[Q] Nexus 5 high pitched noise when screen is on - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got this nexus 5 about 5 days ago and I recently noticed that when the screen is on there is a very quiet but definitely present noise coming from the bottom of the phone. At first I was worried that there was something very wrong but it's so unnoticeable that I'm actually starting to think its normal. I can't even hear it if the phone is in my hand, I have to bring the bottom right to my ear to make it out. Another reason I think it could be normal is because everything else on the phone works fine. I know there are some other threads about this but none of them seem the have a real conclusion. So can anyone tell me if they experience this too, and is it normal or should I be worried? It really doesn't affect my experience that much because I can't even hear it unless I really try.

The video of the problem doesn't work.

Bump

Ttt

Maybe you just have really good ears? Mine doesn't do it.

[Q] New Nexus 5 Rattle

I have the newer updated version of the Nexus 5, and I have now noticed a rattle.
My dad has the Nexus 4, and he found a rattle, which made my more conscious about mine. So I've found that I now have a rattle too. I love the phone, and I know it's only a small problem, but should I RMA it? It's only about a month old now.
Would Google let me RMA it for this? I also think the vibration motor may have a slight problem as it does make an almost tweet sound when I type, and I have read that, that is a fairly common problem too.
Does anyone else's new model Nexus 5 rattle still?
I have tried holding the power button etc. but it still happens, so it must be internal.

If your holding the power button and it rattled than its probably the ois of the camera which is normal. Or it could be volume buttons. The vibration is it really loud? Or just a tiny noise. If it's really loud and annoying RMA it but if not then you don't need to and shouldn't bother. Also there's an RMA thread. Check that out.

OIS camera module is supposed to move but you really have to shake the phone to hear it from what I can tell. Does anyone actually ever do that to their phone?
You can try to RMA it, but remember there's always a chance that you might get a phone with more rattle or a different issue. Although this shouldn't happen it could so if it's not bad I would just keep it. I RMA'd my original one for the rattle issue because it really was loud. Whenever I would slide down the notification bar I would hear it rattle or if I tapped any of the toggles in the top corner. It's really upto you though. From your OP it doesn't seem like it's that bad.

static sound coming from bottom or right hand speaker. Thread immediatly 404's on ge

Is any one having static come out of their shield tablet? I can really hear it whenever I'm using it on a table. Its reflecting nicely. The geforce forums 404 me immediately when I post about the problem. I don't know how big an issue this is, but considering the cracking issue and now this, I'm just about fed up with it. Ive only ever used the stock charger and its ota updated to L. Stock everything. I'm going to call them and see how long I'm going to be without my tablet now.
Please let me know how that goes. I have the same issue with mine, no cracking in the body but I do have the audio issue. Doesn't bother me that much but its noticeable
Its either coil noise or a fan... Does the shield have a fan onboard? Its only noticable when its very quite and im holding it on a table. I called nvidia, they want me to send them a video of it. Its kind of hard to do that, considering its relatively low. Im still afraid that this tablet is going to crack. The battery is pretty bad as well. Right now, i have to void warrenty for root privlages too. Nexus 9 looks better, cept no external storage. Ugh.
Oh this bad boy is going back. I can hear it now over the on board fans of my laptop.
I notice this too out off the same speaker usually when I'm in Chrome. Now there is no sound coming of this speaker, though I still hear the faint static though. Is there a setting somewhere I may have inadvertently hit to turn the speaker off?

Rattle noise

Hi
Just bought a mate 7 and absolutely love it. One issue though. It rattles when shaken, as if something loose inside. Sound comes from the top ear speaker area. Any one else notice this??

I test it and I have that noise but it.s not loud, i must take the phone near the ear to hear it. I think it's normal.
Me too. Don't know what it is...
Good to know it's not just me. Must me normal then
Me too, but it is the first time I Have heard it...you really need to have your ear close..
Sounds like it comes from the upper part of the phone around the camera..
Don't think its the camera lens...sound more like a metal part moving about...I notice it when receiving or making calls. Bothered me a lot initially, but I'm over it..
Its the camera lens, it is fairly common and normal.
No need to worry, rattling occures cos of how the camera is built.
I have the same noise on my mate 7, i was worried at first but now i kinda dont care to be honest it works, and i have no problems for almost 3 months now.
I have the same thing, but its really really hard to hear... Even in a quiet room. Don't think it's a problem.
I only want the best, so give me what I want! BMW!!!

Shaking noise from rear camera area

Hi!
So I've been using my Mi 4C for like one and a half month now. Since day one a noticed a shaking sound from the rear camera area whenever I put in on its back on a table or simply tap the area, is anyone experiencing the same? It is as if some part in the camera is moving a tiny bit, so it's not really effecting my use of the phone, it's more about if I should do something about it.
Im noticing the very same thing from day one. I thought it was just me having accidentally knocked the phone too hard to something, but since everything works without any issues, it doesnt seem to be the case.

I honestly thought it was just mine! Also noticed it from day one. I think I saw a metal shield over the processor area in a teardown, I am pretty sure that it's the source of the noise as it is exactly the spot where the sound is coming from. I don't thinj it is anything whatsoever to fuss about, but it does take some of the otherwise quality feel from the phone.
I was thinking the same thing, except from that the phone feels very "robust" for its price tag but since others seems to have the same noise I guess it's how it's "suppose" to be...
Mine has it too and my Mi4i had it also...
Doesn't happen here, I even place my ear close to the phone. Could it be a defect for one production batch that didn't happen on mine?
Mine too.
It's normal, think it's the optics. Had many phones with this. Including nexus 4 and a little bit on one plus one too.

You have to shake the phone right way in order to hear it. Seems like flat area up and down movement causes it mostly. Ex. If you put the phone on desk.
Alternatively that part may be stuck somehow in your device
Same here, it reminds me of the rattle in the iTouch 5G camera.

Done, I still don't hear anything. Why the hell am I looking for it anyway? :3
So from what I can tell from all of the answers the noise is obviously something many seem to have, but it seems normal and not harmful. If anybody happens to open up their phone they could maybe have a look in that area, but personally I think it comes from within the camera... (I might open mine up if I find a good place to buy the dark grey back cover...)

Loose vibration motor [Pixel]

Hey guys,
since a week i am having quite a big problem with my preordered Pixel. One week ago I had it on the table when I suddenly heard the vibration of incoming messages going from the normal deeptone buzzing of the vibration (my phone is mute all the time) to a loud and clear rattling. at first i thought maybe it was because it "jumped" around on the table, but it was in fact lying on my mousepad. When i picked up the phone i could clearly hear that the rattling was coming from the inside of the device, especially from the lower part. Since this moment, my pixel rattles whenever the vibration motor is running and the vibration of the device itself is much more slender.
I contacted the Google Support, saying that i am quite disappointed with my device, which after 3 weeks of usage looses its vibration motor. After now a week of not hearing from them they wanted a video of the problem, which i also have linked for you guys to check: https://goo.gl/photos/w5v1eg2qnkrZGKkD6
You hear me saying "One more time, please" on german to a friend who then sends me a message. After this you can clearly hear the loud rattling (compare the volume of the rattle to my voice!) when the message is received.
After this video, google tells me, that everything is fine with my device. Which is clearly not, because it was not like this the first three weeks. I have now a broken 750€ device where Google says, that everything is fine.
Disclaimer: This is my 5th Google Device (Nexus 4, Nexus 5 [3x, all broke within warranty due to software errors with stock rom], Nexus 7, Pixel C). It was not dropped or something else, it looks brand spanking new. I know how to handle devices. All my Devices use Stock ROM without root.
What do you think about it? It is also not the common "rattle" from the autofocus mechanism, like the Nexus 5X had it, back then you could hear the noise directly coming from the camera, which it isn't here...
Same here
My Pixel XL is doing the exact same thing and I have seen a few YouTube videos of other phones with this problem. I have had it since release and it started doing this sound 4 days ago. I have a replacement coming from Verizon today for this, and I'm crossing my fingers this one doesn't have the problem! It's very loud and essentially ruins the whole point of having your phone on vibrate-only if you can hear the vibration from across the room! I haven't dropped or damaged it, but something is clearly very wrong all of the sudden.
Good luck and I hope you can get yours replaced!
Device was purchased through Google store?
Did you use a custom kernel and crank the haptic feedback up?
Just curious........

Nope, as i said, device is unrooted, unflashed and untouched in this manner.
Regards
Well after watching that vid I don't see how Google can say it's normal.......I think you need to file a complaint with BBB

Thanks, i also thought about that. Google says it is a totally normal noise when the vibration motor is placed externally in the unibody, without being on the logic board. Which is obviously a lie, because the noise wasn't like this in the beginning
