I've had my Z3 now for a couple weeks, came from a z2.
In my one year with the 2 I had no chips, obviously some scratches and scuffs but no chips.
My Z3 already has two chips on the top bezel one in the front and a smaller one in the back, is this a common issue?
I buy this phone because I hate cases so the dust/waterproofing is the big draw for me.
Sad to see these chips so soon..
Got the same issue here. Very bad though

Protective case is the way to go.
This may sound like comparing apple and oranges...
Imagine your car vs keys...nasty...or rubbing dust-sand on car...that is why people makes-uses protective cases...
Can u post some pictures? I intermittently use a case and sometimes not. I am leaning towards not putting a case on bcos a case seems hiding the beauty but this post bothered me. Do u own the black one?

Actually I think with a protector like that, dust still finds its way in and scratches the phone anyway.

I use a similar transparent case for mine but the feel in the hand with it bare is just awesome. I put it in the case when charging bec people/I might accidentaly kick the wire and send my Z3 flying. Lol

Dunno... My phones are always naked and I never have any issues. There are scratches and what not, but that's what makes it special.
I have foil on the back and not a single spot on the metal body...
I'll never put a case on the I s thing, never did with my z2 either.
tempered glass front and back and that's it.
I also make sure my phones always in a pocket by itself.. Wasn't asking for advice on cases simply asking if this problem is wide spread.
Seems odd these company's change materials from one flagship to the next when the previous one clearly had a more durable finish.

Sorry for off topic...
But nothing in the world happens by itself, if you scratch aluminum (not so scratchproof material) it will show marks. Never heard that on Z3 is used some kind of extra soft aluminum...to put it short...good luck...

You know, I like the metal "stripe" down the back, but can you believe my fingernail scratched it? I don't think that bodes well for the long haul if I can scratch it that easily. And it's a real scratch, not a surface blemish as far as I can tell.
Anyone else already scratch the metal?
Mine is scratched, or scuffed, and I have no idea how it happened. I have been babying this thing.
i assume you took the plastic off of it? cause the plastic is easy to scratch. =) haha.

Yeah I just tried it again and I couldn't either, so I'm thinking it was there already. The reason I scratched with my nail in the first place was I thought I saw some left over plastic or something still there. So I tried to scratch it off.
Instead of putting ugly bulky cases on my devices I just buy a couple spare battery covers on Ebay a couple months after the phone is released. I always wonder why people cover up there nice looking phone with a rubber case. Wonder why the manufacturers just don't make a rubber phone?

hey, it really does happen. i havent taken off the protectors cause they're not peeling for me. lol.
I am very very careful with all of my phones. I have yet to actually scratch one(I always use cases and screen protectors.) I was shocked when after only having installed the battery and set the device down that the aluminum strip had multiple scratches on it. I have no idea how they got there. Went to local T Mobile store and checked their demo unit and NO SCRATCHES . With all of the handling etc no scratches!!! I wonder if it is a quality control issue with the aluminum? I put a case on it within 4 hours of receiving it. I am having to send this one back due to random reboots -signal issues-battery overheating-lcd screen bleeding at edges- so I will be very very careful to see what this aluminum strip on the back is like. I am starting to wonder whether this phone is ready for prime time or not due to all the issues I have found and the many other issues others have found. I believe this can be a giant of a phone if all of the bugs can be worked out.

Well, I exchanged it thanks to the nice folks at T-mobile.
Make sure it's not the plastic on the strip that's messed up, as the first thing they checked was whether or not the plastic was still on.

Mine did that the other day. I looked at it and was like, "OMFG... already!"
Then I noticed the plastic. I wore it for a few days didn't even know it was on there. I recommend leaving it on unless there is a huge scratch on it.

Dropping phones is inevitable. It will SOON eventually happen. I hate to put on cases too, but it's necessary.
I would have just left the plastic on...why take it off? It was literally invisible and you couldn't tell it was even there.
The Galaxy is actually a beast. I've dropped mine so many times and it held up. Don't let the lightness fool us..it's one beast and held it's own on it's fall...impressive.
As they say, the bigger and heavier you are, the harder you fall...
There's a huge advantage of the Galaxy being light...
The worst phones for falls are HTC's...wayyy to heavy...
I agree with dropping the galaxy s. That phone is well built! People may not like the plastic build but it is a very durable phone!
Regarding the G2x, I am carrying it naked it is a good looking phone. Gonna buy the European battery covers when they become available.
Does anybody has got the problem with the ceramic surface which is shown in the following pictures??
Looks like a major problem with the production technology :-(
Looks more like markings of a drop to me.

Yeah looks like a drop
Don't think the Micro Arc protects from drops.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using xda premium
you drop it? micro arc oxidation didn't give protection from drops.
Guys,
When I first read this I thought the same thing that the device had been dropped... however I have just looked closely at my own device and the same thing is happening on the sharp edge on the left hand side
My device has NOT been dropped or mistreated in any way.
"It features aircraft 6,000 series aluminum which is treated with micro arc oxidation by blasting it with 10,000 volts of energy. This gives the metal a ceramic feel and causes it to become five times harder (that’s three times stronger than stainless steel).
The shell of the HTC One S is so durable that HTC claims that it does not even need a protective case. "
The shown devices were not droped. A lot of the One S look like this after one week of safely carrying . Belive me, your devices will show the same failure in approxamitly one or two weeks.
It looks like the brittle ceramic skin can't hold on to the flexible aluminum. Like I said major problem with the production technology.
The nice words of HTC are advertising words.
I am not surprised of the problem and I think it to be idiotic to have such a sharp edge. What else can you expect?
Is there anyone else who experiences the same thing?
Damn.. I really wanted the One S. Yet If the ceramic back is this easily damaged without dropping.. I might not get it. I hate cases.

Same here, this could be the only reason why I won't buy this phone. I never use cases because it makes the phone ugly imo. And I don't know if I want the grey version..
LOL...i noticed some spots up there too after reading this thread and was concerned at first but the white marks could be "rubbed-away" like the marks from fingernails on the back which was shown in a lot of videos ... just try it.
hey, they use this stuff for satelites...

Not working here my friend
How bad is this problem? Do more people experience it?
Also, does it happen to the blue version as well? Otherwise I might change my pre-order to that..
Gosh that looks bad... Does it really go after rubbing as mentioned by jodue??
The blue one got another treatment. There is no ceramic surface which can come off.
There is no way to rub the damage away. The Oxidation to Al2O3 happens only under high temperatures. If the ceramic skin can't hold on the the aluminum it will be damaged permanently
Wow. This is making me reconsider my choice. Got a One S due for delivery tomorrow and might be tempted to send it straight back either for the grey one or for the One X having seen this.

Same here..
Though its not available in India yet , I was planning to buy it when it hits Indian market.
So if any One S user reads this, could he/she share some experiences with the ceramic surface? Even if you do not have any problems at all. It would be nice to find out if this is just a bad product, or a common problem..
I've had mine a few days and not dropped it or anything, it seems to have started on mine though. If it gets any worse over the next couple of days I'll have to take it back, not sure what to do though as I love the phone and don't like it as much in grey/blue
Anybody contacted HTC about this yet?
My mom and dad are coming from old flip phones where they had lanyards to prevent/minimize drops. I'm a little more concerned now that they have something more expensive and prone to damage if dropped. I originally wanted to get them the Diztronic TPU cases, but if there's something out there with a lanyard attachement hole that would be best.

nice! i just wish they made one without the big android logo. i'll show it to my parents to see if they mind it or not.
i may just cut a small hole above the rear speaker grille and loop it through those two holes as well.
This was mentioned in another thread as well, but I'm not enitrely sure that I'd trust a lanyard on a silicone type case. What exactly is preventing it, when falling with a force, from holding onto the case and NOT the device? While the cases are clearly fit to our devices, they aren't exactly strongly hanging on either.
Unless you're using a lanyard on an Otterbox type of case, I wouldn't really trust it to hold more than just the case in a fall.
Dude, Im gonna go out on a limb and say, I think the lanyards are even better protection than a case...maybe not protection, but prevention. (That sounds weird..btw)
I used to put the lanyards on all my phones and, aside from kind of looking like an ass, I cant tell u how many times I prevented a drop, especially when pulling out of my pocket. It's just something to grab on to.. so.. +1

I used to as well, but it was actually on the phone, not the case (though it regularly went through a hole in the case as well, but the lanyard hole was built into phones before!)
I dont trust a lanyard attached to a rubber case
I have a CaseMate Barely There, very sleek,.. and strong, .. and has 2 holes for lanyard attach:

it's visible on the photos
This one 2 little holes for the lanyard too.

Such a shame that a well made case adds so much bulk
If only the One S had some rubber grips down the side, I wouldnt need a case then

Hi there.
I've got the problem that I have to decide between two devices. P9 or H8.
The H8 looks, imo, better and feels better. A bit thicker and heavier. That's what I like, until now I use the one M8, there I know what I've got in my hands
The biggest deal breaker so far is the back side. Made of Glas. I hate this kind of coolness, that seems to be more important than durability.
Additional there is in Germany no warranty for the first months to get front or back replaced if broken.
So what's your experience with the phone? Already dropped it out of hand or pocket? Perhaps landing on back or front? Did it survive everything so far, or was a side broken?
Next point is the price, honor 8 399€, P9 519€....
If it would have a metal back.....
I'm looking forward for your answers!
Greetings
Patrick
You can read something from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/how-to/screen-strong-t3456686 it gets scratched easilly with micro scratches (As EVERY device with back glass. I know this because i had the xperia Z1 and my friend has S6 edge which got scratched too) and I guess as long as you get a case and dont drop it you should be fine.

Thanks for the link.
Well that means that I will call my market and NOT take it. They shall sell it someone else.
A case and a tempered glass is not the problem.
But a crack from a minor drop, and easy scratches and so on, not thank you. That's not worth a saving of 120 euro....
Damned.
..
Well if you dont have both hands left you wont drop it. That's up to you but i also prefer to buy phones in classic shops instead of dealing with sending my phone for repair through mail (in case of RMA). This is why i bought Honor 8 instead of OP3.
It's not just because of my left hands
I also got a child with 1,5 years. And believe me, somehow she always gets her hand on my phone. And yes, I am sometimes a little bit left handed. My M8 fell down several times, always in a case, but never something (noticeable) happened. But it's getting sooooo slow, I need to make factory reset at least once a month to get a smooth phone back. That's annoying. And that's the point why I need a new one. Or want a new one. Depends on the point of view
And after I know that I definitely WILL let it fall down sometimes.... I go for some phone without a glass back. Seems to me a bit better for my money
And yes, I ordered the last phones on Amazon. But we hate each other now, so I will buy it at a store, or a bit cheaper at O2. But never ever again Amazon for electric stuff.
But I leave the point of this thread.
The glass seems to be ok, as long as you use a foil on the front and a case and never let it fall down.
Point one and two ist fine. Point three impossible. So I have to choose something else... Really a bit bad, cause I like the optic....
Point to add to this...
I've had my Honor 8 for a few weeks. I've never dropped it or set it face down. I don't put it in a pocket with anything else.
I've got a LOT of scratches on the face already. It's really disappointing. I looked online and to get a tempered screen protector (which looks like garbage because they don't cover the whole screen) I'd have to wait until mid October. I'm sure the screen will be in horrible shape by then.
I love the phone but they cheaped out on an important part.

Did you check out Amazon for screen protectors? I found a few on there BUT the best one in my opinion is the Skinomi FULL BODY wrap. I'm getting that one plus a clear case and that should protect it to a certain degree. Yeah the ones on amazon ship to me in October, no earlier. I'm pretty disappointed because I don't use cases or screen protectors on my phones, but my Nexus 5X was fine for 8 months so far with no scratches. I've had this one less than a month and it's starting to get bad.
Is the back prone to scratches? Is the phone too slippery to handle?

Yup, minor scratches, visible when you clean the back of your device, the type of ones that you get when you slide your phone on a hard surface.
I own all of the Sony Xperia cases but I only use them if I know for sure I'll be in situations where a drop is likely and I'm not in my daily routine / distracted like a trade show.
In my own experience, which will differ from others, the screen will break with the right fall, case or not,
so I don't use one regularly on Xperia phones. My black XZ Looks fine with regular use/wear tear.
( The way I feel is with a case, I'm not using it as the designers intended, and never get to really see it... and I don't like to babysit phones for their future owners. )

I do exactly the same thing, don't use those covers in regular practice, but every now & then it's going to fall & get damaged, so I don't think much about it.

Forest Blue.
The back and front will show wear no different to most other phones, it's the glossy plastic sides you need to be extra careful with. I'm annoyed that Sony didn't use anodised metal for the sides.
I've just ordered a Noreve case, Ambition black grained leather for external color, and indigo interior lining, to match with Forest Blue.
Expensive, but awesome case!
I'm still ordering those cases, for every phone I buy.
With metallic back fastener for belt clip.
I'll post pics when it come home! (14 days, build on demand).
