[Q] Laggy browser scrolling! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the issue of laggy and unusable browser fixed? Is there anycustom ROM that fixes it?

Disable flash.

I do not even have flash installed. It is a problem with android itself. I tried dolphin, stockbrowser and skyfire - same laggy performance. Only opera mobile works fine - because it is using hardware aceleration. Has someone used browsers from SGS or DHD (on custom roms)?

I have laggy browser only when page includes alot of big images. Overall it works fine. SGS browser is much more worse, than nexus s.

That of the SGS in 2.3.3 works much better than the nexus

Idk why google or Samsung don't address this issue.

I have heard something else. No one has been happy with the browser of 2.3.3 with SGS.

I checked and firefox browser works quite well.

Browsing on Android is terrible, even with flash turned off or set to 'On Demand'
The whole readjusting the page thing to fit the width of the phone slows it down way too much.

default browser and dolphin HD gets sluggish scrolling whenever the page have images. I tried firefox recently and it was actually faster. Apparently it doesn't render the images completely when u load the page, it only shows a low resolution version of the image which is just enough for viewing on our 4" screen. Only when u pinch zoom in, the browser will render the image further display the image in more details.

You are right i think. Its a shame though that most complex browser (dolphin) is inuasable.
Is dolphin works well on dhd or sgs?

Oh yea ? Have you tried all the phones with all the ROM's, etc., to see if everything on android fails ? Don't quite think so. So, no. Browsing on Android isn't terrible. Browsing on SOME handsets may be.
OH, and btw. The readjusting doesn't slow anything at all. Only the scrolling does, on some phones. But you should've know this if you ACTUALLY had some experience with Android.

I do have experience with Android since I have a Nexus S right now.
I have tried different roms and no they have not made browsing any better. iOS browsing speed is far ahead of what Android offers. To have to install roms on a vanilla Android device by Google to speed up browsing confirms my point. My Nexus is not an old phone by any measure. My 3g iPhone has significantly less lag than my Nexus S. That's a problem. Most people are NOT using roms and don't know or want to even do it. If it can't work by itself, it's BROKE. Why would you attempt to justify a weakness of a product you own?
Do you have any experience with iOS? You would know how bad Android browsing is if you have ever used an iPhone.

I wasn't justifying a weakness for the Nexus. I was just pointing out that you can't say that all Android phones suck at browsing when you couldn't have tested them all. I wasn't referring at the Nexus. For example, on my Desire, the browsing was as smooth as it can get. I have in fact used the iPhone and know that it hasn't got problems, so that's not the point.

opera 11 is the nicest I think. stock browser sux. lets wait for gpu accelerated browsers
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

Google hasn't delivered a decent browsing experience. They create android and if the stock browser sucks then it's an android problem. The browser is not some special feature that can excuse these kinds of issues at this point in the development of smartphone software.

Has the browser lag been fixed?

http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/12/22/google.pushes.first.nexus.s.firmware.update/
So apparently the first update for the nexus s. 2.3.1 was suppose to address the browser lag.
I've been creeping the Nexus s forum for a bit now and was wondering if the browser is as smooth as the galaxy s.
It seams like the browser when compared to the Atrix(had and returned) is a bit smoother.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm3BJ2vKpGM
What are you guys experiencing right now?
The Galaxy S browser is special, it's hardware accelerated. The NS one isn't, and thus isn't as smooth.
Do you think Google will release the same update down the road? Have they acknowledged this problem yet?
There's alternative browsers such as Dolphin Browser HD. They work fine... at least for me.
It honestly does not make sense that Google would not address the browser lag. I hope it gets addressed asap cause I love going on worldstarhiphop

Even with dolphin HD it lags. It even lags on the market website when you have the app screenshot on the page, how ironic...
The thread about black wallpapers here is impossible to scroll with NS. Disappointing and unacceptable.
No I don't think its been fixed yet. Galaxy s is a special case cause Samsung hardware accelerated it for that phone. How ironic, Samsung giving a better update over Google.
Opera !!! FLASH WORK
NO LAGG AT ALL !!!
Opera need to be ORIGINAL browser
On my side it feel somewhat slow when there is a Flash applet in the page and I try to zoom in while the page is still loading. But after that it seems to be fairly quick to respond.

Just curious if it's his phone.
It's actually a bit choppy on Opera 11... weird. First site that I've seen that made Opera 11 slow down a lot. If you think that's bad though... try that site on the regular android browser. It's basically unresponsive lol. There's something at the top of that page that's causing the browser to bog... perhaps a bit of bad website code?

Nah it's not that bad at all. Sure it's not great, but it's quite usable.
You know what, I had the same issue with my nexus s, really bad lag, even swiping down the mobile Facebook page was stuttery. I only just had mine, and it was already rooted with natarchy's kernel on and overclocked to 1.2Ghz. Also with clockworkmod flashed. So I thought this was a deal breaker, so last night I found s method using a nandroid backup off here to flash it back to stock, relocked the bootloader, and took it upstairs to charge up, ready to take back today. Well, guess what, tried it out again while lying in bed, and on every single big site I could think of, even like engadget. Like all the YouTube browser tests it was really quick, so I thought I'd put flash back on to measure the impact it had, which was minimal. The wife has an iPhone 4 so I pinched her phone and did a side by side comparison of browser load speeds and the nexus s was constantly a bit quicker, so, take from this what you will, is it rooting?, maybe it was the governor I was using, or the kernels, but it is more than respectable now. Also, scrolling through big pages is smooth too btw.

What web browser do you use?

So many options when it comes to browsers on the market today. I figure some of you bounce around from browser to browser like I do.
Whats your favorite and why?
My vote is probably XScope seems to be smoothest and nicest UI for me.
Dolphin HD myself, nothing comes close

lets get some reasons why. not to be annoying just bored at work
Yeah, I also like xscope. I have dolphin installed also though.I like how xscope doesn't have to reload the pages when you go back to a previous page.in dolphin, I had to keep opening and closing multiple tabs to circumvent the problem. And xscope's layout is pleasing also.
I use Dolphin HD because it's the closest thing to a regular browser. I have never used Xscope but I think I'll check it out.
I think i might be making the change to Opera since it uses their servers and reduces data usage on your phones end. Im a broke college kid with T-Mobiles ****ty 2GB 4G cap
2 Days and im at 300mb already..(no wifi at work)
That seems to be a good work around to your problem. Does it save even more data than just changing your user agent to android rather than computer?
I've been using stock since release but recently decided to test out Dolphin HD.
so far, I really like it.
feature I love the most is the gesture.
I can just scribble a pattern and it will take me to the webpage I assigned that particular scribble to.
very convenient.
also the tab feature with shake add-on.
it's like Google Chrome and you can shake your phone to change tabs.
speaking of add-ons, some helpful ones like the shake and screen cut.
I like the true desktop view option.
you can access your bookmarks and tool bar by just sliding the page left or right.
also very convenient.
doesn't seem to load all the flash ads as fast or well as stock. most of the time I just get a little emblem where the ad should be. guess if I clicked on it it would load the ad... not complaining though. who needs ads.
I'm still in the testing stage with different browsers, used to use Opera on my old phone, but so far, I'm really digging Dolphin HD.
I use stock. I see no reason to use a 3rd party browser. Stock does everything I need.

honestly thanks to 3G watchdog ive noticed about 30 min of web surfing using stock browser only takes around 35mb tops (with flash enabled). Its not to bad but im going to test out opera to see the difference in data use. As for changing the agent im desktop allll day i hate the little mobile sites if i got 4.3 inchs of screen im gonna use it haha

It renders pages on their servers first, taking stress off your phone and reducing data. Speed's things up but I believe it does reduce image quality a little bit. (image reduction is honestly not really noticeable)

[Q] browser Performance

i just asked myself something and maybe someone could held me out. is there anychance we can hope for a better browser performance for our sensation? as i see the browser of de galaxy2 is hardware accelerated but not of our sensation. And the browser performance on my friends stock samsung galaxy s2 is still far smoother then on our heavily tuned sensation (InsertCoin 2.2.1 ROM for me)
im a bit disappointed of this browser performance

honest answer:
just try the xda main forum (overview of all phones)
this ist just not acceptable. It laggs like f**king hell. Not all pages lag though. Though i recognize mini stutter and short lags on most of the pages. I really dont like this.
And i must say im always using the desktop view, not the mobile view.
and i cannot understand why a "dualcore" 1.2ghz!!! CPU is not able do render a webpage at 30fps. This lag feels like about 10fps browsing the xda Main Forum.
Even my old ancient pentium2 266mhz notebook is able to handle this page fluid.
Whats going wrong?
I know exactly what you're talking about, and if the Galaxy S2 can do that smoothly, that's awesome. But as far as usability goes, and me coming from a Galaxy S with Cyanogen.... it's way faster.
But I draw the line at usability. I used to go to www.ablogtoread.com often on the Galaxy S just to be completely slaughtered by a near completely lock up. I can browse that fine now.
The hardware acceleration does cause a tangible decrease in battery life as well. That's one side effect. Maybe someone can shed some light on this, maybe there is a hardware accelerated browser down the pipeline? Maybe Cyanogen will come through with that?
It's probably not what you want to read, but have you given Opera a try? It is way smoother than the stock browser, at least a far as rendering/scrolling. If you want to give that a try, get the bigger version of it from the market. I can't speak about the smaller one, but I think it is not as fast or as full featured as its big brother.

I think Opera on my Galaxy S 1 was smoother than the stock browser on the Sensation. Now, all browsers are not perfect (in fact, it renders the main page for xda forums very incorrectly and unpleasantly, at least as far as color goes, lol) so see if Opera is right for you.

Still i gotta say im using the Dolphin HD browser and not the original browser, this is even worse
tried opera now and i must say that it is really a lot smoother then dolphin! Not as smooth as the sgs2 but near already. Only downside is the slow loading performance when loading other pages. Dont know why but dolphin loads pages almost twice as fast.
Damn couldnt be the two just be combined and we could enjoy a really superb browser
Hope theres still some performance optimations lleft for our device

i mostly never had an issue with browser performance on sensation. may be once in a while i will see some delay in loading the page, but that may be due to spotty t-mobile network.
Opera Mini must be the one I used with my Sony Ericsson s710 then, lol. Ah, the good old days of gprs.

Which browsers are you guys using (For ICS Xoom)

Is Dolphin HD still the preferred method ?
Stock browser?
Chrome? doesn't do Flash though.
What else?
I love ICS Browser+. It is the stock browser with more options and tweaks. You can add a third ring to the Quick Controls. (best thing about stock browser, I never have to do anything but move my finger slightly to control all navigation). It is in the labs section. Quick Controls. On ICS Plus Browser it is just under Quick controls.
I use Dolphin for things still. But in general I have my ICS Browser+ set for PC mode and just use it for almost everything.

I did try Opera and Dolphin but both of those seemed to have issues with the BBC iPlayer. The Dolphin one, for example, would not go full screen. So I have gone back to using the Browser+ as that seems to work fine.
I'm loving Chrome, use it on my xoom, gnex, and all my pcs. The sync function is awesome.
Chrome
Dolphin
Ics browser +
Opera

I've been using the stick browser mostly. It's seems to work well on my Xoom. I'm going to give the ICS Browser + a try though. Just looked at at on the market. Looks nice.
I use Chrome as my main browser, because it syncs bookmarks.
But for the occasional time I need flash on my xoom, I use the stock browser.
Quick ics browser
Quick ICS browser+ is way better than ICS browser+. For pages loading nothing can beat Opera Mini but it doesn't load every images on certain websites so i use quick ics.

I tried, Opera, Chrome, ICS+, Stock, Boat, Maxthon, but i keep coming back to Dolphin HD. I think that once Chrome is officially released, i might drop Dolphin.
seems im the only one using opera mobile in my ics xoomstock was also nice but opera with sync rocks big time!
This is just the type of thread I was thinking about posting, I never got the chance though. I'm currently using ICS Browser+ but this brings up some questions I've been having. I recently got my Motorola Xoom and I love it!
The reason I'm using ICS Browser+ is because I can change the user agent. Right now I have it set to iPad otherwise pages just load mobile versions. The other question is, is it just me or does Google Chrome on Android stutter and show a lot of white when scrolling quickly?
Chrome also doesn't allow user agent switching and also only loads mobile desktop websites which is kind of surprising and really upsetting. I'm hoping Google changes it to load desktop websites by default.
Any suggestions for a new Xoom user?
Thanks all.. I'm trying out ICS quick browser, it is nice, but wow, one of the biggest reasons IMO for android tablets>Ipads is FLASH.
and the ICS quick browser + doesn't seem to do flash at all..
Meanwhile dolphin HD , seems to do it just fine, but I do like general browsing better on the +
sucks!
And Chrome simply will NEVER support flash, so thats done with too

I've noticed that, too, on my friend's iPad which I occasionally use. Chrome got an update which is (mostly) awesome! Way smoother, and pages load quicker for me! Only bad part is the new icon... In the Play Store it shows as the same, but on actual devices the colouring is faded, fugly, and gringey... I want the old icon back! The red looks pink-ish, purple-ish, and the green is puke green... Yellow is dingey as well. The white gradient is also coming from the left of the top instead of the centre... I'm kinda disgusted by it... It looks better on my Nexus S 4G because SAMOLEDs are oversaturated, but it's still a good 1,000 times more dingey! It's soooo much uglier, but I love its speed...

Scrolling performance?

I find my S6 doesn't scroll nearly as well as one would expect. It's pretty good in settings and such. But Chrome, Google Play, News+ and Tapatalk are not fluid at all and skip all over. Chrome is probably the worst culprit and I've seen others have switched to the Samsung browser. Has anyone seen any improvement with a factory reset or any other solution? Anyone else feel it should be better? Apologies if this has already been mentioned, I didn't see anything recent. Thanks!
It scrolls great on mine. No issues that I've seen so far. The only thing that's annoying is when I flick a page up/down it comes to a stop quickly, I wish it had more inertia. But it's really smooth overall.
Notice the lag when battery is getting low using Chrome beta or when I have a lot of apps running. I was using Google music connected to a bluetooth speaker and tried using Chrome beta, music was skipping and kept losing connection with the speaker, after clearing apps everything was good then I seriously think it's a ram issue.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but I think some issues were introduced by installing the OTA out of the box. If you have the time and wherewithal to re-set up your phone I would recommend restoring your firmware using Samsung Smart Switch. I was getting pretty bad performance out of the box in Chrome/S Browser (many issues reduced with AdAway); however, Iwas noticing much better out of box performance after a system firmware restore. Perhaps something to try if you have the time and energy to do so
Edit: I want to make a distinction between factory restore and firmware update. The firmware update will rewrite the system files negating any effect of a janky OTA flash. A factory restore will not wipe and reset the system partition
Scrolling performance is indeed terrible, especially in Chrome. I don't think any number for factory reset will have any impact on this. Rather, it's a driver thing. Try disabling JavaScript in Chrome and you'll see that it scrolls almost impeccably. Breaks a lot of pages though. Adblock helps too cause it gets rid of those pesky ads. Finally, there's a package to download in the appstore called chrome Samsung compatability or some such, that some people feel improves the scrolling.
It's a sad state of affairs when my friends Galaxy S4 scrolls the same page smoother than my S6. Here's hoping it'll all be fixed via firmware soon.
glad it's not just me that's noticed this - agree hopefully they'll sort soon!
I think Android 5.1 outspeeds Android 5.0.
I have a Nexus 5 and this device is one of the first who gets updates of Google. I noticed a difference in speed and performance (micro-stutter, scrolling) between the 5.0.x and 5.1.x update. The 5.1 update is just more fluid and responsive.
I believe when we have the 5.1 update on our Galaxy S6, speed is beyond perfection!
We just have to wait for now
I've found the Firefox browser is much faster than Chrome and perhaps a bit faster than the Samsung one - still dissappointingly slow though, hopefully they'll resolve soon.
Frankly, I'm surprised more people haven't brought this up as a concern. Benchmarks are meaningless when the experience is dragging like this.
Chrome is not optimized for the S6 and it does have a Java scrips fail when ever a ad comes up(wich is always these days) thats why I use the built in browser wich is lightyears faster and smoother (by much!)then chrome browser.
my gs6 doesnt lag, maybe its because i blocked all the ads with adaway

I'm guessing Google won't rush to optimize its apps for the S6 since Samsung is using an in-house processor? Does that make it harder for developers to get at?

I'd like to avoid rooting for once on this one.
I was playing around with Instagram on an S6 today. Scrolling is noticeably stuttery. I noticed way more dropped frames whilst scrolling down my feed on an S6 than I get on my Nexus 5. My N5 scrolls down an insta feed pretty much flawlessly. Scrolling on the S6 seems way faster than on stock android. Is that a Touchwiz thing?
I was also pretty fed up with Chrome on my S6. Now using UC Browser instead...it is absolutely fantastic. Very fast and smooth scrolling, with many features but still lightweight. Suggest you try it!

Nice, have installed it to try out! Chrome basically useless at present, been using Samsung Browser but happy to try this instead. Shame as I liked having sync with Chrome on my phone.

I don't think it's a Touchwiz thing, I just think there are several apps that haven't been optimized for the phone. However I have no idea what it takes or how difficult it is to optimize an app for different hardware. The stock browser versus Chrome is night and day, for instance.

Agreed with the syncing...how does the UC Browser compare to the Samsung browser?

I think UC Browser is much better but decide for yourself

So i've been playing around with the phone a little more and i think it might be a TW thing, because scrolling down the settings menu is just as fast. I guess i can understand why there are so many dropped frames when the scrolling is THAT fast!
