How To: Remap QWERTY Keys [root] - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Hey guys, so this is my first how to for the Photon Q (I just recently got the phone) so don't be too harsh on me.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I was really hoping for a search button on the keyboard, and when I saw the sym button I thought "Well that was convenient! now to remap it!"
So here's how it's done.
-Download a text editor (I use Jota, it's free in the play store) and a root explorer.
-Navigate your way to /system->usr->keylayout and copy the keypad_8960.kl file to your sdcard.
-make a copy of this file as a backup somewhere.
-open your text app, then open the keypad_8960.kl file.
-navigate to key 100, or search for "sym" (minus quotes)
-erase SYM, and write SEARCH.
-Save/close the file.
-Copy the new file back to the keylayout folder and overwrite the old file.
-Make sure the file has rw-rw-r permissions, juuuust in case something got messed up while messing with the file.
-Reboot your phone, listen to some Steve Aoki, then enjoy your sweet new search key!
This was probably listed somewhere else, in which case I must apolamagize, but I searched everywhere for this and couldn't find it, so I did this myself. Still, I take no credit, and simply want to give back to the XDA community. Also, you can search this forum for a thread to get quick launch/hotkeys working, like on the old school G1. (pressing search+ a button to open an app). It's awesome!
Hopefully this helped someone!
**EDIT**
Here's the thread about the quick launch stuff
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189496

good summary.
I think you can edit txt directly with the root explorer, without bothering to install Jota.
Just long click the file you want to edit, and you can see the appropriate option.

This is true! I always used Jota because of the really nice search function, and because I use a generic free root explorer

Or don't install any apps, and just adb push/pull
At any rate, nicely done. Thanks!

Hi guys, I am using CM10. Is it possible to remap the keyboard in order to let me select text by using shift+cursor (the arrows)? Right now, using shift+arrows just outputs the following characters: <,>,^,|, which I don't need. Before CM10, on stock rom, shift arrow used to let me select letter (shift+left or right arrow), or the whole text towards the left or right (shift + up arrow, shift + down arrow): how do I resume this behaviour in my physical qwerty?
Thanks!
Tony

Help needed - TOMTOM FAKE CURSOR INFO PLSSSSS

Hiya boys and girls! Ok... just put Tommy on my 650 but... i'm told there is a program called FAKE CURSOR available in which to enable simplicity when it comes to setting up, for example, speed camera alerts and the ability to manage them, among other things. Now, i've GOT the programme, read various bits and bobs about it via Google, but, i can't find any help as to how you assign keys or link it to the tomtom itself. Shortcuts needed maybe??? Anyone got a step by step gide at all please? Sadly after selling my Kaiser (lack of funds at the time!), i can't do it on that and edit back over any more.
Any help would be awesome.
Yes i realise you CAN use the tomtom without this FAKE CURSOR but... personally, i'd prefer to use it with it to save mucking about going back and forth if errors are made. Let's face it, if you type in a postal code incorrectly, you have to go back and start again as you can't delete the error can you.
Anyway, shout up and shout loud cus this one would be a help to us all if someone has the right answer!
Cheers, Steve

its simple
what i do is put the fake cursor exe on the storage card somewhere and have a long keypress of the voicecall button run it, and it works perfect together with tomtom.
remember to exit fake cursor you need to press the home key, but then you can press back to back to tom tom.
i have attached the fake cursor exe, and the shortcut to enable the long press of the voice call button (long_poc) to run fake cursor
at the moment the shortcut (long_poc) is directed to ""storage card/fake cursor/fake cursor.exe", BUT if you want to change it create a new .txt file and drag the shortcut to it, then edit the path, and then save, job done.
if you need any help, post!
PS remember to put the long poc file in the /windows/ folder!

Okies! Got all that after a few brainless moments with creating a folder called Fake Cursor (the space messed it up!!!) but there's just one thing that i'm not 100% sure of. Is it supposed to leave a 'snails trail' effect as you scroll up/down/l/r etc etc? Mine looks a bit odd! Ok it works and that's cool cus now i can finally set my camera alerts up and sort my COM port to but... well, it it supposed to do that? Just wondering!
Thanks for the help so far. I'm sure others may have found it useful when Googling etc etc.
Thanks, Steve
P.S. Ignore the Private Message! You'll see why when you read it! ha ha ha
Forget TomTom.
It doesn't support the smartphone hardware keys and FakeCursor is a crime to use.
Try Route 66 (Navigate 7) or Sygic McGuider (7.52).
Both work perfect on the Vox and have updated maps.

I used "talk1.3.nowifi.v2-signed.zip" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056793 and followed instructions for using Root Explorer
"Open Root Explorer and navigate to extracted files on your sdcard.
Copy talk2.apk and go to /system/app
Press Mount R/W at the top right and then press Paste on the bottom left
Now you have both talk.apk and talk2.apk
Rename Talk.apk to Talk.apk1
Select and hold the other Talk2.apk and press Permissions and select:
User: Read Write
Group: Read
Others: Read
And press Ok
Now press and hold on Talk2.apk and press Rename
And rename Talk2.apk to Talk.apk
go back to your extracted files on your sdcard and copy libtalk_jni.so
Navigate to system/lib
Press Mount R/W at the top right and then press Paste on the bottom left
Press and hold on libtalk_jni.so and select Permissions
change the permissions to:
User: Read Write
Group: Read
Others: Read
now reboot your device.
now open Talk and press on your own name where you can change your own status and tick the allow Video- and voicechat"
but it still only works via WiFi ........ anyone have it working over data??
Won't work over data because ATT blocked the port that the gtalk video uses...
yeah, that's what I read, but there were what looked like "flashable" versions that got around that.....without CWM though I didn't want to flash.......
CWM doesn't for if on the latest infused roms, so copy and pasting is the best way right now.
so I've tried quite a few ways and haven't been able to get google Talk to work with video over data and even over wifi the person on the other end can't hear me...........can anyone help??? i would love to "chat" with my 10 month old while at work and we don't have wifi here..............this is my android Holy Grail at the moment!!
Any progress on this for gchat?
Besides the only Wi-Fi video call problem, when you do make a video call ffc zoom in all the way to your face. Useless

Custom sounds [for any rom]

Hey all, this is my first post here, but I've figured out a way to get custom sounds on ANY ROM imaginable. It requires ROOT access, which if you need assistance acquiring root, all you have to do is search here on XDA for it. If it's able to be rooted, it's been done, and there's step-by-step instructions on how to do it.
ANYWAYS, to get custom sounds, i.e. lock, touch, unlock, charge, etc, you need to download a root file explorer. The one I'll be using for this tutorial is Root Browser Lite. It's free, and useful for doing what we need to do.
First of all, I will tell you that I am in NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM responsible if you screw up your phone by not following these instructions to the "T."
After you install Root Browser, you'll navigate to system, media, audio, ui, and browse around for the files you want to change. For me, I'm using the Clones|Drones V4 ROM, which is absolutely fantastic. Once you find the sound file you want to change, simply find a clip online, I recommend .WAV or .MP3 format, you rename it to the EXACT file name of your original sound file, including the extension. Make a backup of your existing sound file elsewhere, preferably on your computer. Upload the NEW sound file to your sdcard/usb storage, then eject from your computer.
Here's where it gets interesting. Open up your file browser, navigate to sdcard. At the bottom, you should see your new sound file! Long press on it, select COPY, press the HOME icon IN THE FILE BROWSER, NOT YOUR PHONE, then navigate your way back to system, media, audio, ui.
Once you're back into the ui folder, delete your original file by long pressing and selecting delete. You will need to grant y our file explorer root access to continue. Towards the bottom of your screen, you should see a button labelled Paste Here. You're going to press that, reboot your phone, and voila! Custom sound heaven!
ENJOY!
If I've helped you in any way, feel free to buy me a beer or hit the thanks button. I look forward to any new guides I can post on here, and am up for suggestions!

Glad to see that your first post is a very constructive and although quite known already (I still think its great), very helpful and could allow new modders a taste of the rooting world.
Kudos to you!

Hey, I do my best, and I'm wanting to eventually get into developing, but I'm taking baby steps first lol. Starting with minor tweaks is a good place to begin, IMO. Thanks for the compliment.

Remap Key Buttons

I've been around the Android scene a long time and don't usually ask much questions in setting up my phone. However, in my lurking, I sometimes forget that not everyone is like me. So I came across a question about changing our phone's buttons. As long as you have root access, you can change the layouts yourself.
Step 1: Have an app that can explore your system files, like root explorer.
Step 2: Access path folder --- system/usr/keylayout
There should be multiple files in this folder. The generic.kl is the phone's default key layout. The others can be modified too, but it's this file that the o/s reads off initially.
There ya go. Hope it helps some of you guys.

Need help making a simple app

I need a simple app made but not sure where to start. I want the app to have text explaining how the buttons work, one that says delete file and one that says replace file, i want it to delete a file in a certain folder on one button with a yes or no as the pick b4 doing so, and then another button that allows me to put a new file that is edited back into the folder with the same yes or no option, similar to how the trashcan button works on the new droidadmin app, but make another button that replaces the file in the same folder with a different file that i already have. not sure how easy this is to do. but if someone could help me figure it out that would be great, not sure where to even start on to make this work. any help or advice would be great. feel free to private message me on here as well.
thanks
also if more info is needed please feel free to ask me
any help would be appreciated
