Flash Verizon S3 to Total Wireless S3 - APN settings - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello,
I am looking to move my Verizon S3 to a Total Wireless plan. I cannot seem to find any APN settings to enter for it to work on Total Wireless.
Honestly, I cannot seem to find any info on re-purposing a Verizon S3 to a Total Wireless S3 phone. The only difference between the two versions are that the Total Wireless version does not support 4G.
Any suggestions on how to do this so I don't need to go spend $250 on another S3 from Total Wireless?

Have you confirmed the phone will work on there network?

No, it won't work according to their page because it supports 4G. Hence, why I need to flash it to deactivate the 4G so that it can be activated. Same kind of thing to get a Verizon phone to activate on Page Plus, etc. Just can't find any info to do it for Total Wireless.

It will not work on the Total Wireless (sister company) network because of 4gLTE. It will work on Straight Talk. Straight Talk uses the Verizon tower to continue support for the BYOD. I have my phone on that network right now with everything working. I am running a custom ROM rooted so I can place APN's. Im running PAC-ROM, came from Mastamoon's CM. Not saying Mastamoon's CM wont work, I just decided to switch my ROM.
Turn Data Roaming - On
Preferred Network - Gloabl
System Select - Im on automatic
CDMA Subscription - RUIM/SIM This is a standard mandatory change on LP Roms with the S3)
APN, follow my link below for my notes.

How I fixed it.

Thanks, but I'm well aware it won't work on Total Wireless without flashing or changing settings, hence the reason why I posted the thread.
I found someone that can do it, but wants $60 to make the Verizon S3 work on Total Wireless.

Never found anything for this. Anyone have any ideas?

I would try to query different areas of XDA (of course, that applies to your phone) as well as other forums like Phandroid, Android Central, etc...
Remember that when you query, use 1 or more keywords (sometimes you will find your lead/answer with just 1 or 2 words) and be sure to leave out the common words/letters (for example: a, or, and, the, etc...) will provide you results that can have one or more of the commons only. This also goes for search engines like Google and others.
Here's a little fun fact. When you query, using "quotes" on one key word(s) will emphasize the "quoted" word(s) in your search results. This works probably half the time (give or take).
I hope this helps!

Jedis - who did you go to for a $60 flash to total wireless? Is this a common service?

Total Wireless now supports 4G. Any ideas of the APN settings I need to use to get data working? Texts and calls work. No data.

Is there an app? With straight talk there is one to setup apn settings. I know with GSM unlocked phones like the nexus 6 for instance you just have to register it with the network

Not sure. Their support did not mention one, but they're known for being less than helpful.
Do you know what the name of the app is for Straight Talk? I believe they are all run by the same company.

[Q] Is it possible to add CSC from SGS to SNS (Nexus S)?

the phone is working fine
except instead of showing the Name of my cell phone provider, it only shows the tower ID number.
I was supposed to see:
Wind (Home)
or
Wind (Away)
they show up properly on my SGS and XT720
Ironically, with the SNS, i did not even have to configure the APN settings, it automatically got both the MMS and Internet APN settings.
kinda funny if you ask me, it knows the Wind internet and multimedia settings but can't report the tower names
if i use the Wind (Away) towers i get charged roaming
so ideally i'd like to only use Wind (Home) similar to Tmobile Zones towers for my 3G and voice, to not see a huge bill at the end of the month
This thread on Howard Forums might interest you if you haven't found it already. Seems like the difference is that Wind sends out number instead of name if I read it correctly.
You might be able to edit the eri.xml file to deal with this, as instructed in this thread on xda for AOSP roms.
As far as CSC goes, I don't think the NS uses that. I've never seen it mentioned in discussions about other devices besides the Galaxy S line of phones using Samsung ROMs.
P.S. - be careful messing with the frameworks apk. I made a bad edit to the one on my i9000 once and it wouldn't boot. Easy enough to fix by replacing with a good copy, though.
Thanks for those 2 links
I'll check them out.
That's very helpful, if it's a simple edit of the file
I've been busy jumping between the 3 forum, and fixing the SGS i9000m to work properly, which i just got back yesterday, and it pretty much died on me right away after upgrading to JL2 and restoring only the backup for user app+user app settings (no system app/data restored)
Heh I've been wondering about this too... but seeing "302490" instead of "Wind (Home)" doesn't really bother me that much... I'll know if it's Wind Away when the number is different lol.

Yeah, that's what some in the Howard Forums say; as long as they know they're not roaming. When you're on Wind Away, does the "roaming" indicator show? The framework shows there's a flag for it.
I would be with Allgamer myself; I'd like the proper carrier name to show.
well New Year eve is here
and the "long weekend" is starting soon
if i have time after the parties and stuff to work on the quick fix, i'll upload the file to share for the rest of the XDAers on Wind Mobile
There's an easy fix for that.
On the dialing screen, dial *#*#4636#*#*
Phone information->choose WCDMA only (Wind runs on 3G only).

Assuming it actually works...
Looking forward to hearing the results, even though the issue doesn't affect me.
i spend time trying a few this morning and nothing....
because there is only 1 SPACE !!!!! available to Hex Edit a letter into the xml file
i tried the other method they mentioned further down into the topic, and it was not compatible
good thing i was flashing my phone a few times.
running TW ROM right now.
so in the end, it is Do able, but we only get 1 letter out of it.... which IMO is worse than seeing the full row of numbers 302490

Got Throttled. I got help.

Just make a new apn and select it and it will work. For the ones that don't know. The PTA apn lets att restrict your speeds. This apn can't be throttled.

I followed the instructions regarding the settings and after selecting this apn, I am able to make and receive calls as well as access to the web....does this mean I am good to go regarding the ability to avoid throttling? LTE hasn't reached where I live yet but I am trying to read up on issues concerning it.
I noticed another wrote that "it didn't work"....Does that mean phone is pretty much unusable as far as data and calling....
No if u are able to access web and call u are fine. So when u get throttled just switch to this apn and u will not be. I'm not in a lte area but they got me. So I switched and working fine.

Oh btw..I did a speed test and I'm getting 4.5mb download speeds...is that 4g or does it just default to the 4g icon due to my new 4g sim card that I had to upgrade?
The apn worked when I was in a non lte area but when I entered an lte area, I wasn't getting any data signal until I switched back to the default apn in which I was back to yh
Throttled speeds. . Any ideas on how to fix this?

note as phone

Can someone tell me how the note operates as a phone? I mean, could I just pop in my SIM (tmobile or ATT) and have it accept data and voice? I guess "normally" I would just buy a data plan and it would only accept data, right?
I know this sounds like a dumb question, I guess I can't see why they would include voice capabilities with this? Who will put this thing up to your ear (I realize there might be some that would use bluetooth etc), but it still seems like this wouldn't replace your phone. I'd bet most people that have this will already have a phone. Why would anyone pay for voice on this as well?
Anyone have some insight on this?
The Note 10.1 seems to have an excellent speaker phone (at least the sound seems to be good) and yes, of course normally you will use a headset with it.
In this review they actually demonstrate the phone function - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dseMZFyf6go&feature=player_detailpage#t=343s
This is my first tablet with 3G so I ate be wrong about this but here it goes. I dint think most other 3G tablets have regular phone features like voice or sms/mms. They are ment to be used with a separate data plan. With the Notes ability to use these features I can just pop in my sim card when I want data and I will still get incoming calls or texts where as a tablet without those features would make me miss them.

So, are you saying that if I get a data plan from att or tmobile I should be given a phone number people can call me on?
I plan on getting the 3G version, and probably go with ATT. However, I have a tmobile phone. I am assuming I'd use my note for data and if I want to make calls, I will have to switch SIM cards to take advantage of the voice features.
It would be nice to know if they could be easily "joined" via bluetooth to an phone (I have an S3) and make phone calls or data that way. Basically, I am trying to figure out the best way to utlilize my voice and data plan when I get this in conjunction with my phone.
Thanks for your help.
In opposite to the Tab 10.1 (N/2), the Note 10.1 can be used for making phone calls. Similiar to the Galaxy Tab, this works either handsfree or with the supplied headset.
Of course, you need a sim supporting this. In Germany, most people have a normale sim with voice and data plan, pure data plan sims are in my eyes rare.
So in fact, you just plug in the sim and if it supports voice, you can call voice.

No. A regular data plan from att or tmobile will just give you data. I'm talking about taking my phone's SIM and using that in my tablet. I already pay for data and att doesn't care what device I use it on (As long as it is only on one device at a time). This way when I need mobile data on the Note I can have it without getting another plan, and not miss any calls or texts
works awesome as a phone, love it.

lol ? or you could just edit the file properly. I just edited it for TMobile unlimited hotspot for you. It works great for me. I am hoping you have the same luck. This file comes from OOS 9.5.11 and is edited by me. Place the file in /System/etc
So we are talking about unlimited data usage?
What benefits can this bring? Usually I change the phone every 3 years, because industry growth rates do not allow changing every year. However, oneplus 7 is so good that it changed its 5 version ahead of schedule

I've never found a list. Carbon ROM is the only one that works for me with my Verizon MVNO. The Dev explained to me that Verizon is a "black box" and developers have to best guess to make things work.
Several years ago I moved from Sprint (CDMA like Verizon) to then Metro PCS (GSM) when I first came to XDA because of the incompatibility of many roms. Because most the world uses GSM... I would ask someone who knows exactly what to do to make Verizon work and try and master whatever that may be. Back in the day (NexusS4G days, Nexus 5) people who used Sprint, we had a zip we'd flash at the end of our installation and it would set the proper apns needed for us to have data. But I believe there is more to it with Verizon....
I have a OnePlus 6t now and I see many people with same issues and they have no data. Something with the phone not being able to read the sim card from what I've heard... I sent someone in 6t forums directions on how to swap apns-conf.xml and he said it didn't work and told me it was something else ...
If ypu want you can try this:
Save your apns-conf.xml located in your /system/product/etc/ while you are on Carbon rom and have working data. Then when you flash another rom delete the two existing files that are in the rom that has no data. So delete both the apns-conf.xml located in /system/product/etc/ and also located in your /product/etc/ and replace only the one in /system/product/etc/ with your working apns-conf.xml from Carbon rom that you had data working on. Then set permissions on the one you pasted in to 0644 using root explorer or whatever root file manager you use. After that go to settings/networks and internet/mobile networks/access point names/ and select the three dot and select "reset to default." If this is indeed an APN issue this will fix it and give you working data. Give it 2-3 minutes after you reset the APN to default. If you see LTE/5G pop up in your status bar, reboot and you'll be good from then on. That is, "if" this is an APN issue. If not then at least you tried something. I used this method MANY times on different devices and different carriers over the years and it always worked for me when I have no data after installing a rom. I'll attach some pics of permissions 0644 and all to this post. Credit for this goes to spaceminer where I first discovered this apn xml data fix.

Several years ago I moved from Sprint (CDMA like Verizon) to then Metro PCS (GSM) when I first came to XDA because of the incompatibility of many roms.
Thanks for the info. I'll copy and paste to my computer so I'll have it if needed. Then I won't be scratching my head at two in the morning " what did that guy say..."
Right now everything works fine, but in the future, who knows?

From what I've researched so far it seems the issue only really relates to A11 and will be fixed when OOS is out of closed beta. Verizon is terrible about relinquishing control for devices they don't even own anymore. I've tried a few A10 roms and haven't really had any trouble. Supposedly KangOS got verizon data working on A11 but when I flashed it wasn't working, so maybe an older build.
