats cool.. thats what he should have done..... but always check your work..
I even went on the CM wiki on porting a new device and followed it for getting the offsets from the boot.img.. and none match the ones in the current v10 device tree............
So another mistake there...............
Biggest thing issue here is device tree.. Till we get a working device tree.. you wont have any good roms.................
I originally came over here to build a kernel.. I didnt expect that I had to build a new device tree for everyone............
I build stand alone kernels. meaning I dont need a device tree to build my kernels............. But what good is a kernel if you all are riding on
a bad device tree and old aosp stock kernel.................
So now, I am gaining some knowledge on all msm8992 devices and their trees.. trying to compare them....
I went solly off the N5x which has the correct settings for the cpu's... I would take googles word over cm's anyday...............
Every single CM's msm8992 device tree I looked at, had the cpus wrong............... Only google seemed to have it right............
and before someone says, well google and our aosp are dif........ Ill answer that now,
Fist off the CPU;s will stay the same regardless of CAF/AOSP or whatever else you can toss up.. a MSM8992 is a MSM8992 regardless.............
only things that will be dif, is the caf related things.. other then that.. its 80% the same tree..............
I am going to be straight with you all.. I can see your all hungry for custom roms and kernels for this device.. This device is a great device.............. Nothing wrong with it at all..
I am a kernel dev not a rom dev.. I stopped the rom building long time ago....... But the one person that I know which could have everything fixed and up and running for you
is @aclegg2011, Only problem is.. he doesnt have the cash to get a V10, He has a G3 and N5 and N6 and N7.................. This dude is Official Maintainer for Bliss and RR for the G3..........
He knows his way around the building process like no other.. His build machine is capable of building a full rom in 15 mins..........
Hes known to have fixed many of the CM mistakes.................. But the only issue is this, Unless he gets a V10 Used/new or cash to get one..... IT just isnt going to happen..
I will do my best as I can.. and hes already told me some things.. but he cant dig deeper into it, unless he has the device............
Im not asking for anything...... but im giving you all options............. Its all up to you now..........

I'm up for that, happy right now with my V10 debloated and xposed framework running. How do I donate?

Im also trying to get Dorimanx on board too.. Hes a very well known coder.. I talked to him today.. hes really thinking about it.. The guy is like a God on the G2 Kernel Development.
but hes a really good coder..... Im trying to put together a well known team.. We are getting there.....
And just so people understand things, Nebula is my Team Project that I started 10 months ago...... @aclegg2011 Is in no way affiliated with Nebula. But we work very close together...
Hes more of a freelancer.. But he knows his stuff........ I am just trying to get things moving for the V10........ I didnt buy the phone to steer it at .... I want to bring over the custom roms
and kernels...............................
My only issue now is, I never worked with aarch64.. So thats going to be new too me.............
Once I get going.. it would be easy street from then on.........
