Screen turning brownish - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm currently running latest stable blisspop version with the radioactive kernel and the screen seems to get a brownish tint once in a while gets very annoying the methods I've tried is flashing new roms and kernels didn't work at all. Before when I was on stock rom only problem was overheating alot but now it's fixed but with the brownish tint. Is anyone else experiencing this? If so please help me. So far my oneplus one is very enjoable but the brownish tint gets very annoying. :crying:

Can you make a photo of it? Are you sure that there is no water damage?

It's not brown at the moment but it does turn brown after exercising.

Light bleed

So my first Transformer had minor light bleed along one edge of the screen. If I were to gently twist the tablet the bleed would fluctuate. I returned it and found that I had the only Transformer in my area so I could not get a replacement. I ended up ordering online last night.
My question is: Do all it these things have minor light bleed? If not, what are the chances my next one will have it? Or better yet the chances of me finding a remedy?
Can a few of you comment on your experiences with your own tablets please? The way I checked for it was to cover the camera sensor and take a picture. Turn the brightness all the way up and go into a dark room to look at that all black picture I just took in fullscreen mode.

My first two have had more-than-minor light bleed. I should have my third on Monday. If that one has light bleed I'll start to consider giving up on the TF.
All of them have more or less light bleed I think. Mine also have some. You can see it at the bootscreen with the asus logo.
light bleed on ips screens are very common..
I have gone through 3 of them and they all had some light bleed. I don't believe anyone that says they don't have any. They just haven't maxed out brightness, put on a black wallpaper, and gone to a completely dark room.
i have a very minor light bleed- not enough to even worry.
You can check by using the nook book app and seting a book to night read mode.
Did not want to worry about sending it out to take a chance on getting another with minor light bleed or even worse light bleed. as well i had not other probs with it so why chance it.
That doesn't mean anyone else's bleed is not worse...so it is a case by case. choice.
good luck.
I guarantee you your next TF will have some light bleed. Whether it is better or worse, is a different story.
Thank you for all of the replies. I may consider the galaxy 10.1

It is not the fact that it is an IPS screen, but the fact that it is Edge-lit to keep it thin/cheap.

Very much so. Guys...seriously stop whining about the light bleeding. It is not that important. 99% of them do this no matter what tablet you use. So just deal with it and use your new toy.
I don't have any light bleed on my tf. I'm in the UK. I must be lucky !
it really does depend on the amount of bleed though. The one I had was very severe on the bottom (in landscape). It didn't have to be dark at all to see it.

[Q] Screen Quality

I just got a G2X yesterday and it has backlight arterial flow. It's not obvious looking head on but it doesn't take much of an angle to see light peeking around the edges. I've heard this is a "known issue" but would anyone else return their phone for a replacement? How likely is it that I'll have the same problem with the next one? I've had the vibrant since release and I've gotten used to the contrast and color of the amoled screen but I don't think I'm just being spoiled. For $500 I feel light bleed should not be an issue. Black uniformity? Ehhhh not quite as much but still... Anyone care to comment?

It is very likely you would get another phone with same issue.
LG uses a screen texhnology that has that bleed.

Youre new around these parts aren't ya? Lol
Its a very well know issue. Look around this forum and you'll find countless references to it. It comes down to what is acceptable for you? Some people have returned and exchanged multiple times to correct it. For me, its barely noticeable and only on a black screen in a dark room so it doesn't bother me.
Look around the forum and then judge for yourself if you can live with the problem.
I'll probably try a return and if it happens again, I'll just deal and think about an upgrade later on. Like I said I'm used to the samsung screens so this problem is all new to me. Overall the build of the phone feels sturdier than the vibrant. I also like that web browsing is much smoother.
I can deal with that. I don't want reboots and a over heating phone. The screen problems are minimal on my phone.

Have you done a complete hard reset/restore of the phone? Factory data reset?
It significantly cooled down my phone after doing it. Never had a reboot on the phone afterwards, but prior to that I only had one reboot, so I don't think I had a problem
I had installed a bunch of task killer/ battery saver apps on the phone, and the combo screwed things up software wise.....have not touched any task killers since.
I try that when I get a my new memory card.
Thanks.

If mininmal light bleed is your only problem just keep it. Most likely the replacement will also have it. Even with light bleed the screen looked better than the sensations...

[Q] Horizontal banding in display... "ghosting?"

Ok Xoomers does anybody have grey horizontal bleeding on your display?
When the screen is pretty dark the black seems to "bleed grey" horizontally.
I don't know how else to describe it.
I can see it noticeably durring the boot animation, but there are other times it's worse.
It's been there for a while now but I thought it was software related until I noticed it didn't go away no matter what I flashed.
I just filled out the Motorola warranty form and I'll be sending it back. I just wanted to see if anybody else had the same issue.

I don't and have never had this problem. Did you say it just started or has it been like that since the begining?
I first noticed it after I flashed the first tiamat kernel. I thought it might be related for a long time but it seemed like a small price to pay for the added features... and it wasn't really that bad then. Its gotten a bit worse over time.

Do you think it could be related to overclocking the gpu?
Possibly. I don't use any apps to overclock it (like set CPU) but it might be being pushed harder anyway. I haven't set myself back to complete stock yet but I guess I will have to before I send it in. I'll see if it still shows up then.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I did still notice it when I went to the 3.2 rooted update. And that was the stock kernal I think.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
If the gpu got fried, I would think that the damage might be lasting...that's a big "if" of course.
Well, good luck with the return?repair? and keep us posted. I'd like to know what that is.

Lol, mine does that, too. I just thought the display sucked. I am 100% stock. I just got this thing in an acceptable state and dread the prospect of getting something worse as a replacement. If this is not normal, I'll try to get it fixed.

I have an invisible shield (Zagg) and that case that Best Buy sells. I noticed the banding issue too. Turns out it was the impression that the case makes on the shield. Confirmed when I removed the shield.
Sounds like you guys issues may be deeper, though

Smearing issue "fixed" in MF8 - The truth behind it

So, we all knew that the smearing issue happening in our phones happened generally around images/text on a black background.
Many of us thought this could be a software issue but in reality this is an hardware limitation (I know many users already know this but there are some still hoping for it to be a software issue).
I had a lot of issues with the first S4 I bought. Most of the issues were around the back light bleed on the bottom and screen color uniformity. After 3 months battling with Samsung with no end in sight, I bought a new one, this time I choose the white one.
The new one has nice whites and the screen uniformity is close to perfect (or at least it seems so, so far). After checking the screen for some hours, I decided the phone was good to be used and started by updating the firmware to the latest available to me (MF8). After this I went to the settings menu to setup some options and I was amazed to see the smearing was almost gone. I never believed it to be a software issue so I was very surprised by this.
However, my surprise ended very quickly when I check the screen on a dark environment. Samsung did not fix the smearing (as it is a hardware limitation and not software like I always thought) they just changed the background of the settings menu from pure black to a very very dark gray.
This can be confirmed if you go to the settings menu and check the background. Then while in the settings menu, drop down the notification back. The notification bar is pure black, while the setting background isn't. Check this on a room without any lights and it will be very easy to detect.
The whole point of this thread is to inform other people from XDA that Samsung just used a workaround (like everything done by Samsung) to "fix" this issue. There is no way to fix this, this is a refresh rate limitation of the screen. If you want the smearing to be gone you cannot have pure blacks.

i never had any smearing on my s4 so maybe is not a universal issue

It's not fixed and will never be fixed.
Maybe except some dirty trick such as replacing pure black with dark grey at kernel level etc.

changing the background color from black to dark grey wont do anything samsung....
i wish there was a real fix but sadly i dont think there will be because of the way this new amoled works
It's the technology, it's the amoled, it's all about the inertia. Sell your phone If u can't stand it. It can't be fixed. Period. Deal with it or get different phone.

Smearing? Never experienced that in my i9500. Is it a myth?
Sent from my Galaxy S4 using XDA app
Some people seem that they don't care enough to even notice that the smearing even exists ...
Also in settings it was a bit annoying but i prefer to have pure black if that's the only disadvantage because i don't think it will proc in anything else other than scrolling because it won't need faster refresh rate ...
I'm not an expert in any form on this kind of things but when i upgraded my phone and saw no smearing in the settings i was first surprised but since i ve read that this is a hardware issue and i double checked it to notice that is a placebo ... but since my phone works as it should and doesn't annoying me with the things i want it to do i don't care that is that this "fix" it's just a cover to the problem and not an actual solution

Your phone has smearing as well. They all do. Not seeing it yourself doesn't make it a myth
wanna see smearing? get some white yellow blue or something like that walpapper (stock blue is perfect), install MX Player from Market.
Get to menu, scroll to the page when the icon of MX Player is, now quickly swipe from right to left, you'll see that black part of icon is extending for maybe 0,1 sec...
That's the smearing, but many of users are pissed with this minor thing, which I can barely see.

So you knew that there will be smearing issue before you bought S4???
And also quite surprised so many people haven't able to observe this issue in their phones.
Yes, I knew that, It's still so tiny tiny issue comparing to those on HTC ONE or Xperia Z (I had Z and One before S4).
Everybody should just download screen adjuster and up the contrast to 13 or 15
That way it will still be very very dark gray looking black with almost non existent smearing. Problem (kinda) solved!
THANKS

Screen has Yellow Tint

I bought 16gb Version in India and i found my screen to have a yellow Tint, is it natural or should i ask for replacement? Everything else is fine. Please reply quickly. Thanks.

And can anybody else please check their clock app and tell me if its a dark blue or purple as in my case. Will help me a lot, thanks .

The same problem here too, screen shot on laptop seems blue , but its purple when i see it on my phone.
And also i just figured that the clock app shades change depending on time, so i changed my time to your screen shot time and i compared, its blue on the laptop but purple directly.
so this is general occurrence i assume.

Well, if you're finding any issues with the display you can ask for replacement. They will replace it without any questions.
Talking about the yellow tinge, I am having no such issues on my Moto G. The clock however, changes its color according to the time. Are you seeing the yellow tinge throughout your usage? If yes then get a replacement.

Well in that case, here is my video review. Have a look. youtu.be/b7YPJJHafJY
I have come to peace with it now it definitely is warmer in colour reproduction, but I don't want to risk getting another defective handset over this, the mobile has been great so far, with insane battery i must say. screen on time reached 5.3 hours with average to above average usage. And about 4 hours with heavy usage. Definitely a keeper. thanks for the replies mates.
can close the thread now admins. Or is there an option for me to close it myself?
Just compared my wife's Moto E to my Moto G. Both US. Ran screen test app. The G definitely has a Yellowish cast in the whites and greys. And the colors are different on the same wallpapers.

The yellowish tint is because of adaptive display. In nexus 6 you will find a pinkish tint on the screen. Some phones of motorola have this issues.
