[Q] Nexus S flash rom bricked? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
My Nexus S hangs on boot, boot normally only to fastboot and recovery.
In recovery I tried to format /data, /system, but process has no success, in log I see errors:
Code:
Formatting /data...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/by-name/userdata
Error formatting /data!
Formatting /systen...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/by-name/system
Error formatting /system!
Only Cache and Boot partitions formatted successfully.
If I trying "install zip from sd card"->choose zip from sdcard:
Code:
E:Can't mount /sdcard/
On my Mac/Linux system Nexus doesn't recognized by system, on Windows PC in Device Manager it's shown like "Unknown device" without any IDs, so adb/fastboot tools can't help.
R.I.P. my Nexus?

use heidmall and then flash back to stock or wipe the emmc . To do that thake device to bootloader and open your dir where u have kept fastboot files n open cmd there n type fastboot oem lock hit enter then unlock again by fastboot oem unlock, now try to flash a rom.

well maybe some problem with drivees.
just make your very own usb jigg for your Nexus S to boot it to download mode. here is the link.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=smNikt7Rut4
--Ifu are able to access the Recovery then flash a twrp and use it to clear emmc rather take your device to bootloader mode by VolUp+Power and connect to pc n type command fastboot oem lock in fastboot

how can I format sdcard from recovery or fastboot?

my i9020T is frozen on google logo but I want to format the Sdcard before sending it for repair. how can I do that?
I tried formatting it using CWM recovery but everything comes back when "Edit: I reboot the phone into recovery again."
I also tired mounting the usb storage and formatting it through my pc but didn't work!
please help
I have both adb and fastboot working. Are there any commands that I can run to format it from these two? or is there any other way at all?
You could always "fastboot oem lock" I know it formats /sdcard, /data and /cache plus if your sending it back its a good idea to relock it anyway

The sdcard doesn't get formatted when I re-lock the bootloader
Unmount SD card first than:
adb shell
mkfs.vfat /dev/block//vold/179:1

you said that the phone is frozen at google logo. how come you are able to verify ...that everything comes back when you restart? details please.
If you are able to mount the usb, try just deleting the files manually instead of formating.
A second option would be to:
fastboot oem unlock
actually fastboot oem lock doesnt wipe your phone and card; only the fastboot oem unlock function does. so you could try locking and unlocking again.

The phone does not boot up correctly and it stays frozen on the logo after rebooting. By mounting the usb storage again after rebooting, I see everything come back. You are right, I should have explained that in details, sorry.
I tried deleting files manually but didn't work.
I feel there is kind of protection on the sdcard! because even when I push files to the sd using adb or fastboot, they stay there as long as I don't reboot the phone. Once I reboot the phone into recovery again, bang, they are gone and only old files are there.

Bootloop + E:unable to mount /data

Moderator Notes: I was asked to sticky this thread as it seems to be a recurring issue and a couple of fixes are in the posts.
Sorry my bad english am latin.
Hi guys first thread here and i need your help. Here s the thing, i was using my tf700, browsering, and the tablet goes off, i tried start up and a bootloop appears. So i go to Recovery (latest TWRP) and i tried to flash a ROM (latest crombi kk), like always i tried to wipe cache and dav bfore flash it but that proces seems to fail, and a couple of messages like unable to mount /data unable to mount /system appears, first time happening, i never had troubles with the tablet. So i tried to get fastboot mode and run the fastboot erase cach command (i read in a forum dat some guy did that and work for him), so i download the adb fastboot files, i connect the tf700 to my laptop (windows 7 64bit) and a installing drivers message and i wait and the driver that is called Transformer did not install, i dont know where to get those drivers, i found a file Asus usb drivers and bla bla but when i unzip the file i get 3 folders and no .exe or installer. So i tried to continue and i enter fastboot mode in the tablet and connect usb tablet-pc, and now another driver installing message appears, now is a driver called Fastboot, so i wait anda again the driver did not install correctly. So i continue and open cmd and tried the comman for erase cache, and only appears the WAITING FOR DEVICE text. i donw know waht to do, i also tried flashing again a ROM, bt only bootloop, trie again to wipe cache and dav but is only unable to mount /data. Any ideas ????

More likely your data partition got corrupted.
Try wiping it or formatting /data in TWRP to see if that helps? You will lose everything if you don't have backups.

You'll need to manually format it using the terminal in TWRP
Make sure data is umounted then run this command. Make sure you have charged it as well or leave it plugged in.
It can take a number of hours to complete.
Code:
mke2fs -T ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8

You are welcome!
EDIT - somehow the format finally took.. after 5 or 6 reboots.. very strange
okay, i hate to bump this thread. but i have been searching for a few nights and i cannot find a solution. i am having the same problem as OP.
Essentially, my tablet was interrupted mid format. I believe my data partition is corrupted. I can access recovery/fastboot and the tablet accepts commands from my PC. i have TWRP 2.7.1.1 on the tablet right now.
i tried what sdbags said:

this did not work. i got the same "mke2fs 1.41.14 (22-dec-2010)" output, and then the tablet rebooted back into TWRP over again. (data was not mounted, i cannot mount it at all)
some more output from my tablets TWRP console:
Code:
e:could not mount/data and unable to find crypto footer.
e:unable to mount '/data'
e:unable to recreate /data/media folder/
updating partition details...
e:unable to mount '/data'
e:unable to mount internal storage.
e:unable to mount /data/media during gui startup
full selinux support is present.
e:unable to mount /data/,edia/twrp/.twrps when trying to read settings file.
e:unable to mount '/data'
is there another way to fix my corrupted partition?

mke2fs -T ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8

it prompt
Starting Path : /external_sd
Click to collapse
and there is also button "KILL" when I hit enter it prompt : /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 is appereatly in use by the system: Will not make a file system here!
Any advice? (sry for being this big noob!)
Code:
adb shell
killall -19 recovery
make_ext4fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
reboot
Type in those commands via a usb connection to your device whilst it is in recovery.

Probably a Bad Idea - you should unmount /data before formatting. Then it should also not hurt to keep the recovery running.
Unbrick my TF 700t
Accidentally, bricking my tablet
I try Advance and Terminal Command with TRWP at tablet, it did not work
but when I try with command from PC (desktop), it works like a charm. I was able to see internal storage
from that just re install Custom ROM. Thank alot to sdbag
Thanks

i tried downgrading from lollipop 5.0 brasilian to kitkat but it wont go past warning bootloader unlocked screen. when i flash cm from twrp, it gives 3 errors

No Os/Softbricked

Hi Guys,
I have bricked my phone. It is an HTC one X + from Telus. I flashed the rom and boot.img for telus from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235248 and i somehow ended up with no OS. I don't know what exactly is going on with storage sometimes the device shows up on my laptop in bootloader and shows 199 mb storage i have 64Gb device. During adb side load in TWRP it says failed to mount cache and system. Fastboot devices recognizes my phone but when i boot into recovery to try and side load adb it can not detect my device. I am on windows 7 Hboot 1.400. Any Suggestions?
Thank you,
Somewhat updated. I have the same version ruu zip 1.20.661.1 but when i try to flash update ruu zip it gives a signature fail in the conditions mentioned above can i do something? Is there a way to reach S-off in this state?

Try booting to TWRP and connect to PC. See if your device's storage shows up on your PC. If it does, download a ROM to your PC, and drag and drop it in your device's storage. Then flash it via TWRP.

Actually the problem is that the storage is showing 0mb and whenever I am doing anything like flashing other rom or trying to format any of the data ,cache or internal it says unable to mount. Even l have tried QFIL to flash the firmware but it's also failed. Please tell me something.
Is the stock recovery working?
TWRP 3 already tried?
Possible simple solution: but you will LOSE EVERY FILE on userdata.
Step 1: Install TWRP
Step 2: Go to Wipe box
Step 3: Select Advanced Wipe
Step 4: Check "DATA" and tap on "Repair or Change File System".
Step 5: Tap Change File System
Step 6: See original format on file system (EXT4). So turn to other (e.g. ext3) and switch back to original
Now /data is mounted back.
You can also try to erase the partitions using fastboot commands
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata

I have done all these several times and as you have said that change ext4 to ext3 then revert to original. I have done this and it is changed to ext3 but not coming to ext4 again. When I restart my phone then automatically they are changed to ext4.

Try this:
Go to recovery then wipe everything except internal storage and SD card
Install custom ROM
Don't install anything else(SuperSU or gapps)
Reboot
If above doesn't work, the problem is with custom ROM, download a different rom

i solved it. found a thread which helped me. this was the procedure:
Moto g not booting up.
I hope you have an unlocked boot loader.
The first thing you need to find out is that are your phone's partition writable and readable.
1. Download the os you want to your PC rename it to "os.zip" and extract the contents to adb folder (adb folder should be in C drive i.e. C:/adb ). You will get boot. img , system (folder), and others.
1. connect your phone to PC in fastboot mode.
2.In adb type the below commands one by one without quotes. And let one command get processed before typing other.
"fastboot devices" (in response it must show you something like TJ9*****)
"fastboot erase userdata"
"fastboot erase cache"
"fastboot push C:/adb\system /system/"
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
"fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"(flash the philz recovery now)(not required if you already have a recovery)
"fastboot push C:/adb\boot.img /data/"(to verify whether /data is writable or not)
"fastboot push C:/adb\boot.img /cache/"(to verify whether /cache is writable or not)
"fastboot push C:/adb\os.zip /data/media/0/"(to push the os to sdcard to flash it through recovery)
Then boot your phone to recovery. And see the logs, it should show
/system mounted
/data mounted
/sd-ext error mounting /sd-ext
/cache mounted
If it shows /data can't be mounted or error mounting /data. Then go to wipe and wipe /data and /sdcard and then again push os.zip to /data/media/0/. If you don't see this error, then choose to wipe to install a new rom. After this remount /system /data /cache and flash the os.zip or you can flash stock firmware through mfastboot.
This will work definitely.
