Just a ton more Verizon crap to get rid of. And I do mean a bunch! Im just trying to see what can be safely removed

There's way more bloat in od5 than oc4. It wasn't just the finger print fix they added.

Rooting tools just puts everything on your sd card that you may need if you have to start all over. TR root BusyBox And SuperSu And Safstrap. It also install SafeStrap And the SafeStrap without odin apk on your current rom. Just click on Safestrap Icon grant SuperSu access and make sure Safestrap is installed . Then click on the SafeStrap Reboot app and click flash grant SuperUser access when prompted. Then click on the reboot to safestrap box. The phone will reboot toSafeStrap without having to use odin to flash a kitkat kernel. Then you can flash your rom. Then after you flash your rom you will need to flash the Lollipop Stock kernel zip located on your External SD card and Internal SD in a folder called .1Stock_Kernel_Zip it should be the first folder at the top of the list. Install the zip that matches your firmware. Then click reboot system. No need to use odin. The above process is if your on a Lollipop Rom already. If on a kitkat rom you will need to reboot to safestrap flash rom then reboot to download mode and flash firmware

SafeStrap app in the S5 root folder says it installs. Tap reboot to recovery button just reboots. What is "SafeStrap Reboot app"? This isn't making much sense here at all

Alright so, I'm a bit new at this part since I JUST got my phone rooted finally. What the difference between this and your BOC4?

Just flashed this last night coming from kk clean flash I didn't have time to play with it till this morning I noticed don't have the video call option anyone else having this.? I have it activated since this option was available for our phone

Ok this happened to me also. The only way I got it to work was this. I put the BOD5 full factory image on my internal sd card and used flashfire and flashed the system image and the cache image and the boot image added a wipe to wipe data injected root. I also had it flash the SuperSU zip 2.49 just incase the inject root didnt work Once the rom installed I activated video calling it then worked. Then I used flashfire again did a full wipe and flashed this rom and its worked ever since. I think there must be something in the cache image that triggers it and once its triggerd its fine. There might be a better way but I cant get it to do it again so I even odin back to NCG firmware and started over and when I flashed BOD5 rom and firmware video calling worked right out of the hat. Maybe dirty flashing over BOC4 then making sure video calling works then reinstalling with a full wipe might also work

You have to use the SafeStrap Reboot app to reboot to SafeStrap not the SafeStrap App. The SafeStrap Reboot App Actually flashes the NI2 kernel without using odin. Then if you installed the rooting tools for sd BOD5 zip you will have a folder on your sd card named 1.Stock_Kernel_Zip it should be the very first folder in the list. Inside that folder is the Stock kernel you will need to flash in safestrap to reboot back to rom. Just flash the Stock_Kernel_Zip and then click reboot now or reboot system from safestrap.

I didnt think there was alot at first but after looking through it there are alot of changes especially in the Video Calling And HD calling framework. I think Verizon must be getting ready to add calling over wifi because there is some of that framework in there as well

OTA upgrade for rooted 4.3

I'm trying to apply the OTA upgrade to my rooted UK Retail Moto G running 4.3. The upgrade keeps failing, even if I disable root using the option in SuperSU. Is there some step I am missing out, or must I use a clean flash and lose all my configuration? (The phone was rooted using the superboot method, and had Xposed framework, but this had been removed using the Xposed framework app.) Thanks.
What exactly does fail?
There should be an error message when you try to flash the OTA.
Look at the screen and report back, the boot.img you flashed to get root on your phone shouldn't have any impact on the update procedure.

+1 Phone downloads the update. Restarts and gives "error". Phone is unlocked and rooted.
You either have to restore all the stock things you modified - boot / recovery OR save the OTA, flash stock and put the OTA again into the sdcard, restart and voila

boot.img is the kernel, you only need to flash back a stock kernel if you have flashed a custom one earlier.
The superboot method does not alter the kernel, it just does some magic one-time boot that roots the phone (ie alters files in /system). You still have the original kernel in place. superboot just flashes superSU. superSU is the app itself plus certain /system file addtions and alterations.
To remove root all the /system files that rooting updates must be set back to how they were, the updater does a checksum on the files and if they differ from what they should be then the update fails.
superSU for example modifies /system/etc/install-recovery.sh as well as adding new files to /system. So /system/etc/install-recovery.sh would need to be put back to how it was.
Depending on which files the superboot method uses will depend on which files need altering back.
In general you are going to want to flash back stock /system as thats easiest (or maybe you did a nandroid and can restore /system from that).
ok, got 4.4.2 installed now
retail 8GB unlocked using Paul's method 2.
uninstalled SuperSU using the option within the app's settings
used the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219 to flash the stock retail gb 4.3 rom, then copied the retail gb OTA update file (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49390749 ) to the sdcard root and performed the update in settings -> about phone -> system update
now going to see if titanium backup worked!

Thats good. So SuperSU basically cleans itself up and reverts all /system files it changed back to their original values. Easier than restoring a stock /system.

Yes you can, superSU has an 'unroot' option. On another thread Im sure someone had issues with it as it left some junk lying behind, but for the poster in this thread it seems to have worked fine.

if you restore entirely back to stock, ie stock recovery as well, then waiting for the OTA to download the 'offical' way may be better. This will then update not just Android but your stock recovery as well. Im unsure if installing from the sdcard updates the radios (ie mobile radios) or not. If not then again installing the officiall way may be better.
If someone on here knows if the mobile radios get updated I'd like to know. I see many /modem files in the update.zip. Its these Im interested in whether they get flashed or not when using the sdcard method.
rooted 4.4.2 now working:
followed the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563599&highlight=mismatched to install CWM recovery
downloaded the latest SuperSU from http://download.chainfire.eu/376/SuperSU/ , copied to root of the sdcard and installed using CWM
titanium backup (free version) worked a charm, only thing it seems it didn't backup was my live wallpaper choice! bit of a pain to have to click "install" and "done" on each app (all 181 of them!) but much quicker than reinstalling and setting them up again from the Play store
now to have a play with my new kitkat!
xTx
EDIT: incidentally, where does it show what bootloader is being used? can't see anything in phone settings or fastboot...

Are you just disabling superSU or are you actually choosing the option to unroot, ie the option in superSU that says:
Full unroot
Cleanup for permanent unroot
If you do this is should remove root and put all /system files back as they were (ie the ones it altered during root).
Also I assume you have not modifed any system apps yourself, eg installed newer versions etc or removed any? If you have then again the update wont work. The update checks lots of files to ensure they have not been modified before it does the update.

[How-To] Update to G900V_OA8 - 5.0 and KeepRoot (2/3/2015)

**You can begin the following process from any build/ROM but you must have both root and Safestrap installed before proceeding**
1. Place the G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Wipe" then "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
3. From the main menu press "Install," then select and install the G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
4. Once complete, from the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
After following the above process your phone will pause on the Verizon splash screen for about 2 minutes before rebooting.
Caution! Users are reporting issues after using TitaniumBackup to delete or freeze unwanted apps, e.g. rotation stops working. Additionally, users have reported that their device runs hotter with severe battery drain after updating to 5.0. The problem seems to stem from the SHealth pedometer, heart rate monitor, and Facebook Messenger running in the background. Consider disabling these items and rebooting to resolve the issue (Verizon Community Forum: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/851032?start=0&tstart=0).
Optional - Enable Native Tethering AddOn:
1. Place the G900V_OA8_TetherAddOn.zip onto your external sd-card.
2. Flash back the G900V_NK2_Stock_Kernel in order to access the Safestrap recovery splashscreen.
3. Flash the file using "Stock" Slot but do not wipe!
4. Last , press "Home", then reboot into Download Mode and re-flash the G900V_OA8_Stock_Kernel. Done!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your Knox Warranty Flag.
2. This process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to OA8 (BusyBox is also pre-installed).
3. Safestrap will no longer function after updating to OA8 5.0. However you can access Safestrap recovery on 5.0 by flashing back the G900V_NK2_Stock_Kernel (reflash the G900V_OA8_Stock_Kernel once you are done using Safestrap).
4. If you do not already have root access you must first flash the G900VVRU1ANCG_Full_Odin.tar (flash in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+)), root with Towelroot (this version does not require internet access), install Safestrap, then proceed with the above process.
muniz_ri said:
**You can Odin back to NK2 at anytime after updating to OA8 5.0**
1. Place the G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. Use Safestrap's "Backup" function to backup your User Data.
3. Next, press "Home" and perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Flash the ROM using the "Stock Slot."
5. Once complete press "Home" then "Restore" and restore User Data.
6. Last, press "Reboot" and reboot into "Download Mode" and flash the G900V_OA8_Stock_Kernel in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+). Done!
The phone will pause on the Verizon splash screen for about 2 minutes after following the above process before completing booting.
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. This Custom ROM process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to OA8.
3. Safestrap will no longer function after updating to OA8 5.0.
4. When flashing the kernel the most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!

Thank you very much for doing this!!!! I can upgrade straight to OA8 from NK2 (stock root)? Im in process of downloading the stock rom files now... Just a quick reminder on how to apply in 0din would be great. And also havent used SS yet ;/
Thanks for saving me from having to figure this out!
Upgraded and kept root. Wish I had safestrap, but oh well--I suppose in the scheme of things it's fortunate that there's even still root. Yes, "fortunate" ...
Best regards.
Thanks for the guide! I was already updated to OA8, but I just flashed a stock nk2 tar (didn't have an nk2 backup) then followed the ncg root method, went back to nk2, installed safestrap, and then followed your guide.

Can't wait to get home from work and try this out. So if I understand this right you can be on any rom base with root busybox and safe strap and this method will update you right? Or do you need to be on NK2 first?

Thanks I am planning on making a video on this process as soon as I can. Probably later tonight. I want to fully understand before I start. I will be interested to see more info about the baseband also. Awesome work by the way. I didnt think that lollipop would get root this quick and since it is downgradable anyone can root which is awesome.

Good Morning,

Could some please inform me if I need ODIN to flash the Kernel, or can I use Safestrap to flash, can I flash the update and boot as normal and flash the kernel later? I ask because I do not have access to a computer and it looks like a long day here at the hospital.

I echo the earlier questions. Is there a way to do this process without access to a PC? I am currently on NI2 with full root and want to get to 5.0 hopefully still with root. The only computer I have is my work computer which will not allow me to install ODIN or Kies since I am not an administrator. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you all for your hard work on all of this stuff.

Okay, beg pardon for being dense, but what do you mean, 'flash'? How? Should I fire up Odin on the computer? Is it an Android Debugging Bridge method of running a script? Do I need to use Odin anyway, to flash that older kernel first? Perhaps just use my S5 to download and install the zip? Am I making it too hard? I know I must be.
I like to follow instructions, and the 1st one has me scratching my head.

Are you rooted on a lollipop rom
Yes. OptimalROM 5.0 by BigBot96. It's working great.
I am a flash junkie from way back, and I thought I was 'done', what with this complex locked bootloader safestrap business. Is this light at the end of the tunnel really is a train? I'm a wreck for flashing different flavors. The Odin back and forth on kernels has soured my interest in the whole flashing thing.
I'm interested. This sounds like a good workaround.

Verision 2 is a fix for those people that flashed the rooting tools on kitkat rom and screwed up safestrap. But as it turned out flashing the original didnt mess anything up so I felt no need to post it.

Gotcha. I just assumed it was an updated version and flashed it. (S5 was on BOC4) and seemingly worked fine. Looked @ both zips, nothing jumped out at me as different. Except md5. Lol
Thank you for responding. You have to be a busy man, and super talented to do all you do with the locked BL. Amazing. Half the ROMs I see have your name. I'd love to see what you could do w/o restrictions.

It will work fine on lollipop rom Basically the only difference is the V2 doesnt put the apks in there own folders inside of system/priv-app folder. On kitkat the apk were not in seperate folders and would not read the apps if they were in their own seperate folders. I then figured if you were on kitkat you already would have safestrap installed to be able to flash a zip. So basically I decided to leave the zip as is so the safestrap zip if flashed on kitkat rom would leave the apk's in their own folder causing the system not to read them therefore causing your original safestrap apk to not be overwritten. Basically what im saying is I wasted my time making V2 but if you flashed it you are perfectly fine!

@jrkruse I am running MOAR ver 6.62 and everytime I try to flash this in SS it keeps saying failed. I checked the md5 and they match. I did install the NI2 Flasher .apk and it works flawlessly. Could the NI2 Flasher .apk be the reason why it fails when I tried to flash this?
Thank you in advance.
EDIT:
Well I finally got it to flash.
Now my question is, when I am done flashing stuff in SS, do I still have to flash OA8 flashable kernel before I reboot out of SS? I know it says that all this stuff is built in, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks.

One last question (hopefully). I am running ARMv7. What version of Xposed should we be running? According to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/official-xposed-lollipop-t3030118 Arter97's sdk21 version. Is that accurate? Basically this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3113463
When upgrading your roms, is a cache / dalvik cache wipe all that is needed? When I went from BA08 to BOG5 I went ahead and wiped data, system, and the caches.
It's my Birthday and this is a wonderful present to start out with.:silly:
@jrkruse You are a damn beast with these ROM's Thanks so much for everything you do here with the community. Are you planning on doing a "dark it up" theme for this? I was really hoping for an all black and white theme. Black settings / white text type of thing. Also, how hard would it be to get a nexus system UI running on this ROM that can use layers? Kind of like the Freedom ROM?

Im glad it works. The hd calling is a pain some people have a hard time getting it to work. I personally have never had an issue with my phone but I have had problems getting it to work on another persons phone so I can relate to the problem.
If anyone downloaded the odin recovery image VZW_BOK3_RETAIL_TAR_IMAGE_WITH_BOD5_BOOTLOADERS.ta r.zip. It was brought to my attention that recovery.img was missing from tar file. This will not affect anything as the recovery.img did not change .I reuploaded it and it now contains the recovery.img so if you want you can redownload.

Well I'm glad you didn't flash it or you would be spending next hour starting over
So I'm trying to figure out the options. Am I suppose to extract it, edit it and put it back in the rom zip and then flash?

I extracted, edited, and then left the options file on the SD card with the zip. After you install it, there seems to be a script that reads the options file and does what you need.
