So, after trying to root my device for the past 6 hours through all the different methods (adb / fastboot) and the one-step root kits, all of them have failed.
I Also tried HTCDev unlocker, but i get an error code of 172.
My device is still s-on (SunShine didn't work and WeakSauce does not work).
It is running 5.0.1.
Seeing as how I have failed thus far, I have caved and decided to make this thread.
Sadly, there is no answer for you at this time. You need to be s-off to root and Sunshine is the only way. However, at this time Sunshine doesn't work on Verizon M8's running 5.0.1. They say it's in the works but nobody knows when (or if) it'll be available. HTCDev won't work to unlock your bootloader because Verizon phones are blocked on HTCDev. The only thing you can do is sit back and wait for Sunshine to be updated. Stock unrooted is your only option. At least at this time.
Edit: Now that I think about it, there is one other option available. If you can find someone with a java card you can get s-off that way. There are several people on this forum who have one but if you don't live close to them, it would involve sending your phone to them and having to wait to get it sent back. Not ideal but it is an option.
I have one in PA

hey everybody. i find myself in the same (miserable) boat as pretty much all the other posters: unthinking and oblivious, i took the most recent ota on my vzw m8 and now i'm stuck s-on until either the good folks over at streamlined mobile soultions llc figure things out or i obtain the use of a java card to get it s-off. as one might imagine, i'm leaning strongly towards the latter cuz i don't know how long i'll have to wait for the former (tho if it were available, i wouldn't have any problem with it).

It makes little difference where the person with the Java card is located, help is available from UPS, FedEx and USPS.
It's worth the price!
If I had S on and no custom recovery installed I'd be delighted to fire up my old Thunderbolt or even my prehistoric Blackberry and use it while my M8 made a round trip to a Java card owner!

my htc one x works on tmobile now. make sure youo change the apn after unlocking the phone so you can get data (edge only)
First, I wasn't able to take a photo. A friend of mine is a store manager for a nearby AT&T store. I picked him coffee since I was in the area near his store. We went back in his office to chill, but one of his Sales Reps, was doing a training on how to check to see if the HTC One X bootloader was locked or unlocked for warranty/in store exchanges.
From when I used to work at AT&T, we'd do a training about 2 weeks before device came out or there was a change being made to policy or intelus.
According to my friend, the reps and himself think that AT&T will be allowing the bootloader to be unlocked through HTC DEV by the end of the month following a OTA software update.
I personally am staking like 50/50 on this because it could mean AT&T knows the devs here on XDA will unlock the bootloader, or AT&T is allowing HTC DEV to allow the unlock.
Just doing an PSA.

Do they do that so they don't have to deal with free warranty service? Thinking about it, they only going to benefit from users being able unlock their devices and void their warranty...
Next step for them would be void warranty for rooting and after that void for removing bloat.
you could always get this

Though I will saay, at my friends store they have a machine, not the one for transferring numbers and such from one to device to another. This is a prewarning for anyone still nieve enough to accept an ota before its been torn down and examined. The One X, brother device(EVO 4g LTE) recently received an ota that SIGNIFICANTLY improved security on the device. Changes included a new hboot(as seen in the new hox ruu leaked) along with other patches, any EVO that was not previously s OFF can no longer use the s OFF exploit, lazypanda. On top of that, EVO and hox were both able to flash radios and kernals with the unlocked bootloader. The EVO, s on with unlocked bootloader can NO LONGER flash radios or kernals. Recoveries only. I am posting this to make the community aware that this update WILL most likely implement the same security changes that were put on EVO LTE owners.
If you accept the ota, you will likely:
Lose ability to flash kernals, and radios
Lose ability to use a s OFF exploit if it becomes available on the current(non updated) hboot.
Do thank the person bringing the ruu leak to xda for developers to examine and warning us of the soon to come ota. If it weren't for him, it would just show on our devices and a good percentage would accept, clogging our forums with help me threads. Check out the ruu leak thread to thank.

Not talking about devs, who contribute something to the overall environment (I would never refer to devs as "clowns"). I'm talking about the people who start fooling around with their phones without knowing what they're doing, brick them, then post things like "Will AT&T know what I did if I return this for a warranty replacement?"
And, whether the carriers can afford it (they can) isn't the point. It's that these folks motivate the carriers to make their phones ever more locked down in order to avoid having to deal with these bogus exchanges.
Wait, you got that wrong, reason we are getting more bricked phones is because the security on this device is NEW. Can't figure it out if you don't try, trying consists of trial and error. Well you know the sweetest of the story....
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
For every guy that takes a risk and flashes something that might achieve s off, 10 people have returned their phone because the email doesn't work, or the screen is too yellow, or its too quiet.. or loud. Do you see what I'm sayin?
Normal people don't root.. they just complain. So HTC locking down the phone more isn't preventative measures for tech support or return rates... Its just HTC being sloppy. Next it'll be that source is being delayed because they don't want people to brick their phones lol

Thanks, good looking out. Some people will heed your warnings, others wont. I'm afraid this would be a little harder to overcome than the 1.85 fiasco when everyone updated before there was a root exploit. If HTC is playing with the security like this then that is a little scary to me. Damn i wish i had a little birdy at HTC. Maybe samsung is the future for rooted devices. Maybe google will open Motorola up. HTC is goin backwards

Yeah, it's definitely a concern to me. I wish they would understand and just make it easy to do. The unlock site.could have an optional S-off to go with it. I would think it would be pretty easy for these guys to design a device to be very dev friendly, and also easy to recover if/when things go bad.

What do you guys expect? Obviously rooted and unlocked devices cost the carriers and MFR's $$$. In lost tethering revenue, increased RMA rates, etc. etc. Don't think for one second that ATT doesn't have a detailed analysis of what rooted users cost them in terms of both lost revenue and increased RMAs.
This is a cat and mouse game, it's futile to ask the mouse to just jump in the cat's mouth.
I don't get it.

Yep, and you're locked out of their latest gen network and htc is assuming no liability because you waived your warranty when you unlocked it.
Thing is, with att, even if you waive warranty on HTCDEV they have no way to check that. And they have customers in there face on a 2 year contract "hey my device just randomly stopped working, I need a new one!". What are they supposed to do?
Again, I'm not taking sides. I think we have a right to do what we're doing, I'm just saying I don't ever expect the carriers to embrace it.
And look at this angle.
With 1.85 and unlocked BL and root, I could write a cool app and submit it to the market. Some sort of backup app or boot animation or whatever, so it requires root, of course. And I could set it up to timebomb permabrick EVERY SINGLE DEVICE it was installed on by trashing SBL3. Can you understand why this makes the carriers nervous?

In lost tethering revenue, increased RMA rates, etc. etc. Don't think for one second that ATT doesn't have a detailed analysis of what rooted users cost them in terms of both lost revenue and increased RMAs.
This is a cat and mouse game, it's futile to ask the mouse to just jump in the cat's mouth.
I don't get it.

Right now I'm at a loss of words. I am thankful for the support shown by the community so far. The reason this whole boot loader thing got me going was my inspire 4g. I had 2 years on that phone. It was my first venture into android and i was hooked. Rooted it as soon as I understood what the risks involved. Never bricked it. I only did it to be able to back my phone up entirely. I never expected to run a custom rom. I did and never looked back. I treated that phone badly on day and needed a new one, hence the One X. I had hoped to get a 1.85 but I didn't. I spent $213 dollars over 2 years on apps and in app purchases. I just want to be able to transfer all that to this phone. That shouldn't be too hard. Unfortunately it issue without root. Who is at fault here? Is it AT&T, HTC, or even Google for not providing a way for us to have a working backup utility without root?

Hey guys...
I was unfortunate enough to come across some aroma/twrp bug while updating my kernel and now my phone is bricked. Oh well, life happens. I am going to have to send it in for JTAG repair. I found that mobiletechvideos.com does JTAG repair for $60 so that's not all terrible. Do any of you have experience with them? Is there service good? From what I can tell they look legit..
On their website they also also have numerous "addons" you can choose for your order such as "ROM/Root upgrade service" and "S-off". Now, does that mean that once I get the phone back it will be in a state where I cannot root the device? I have my old bootloader unlock code from before... would that work to root the phone after this procedure is performed? It is my understanding that they (mobile tech videos) modify whatever image they push to your phone to include your IMEI information. Would that give me troubles if I tried to unlock the phone using my old unlock code?
Perhaps I should email them directly.
Anyway, what are your thoughts?
I would ask them, but I believe they can set things up however you want. I recall seeing one person saying they got it back s-off, etc.

I sent them an email. Yeah, you can pay extra for S-off etc.. but if I get the phone back in a state that I can do this myself why waste my money, right? I'll let you know when they get back to me.

Scroll down and you'll see a huge list of devices supported by the one box. More devices added with firmware updates to the box. Ships from the uk as there is no distributor on this side of the oceans. afaik
But there are distributers on this side. Madusa riff boxes will do the same thing. The JTag site has a list of suppliers that sell riff boxes in the US. Since more devices are becoming usb supported, the need for soldering is limited to certain devices.

does JTAG'ing void the warranty as they have to open up the phone? I haven't looked in depth at videos of people opening up the phone but I can only imagine that they ahve some stickers inside...
If not, I'd definitely send my phone to them if it meant I could get S-OFF even though I'm on JB

I imagine it voids the warranty. But then again, unlocking the bootloader and rooting your phone could also void the warranty...
Thanks Venomtester, I guess I'll start packing up my phone then.
I used mobiletechvideos to fix my HBOOT and S-OFF and they did a fantastic job on both. I would recommend them to anyone looking for that service.
So I kow Mobile Tech does jtag but what if u dont have the IMEI because i got this phone in a trade and it doesnt have a IMEI sticker or whatever. I forgot to even write it down. Anyways I am not going to use the phone on contract so is there any other possible solutions?

IMEI is engraved into your simcard tray. Have a look
