Remap Key Buttons - LG G Pro 2

I've been around the Android scene a long time and don't usually ask much questions in setting up my phone. However, in my lurking, I sometimes forget that not everyone is like me. So I came across a question about changing our phone's buttons. As long as you have root access, you can change the layouts yourself.
Step 1: Have an app that can explore your system files, like root explorer.
Step 2: Access path folder --- system/usr/keylayout
There should be multiple files in this folder. The generic.kl is the phone's default key layout. The others can be modified too, but it's this file that the o/s reads off initially.
There ya go. Hope it helps some of you guys.

Work around for AT&T Fuse PTT button assignment.

If you want to use that PTT button for something on your AT&T Fuze without buying software to do it, follow my instructions below.
Warning. Editing the registry can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. I suggest backing up your device before starting this. It isn't at all complicated, but mistakes can have unintended results. This will disable PTT.
-Set your PTT button to <None> in Start, Settings, Buttons (un-needed step)
-In registry export or delete: HKCU\Software\HTC\PTT and HKLM/Services/PTT.
-Rename Windows\PTT to something else (you can't delete it...yet)
-Create a blank file called PTT in \Windows\, set the properties to System, Read Only
If you happen to go into Start, Settings, Buttons and try to assign the button there to something, the PTT directory you just renamed will get recreated. This Null file will prevent the directory from being recreated due to a name conflict.
-Create two shortcut links: short_PTT.lnk, and long_PTT.lnk in \Windows\, that point to the apps you want to run for each of those types of presses. For example: "\Windows\Camera.exe"
-Power Off
-Power On
-Your PTT button should now be functional without any errors, or PTT service messages.
-A short press will run whatever you have defined in short_PTT.lnk (I have it set to voice command: "\windows\VoiceCMD.exe" -min
-A long press will run whatever you have defined in long_PTT.lnk (I have it set to the camera: "\Windows\Camera.exe"
I used Total Commander for all registry and file operations. Assignments stick after soft resets and power off reboots. Setting the Button under Start, Settings, Buttons will have no effect. As a matter of cleanup you can go back and delete the folder you renamed in step3 if you want.
Other hard button press shortcuts include: Long_End.lnk, Long_Send.lnk, Long_Power.lnk, Short_Power.lnk
You ROCK!
This worked like a charm. Thanks for posting!
Wow, great job, I will try it later. Thanks!!
So Awesome!
Can anyone explain to me why under Start...Settings...Buttons...1. Select a button It only shows Button 1(Hold). All other buttons are gone...is this normal?

Yes. Out of the box the Fuze only allows customization of Button 1 (Hold).
Little Confused
I'm good with all the registry changes, but if the button isn't there to choose in step 1, should I do something before these steps to make it appear, then follow these steps? Thanks, sounds like an awesome fix.

Yeah, step 1 doesn't really apply. I skipped it and followed the other steps and it worked great!
Sorry to be whining but I don't understand. The first post does not indicate anything else is needed. What do I need to see all the buttons within the winmo6.1 Settings/Buttons?
Okay will try with skipping part 1. Thanks!
correction
True, Step one isn't necessary it was one of the steps I had written down while testing all the scenarios and failed to remove at the end.
You will not use Start, Settings, Buttons for anything at all after this work around. the Null file will prevent PTT from reinserting itself if you should forget and assign something fro Start, Settings, Buttons ... or some other software install auto assigns a button.
Thanks Proto for your time. So I am having trouble following along, in an attempt to help others in my scenario can you or someone help me understand the following items?
Step 1 - My Fuze doesn't allow any button changes except for button 1.
***Solution***Skip Step 1
Step 2 - HKLM\Software\HTC\ does not have a PTT folder; however HKCU does; HKCU\Software\HTC\PTT has a bunch of values in it
***Solution***?
Step 3 - What type of blank file do we create within Windows folder? I already have a PTT folder that has a few items in it.
***Solution***?
Maybe TorchButton, TF3d config, Total commander, or J.S advanced Config tool changed these settings?

Step 2 - I also didn't have an HKLM\Software\HTC\PTT key but did have a HKCU\Software\HTC\PTT key. I left the one in HKCU alone and went through the rest of the procedure without any adverse effects. I think that was a leftover instruction also.
Step 3 - I had a 0KB file called OK.txt already in my \Windows folder so I just made a copy of that and called it PTT and then gave it the settings he suggested. Seemed to work fine and was easier than getting Total Commander to create a new file in \Windows. If you don't have an OK.txt file, you can copy any txt file and then just delete all the contents.

as for step 2 ... yes I could have goofed on HKLM vs HKCU ... since I already performed it I can't verify ... looking back at my notes HKCU is likely correct. The values in there are exactly what you are trying to get rid of.
as for step 3 ... you should have renamed the PTT directory to something else as the steps indicate. Then you are free to create a null file called PTT. There is no file extension for this file.

For what it's worth, I didn't delete the registry key (I was looking under HKLM) and followed the rest of the steps. Everything seems to be working fine for me. Is it possible that since the \Windows\PTT directory is gone and there are .lnk files for short_PTT and long_PTT that nothing is checking that registry location now so it doesn't matter if it's there or not?
when I started digging around on this I looked at the fix for the same issue on the Tilt. On the Tilt fix the reg removals were necessary. They might not be critical but if you will never use PTT I would just assume take them out.
Hey, thanks for the info on how to do this... one thing i've noticed is that when i don't have a cell signal (or when its searching for one), and I use the PTT button, even though its remapped per the instructions, a PTT error msg still comes up (its just a message saying "the PTT service is not available"). This isn't i huge deal obviously b/c most people always have a strong signal.. I, however, sometimes lose my signal in my apt (dead zone) so i was wondering if there was some kind of easy fix for this? Thanks
Proto + ITnv, you are awesome, thank you for your quick and kind replies. You are good examples of what I and all new incoming members should emulate.
I'm using total commander v2.51 and i've been trying to create shortcuts but they just wont appear no matter what I do. is this a bug or am i just doing it wrong. I highlight camera.exe then went to file--> A --> Create shortcut
then i named it short_PTT.lnk
after the wait, i scroll down looking for the shortcut and... it's not there...
am i just crazy or am i missing something... completely?

[Request] Moving Start Menu items into folders.

All the new ROMS have the ability to hold and move the start menu items. I dont know if its possible but there needs to be the ability to hold and move a shortcut into a folder already present and create new folders from right there as well. Its annoying to have to go into total commander and organize all the shortcuts every time i install something. so if i could just press start and do it, that would be really cool.
Thanks.
If you can't do it, you can't do it. I've never used a rom with the drag'n'drop feature myself, but this is stuff that comes from microsoft. Your chef has no control over it. Is it really that hard to move a link with total commander? Here is my recommendation: create a shortcut to the start menu\programs directory, and put it in the root of your device directory. It makes it a lot easier to get to the start menu in total commander (or file explorer), because you don't have to open up \windows.
What the heck, here is the shortcut. Just change the extension from .txt to .lnk. You'll find it makes things much easier.
Cheers
Thanks Farmer Ted for the tip!
I hate opening up the windows folder as there are so many items and it takes around 6 seconds - every time I open it.
I never thought to create a shortcut for programs!
If I have the shortcut in my memory card, even after flash it would make it faster to navigate to program files..
Anyway, I know I said it the long way, but thank you!

[help needed] terminology and a clear answer?

Im a bit of a noob when it comes to Android.
im more a windows mobile person however....
For xmas i recieved an android tablet which is an awesome toy! but ive had issues with making the widgets work on the home screen - they dont show up.
Ive read forums and forums all day and each forum points back to xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780828&page=13
Looks great, downloaded the apk tried to copy it to the system/app folder but it wont let me do it.
Ive managed to confuse myself after hours of reading so hoping someone can give me some ideas.
Ive read about needing the device 'rooted' i still dont understand what this is n how i do it.
Ive also read the file is to be pushed into the folder??
Ive downloaded the terminal emulator, file explorer etc... tried copy/paste, move, cut etc... all with the same answer of insufficent access.
The terminal emulator on the other hand i cannot use as its all touch screen with no hard buttons once running i cannot type into the program.
surely theres an easier way to load things into the system folders?
Sorry if its the wrong section or what seems a simple ask for some direction, I'm used to windows mobile and htc sence modding where you can just delete and replace files at will
Hey,
Root is like the administrator in Windows. By default, you have a user account, not a root or admin account. And therefore you're access permissions are limited. You do not have write permissions to most internal directories and are pretty much limited to the sd card, which is kinda like 'home' in linux or 'my documents' in windows. Also, cannot run applications that require su (superuser, ie: root, admin).
Rooting is the act of accessing the root user account, or admin account. Like 'jail-breaking' in the apple world.
How to root your android depends on which model you have.
For installing the widget app, as long as its an .apk file, you should be able to just click on it and be prompted to install it.
To access your widgets, should be able to log press on a blank area of the home screen and get a option box to select from. Or if you have a 'menu' button there should be an add option.
To use the Terminal, long press 'menu' and your keyboard will popup. Or click menu and there will be an option for the keyboard, also settings to change color, text size and others.

Also, in the terminal, it will use linux commands, not windows commands.
You can google android commands and get a list of common commands.
Good luck. Have fun. If you don't have some linux experience, it may seem like there's a steep learning curve, but most things will become easy after a little tinkering.

im finding this an incredibly steep curve - a bit too steep lol
I would recommend searching <(name of device) root guide> and then you will find your way around.
But, i don't think you need root, root is for when you need to install applications that you need higher permissions to control system settings. Also to install different versions of android.
Your problem seems to be only a bug. If you want to install an application that is not on the market, you just go to your settings and turn on installing from unknown sources.
You don't need to put it in system apps, the apk is like an .exe, just put it on your sd card, install a file manager program like ASTRO, and then open that app, go to the directory you transfered the file, and click it, ASTRO will give you the ability to install it.

I dont think rooting is essential to do this but from what ive read - it helps.
the app in question is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780828
this should replace the file on my system which doesnt work. unless anyone has a suggestion to get the same item by installing an apk to achieve as per the instructions state "copy into system/app and set permissions"

Custom sounds [for any rom]

Hey all, this is my first post here, but I've figured out a way to get custom sounds on ANY ROM imaginable. It requires ROOT access, which if you need assistance acquiring root, all you have to do is search here on XDA for it. If it's able to be rooted, it's been done, and there's step-by-step instructions on how to do it.
ANYWAYS, to get custom sounds, i.e. lock, touch, unlock, charge, etc, you need to download a root file explorer. The one I'll be using for this tutorial is Root Browser Lite. It's free, and useful for doing what we need to do.
First of all, I will tell you that I am in NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM responsible if you screw up your phone by not following these instructions to the "T."
After you install Root Browser, you'll navigate to system, media, audio, ui, and browse around for the files you want to change. For me, I'm using the Clones|Drones V4 ROM, which is absolutely fantastic. Once you find the sound file you want to change, simply find a clip online, I recommend .WAV or .MP3 format, you rename it to the EXACT file name of your original sound file, including the extension. Make a backup of your existing sound file elsewhere, preferably on your computer. Upload the NEW sound file to your sdcard/usb storage, then eject from your computer.
Here's where it gets interesting. Open up your file browser, navigate to sdcard. At the bottom, you should see your new sound file! Long press on it, select COPY, press the HOME icon IN THE FILE BROWSER, NOT YOUR PHONE, then navigate your way back to system, media, audio, ui.
Once you're back into the ui folder, delete your original file by long pressing and selecting delete. You will need to grant y our file explorer root access to continue. Towards the bottom of your screen, you should see a button labelled Paste Here. You're going to press that, reboot your phone, and voila! Custom sound heaven!
ENJOY!
If I've helped you in any way, feel free to buy me a beer or hit the thanks button. I look forward to any new guides I can post on here, and am up for suggestions!

Glad to see that your first post is a very constructive and although quite known already (I still think its great), very helpful and could allow new modders a taste of the rooting world.
Kudos to you!

Hey, I do my best, and I'm wanting to eventually get into developing, but I'm taking baby steps first lol. Starting with minor tweaks is a good place to begin, IMO. Thanks for the compliment.

How To: Remap QWERTY Keys [root]

Hey guys, so this is my first how to for the Photon Q (I just recently got the phone) so don't be too harsh on me.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I was really hoping for a search button on the keyboard, and when I saw the sym button I thought "Well that was convenient! now to remap it!"
So here's how it's done.
-Download a text editor (I use Jota, it's free in the play store) and a root explorer.
-Navigate your way to /system->usr->keylayout and copy the keypad_8960.kl file to your sdcard.
-make a copy of this file as a backup somewhere.
-open your text app, then open the keypad_8960.kl file.
-navigate to key 100, or search for "sym" (minus quotes)
-erase SYM, and write SEARCH.
-Save/close the file.
-Copy the new file back to the keylayout folder and overwrite the old file.
-Make sure the file has rw-rw-r permissions, juuuust in case something got messed up while messing with the file.
-Reboot your phone, listen to some Steve Aoki, then enjoy your sweet new search key!
This was probably listed somewhere else, in which case I must apolamagize, but I searched everywhere for this and couldn't find it, so I did this myself. Still, I take no credit, and simply want to give back to the XDA community. Also, you can search this forum for a thread to get quick launch/hotkeys working, like on the old school G1. (pressing search+ a button to open an app). It's awesome!
Hopefully this helped someone!
**EDIT**
Here's the thread about the quick launch stuff
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189496
good summary.
I think you can edit txt directly with the root explorer, without bothering to install Jota.
Just long click the file you want to edit, and you can see the appropriate option.

This is true! I always used Jota because of the really nice search function, and because I use a generic free root explorer
Or don't install any apps, and just adb push/pull
At any rate, nicely done. Thanks!
Hi guys, I am using CM10. Is it possible to remap the keyboard in order to let me select text by using shift+cursor (the arrows)? Right now, using shift+arrows just outputs the following characters: <,>,^,|, which I don't need. Before CM10, on stock rom, shift arrow used to let me select letter (shift+left or right arrow), or the whole text towards the left or right (shift + up arrow, shift + down arrow): how do I resume this behaviour in my physical qwerty?
Thanks!
Tony
