Okay, beg pardon for being dense, but what do you mean, 'flash'? How? Should I fire up Odin on the computer? Is it an Android Debugging Bridge method of running a script? Do I need to use Odin anyway, to flash that older kernel first? Perhaps just use my S5 to download and install the zip? Am I making it too hard? I know I must be.
I like to follow instructions, and the 1st one has me scratching my head.
Thanks.

Are you rooted on a lollipop rom
Yes. OptimalROM 5.0 by BigBot96. It's working great.
I am a flash junkie from way back, and I thought I was 'done', what with this complex locked bootloader safestrap business. Is this light at the end of the tunnel really is a train? I'm a wreck for flashing different flavors. The Odin back and forth on kernels has soured my interest in the whole flashing thing.
I'm interested. This sounds like a good workaround.

Verision 2 is a fix for those people that flashed the rooting tools on kitkat rom and screwed up safestrap. But as it turned out flashing the original didnt mess anything up so I felt no need to post it.

Gotcha. I just assumed it was an updated version and flashed it. (S5 was on BOC4) and seemingly worked fine. Looked @ both zips, nothing jumped out at me as different. Except md5. Lol
Thank you for responding. You have to be a busy man, and super talented to do all you do with the locked BL. Amazing. Half the ROMs I see have your name. I'd love to see what you could do w/o restrictions.

It will work fine on lollipop rom Basically the only difference is the V2 doesnt put the apks in there own folders inside of system/priv-app folder. On kitkat the apk were not in seperate folders and would not read the apps if they were in their own seperate folders. I then figured if you were on kitkat you already would have safestrap installed to be able to flash a zip. So basically I decided to leave the zip as is so the safestrap zip if flashed on kitkat rom would leave the apk's in their own folder causing the system not to read them therefore causing your original safestrap apk to not be overwritten. Basically what im saying is I wasted my time making V2 but if you flashed it you are perfectly fine!

@jrkruse I am running MOAR ver 6.62 and everytime I try to flash this in SS it keeps saying failed. I checked the md5 and they match. I did install the NI2 Flasher .apk and it works flawlessly. Could the NI2 Flasher .apk be the reason why it fails when I tried to flash this?
Thank you in advance.
EDIT:
Well I finally got it to flash.
Now my question is, when I am done flashing stuff in SS, do I still have to flash OA8 flashable kernel before I reboot out of SS? I know it says that all this stuff is built in, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie here, but I've read the guidelines, don't hate
I got an international version SGS4 (i9505) and it got instantly rooted the day I purchased it.
The first rom I flashed was a i9505 Google Edition Rom... Everything worked fine but I didn't like it so much.
So I cleaned everything and I installed Foxhound (2.0)... and the problems started: maybe it's just because the two ROMs use different kernels, but my device started reboot randomly!
So I flashed a kernel cleaner (the Kernel Cleaning_Script by jivy26), I cleaned the cache and all the data... Then I installed the latest stable version of CyanogenMod (with Android 4.2.2)
Nothing.
My SGS4 continously reboots and sometimes it's difficult to restart it. I'm so sad, I just bought this phone and it works so bad.
Maybe I should install a Stock Rom and unroot my device?
Any advices/cleaning methods to stop these random crashes?
Please respond
Dem
I would flash full stock via odin and use it for few days.

Try a factory wipe first, if the reboots keep happening, I would do a fresh, clean flash of the stock tar. What I usually do is I format data through TWRP, it will say I lost root and if I want to retain it, I answer no. I reboot into download mode and flash stock tar through Odin. Then I root with CF-Auto-Root, and finally flash a custom recovery.

Thank you so much... then I decided to install an Official test leaked firmware 4.3 (I9505XXUEMJ3) via Odin.
Everything works fine, but (although the system's more responsive and stable) I had another random reboot God why?
Maybe it's just a problem with kernel... I installed 3-4 Roms, and maybe my phone is not clean... but I flashed via Odin, I erased everything (cache, format/data/factory). It's so strange...
I feel like I have to throw away my phone... please help!
EDIT: my phone crashed and it is bootlooping now.
My phone is now officially bricked. After I flashed the latest official Samsung Rom my phone started bootlooping and crashing at the Samsung logo. The only thing I can do now is to use the recovery, but even if I format/data factory nothing changed.
Any possible solutions?
My patience is collapsing with this phone T_T
So let me get this straight...you had an instability issue (reboots) and after all the help from the guys here suggesting to flash a stable stock rom, you decided to go ahead and flash a leaked firmware?
Find the latest OFFICIAL STOCK 4.2.2 rom and try again. Don't even root, just check with a stable rom so you can see if your issue is hardware related.
Try downloading and flashing one of the sammobile firmwares.

Why on earth are trying something you don't know about. If you don't follow the guides here on xda it will not work. You have to install custom Recovery's in order to clean and erase your whole phone. If you don't it will keep on DIRTY FLASHING and acting up or rebooting or what ever. Stock recovery is basically useless for what Your trying to do.
Edit: the link you posted is the way you should have done it in the first place

I must admit I failed so bad :\ Should I re-root to install a custom recovery? And then? How do I clean my phone? T_T I had a custom recovery, but I just format all datas/factory and cache. Is there anything else I can do with a custom recovery (considering that I don't have backups on my phone).

Which stock 4.2.2 rom did you try?
When you installed 4.3 stock rom, you probably also installed the new knox bootloader, so in order to go back to 4.2.2 you must install a stock rom like XXUDMH8 or XXUDMI1 that have the new bootloader.
Download one of them from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9505&pcode=0
and then follow the instruction from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477

1) I should install a stock rom (such as XXUDMH8 or XXUDMI1) with the new bootloader
2) Then I should root using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413014
3) Then I should install a custom recovery and... ?

Yeah that's basically it. After you have custom Recovery installed do a complete wipe of everything twice just to make sure. Then go ahead and install stock with Odin and your random boots should be gone.

Keep in mind that with so many flashes, if you already have the new bootloader, you may have triggered the Knox efuse and voided your warranty.
You can check that in download mode, if knox warranty is 0x0 you are fine. If it is 0x1 you have triggered it.
You can look for more info in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832

Stock LG D850 20F Lollipop 5.0.1
This thread is based on my original post found in the AT&T G3 Lounge Thread..
What's new is I've just packed 20F into a flashable zip for those with TWRP already installed. It's not much.. but I know many would prefer not to use ADB or terminal.
What's this thread have to offer?
Flashable/BUMP'd D850 20F "rom" (system/boot)
Flashable D850 20F modem
Stock D850 20F partition images
Patched/BUMP'd D850 20F boot.img
Manual directions for installing TWRP if already on 20F
Manual directions for installing 20F if flashable zips aren't your thing
The above mentioned can all be downloaded HERE ON CODEFIRE
Flashable "rom" directions:
1. Put D850_20F_Lollipop_Stock.zip and D850_20F_2.0.1.c1.13-00050_Modem.zip on sdcard
--For root: Also grab the SuperSU zip from Chainfire HERE
2. Boot into TWRP
3. Hit install button and select each zip file you need
4. Swipe to flash... done. Rom flash will take a bit.. be patient.
5. Reboot phone when rom, modem, root is flashed. First Lollipop boot may take up to 5 minutes.
In some cases you may need to wipe cache/dalvik/data(factory reset) in TWRP if the phone gets stuck on boot animation or if things just aren't acting right. To avoid data loss be sure to use something like Helium or Titanium Backup prior to upgrading to Lollipop. TWRP backups/Nandroids don't hurt either.
Having issues with internal sdcard permissions afterwards? Having issues with downloads not saving? You may need to fix your sdcard permissions. In terminal emulator or adb shell enter:
Code:
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0/
Some have mentioned external sdcard issues.. not sure if anyone has way to fix that? Maybe same command as above only pointing to ext-sd?
MD5:
85460a3ce5d0259477d2f03c64e867e9 D850_20F_Lollipop_Stock.zip
df2564aa824b35dbaf8bd886b5210b4a D850_20F_2.0.1.c1.13-00050_Modem.zip
Below I am including my original directions for manually flashing Lollipop.. whether completely stock and already on 20F... or already rooted/BUMP'd/TWRP'd.
You do not need to pay attention to any of this below if you are just flashing the rom above... these are the original manual directions only. #learn2read
If you want TWRP just downgrade aboot.img and laf.img to KK.. then BUMP'd TWRP will work. Must be rooted to be able to flash TWRP obviously. If not already rooted -- Root with THIS METHOD HERE or use THIS ONE-CLICK METHOD if typing an ADB command scares you.
If rooted and on stock 20F Lollipop follow #1
If already TWRP'd/BUMP'd on KitKat (or using AOSP) and want to manually update to rooted stock 20F follow #2
#1
Download D850 TWRP HERE and rename to twrp.img. download stock KK aboot and laf images HERE. Stick all 3 on root of internal sdcard. You'll also have to flash a patched stock 20F boot.img so that the Lollipop system still boots when using the downgraded aboot.img/laf.img. You can download the patched boot.img HERE. Stick it in the root of your internal sdcard.
Now issue the following commands with ADB shell. If using terminal app on phone do not use the "adb shell" command:
Code:
[SIZE="2"]adb shell
su
md5 /sdcard/aboot.img (confirm md5 = 348064a6d4f8d5b7d3eeec79d86de5bd before proceeding)
dd if=/sdcard/aboot.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot
dd if=/sdcard/laf.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/laf
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
dd if=/sdcard/patched-20f-boot.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot[/SIZE]
You are finished and can now reboot back into the rom. You are now rooted, BUMP'd and TWRP'd on Lollipop!
#2
If already TWRP'd/BUMP'd and you want to upgrade manually to 20F Lollipop... download the patched boot.img HERE and stick it on the root of your internal sdcard.. along with the 20F modem.img and system.img. (@timmytim[/MENTION] shared system.img in the lounge thread HERE so be sure to thank him)
You may or may not have to "factory reset" in TWRP. YMMV.
[If flashing system.img you must be in TWRP, not the rom, while issuing these commands]
[May need the "Koush Universal ADB" drivers to get ADB goin' in TWRP]
Code:
[SIZE="2"]adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/patched-20f-boot.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot
dd if=/sdcard/modem.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem
dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system[/SIZE]
If flashing 20F system via this method you will also need to root since the system.img is stock. Download SuperSU zip from Chainfire HERE and flash the zip in TWRP AFTER flashing the system.img. You are finished and can now reboot back into the rom. You are rooted, BUMP'd and TWRP'd on Lollipop.

Following method #1 downgrades your bootloader so that BUMP works. If you did method one(#1)... you are BUMP'd/TWRP'd...
BUMP = G3 unlocked bootloader method.
Any kernel's (and roms with new kernels) flashed thru TWRP on your phone will need to be BUMP'd from here on out unless you go back to 100% stock.. including proper bootloader. Most custom zips should already be pre-BUMP'd so that should not ever be a worry.
Anything that needs to be discussed further about BUMP or unlock does not belong here.

Yes to both of the above questions. @jaybird38 to make restoring 4.4/aosp nandroids effortless.. be sure to backup the modem as well. you may or may not need to reflash KK modem when using 4.4 roms. @louvass yes, that's exactly what the flashable zips are for.

this can sometimes be fixed by running the following commands in terminal emulator or adb shell:
Code:
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
and perhaps a reboot after.

deodexed or odexed?
edit: thanks for the update. I assumed it was odexed but wanted to verify. I'll hold off until there is one deodexed for modular packages then.
Flashed and booted up into the setup. Thank you very much!
Next challenge is to port D85520i and get it to pass security checks!
Great work, mate.
Just a heads up, thought most will already know this. Started process at ~100% and ended at 90% battery. Major heat increase during optimization (expected) and debilitating lag for the first ~10min (also expected.) Device is slowly settling down after a reboot.
***UPDATE***
Also probably no surprise to anyone but me, I had to reinstall busybox (even though I did a dirty flash)
Any advantage of the stock LG lollipop? I went straight to CM12 when I got the phone. Wonder if I should try stock out.

I mean think about it ....... Stock camera which is always on point ... And now you have a rooted stock lollipop so you can use a lot of root access apps. Maybe XPOSED modules... There are advantages in stock rooted lollipop. Its user preference. I am on Illusion but will probably make a backup of this for safe keepings

tbh, the only thing Stock got on AOSP is the camera. If you want a flawless camera experience then Stock, if you don't mind the average photos and limited options with the camera then I'll stay on AOSP
Appart from the aosp experience that you may like, there are some extra features packed in stock roms such as a better camera, remote controller, dual view, knock code, one handed operation, circle case support and so on... The better camera and remote controller itself are two of my most used features on the phone so stock lollipop is not an option but I have to admit that aosp lollipop has its strong points too such as a more cleaner interface, more battery life, more updated OS... So, it's a decition only you can make.
If I flash this on a stock backup will I still be able to restore stock 4.4 or my cm 12 ROM.just don't want to loose them.

Exactly this. I've been hoping for cloudy for a long time, but I think i'm about to go back to a stock rom. I use my camera a lot, who doesn't, but the AOSP roms just don't quite cut it. If you do get something like CM, use the Lenovo camera, much better images.
Few days ago I was looking for a I9505 based Rom for T-Mobile M919. Found this thread by @muniz_ri
Today I was looking for the same for the I337M & Found that M919 kernals are compatible with I337.
So I tested the M919 guide by @muniz_ri on I337M & It wokred
I tried the I9505 leak based ROM. I9505 Back Edition Official ROM will also works.

Here is a copy of my pre-rooted backup of the firmware. Thanks to @ausdim for his twz kernel required to fix wifi on the T-Mobile M919 (already built into the backup).
Instructions:
1. Extract the I9505XXUHOB7_Stock_Rooted_Backup folder from the .rar and place that folder into your TWRP backups folder, i.e: ext-sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/xxxxxx (The name of your backups folder may vary. If a backups folder does not already exist you must first create a backup using TWRP's "Backup" function before proceeding).
2. From TWRP recovery perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe Dalvik, System, Data, and Cache.
3. From the Main Menu press "Restore" and restore the I9505XXUHOB7_Stock_Rooted_Backup .
4. Reboot. Done!
Tip: For blazing fast speed disable animations from Developer Options.

It's basically a modified TWRP recovery for those of us with NB1 and newer modems, as the OTA to that one effectively locked the bootloader, and no one has managed to crack it since then. It uses an exploit to allow for the flashing of ROMs but does not touch the kernel or boot image.
If the kernel for this ROM is available to ODIN, it may work.
I guess this is the kernel.

Unfortunately we cannot flash it unless we are still on old modems. Safestrap will not touch the kernel, and TWRP will not work on our phones due to the bootloader being locked. In order to change the kernel, we have to use ODIN, which uses a different file type (tar.md5).

for us with locked bootloaders im on the s4 active at&t the odin file must have Samsung signature and at&t if I remember right
This won't work on AT&T I337, only the I337M which is unlocked. Android 5.0 is not compatible with any of the kernels we can flash, and kernels packaged into tars only flash if you can sign the package, and the kernel also needs to be signed for the bootloader to accept it. No Safestrap users can use this. Anyone with a normal custom recovery can.
Ah! This is great, I've been waiting to confirmation that this works with the i337M. I wasn't willing to test this myself. Which ROM was most stable between the two? Have you noticed any issues other than mobile data? Which ROM suffered from mobile data issues?
Also, were these ROMs official releases? Or just leaks?

Rooting tools just puts everything on your sd card that you may need if you have to start all over. TR root BusyBox And SuperSu And Safstrap. It also install SafeStrap And the SafeStrap without odin apk on your current rom. Just click on Safestrap Icon grant SuperSu access and make sure Safestrap is installed . Then click on the SafeStrap Reboot app and click flash grant SuperUser access when prompted. Then click on the reboot to safestrap box. The phone will reboot toSafeStrap without having to use odin to flash a kitkat kernel. Then you can flash your rom. Then after you flash your rom you will need to flash the Lollipop Stock kernel zip located on your External SD card and Internal SD in a folder called .1Stock_Kernel_Zip it should be the first folder at the top of the list. Install the zip that matches your firmware. Then click reboot system. No need to use odin. The above process is if your on a Lollipop Rom already. If on a kitkat rom you will need to reboot to safestrap flash rom then reboot to download mode and flash firmware
SafeStrap app in the S5 root folder says it installs. Tap reboot to recovery button just reboots. What is "SafeStrap Reboot app"? This isn't making much sense here at all

Ok this happened to me also. The only way I got it to work was this. I put the BOD5 full factory image on my internal sd card and used flashfire and flashed the system image and the cache image and the boot image added a wipe to wipe data injected root. I also had it flash the SuperSU zip 2.49 just incase the inject root didnt work Once the rom installed I activated video calling it then worked. Then I used flashfire again did a full wipe and flashed this rom and its worked ever since. I think there must be something in the cache image that triggers it and once its triggerd its fine. There might be a better way but I cant get it to do it again so I even odin back to NCG firmware and started over and when I flashed BOD5 rom and firmware video calling worked right out of the hat. Maybe dirty flashing over BOC4 then making sure video calling works then reinstalling with a full wipe might also work

You have to use the SafeStrap Reboot app to reboot to SafeStrap not the SafeStrap App. The SafeStrap Reboot App Actually flashes the NI2 kernel without using odin. Then if you installed the rooting tools for sd BOD5 zip you will have a folder on your sd card named 1.Stock_Kernel_Zip it should be the very first folder in the list. Inside that folder is the Stock kernel you will need to flash in safestrap to reboot back to rom. Just flash the Stock_Kernel_Zip and then click reboot now or reboot system from safestrap.

I'm trying to get my phone ready to install this rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...xtrestolite-deodexed-mod-edition-1-0-t3094423 ) and my current specs are: Model: SM-G920V, Android Version: 5.0.2. Baseband: OC3, Kernel version: 3.10.61, Build: OC3, Hardware: MDF v2.0 R2, VPN 1.4 R4.
This is a virgin untouched phone from the day S6 released. I wanted to make sure I do this right as I remember messing up my S5 upgrading the build to something nobody could root and you couldn't go back to the old version. I'd like to not repeat that with this phone
Also is it possible to get the newest MM beta perhaps? Like with this rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65588463&postcount=9473 )
Thanks.
After 30+ views and 0 replies I decided to try for myself. I found pingpongroot and did that. Rooted successfully. Then I downloaded twrp manager and tried to install the newest of that. It says it installed successfully and asked me to reboot. I rebooted and now I'm stuck at a bright blue start up failed screen.
Any idea how to fix this?
I was typing up something as you posted that lol. Oh well.
You were on a winner with ping pong (root without voiding warranty), but you've blown that now by flashing twrp.
Best bet now would be to flash latest 5.1.1 stock ROM via odin, then install arter97s modded version of twrp 3.0.0-0 (V13) and SuperSU 2.68 to get you up to date and wait for marshmallow.
Or just flash the older twrp 2.8.something as is now to hopefully just get you up and running again.
Latest official twrp is pretty much broken currently.
Edit: scratch that, arters mod won't work on your phone. Just find an older 2.8 version of twrp for your phone and try that.

What would be wrong with using 3.0.1 or 3.0? They are only working with MarshMellow at the moment?
Ahhh. Just read up. Your bootloader is locked. No custom recoveries will work.
You should of just stopped at ping pong. It was your only way of getting root. (Which was what I was originally going to suggest lol)

Sorry for sounding so newb but I rooted the phone so doesn't that mean it's unlocked? I read that thread and I'm downloading those 2 zip files to attempt to use odin to flash one of them. Unfortunately the mirror is so 1980s slow it will take 6 hours to download each file.
Ping pong used a completely different exploit to get root. Now you need a custom recovery or kernel to get root, both of which you can't do with a locked bootloader.
What did you flash originally? Hopefully you can just flash stock recovery back and stay on 5.0.2 to keep root.
If you are forced to update you may never get root again unless a new exploit is found.
Sorry, I haven't had much to do with a locked bootloader so can't be a great help. Do plenty of reading while whatever you are downloading is going and hope you can find a way to stay on 5.0.2

Thanks I got that file and did successfully flash it with odin and did re-root with pingpong. How do I get my phone to the next step to get a rom loaded? I tried using twrp manager to load 2.8.7.2 and that just gave me the same result of the same blue screen. I'm reflashing back to the original rom right now sigh.
Ahh good times, that worked out well then. No custom recovery will work on your phone unless they find a way to unlock the bootloader. As for roms, check the Verizon s6 section. There was some there although most are probably abandoned by now since not many people would still have 5.0.2. Can't really help you on that front.

So what version allows an unlocked boot loader and whats the best way to upgrade to that? The person whose rom I quoted in post #1 says they recommend using twrp.

It's your specific phone that is locked. (SM-G920V). Big difference to 920F or 920I etc...
Not much you can do about it unfortunately. Lucky you even got root.

wtf? So Verizon phones sold in America are screwed out of the ability to do roms? Thats a first for me. This sucks.
