So i just received my Z5 (black) on Friday and while taking some low light and night photo shots I noticed a blue/purple tint to the top left corner of images. Testing the camera against a black background confirmed the discoloration. Photos were taken 16:9 8mp in auto mode. I have attached to samples taken while the camera was covered to produce the tint. Anyone else experience this?
Edit: Flash was off for both of these. The first photo was ISO 6400 and the second 12800
That's commonly seen when the ISO used is too large, usually in low light photos. Like there's some light coming out of the camera sensor. Could you check the ISO on those photos?

I updated the first post with the ISO values. I didn't see this behaviour with my Z3+ so I was curious as to hardware versus software problems.
Well, my Z3+ does the same if I try to shoot in a completely dark room (I was trying to make my own black wallpaper lol) . It's caused by the high ISO. You could shoot in manual with lowest ISO in a dark place to get pitch black output.

Interesting. Do you get more tinting on one side of the image versus the other? Even with the high iso the output colour is not random and seems concentrated on the upper left side. Just want to make sure it isn't a sensor/lens issue. Thanks for the reply!
Try Night portrait and Night scene. They both use much lower ISO (especially Night scene).
Same issue plagued the Z3 sadly, looks like no improvement in this regard.
I've seen the tint in many samples over the past few weeks

I did a 180 degree test earlier on Z3+ to make sure it's not a lens/sensor issue. Z5 does the same. You also need to make sure it's equally dark on both sides. Try it out. FYI, high/12800 ISO is not a bad thing. It's actually the best feature for shooting in 'low' light.

Just by testing the camera in different orientations (i.e., 180 degrees between pics) it seems like the brightness is not the same on both sides. While rotated 180 the bottom right corner exhibits the same slight blue tint as the initial top left corner.

Just don't use SA when shooting low light photos. It ramps up the ISO way too high that causes that and also over exposes a shot and blurs the photo because of too much noise. Try testing it in a moderately lit (artificial light) room and try SA, manual with different ISOs and Night Mode on scenes.

12800 ISO is not a bad thing, unless you're using a phone. Cameras on mobile, including the Z5, are just way too small compared to real cameras with large sensors and better hardware that just can't fit (yet) in a phone. Sony thought they would win the low-light mobile phone photography contest by introducing that insane high ISO, everyone else thought otherwise. It overexposes (way over) the shot and blurs everything to reduce too much noise. That's in the auto mode, which all tech review sites use in their reviews and that's why the Z5 (since the 12800 ISO was introduced in Z3) gets trashed in their comparison. At least you could still shoot a proper low-light photo using the manual controls by controlling the exposure and ISO levels, or choosing night mode.
Low-light means low light - you need high ISO. There's no way around high ISO in low-light when you're shooting from mobile phones. Using that, you can take shots from Xperias with relatively higher details in 'low' light.
What you're saying is a entirely different thing. The camera sw abuses the ISO when it shouldn't - those are moderate/challenging lights. That's not low light & it's a different discussion.

Could anyone post a pic of their Z5's performance with the lens covered? I was going to exchange mine but the seller provided a picture taken using another in-stock Z5 that shows the same issue (strong blue tinting on the left side) at 12800 iso. Just curious if it could be fixed with an update to the camera or if it is a permanent hardware issue.

Same issue here. Theres going to be a bit no matter what, even what schecter posted I can still see the tint in a dark room

The Sony Xperia Z5 is a product in japan and its all feature is outstanding that is why i think there is no reason to be worried .Use the best product and love you very much .
Is this a hardware or software issue? I have a similar problem with my Z5 Compact, and am thinking whether I should exchange it...
i have the same issue too, no matter how i adjust i am unable to get rip of the purple tint in auto or Manual mode while taking a pitch black picture. at first i thought is my case but i remove the case still the same problem. day time takes great pictures
When I'm in bright sunlight the display get's washed out. As far as I know this doesn't happen in normal bright fluorescent light. Anybody else experienced it?

Same thing happens here, your phone tells you that it is optimizing the display for direct sunlight.
Its an adaptiv display feature.
It has a special super-bright mode when in bright sunlight, but that's the trade-off. Try going to Settings / Display and choose something other than Adaptive display and see if that stops it.
I have my settings on Photo and have same thing, it is really annoying i wish Samsung could have an option/toggle to enable or disable this feature. At first i thought it's a bug with a phone.

In outdoor situations at a sunny day there is no problem, with most phones but the S8+ has a really good camera but if i try to take a picture when the sun has set and the light is low the software makes the pictures really fuzzy. The faces are washed out (i am aware that the software is trying to reduce the noise) and its not that great at auto mode. I took great low light pictures with the manual mode and this is something missing on the nexus 6p and pixels but if i want to take a quick picture at low light i cant start setting up the manual mode i just want to take a quick photo. So at this point my question is, is there any way to install the google photo apk with the hdr+ mode? I dont really know if something like this would work or if its even possible, but i really miss the hdr+ from the google phone.

I also came from the 6p and gotta admit I was totally amazed with the 6p's camera in both low light and day time shooting. I still have not taken much pictures with my s8 plus yet, so I can't really compare the difference in an night out experience, but hope to soon. From around the house shooting the camera seems good, I want to say slightly better than the 6p in low light. I really like the zero shutter lag of the s8 though, even though I had the ZSL mod on the 6p. Your pictures do look pretty fuzzy and not clear on the s8 though. Probably a dumb question, but it's your camera lens clean?

Never had the 6P but I have the Nexus6 and I must say for a phone going on 3 years old it still has a nice shooter (using an app called Manual Camera).
Semi pro skill set with photography here, never liked auto anything.
Your pictures look exactly like mine and I too am disappointed with the S8+ auto Camera shooting. I am coming from a LG G4 and my pictures were amazing on that camera. I would frame them people were shocked they were from a camera phone. My S8+ does great in bright sunny light, but in side/low lighting conditions the pictures are very washed out/lack detail.
I'm also feeling the same. The auto settings are so shonky, my LG G3 had better auto settings. When there's proper lighting it's crisp as anything, also with the flash. When it's low light like this, mine look exactly the same, it's like they have the skin smoothing on the selfie camera but for everything... Also!!!! I've noticed that there still seems to be a bit of grain / not so sharp even in light. I really do feel like my G3 produced better images. Haven't played with manual but like... I feel like I shouldn't have to. Auto should be banging!
I'd have to agree. My iPhone 7 plus beats this camera when it comes to quickness, ease of use, and consistency. Not too impressed.

ye i double check it every time i run in a situation like that. I am not using the fingerprint sensor tho but i still check if its clean and in those situations you see its 100% clean

as i said earlier the manual mode is better but you cant tell people or friends "wait let me set it up" so i can take 1 picture. the point of the auto mode is to take quick good picture. You are totaly right about the manual mode, ive taken very very good pictures with it but its not fast to set it up, eventualy you will lose the moment
Iphone camara sucks, buy tk each their own. Maybe i got a good S8+.

Try taking the SAME shot with both phones. Can't say much looking at totally different shots. I do notice the S8+ tends to overexpose a little bit. So if you were shooting in the dark, it would try to get a brighter exposure resulting in a higher ISO and lower quality images.

Exactly trying to compare totally different pictures taken in different places under different conditions is pointless.
I had a 6P for a long time and it had the best camera of any nexus device by light years but just doesnt compare to the S8 camera.
I had a note 5 at the same time as the 6P and the note 5 camera eas better than the 6P so....

As they aim to replace the traditional point-and-shoot camera, it would be nice to have similar pre-set manual mode settings remembered. Then you could set up your perfect "in the pub with mates" manual settings and switch to it quickly without all the sillybuggers of camera phone manual mode faff.
Edit: As an afterthought, what you could do is utilise an app I use called SyncMe. What this does is automatically copy all new photos from my phone to a specified folder on my NAS every day when I connect to my home network and plug in a charger. You simply set the phone to take RAW, and add a filter to this rule to MOVE (instead of copy) any RAW file extensions so your phone doesn't fill up.
Then, if you ever find yourself wanting a nice photo of a night out but the Jpeg is bad, you can hop onto your network and find the RAW equivalent and get editing.
Use pro mode for low light. The higher the iso, the brighter the picture but will leave your photo more grainy.
The lower the shutter speed, the brighter your photo but will require a steady hand or a tripod, and a still target.
Combine these with some editing.

This is what I get Everytime I try to take a shot indoor. Little movement and the photo comes out very blurry. I don't get why reviewers didn't notice this. Wasn't getting this result in the 6P.

I've also come from IPhone 7+ and that camera seemed so good compared to this but the s7edge camera seemed the best I've seen but this doesn't seem as good as them
In poor lighting so everyone will take pictures, in general a normal camera

Have you tried to use Tracking AF? Also try lock the focus on the subject and then let it move and take the picture and see if its still blurry not sure but you might have defective camera sensor

Hi,
My Note 20 ultra has some Display problems.
When my phone is on a lower brightness and Adaptive(120Hz) refresh rate setting on a grey background, I can see all sorts of funky horizontal lines across it.
(except gallery - i think the refresh rate reduce to 60hz in gallery automatically so in gallery you can't see the problem).
I see them big time on settings screens or Apps where there is a gradient of gray.
see the attached Picture. Two pics with 120Hz(Adaptive) Display Refresh Rate and others with 60hz!
Note: the problem seems to be more than real in these pictures because of camera, with eyes you can't see such this bad!
Any one here with this problem?

You have a defective display get it replaced ,& no this isn't normal with oled screens
You can see the lines with your eyes or just with the cam?
Normal for a cam image... try decreasing shutter speed, a lot.

I can see with eyes but very rare, just when the screen is on 120 Hz and lowest brightness. On 60Hz everything's ok!

Is that in a completely dark room?
If you're not using a incandescent light source for room lighting that may cause it.
Otherwise regardless of screen brightness or display frequency it should be not be showing anything except what's being displayed.
At that price it better be spot on.

The horizontal lines is static, not moving. And you can see just in Gray Backgrounds with lowest brightness and 120hz.

Hi. I just got my Note 20 Ultra and I have the same problem. I see streaks in my photos. If I switch between 60 and 120Hz, sometimes the lines disappear, but not always.

Not good. Was thinking maybe background LED lighting might be "strobing" it.
Probably a firmware issue but could hardware is my guess.
Maybe software... try clearing the system cache on boot menu, a hard reboot and clearing graphic driver data even if it reads zero. If you have PD MDM use that to clear instead of in Settings.
Mine does the same. I think they all do it some people just don't notice it.

Do you normally use that low a level at night?
I have excellent center vision; my 10+ goes dimmer than I will ever use. No flicker or color anomalies though.
It may be the physical hardware limits of the device or they may eventually patch a firmware flaw.
They also may have inadvertently set the lower limit of the brightness too low...
If it doesn't effect night usage I might ignore it.
Samsung can be notoriously slow at fixing firmware/software glitches in their products.
Amazingly even after almost 2 years they are still patching both firmware and software on the original Buds. They now perform much better then a year ago. Crazy.

Frankly it's always visible since I know what to look for. when I'm not looking for the it, it's when it's really annoying to see.
I have a note 9 and a 10+ which I still daily drive both on their own sims. The difference in screens is very noticeable. The 120 hz mode is the problem. Put the phone in full resolution and it's way better.
The screen on the n20u is less vibrant than my other notes, but it's more color accurate so I like that.

That's seems annoying. Guess using a lower frequency at night be the easiest solution. Sammy throws out a lot of betaware that needs more work...
On the 10+ Pie the display settings are goofy for screen mode. If you set it to "vivid" it's way oversaturated. Natural is the best setting but you have little ability to dail it in much more than that.
I'm curious about these controls on the 20U and Q.
Any improvement?

Honestly don't notice a difference switching between the two in n20u, on note 10+ yes big difference.
So I tried the green slider mod setting where you dial it all the way down under advanced display setting.
Its not much of a difference, it does reduce it a little. The screen becomes purple dominant obviously but the green fringes still show.

On the 10+ the color sliders are weak too.
A 3rd party overlay app works but is a pain.
Overlay apps won't work with Q though I believe.
Rather sloppy of Goggle and Samsung... this is an ongoing issue with Androids; no color calibration
Fortunately the 10+'s aren't too bad but it the color blind coders need to get up to speed...
Androids need color calibration.
OLEDS are horrible sceens, but similarly to screen-to-body ratio we have brightness race now, a useless but review-happy attribute which does help your eyes only in very rare situations. Otherwise it makes your eyes tired with pulsing. For use in dark these screens are bad. You will also got ugly backbleeding as a bonus. Horror movies are unwatchable.
I have this with each phone nowadays, and there's no escape from it. I can see the lines on Note20U too, of course. It even blinks when you're tired. The backbleeding is rather uniform tho and not so intensive.
Funny as I use mobile 90% in dark, i prefer dark mode, and i like dark movies Killer trio.

OLEDS are horrible sceens, but similarly to screen-to-body ratio we have brightness race now, a useless but review-happy attribute which does help your eyes only in very rare situations. Otherwise it makes your eyes tired with pulsing. For use in dark these screens are bad. You will also got ugly backbleeding as a bonus. Horror movies are unwatchable.
I have this with each phone nowadays, and there's no escape from it. I can see the lines on Note20U too, of course. It even blinks when you're tired. The backbleeding is rather uniform tho and not so intensive.
Funny as I use mobile 90% in dark, i prefer dark mode, and i like dark movies Killer trio.

It's not the OLEDs that are the issue as the display on my 10+ is the best display I ever used.
It's the firmware/drivers and perhaps the >60 hz hardware. It's very disconcerting that it's not sorted out yet.
Well that's Samsung. It may be fixed. Samsung just pushed out yet another Buds+ firmware update today. Wow. They keep trying, I'll give them that... the best the Buds+ ever sounded.
So there's hope. The bad news is it will most likely need to be a firmware update if it is fixable.
Flashing the Buds is a lot easier (and less risky) than patching the bloody phone firmware.
Based on issues like this and the abomination that Q and above are, I may simply buy another backup 10+ 512gb phone running on Pie and call it good for the next 3 years.
Both Samsung and Goggle/Android have been practicing drop the ball like drooling kindergarten ftards lately

For some reason, in low light i get a purple tint around my pictures , even with gcam , and with the stock camera , night mode pictures are awfull, its completely purple, anyone else with this issue aswell ? Or is it something normal

some sample pics, had to figure out how to post them since i havent really posted anything before
its really obvious in the first image, you can also see faint purple tint in the 2nd image, sometimes its the whole pictue that is purple if its completely dark when i use night mode

Yeah, I got some purpling too on the viewfinder in low light situations. And the resulting photo is purplish where it should be black. I tried a different gcam, twichaya and loaded the twichaya2.xml and that took better pictures with no purpling.

i see , so it is software related then , because i have the exact same thing as you said, i was curious if it could be hardware related , i'll see if i can find that gcam
