bad imei - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

i recently got a 64gb s6 from a friend. i popped my sim card in and its working great. however, the phone was reported lost and the imei now says blacklisted on Verizon. Im pretty sure that once i take my sim out of the phone, it will never work on the Verizon netork again. my question is, i usually at night reboot my phone. if i turn this phone off, will it stop working??

I don't believe so since you already have an active sim. Yet I've never used a black listed device so I'm not positive

Did you buy this phone from your friend? If so, did you give him a swift kick to the nut sack?

i rebooted the phone and its still good.

Awesome your stolen phone is still working for you...WE SO HAPPY!!!

It's not stolen, it was reported lost by the owner that I received it from. I don't know why he did this, but that's what happened

So he committed Fraud, reported it stolen and you got it... which makes it a STOLEN phone.
Why don't you get him to take it back and get a legit phone?

So it was stolen from the carrier then. So much better. I hope a mod bans you. People like you drive the costs up for everyone else.

The phone itself will continue to work but will NEVER again, EVER work on ANY providers network... It's garbage. IMEI blacklist is worldwide, cannot be removed from the list once it's added but the phone could still be used as a WiFi PDA. It's rare for a phone to be IMEI blacklisted by a provider unless it's specifically requested because if you find the phone, even if you own it and reported it stolen, it cannot be un-blacklisted.
P.S. Your buddy screwed you! Go kick his ass, if it's been stolen from the provider and you use the WiFi, the provider will find it, and the popo will come to get it, and you...possession is 9/10's of the law remember

One more thing, your buddy probably reported it lost for insurance, and the insurer always blacklists a lost phone before they issue a new phone under the policy.
The lesson here: buy your phone from a provider or manufacturer legit, or risk losing your money and possibly your freedom for a bit cuz you saved a couple hundred bucks buying from a booster.

So let me apologize @mcnu on the behalf of XDA an say we welcome your question an we're glad your using XDA as a source of knowledge.. I know your not the only one that has bought a phone only to find that it has been blacklist an I do know you can have the phone removed from the blacklist but it is not something that can be done over night and you will need the person that had it blacklisted to request it to me lifted.. Now if for some reason he had it blacklisted to file a insurance claim, I'm afraid you will be out of the money you paid for the device.. So my advice is to contact the person that reported lost and ask him if he filed a claim an if he didn't ask if he wouldn't mind to request it to be lifted on the grounds of the phone has been found....
I hope this help and good luck.

Speaking of useless posts, you're only 9 months late. Surely he's found a solution by now. Anyways, if my friend sold me a blacklisted phone, I'd sure punch him in the nuts. You've heard of a joke, right? That's all my post was. Get off your soapbox and move on.

If the seller reported it as lost/stolen then he did commit FRAUD. There is NO other way to state it.
Why don't you concentrate on a current topic and help someone rather than trolling in old threads where the conversation was to the point and accurate based on the OP's posting's.

[Q] Lost My Sensation, HTCSense Website not working anymore?

I was at the gym yesterday and apparently I might have left it there by mistake, I went to the htc sense site to track it down but apparently they 'renovated it' and now you can't track it! Is there any way I can track it down after its lost (or stolen I guess)?
I downloaded Plan B but apparently it didn't install correctly or something because I didnt get any email yet (probably since there isn't any wifi where the phone is)
Quite a stupid move from htc to shut down such a good feature like that :/
Sorry for your loss, that really sucks dude. HTC did warn people they were going to remove that feature a couple of months ago. I rather liked it as well. The only other thing I can think of right now is, try having your service provider track it down using the phones gps. Sometimes it works. Good luck.

Well Im gonna go to the police station tomorrow, they SHOULD be able to track it down, but I highly doubt their efficiency -.-'
Thanks mate : ) Also, from now onwards, I'm installing Prey on every device I own!
Uh the police won't find ****. Call your carrier and find out the insurance company if sprint or Verizon its asurion or similar. I hope ya got insurance I don't think $6 a month is bad.

Vodafone doesn't track phones where I live, only the police do that. They are successful (sometimes) but not in my past cases haha.
Oh well, we'll see what'll happen.

Really? By saying lost I was being polite. If I really just lost it at the gym it would be on the machine where I left it on, which it wasn't the next day. Whoever took it took off the sim card cos it wont dial and I had it charged an hour before gym so the battery should still be working.
So yes, still think its just 'lost'?

You left it somewhere, someone picked it up, YOUR FAULT! It's not stolen and whoever has it would not be prosecuted for picking it up. Maybe you should pay more attention to your $500 piece of technical equipment. Only a truly entitled person would believe that the police should take time away from investigating murders, kidnappings, and assaults, to find their phone. Is your phone that important? Is this what you are telling us?

Maybe he should pay more attention but you cannot say it is his fault somebody took it and didn't give it to the gyms reception or to the police. I would do so if I found something lost. In my opinion they should track it because stealing is a crime too, isn't it.

Indeed I did, well I had a custom rom so maybe he'd find it difficult due to the different drivers that might not be compatible with what he's used to. Also, I contacted support and they said the phone can be 'locked' if I give them the IMEI and Serial Number, which I did. lets see what will happen!

Wouldn't the phone just be locked out? I'm also curious... if it was used in a different country/provider, would it work? I would assume it'd work since the chances of your provider blocking the IMEI in the entire earth would be unlikely! If so, the answers seem pretty straightforward as to what will happen lol. Either it'll get sold or just not be usable!

Nono HTC told me they will block the phone themselves, so apparently it should be unusable worldwide I hope!
If it is in the wrong hands then it has probably been torn down and used for parts at this point. It's become a growing trend around here with lots of aftermarket repair companies getting busted for being nothing more than chop shops...
Well, here's what they said after giving them my IMEI number
"Dear sir again, we are really sorry for what happened with your device and we apologize for the inconvenience regarding HTCSense functionality. We will enter your data in our system, and we will list your device as stolen one. As soon as somebody tries to contact us with this data we will notify the authorities.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. "

Buying unlocked Nexus 5 thru craigslist?

If I buy an unlocked Nexus 5 from someone on craigslist. (The person bought it directly from google. Im gonna use this phone on Tmobile.) Is there anyway he can later report it lost or stolen and I get stuck with a blacklisted imei phone that i cannot use?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Absolutely is. It happens all the time.
Edit, if you go thru with the purchase I'd meet at the t-mobile store and have them transfer the emei to you and your account. If the seller is not willing to do that then you'll know what his or her intentions are.
Take a photo of him handing you the phone.

I strongly suggest that next time, just buy it off the carrier or an official store like BestBuy. You may not be scammed now but you never know what will happen the next time.
Also Nexus 5 is already unlocked...
I bought my N5 off someone from Craigslist without any issues, I have also bought many phones off Craigslist. Just meet at a cell store of your choice and before you purchase make sure it can be activated on your account.

I believe even if u meet at a store to check if it can be activate it without any issues, they can report it lost at a later time and get it blacklisted anyways.

What you can do with it is file a claim for fraud with local authorities. With email traffic, and a picture of the person's government issued identification, it is a cut and dry case. Just the fear of a case will keep most people honest to their deal.

If you immediately activate that phone on your account then that phone is now yours (pretty sure that is the case), I do not think anything after that point can affect your phone. This has been my experience on Sprint, I am not sure on other carriers.

No. This is why I suggested a picture of him handing the phone over. That is more security. A picture of the licence plate proves nothing except identity (if that) and certainly does not prove the op didn't steal the phone

Hmm..maybe a little bit of misunderstanding due to the geographical differences. When you say license in the USA, you are talking about a drivers license. He took a picture of his identification with his name and address on it. Having a name, address, email traffic discussing the transaction, and the phone in question would be more than enough evidence to charge someone with fraud.
Ok, then what? Dont be naive. If Sprint or Tmobile does not believe you that you bought that phone, you gonna hire a lawyer and pay thousands of dollars to prove that you have bought it? You really are in mercy of the phone representative you get on the phone. I've bought tons of phones on Craigslist and resold them on Ebay. If Craigslist seller wants to screw you, nothing will help you out, because its a cash transaction.. Even if you have clear evidence on your hands police wont do ****, simply because its not worth wasting their resources for one phone.
But yes, if he let you make the picture of his license, then most likely he wont try to report it lost/stolen. But then again, if he got it from Tmobile for $50 and did not pay the bill, Tmobile will block the phone, like Sprint and Verizon always have done and you still can be screwed even if the phone is not stolen.

Sounds like your phone was reported stolen by the previous owner and blacklisted on the network. You cannot install different roms on it like you can for Android. The best thing you could probably do know (unless you know the old owner and can get your money back) is to list it on eBay as "Bad ESN" and hope you can recoup your costs. There are probably ways to get around the bad ESN but that is not something you will find here.
Sorry I closed this thread because there isn't a lot of iPhone information on xda and iPhone threads tend to attract trolls .
I think that coolloser is correct and that T-mobile reported the phone stolen when the previous owner stopped paying T-mobile. Your only real recourse is to try and fix the issue with the previous owner or maybe T-mobile. Finally, changing the ESN of your phone to get around blacklisted numbers is illegal in most places and so is providing help for some one to do it. So please be really careful about asking about changing your ESN and please don't do it on xda.
Thanks!

Not sure what to do......

So a person had left their phone at work(which is totally unreal that somebody would forget a $500+ phone) 8/16. So our policy is after 60 days and its not claimed then anybody can claim it. So as of 11/22 nobody claimed it and I ask to take it. The battery was obviously dead and there was no charger. I came home and checked the IMEI on Swappa and it came back clean. So that means the person who lost it didn't put in a lost claim for it correct?
I guess I could always put it up on Ebay or something.
I charged it when I got in, and it was locked with a Knock code, so I guess I can just wipe it. There was no memory card but a sim
Contact the carrier. They can contact the owner through the sim information

Just don't like hearing about someone taking advantage of a situation when they know better. Also, according to your post to thanks ratio, you don't seem too helpful, so I shouldn't have expected different. Don't post about you trying to get a free phone from someone on a site that is meant to help people with their devices. Sorry for the rudeness, I am a crude individual, but I'm sure no one would want this to happen to them. And just because someone may not have the common sense to report the phone lost or stolen does not mean they deserve to have it taken. I agree though, the mods should close this thread as the right decision was made in the end, and for that, I commend you.
I misplaced my nexus 5 some months ago and I blacklisted it with my carrier. To this day I haven't received any information to where it is. I still hope somebody "does the right thing" and returns it to att instead of keeping it.

I'm supper annoyed.

A friend of mine keeps asking whether he should buy a new note5, and then after a week return it but with a different note 5 still in new condition in the box. I keep telling him that he can't beat the system, and T-Mobile will smack his tushi the moment it realizes what he did. But he won't listen, so now I made this thread to see what you guys say. I personally never see employees check the imei on returns, but that's just me.

That's the first thing Tmoble checks to make sure its

They do that not only to prevent fraud but but it's the

I'd say go about your business, and don't think about it anymore. You did what you could, and he's a grown man. If he wants to play around with karma, stand back and let him.

I'm just going to weigh in my two cents first of all when a phone is purchased the imei is scanned and allows it to be used on the network once a return happens that same imei is scanned maybe it's not physically scanned it may just be auto filled from the receipt but the new phone will stop working and won't be activated because it was "returned" tell your friend to no try and scam companies like that they're not stupid and returns are done a certain way for this very reason and if he is caught he could face trouble with the law just be honest and tell him to buy a new phone and stick with it.

I hope this isn't one of those scenarios where the friend is really you. First off, why buy a new one when he already has a like new one? If it's a T-Mobile note 5, unless it's blocked for non payment or something the phones still under manufacturer warranty and T-Mobile will exchange it. The whole story sounds a bit fishy to me tbh.
