the lag/stutter/low fps in apps? what is it from? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How come an old nexus 4 gets a steady 59-60fps in chrome and the galaxy s6 gets 40-55-30 fps? And stutters a lot in many other apps? The mighty exynos 7 :/
I knew i should of not got this phone. My htc one m7 was smoother. So was my xperia z1 and nexus 4 and lg optimus g
The phone is Fast at opening apps and benchmarks. But cant do simple scrolling :/

Why not? Then by all means go back to Nexus 4 or M7, exchange it for Iphone 6 plus, instead of whining about it.. A thread just to complain about it. Why not? It's a free country.. People who makes this kinds of threads has a personal vendetta to Samsung and knowing you're in xda, it means you have thoroughly researched about the phone and you made a choice. Stick to it and suck it in, root it to make it lag free or exchange it, you just have to live with it..

Cause of touchwiz

Its a big issue Derp. And i havent seen samsung say anything about it. And i see many people complaining about it on other forums
Like is it touchwiz
Is it memory leak (but nexus 4 doesnt have issue)
Is it app compatibility
Etc
Not, 'if you dont like the phone than Gtfo'

It't not an issue for me. I have zero lag or stuttering on this phone in any app to be fair. It may have it's shortcomings but lag? Nah.

My phone was pretty laggy in the beginning, after latest updates and a slimmed down ROM it's much more smooth

Re Chrome, I think I saw it somewhere saying Chrome is not optimized for Samsung's CPU. Stock browser is pretty smooth IMHO.
So far I have only experienced lag/stutter in Play Store and Twitter app. I remember Twitter was fine before, seems after a particular update, the app has shown sign of stutter...........

I have chrome disabled for all it has to offer..
Before S6 I used chrome on all my phones but since S6 I am onto the stock browser.. it is much better than chrome

Chrome is usable if you install adaway. Needs root tho

Aparently Chrome has issues with the S6 on 5.0.2. You can try download the Chrome Samsung Support library to help speed up Chrome on Lollipop.

Chrome with Samsung support library is what comes default with the Verizon version and is ok but animated ads do put a drag on it. Probably not as optimized as stock browser that was removed probably by Verizon. I've since switched to mobile Firefox+ABP which is better.
General advice to maintain the quality level of XDA is to refrain from whining, make an effort to search/find a solution before expecting an easy handout.

The stock browser seems optimised for the Exynos chipset, performing much better than chrome in many tests (just Google it). Chrome still lags somewhat even with the library update.
Hopefully this is resolved in 5.1.1

It's ridiculously laggy. When I first got this phone it was magical. Now I find myself clearing apps out every four apps to keep speed.

[Q] Laggy browser scrolling!

Is the issue of laggy and unusable browser fixed? Is there anycustom ROM that fixes it?
Disable flash.
I do not even have flash installed. It is a problem with android itself. I tried dolphin, stockbrowser and skyfire - same laggy performance. Only opera mobile works fine - because it is using hardware aceleration. Has someone used browsers from SGS or DHD (on custom roms)?
I have laggy browser only when page includes alot of big images. Overall it works fine. SGS browser is much more worse, than nexus s.
That of the SGS in 2.3.3 works much better than the nexus
Idk why google or Samsung don't address this issue.

I have heard something else. No one has been happy with the browser of 2.3.3 with SGS.
I checked and firefox browser works quite well.
Browsing on Android is terrible, even with flash turned off or set to 'On Demand'
The whole readjusting the page thing to fit the width of the phone slows it down way too much.

default browser and dolphin HD gets sluggish scrolling whenever the page have images. I tried firefox recently and it was actually faster. Apparently it doesn't render the images completely when u load the page, it only shows a low resolution version of the image which is just enough for viewing on our 4" screen. Only when u pinch zoom in, the browser will render the image further display the image in more details.

Oh yea ? Have you tried all the phones with all the ROM's, etc., to see if everything on android fails ? Don't quite think so. So, no. Browsing on Android isn't terrible. Browsing on SOME handsets may be.
OH, and btw. The readjusting doesn't slow anything at all. Only the scrolling does, on some phones. But you should've know this if you ACTUALLY had some experience with Android.

I do have experience with Android since I have a Nexus S right now.
I have tried different roms and no they have not made browsing any better. iOS browsing speed is far ahead of what Android offers. To have to install roms on a vanilla Android device by Google to speed up browsing confirms my point. My Nexus is not an old phone by any measure. My 3g iPhone has significantly less lag than my Nexus S. That's a problem. Most people are NOT using roms and don't know or want to even do it. If it can't work by itself, it's BROKE. Why would you attempt to justify a weakness of a product you own?
Do you have any experience with iOS? You would know how bad Android browsing is if you have ever used an iPhone.
I wasn't justifying a weakness for the Nexus. I was just pointing out that you can't say that all Android phones suck at browsing when you couldn't have tested them all. I wasn't referring at the Nexus. For example, on my Desire, the browsing was as smooth as it can get. I have in fact used the iPhone and know that it hasn't got problems, so that's not the point.
opera 11 is the nicest I think. stock browser sux. lets wait for gpu accelerated browsers
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Google hasn't delivered a decent browsing experience. They create android and if the stock browser sucks then it's an android problem. The browser is not some special feature that can excuse these kinds of issues at this point in the development of smartphone software.

Problems with droid charge?

Anyone having performance issues with their charge? I had high expectations for this phone but im getting lag in just about everything. . IE this forum scrolling through threads is way laggy compared to fascinate. Im not sure if I have a bunk phone or if the hardware sucks or if its the ROM just sucks. Any hope for this phone?
No I'm noticing some laggy browsing as well. Coming from the Droid Incredible i figured this would be much quicker. At times I think 3g on it was faster than wifi on this. Im sure it'll speed up once the cache builds up for the sites i browse. I also notice my linpack and quadrant scores are pants on this. I would love root and a new kernel but that damn ota seems to be holding us back.
My guess is its the charge's browser. I read reviews where it has bad problems with sites with a lot of flash (such as the ads). just tried this site on both the stock browser and dolphin browser and dolphin browser works fine.
It was nearly unreadable on the stock browser. So try a browser from the market.

You're right, browsing on Dolphin seems much faster. It does still hang at the end but it isn't nearly as bad.
Also, while I know its a completely different phone from what I had, the keyboard and auto-correct drive me absolutely mental.
Auto correct can be turned off in menu->settings->keyboard
I just noticed that I have two burnt out pixels .. ack. bright red dots, mostly noticeable on boot screens.
I think it's the ROM. Everything seems sluggish / lags randomly on my charge. So far it really feels like touchwiz is to blame, but I imagine the filesystem is partially to blame.
It really sucks that my year old Incredible seems faster than a brand new "flagship" phone.
I removed alot of bloatware installed launcher pro and Opera mini, then I also removed Touch wiz and the phone is alot faster. Installing launcher pro and then removing/renaming the touch wiz apk made a big difference performance wise. I have no lag when using the interface now. And yes the stock browser is crap, I thought it was the phone as well, but after installing Opera I notice a big difference.
what exactly does the TouchWiz app do? What do you lose by freezing it?

TouchWiz is Samsung's launcher. Do NOT freeze or remove it before downloading an alternative (such as LauncherPro) and rebooting to activate it. Otherwise ODIN will be in your immediate future.

I believe the keys not lighting up was also the default behavior for the Fascinate, and that was resolved with a custom kernel. This may be inaccurate, as I came from the Droid X, but luckily the key layout is identical so I didn't need any time to relearn.

Scrolling performance?

I find my S6 doesn't scroll nearly as well as one would expect. It's pretty good in settings and such. But Chrome, Google Play, News+ and Tapatalk are not fluid at all and skip all over. Chrome is probably the worst culprit and I've seen others have switched to the Samsung browser. Has anyone seen any improvement with a factory reset or any other solution? Anyone else feel it should be better? Apologies if this has already been mentioned, I didn't see anything recent. Thanks!
It scrolls great on mine. No issues that I've seen so far. The only thing that's annoying is when I flick a page up/down it comes to a stop quickly, I wish it had more inertia. But it's really smooth overall.
Notice the lag when battery is getting low using Chrome beta or when I have a lot of apps running. I was using Google music connected to a bluetooth speaker and tried using Chrome beta, music was skipping and kept losing connection with the speaker, after clearing apps everything was good then I seriously think it's a ram issue.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but I think some issues were introduced by installing the OTA out of the box. If you have the time and wherewithal to re-set up your phone I would recommend restoring your firmware using Samsung Smart Switch. I was getting pretty bad performance out of the box in Chrome/S Browser (many issues reduced with AdAway); however, Iwas noticing much better out of box performance after a system firmware restore. Perhaps something to try if you have the time and energy to do so
Edit: I want to make a distinction between factory restore and firmware update. The firmware update will rewrite the system files negating any effect of a janky OTA flash. A factory restore will not wipe and reset the system partition
Scrolling performance is indeed terrible, especially in Chrome. I don't think any number for factory reset will have any impact on this. Rather, it's a driver thing. Try disabling JavaScript in Chrome and you'll see that it scrolls almost impeccably. Breaks a lot of pages though. Adblock helps too cause it gets rid of those pesky ads. Finally, there's a package to download in the appstore called chrome Samsung compatability or some such, that some people feel improves the scrolling.
It's a sad state of affairs when my friends Galaxy S4 scrolls the same page smoother than my S6. Here's hoping it'll all be fixed via firmware soon.
glad it's not just me that's noticed this - agree hopefully they'll sort soon!
I think Android 5.1 outspeeds Android 5.0.
I have a Nexus 5 and this device is one of the first who gets updates of Google. I noticed a difference in speed and performance (micro-stutter, scrolling) between the 5.0.x and 5.1.x update. The 5.1 update is just more fluid and responsive.
I believe when we have the 5.1 update on our Galaxy S6, speed is beyond perfection!
We just have to wait for now
I've found the Firefox browser is much faster than Chrome and perhaps a bit faster than the Samsung one - still dissappointingly slow though, hopefully they'll resolve soon.
Frankly, I'm surprised more people haven't brought this up as a concern. Benchmarks are meaningless when the experience is dragging like this.
Chrome is not optimized for the S6 and it does have a Java scrips fail when ever a ad comes up(wich is always these days) thats why I use the built in browser wich is lightyears faster and smoother (by much!)then chrome browser.
my gs6 doesnt lag, maybe its because i blocked all the ads with adaway

I'm guessing Google won't rush to optimize its apps for the S6 since Samsung is using an in-house processor? Does that make it harder for developers to get at?

I'd like to avoid rooting for once on this one.
I was playing around with Instagram on an S6 today. Scrolling is noticeably stuttery. I noticed way more dropped frames whilst scrolling down my feed on an S6 than I get on my Nexus 5. My N5 scrolls down an insta feed pretty much flawlessly. Scrolling on the S6 seems way faster than on stock android. Is that a Touchwiz thing?
I was also pretty fed up with Chrome on my S6. Now using UC Browser instead...it is absolutely fantastic. Very fast and smooth scrolling, with many features but still lightweight. Suggest you try it!

I don't think it's a Touchwiz thing, I just think there are several apps that haven't been optimized for the phone. However I have no idea what it takes or how difficult it is to optimize an app for different hardware. The stock browser versus Chrome is night and day, for instance.

So i've been playing around with the phone a little more and i think it might be a TW thing, because scrolling down the settings menu is just as fast. I guess i can understand why there are so many dropped frames when the scrolling is THAT fast!

This time Verizon must have allowed the Samsung browser because it's there

It isn't on the S6 / Edge, they only have Chrome. On this one Chrome is on the home screen but then i noticed an icon for Internet in the app drawer and it's Samsung's browser. It's better, faster and has built in reader mode.
Yea, thank goodness. They allowed it on the Note 4 as well, but it was gone from the s6. I absolutely despise when Verizon does that garbage

For me, it's less of a memory leak. It also has little things like the ability to hit dictionary on words highlighted with the stylus. I've just never liked Chrome all that much, even tho I use it a lot, even on desktop. Windows 10 edge browser kills it in features..just needs to be optimized.
How does Edge kill it on features?!? Edge doesn't even support extensions yet... By definition it can't beat it on features...
That was truly one of the silliest things I've read all day.

Oh crap, forgot about the hyper sensitive nerd ragers on XDA. Sorry.
Maybe I shouldn't say kill it, but "will" kill it once things like extensions are added. Edge has reading view, save pdf, annotations, decent cortana integration on desktop, etc. A lot of things you can get with Chrome, but through extensions. Extensions slow Chrome down (you'll disagree, but it does). Maybe I chose my words poorly, Chrome has features that I use a lot..but extensions aren't one of them.
This is for me personally. I understand you like Chrome and it's the greatest thing ever for you. It isn't for me. That's ok.
Rager Lol. Whatever.
Almost every feature you listed can be done with extensions in Chrome.
Regardless, I do agree that the Edge browser has a lot of potential though.
Personally my browser of choice for Android is Firefox (If you'd like to know why, I can go into more detail).
But, sometimes it's nice to use the minimalistic/stock browser, in this case the Samsung browser. Usually because they offer enough functionality to do what you need for basic browsing while being fast and light on the phone, so it doesn't eat your battery or memory up as much as a full-featured browser like Chrome/Firefox will. This is particularly true for low end phones with lower specs.
But since the specs are so generous on this particular phone, I've honestly just been using Firefox so far.
Nochromo is my newest go to. Been using it for a few weeks and can't believe how much faster pages load without ads.

It depends on the website you connect. If it is a heavy website then it is bound to lag doesn't matter if you are using mobile browser or a desktop one. Also depends on how many apps you are loaded to memory (Ram). We will need more information about the website, how much RAM is left in your phone at the time it lags, the type of browser you are using etc. For us to help you.
Edit: It seems like you are trashing this phone in multiple threads. If you really have problems with this phone you should consider returning and as you mentioned in the last thread wait for "Pixel 2"
Just ban the guy and delete the thread. Smells like trolling from miles away.
