I was at the gym yesterday and apparently I might have left it there by mistake, I went to the htc sense site to track it down but apparently they 'renovated it' and now you can't track it! Is there any way I can track it down after its lost (or stolen I guess)?
I downloaded Plan B but apparently it didn't install correctly or something because I didnt get any email yet (probably since there isn't any wifi where the phone is)
Quite a stupid move from htc to shut down such a good feature like that :/
Sorry for your loss, that really sucks dude. HTC did warn people they were going to remove that feature a couple of months ago. I rather liked it as well. The only other thing I can think of right now is, try having your service provider track it down using the phones gps. Sometimes it works. Good luck.

Well Im gonna go to the police station tomorrow, they SHOULD be able to track it down, but I highly doubt their efficiency -.-'
Thanks mate : ) Also, from now onwards, I'm installing Prey on every device I own!
Uh the police won't find ****. Call your carrier and find out the insurance company if sprint or Verizon its asurion or similar. I hope ya got insurance I don't think $6 a month is bad.

Vodafone doesn't track phones where I live, only the police do that. They are successful (sometimes) but not in my past cases haha.
Oh well, we'll see what'll happen.

Really? By saying lost I was being polite. If I really just lost it at the gym it would be on the machine where I left it on, which it wasn't the next day. Whoever took it took off the sim card cos it wont dial and I had it charged an hour before gym so the battery should still be working.
So yes, still think its just 'lost'?

You left it somewhere, someone picked it up, YOUR FAULT! It's not stolen and whoever has it would not be prosecuted for picking it up. Maybe you should pay more attention to your $500 piece of technical equipment. Only a truly entitled person would believe that the police should take time away from investigating murders, kidnappings, and assaults, to find their phone. Is your phone that important? Is this what you are telling us?

Maybe he should pay more attention but you cannot say it is his fault somebody took it and didn't give it to the gyms reception or to the police. I would do so if I found something lost. In my opinion they should track it because stealing is a crime too, isn't it.

Anyway, there aint much to do for now I guess. Thanks guys
Maybe you're lucky. As I heard HTC maintainances the HTC Sense website at the moment. But if the thief is smart enough he knows he could easyly reset the phone and you cannot track it anymore. Did you write to the support about your problem?

Indeed I did, well I had a custom rom so maybe he'd find it difficult due to the different drivers that might not be compatible with what he's used to. Also, I contacted support and they said the phone can be 'locked' if I give them the IMEI and Serial Number, which I did. lets see what will happen!

Wouldn't the phone just be locked out? I'm also curious... if it was used in a different country/provider, would it work? I would assume it'd work since the chances of your provider blocking the IMEI in the entire earth would be unlikely! If so, the answers seem pretty straightforward as to what will happen lol. Either it'll get sold or just not be usable!

Nono HTC told me they will block the phone themselves, so apparently it should be unusable worldwide I hope!
If it is in the wrong hands then it has probably been torn down and used for parts at this point. It's become a growing trend around here with lots of aftermarket repair companies getting busted for being nothing more than chop shops...
Well, here's what they said after giving them my IMEI number
"Dear sir again, we are really sorry for what happened with your device and we apologize for the inconvenience regarding HTCSense functionality. We will enter your data in our system, and we will list your device as stolen one. As soon as somebody tries to contact us with this data we will notify the authorities.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. "

So I just got back from the tmobile store, after sending in my g1 I bricked attempting to install the danger spl, claiming I had no idea what happened. Then I received a call from the person at the store that was helping me informing me that HTC would do a 'check' to see if it had been rooted, and fine me $400 if they discovered any unofficial roms on it. I told this man nothing.
Is this bs, or what?!
Either security has been upped in the recent past, and I'm going to have to pay $400, or he just tells that to everyone to scare them, I have no clue.
Any additional information would be appreciated very much.
TC,
No worries mate. It's BS, he's just looking to spook you, or he/she is a complete idiot of a rep. They can't fine you for it. You own the phone, not them (unless you're on some sort of a lease agreement contract I'm not aware of).
The most they'd do is just return the phone to you or something.
Cheers.

By not following directions, mostly.
Mine was taken by haykuro's death bringer.
-
This person called me back, and claims that HTC can and will check every phone sent in for unofficial roms. I'm not sure what gave me away, but he said if I rooted my phone, then do NOT send it in, because they will not replace it, and I will need to pay $400 for a new g1. He says he knows this from experience.
I'm rather frightened now, but would much rather trust you guys. So, encouragement pl0x?

TC,
This changes things. You see, when you said a 400 USD fine...that's BS....but...you should have the option to keep your bricked G1 (assuming they can't fix it). They can't keep it and not return it you. After that point, it's really your choice if you want to buy a new one or not.

Do you have 'Accident' insurance?
Yes, they can tell if you rooted it, or flashed it with an unofficial ROM. By doing that, you invalidated your warranty so if they really DO check it, they are pretty unlikely to repair it for free, hence the $400.

It's only bricked to you, not to them. It's more likely they'd just reflash the ROM and not bother to check, but what with Google's recent actions on trying to stop custom Android ROMs containing their closed source software, they MIGHT be pressuring HTC to check for custom ROMs as well...
It's your choice whether you want to take the chance or not. The worst that can happen is that they won't honour the warranty and either send the device back to you, or require you to pay for the repair.
Good luck for you and take easy.

LMFAO! That guy needs to get his ass kicked! You can turn your device in a custom ROM server and the only thing they can do is return it to you without repairing it. Nothing more. Ha! What ...... .... that rep must be. ........ ... ...... ..... haha!
If they catch you with a custom ROM, you would have to pay for the repair yourself, but that is normal. I never, NEVER, go to official repair shops. I just go to any repair centre and pay the price for the repair. Saves me a lot of nerves lol.

It's not difficult, but you can't do it from home because it requires dedicated hardware to connect directly to the phone's main board.
How do you think they flash these things in the first place, hmm? They sure as hell don't run the same type of flashing process that we do!
Hey everybody!
I have been a longgg time Android user & just recently started posting on XDA, I have been thinking about this lately & I just recently filed a complaint myself against VZW for blocking Wallet
..& then I realized u know whats better then just me complaining? How about everyone else who gives a ****!
So c'mon everybody lets take 5mins from ur busy hacking schedule & file a complaint. I want Wallet on my phone & as much as I love flashing to get it, how much nicer would it be to just be able to download it from the Play Store.
I know even if we get a few complaints it would be worth it ..so lets do this ppl!
http://www.fcc.gov/complaints
I'm with you! I'm filing a complaint right now. What they do should seriously get files as anti-trust. If Google can't promote it's own products on its own search engine because of anti-trust laws, Verizon shouldn't be allowed to promote (AND BLOCK!) it's own apps over someone else's.
Edit: That was ridiculously easy to do. Took 2 minutes and didn't ask hard questions.
Sent my complaint!! Do it people
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Easy to do and easy for them to do absolutely nothing. They will call you about the complaint you filed with the FCC and tell you they do not block GW and that their tech team is working with Google to make it work on their devices. If youre wondering how I know this, its because I filed a complaint such as this about a month or so ago and that was the outcome.
I agree
I filed a complaint about 2 weeks ago.
They may already be working on it, but if they get enough complaints, maybe it'll happen faster.

It has nothing to do with working, they just are probably waiting on a whole set of devices to become "compliant" with their specs.

Standard operating procedure for the FCC. I've filled a bunch of complaints with them and this is always the outcome. They'll give you a scripted phone call with no info what so ever and spend more money on the phone calls then an actual solution. I don't even waste my time anymore. **** em. They have their head so far up the telcos asses that's it's pointless.
They won't do much with isis in the works I bet

Yeah to some degree it was scripted. Now granted it was not a CSR that called me it was someone from Corporate. I also have her number if I wanted to call her back to ask her any other questions concerning the issue. She mentioned something about it needs to be integrated or some crap. She mostly blamed Google other than saying techs were working on it
Lol yea I got a call from them too ..& I do mean LOL cause is VZW serious when they are telling people that its Google's fault that the software is incompatible with VZW devices?
Like seriously?
What kind of retarded monkeys do they have working in the tech dept ..that people from XDA can get **** done faster then them

I am no phone guru I am more like a phone retard. I did manage to put a different ROM on my wife's S III It was a Straight talk S III. That was very easy.I did not like the phone I had with ST so I bought a S III from a private dealer. it worked great with my contract with Version. I was lied to by the manager of my local version store and the next thing you know I am paying almost $300.00 a month. I gathered up there equipment went to there store and returned it to them. they kept the equipment and then had the nerve to still charge me $900.00 for it and more for the broken contract. I am taking them to court. I will not pay for what they have.
Sorry about the tangent. I have a S III running kitcat 4.4.2. I have spent a month pouring over web page after webpage. trying every piece of software that any body told me to try either thru Odin or Sim card. nothing works the thing is still locked up tighter then a drum. When I use Odin or the simcard way It always ends in red letters saying failed in odin or if its on the sim card small red letts that say some thing to the effect of invalid signature. at first I thought it was me, then I thought no I am following the directions to the letter. then I thought corrupt software. but that doesn't work either. not every single one can be bag. so all that leaves is Kitcat has my phone locked up tighter then a drum. So what is the fool proof way to be able to put a new rom on this. and please use little word I am phone inapt.
I hope some one can help with easy to understand using small words how to do what I want to do. and if some one knows of a decent rom that looks like swamp things it lives in the swamp, That,s the look I am going for. I am heading out in a few months or a year longest, to Louisianan to gator hunting and maybe some bore hunting

I can see in the very near future a law suit. and I do know there is more then one way the jerk that lived here with me before he stole guns and a car and went to jail we got our phones at the same time from the same guy. this guy who lived with me had his phone unlocked completely and a new root installed in a matter of 2 days, so I know it can be don for a whole heck of a lot less then $50.00 he paid nothing and got all the software from the site. He was going to do mine to but he got busted first. The guy I bought the phone from can do it but he is way out west fishing.

You're also right, you do own the phone, but nothing in the gpl that Verizon has agreed to involves unlocking your bootloader. Verizon locking their bootloader doesn't violate any law or regulation, and a lawsuit wouldn't even materialize. A lawsuit won't happen.
Again, look this stuff up before spewing things out you know nothing about. People here have tried to help you, and I'm sorry if one person made you angry. It doesn't mean everyone here is unhelpful and doesn't know anything.

Damn I missed a good one in here, too little too late. Some people just don't get the difference in sim unlock and bootloader unlocked

or root access, but now im just splitting hairs
i stumbled upon this little gem in my search for SIM unlocking my S3. Ive put an AT&T SIM in it and it works, but I just want it to be fully SIM unlocked. I know its kinda a moot point as it works with GSM sims in it, but the "unknown carrier" message on the screen is annoying. I cant seem to find a thread that has directions for SIM unlocking for ROMS after 4.3, more specifically 4.4.2 with the locked bootloader. I saw that yesterday they law to allow SIM unlocking for phones outside of contractual obligation was passed, so I imagine that any "black ops" methods of this that were previously not being discussed on this site are now back on the table. This S3 is not under contract, so can anyone help a brotha out??

If its a SCH-I535 you would have to take it to verizon to sim unlock the phone
Darn... I got it from a friend who upgraded to the S5. He saw my S5 and got a severe case of phone envy lol so the S3 (yep, the sch-i535) is just a toy, but I like my toys to be completely a fully modded. Its a shame that he did the 4.3 update when it came out locking the bootloader im still pretty surprised that there isnt a crack for that yet :/ oh, and will vzw give me any grief about the sim unlock since that law passed yesterday? Tough to answer that last bit, I know

Not sure but they are under obligation to make sure it's sim unlocked. They shouldn't hassle you but you never know

Well, I called them last night and the tech support dude acted like it wasnt even simlocked to begin with. He kept repeating the phrase "4g devices do not require sim codes" and I kept rephrasing the question and getting the same response. I even went as far as to tell the guy about the *#197328640# diag menu access process and that I had seen it on other galaxy devices but in order to access it, the baseband must be pre 4.3 before the bootloader locked. He just kept restating his stance on it being a global phone. Im not sure if he was just being a richardhead or what, but I guess ill just try a different rep another time... sigh...

If it works on another carrier then what's the big deal? The guy knew nothing about bootloader unlocking because mostly they aren't going to do anything about that.

Its really not that big of a deal, but it has to be possible. He didnt even acknowledge the existance of a star pound code to get into a service menu. Just seemed weird to me that he was that obstinate about getting this done

So a person had left their phone at work(which is totally unreal that somebody would forget a $500+ phone) 8/16. So our policy is after 60 days and its not claimed then anybody can claim it. So as of 11/22 nobody claimed it and I ask to take it. The battery was obviously dead and there was no charger. I came home and checked the IMEI on Swappa and it came back clean. So that means the person who lost it didn't put in a lost claim for it correct?
I guess I could always put it up on Ebay or something.
I charged it when I got in, and it was locked with a Knock code, so I guess I can just wipe it. There was no memory card but a sim
Contact the carrier. They can contact the owner through the sim information

Wow you sound kind of sh**ty. You never thought to take it to the freaking carrier? You know d**n well they would know exactly whose phone it is. The person may not have known about having your IMEI blacklisted when you lose a phone. You were just trying to get a free phone. I hope you lose your phone one day and no one bothers to return it to your carrier. I apologize for the rudeness of this post, but you sir, are an a*shole.
P.S. Edited for language because people like you need to find a different site to troll

Wow guy lol. You seem awful hurt right now. Ok for 1 I'm no troll. I been here long enough and active enough for that not to happen. 2. I'm on a totally different carrier and totally different phone, I don't need it and 3 even if I did lose my Note, I would've filed a claim with insurance and if I didnt have insurance I would've called the carrier months ago. keyword in that was MONTHS ago. You act like you never found anything before, and technically I didn't find it, we waited it out. So insult me all you want
Oh and fyi the right thing was done. I was able to get the phone number last nite and had it looked up and I retrieved their email and emailed them .
Im done explaining myself to you, which really I shouldn't have anyway
Mods please close thread. All handled now

Just don't like hearing about someone taking advantage of a situation when they know better. Also, according to your post to thanks ratio, you don't seem too helpful, so I shouldn't have expected different. Don't post about you trying to get a free phone from someone on a site that is meant to help people with their devices. Sorry for the rudeness, I am a crude individual, but I'm sure no one would want this to happen to them. And just because someone may not have the common sense to report the phone lost or stolen does not mean they deserve to have it taken. I agree though, the mods should close this thread as the right decision was made in the end, and for that, I commend you.
I misplaced my nexus 5 some months ago and I blacklisted it with my carrier. To this day I haven't received any information to where it is. I still hope somebody "does the right thing" and returns it to att instead of keeping it.

Anything special i have to do? should i call my bank to cancel my card that's linked to samsung pay or is there no point?
But just for curiosity, what do theives do with stolen phones that are locked.
I have fingerprint/pattern lock on it so hopefully they can't unlock it.

Oh Man, i am so sorry for this. I have been seeing your posts here and there sorry that your phone got stolen. You can also try Google's find my phone utility see if you can track those thieves. Heard there are a lot of surveillance cams in UK ..may be they will be caught soon. Will you be able to retrieve the costs otherwise ?

Go to Samsung find my mobile it doesn't matter if they turned the location off or not Samsung has a way of turning it back on now to find the phone.. At least it did to mine because I had the location turned off and I used my Note 8 to test out the find my mobile and it turned the location on by itself and accurately pinpointed the phone!
Vid can still reveal the critical eye to eye to nose measurements as well as gait. If they're on a crime spree they may screw up.
If you have the serial number see if Samsung keeps a list of stolen phones. Canon does for cams and lens.
Police as well of course.

You've had a pin or a finger print set up right? So at least if they turned it off and can't get back in I don't believe they be able to do anything with it, especially if you blacklist the IMEI which you should defly do.

They're going to turn it back on some time soon trust me on that! Thieves who steal sh!t can't help themselves, especially when they steal something expensive and nice looking because they've just got to show it off to family and friends! Best to always keep it with you if not in a secure spot.
Where I'm at they'll steal anything that's not anchored with concrete.
I wear cargo pants, a vest pocket sometimes and have a belt clip as well.
Choose a carry method that's easy and convenient so you use it. Best to keep it out of sight.
The perps know you're going to get another one... once bitten, twice shy.

I just saw someone posting something about Chimera tool and i ended up reading about it. While I knew that its possible to change IMEI, i didnt know that it has become so easy now. You better claim that insurance as i am pretty sure that those thieves will use some tool like that to change IMEI and Reset the software.

And also report your IMEI to Samsung as being stolen so they can blacklist it.
