Would you advise a TF300T ? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'me in the market for a 10inch tablet, i got one 2nd hand, no warranty, no obvious marks for 120€.
How is LP standing on this one ? Is all hardware working ok ? GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth?
TL;DR, do you advise me to buy a TF300T today ?

It is still a good tablet, however, if you are set on using Lollipop, you may have to wait a bit. Not for official, Asus release, that won't happen; Cyanogenmod CM12.1 is out, but quite few users report issues (see CM thread in Development section).
I personally have been using CM11 since it came out and the tablet runs great!

How is CM12.0 ?? (Original LP)
How is the NAND ? I remember seing dreadfull reports of slowing NAND overtime, like if trim wasn't working properly...

Running KatKiss Lollipop, which works quite well. For an aged tablet, it still has some life in it.

Another vote for KatKiss...

I just picked up a used one for 200 cdn with keyboard dock, i installed katkiss and it works great. pretty good battery life too
Id recommend it

CM9 vs Hydro 4.0

Ok, so I'm always torn when it comes to loading custom ROMS because I uses my devices heavily for work. That being said, I have a solid history of Android devices, some of which I have flashed and some that I have left stock.
HTC G1 (T-Mo) - CM4/5/6 (Deactivated)
HTC EVO (Sprint) - Stock 2.3.5 (GB - Deactivated)
Samsung Galaxy S (T-Mo) - Stock 4.1.1 (JB - Active)
Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE (Verizon) - AOKP Milestone 6 (ICS - Active)
ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T (WiFi) - Stock 4.0.3 (ICS)
Here's the deal, I love my tablet and use it heavily for work, but the stock ROM from ASUS just sucks. This hardware should chew crap up and spit it out, not studder and shutter every time I ask it to do something more than edit a text doc! I haven't used CMx in quite some time, but I know it is a very finished product which is important since I use the TF300T + Keyboard Dock for work. That being said, I am intrigued by all of the postive reviews and sentiments regarding the Hydro-Ponics 4.0 ROM. It sounds very stable and fast since it is ultimately just a tweaked version of stock. Can anyone give me a little Pros/Cons list while comparing and contrasting their experience with each ROM?
Thanks!
Personally I never used cm9, but I use hydro
Pros:
Super fast
Beats audio
Great battery life
Super smooth
Cons:
None

id say wait a lil bit, and jump on the cm10 train, tonight they are apparently adding HW video decoding, and so far, its the smoothest thing ive used on any android device to date
and after using both, i do preffer the cm feel, complete stock interface, nd everything is just super smooth
Thanks!
Thanks for the input guys. Thinking I'll go Hydro since I already know what to expect with CM. I'll let you know what I think

Try the new JB from term. Runs very good, too.
Done Deal
I flashed HYDRO 4.0 Base and then flashed the 4.0A update. Running great so far. I haven't had time to do a full check, but I will update tomorrow afternoon and let you know how it goes. So far I am quite impressed. The only little issue I am having is Titanium is telling me that I do not have root, but I obviously have root...not sure what that is about yet, but I'll figure it out. Other than that, the missing ASUS apps leave a tiny void, but I have better apps to do everything they do, so I'm happy.
It has been a little while since I flashed a ROM, but I was pleasantly surprised that almost all of my apps are still installed even after I wiped the system. I haven't tested all yet, but the ones I have appear to be working.
Re-rooted
I re-rooted using DebugfsRoot_v1.9 and everything is all good.
You won't be disappointed with HYDRO. Its fast and everything works. Plus the added JB ish animations is a nice plus. And the battery life is crazy good.

I have a problem with HYDRO 4.0. I have a three routers in home, one on each floor (two of them are the same, first and second floor). My tf300 with hydro don't see one of them (from first floor). My Motorola Defy see all three my laptop see all three, but Asus have a problem.
I downgradge to .30 and now tf300 see all three.

Have you tried the Wifi fix in the OP of the Hydro thread?
Edit: Scroll down this post---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28268345&postcount=3 (Under Add-Ons)
Yes I have tried, nothing helps. Only back to stock rom. I think I will wait to oryginal JB or AOKP ew. CM10

I used Hydro and it was great but I jumped on the Jellybean train and am now using CM10 found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776260, haven't had a problem, and it seems as fast/stable as Hydro was.
OP, does Hydro fully support all the dock functionalities? Having full use of the Dock is one of the few things I'm missing now with my tablet, since I've used CM9 and figured out how to get Supernote (Still working on getting the asus weather widgets and polaris office working). I would absolutely love to have my cake and eat it too, in the sense that I want a rooted/flashed tablet that still allows me all the basic stock functionalities, and more.

Absolutely full use of the dock. That is my favorite part. I have experienced one WiFi issue at one of my client's networks where the device just wouldn't play nicely with an AP, but other than that everything has been solid. I also noticed that my screen brightness and/or gamma correction seems to have increased, but I have mitigated that using a free market app.
The dock integration is wonderful and the OS is very very fast.

Thanks for the prompt response. Knowing that the dock is fully functional helps alot, and will allow me to switch without regrets. In fact, I'm going to backup right now and flash the Hydro ROM to see if I like it better than CM9. But I might have to switch back to CM10 once Jelly Bean is released to the tablet, because I'm assuming Hydro won't work with JB just yet.

[Q] 4.2.2 ROM for TF101

which do you prefer and why? Team EOS 4 or No-name CM10.1?
which is faster, more stable and with better battery life?
how about bugs?

Team EOS 4 of course... stability is assured here.. and with Timburu behind them, it gets even better now.

I'm using EOS 4 because I find it virtually flawless when used with Nova. josteink is doing a nice job with his "no-name" too though, and is worth a look if you're a CM fan.

My "stock" rom, ie stable/maintained/enhanced/feature rich, is EOS since early days of 101. I forgot about Asus' rom, and I'm grateful we got unlock keys for our tablets so early!
As the one maintaining the No-name build, I have to say both are good. And they are different. So it's really just a matter of taste.
Timduru is doing an excellent job with Team EOS 4 and the only reason I'm not using that and instead is maintaining my own build is because I prefer CM-based ROMs.
So I say try both. See which one you like best. You probably wont be disappointed by any of them.

why preview version and not the nightly?
does the kernel in EOS works good or should i install kat kernel?
update: nevermind. i'll go for preview with kat kernel.
i am using no-name for a long time now and i think is super. after reading most of the replies here saying about EOS, i will give it a try
Part of the issue is that people (at least myself) have been using EOS for so long that we are kind of entrenched, and EOS4 came out before no-name. Back in the early TF101 JB ROMS, EOS3 had proved to me to be the most fully-functional and stable of the TF101 ROMS, if (maybe) not the smoothest when it came to scrolling through the home screen. I tried them all and I liked them all, but just found EOS the best all-around,
The more recent builds of EOS 4 have been similar for me, very stable, everything that I normally use works fine. Maybe still a very rare screen tear here and there, but no SOD/RR's. I loaded up no-name a few weeks ago and it seemed to work great, but as I was used to my EOS4 set-up, I didn't give it much of an evaluation. It takes me some time to set up my tablet to how I like it, and while it was fun doing so the first 10 times, it's not as much fun as it used to be. I might flash no-name again and see if a data-only nandroid restore of my current set-up works, and give it a more of a run.
The only downside to EOS4 IMO might be that with the nav bar (bottom bar) enabled, home-screen transitions aren't as smooth as I'd expect from jellybean. The plus side is that I learned to stop using the navbar and instead disable it, using LMT pie controls or GMT gestures, both of which work great and allow for more screen real estate. My old TF101 seems to be as fast, smooth and functional as my Nexus 7 or my sister's TF Prime.
These guys have really made my $250 Black Friday tablet into the best bang-for-the-buck gadget I ever bought.
I use the No Name and i like it.
On Team Eos the gapps din't work after 2 installs so i install the no name and everything works best. :good:

Agreed, my tablet now runs better than most new devices with EOS 4. May see some RR if overclocking past 1.4GHz or leaving the SDCARD in the dock when not in use.
semi noobish
Hey guys, semi noob here. I currently have AR on my tablet and i want to upgrade to 4.2. When i started learing to do this i soft bricked my tablet by going from 4.1 to the ARevolution. I would prefer for this not to happen again. So is all i need to do is do a full wipe. then install 4.2 off sd card via CWM? then flash apps etc?
Just follow initial installation intstructions really. And I would recommend using TWRP instead of CWM.
You should install this first, via Goomanager, and when you see that you have that working, you can install this ROM.
Note: if this is the first 4.2 ROM you are installing, beware that you will probably have to do a factory reset to be entirely sure you avoid problems.

Sorry. I didnt download Goomanager (i am now) basically i had 4.2.2 rom on my sdcard along with gapps. booted into CWM recovery. Wiped data etc, went to instal via sdcard and said that it cant be mounted. IE i can install new room. I can reboot back into my original rom (AR). so i am going to try the goomanager via TWRP
No idea why i couldnt mount sdcard however.
This is one of the reasons twrp is recommended.
It works with both internal and external storage without any nonsense

---------- Post added at 03:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:52 PM ----------
ya that was alot easier. Thanks!
I've used both now and they seem to be the same in terms of speeds
But saying that the speeds are generally rubbish. I've no idea what is going on or if I am expecting too much from this now relatively old tablet and a new OS. Everything seems to lag even on a fresh install.
If the tablet is downloading anything then things grind to a major halt.
I'm pretty sure that ICS wasn't anywhere near as bad as this.
Running games and typing on the keyboard seems to be OK though...just seems to be normal day to day use.
Any ideas ??
Actually now I think about it the slowness only really is visible when there is data flowing. If I turn off WiFi then there doessnt seem to be much sluggishness at all.
Does anyone else get this?

Best ROM for TF700?

I'm getting my tablet Monday and I really don't want to have to flash different roms just to find one that works best.
I prefer Cyanogen stuff, I'm running the nightlies on my Razr Maxx HD, and would like to continue using it on a tablet. HOWEVER, it seems that Cromi has a more developed ROM. Am I wrong? What do you guys think is the best rom and why?

Cromi-x is highly recommended, but on my tablet it did run well at all. I would recommend going with cyan based rom, I run cyan on all my other android devices and i could not get used to the Asus based roms at all.
Currently running CMB even without data2sd like cromi-x had it way smoother and hasn't crashed yet. Plus has all the cyan features i know and love...

His rom, sbdags, is very fast and smooth. I don't know how are we going to accurately measure the speed of the tf700t. According to most of the testers, all the measurement apps are lied and can not be trusted but fast and smooth are even worst because there are no data or numbers associating with the test data to back up the conclusion. Otherwise, we can test them side by side... It is just my opinion and don't kill me if I am saying something wrong...

I have had the TF700 for just a few weeks, but go back Droid1 days with running custom roms. Current devices is a Gnex running experimental KitKat, and Nexus 7 that is the wives DD running 10.1.
My experience with TF is as follows get device, unlock, try to load custom rom find out USB data port is DOA, return device, get new one, take two days to get unlock app to work (just kept trying) rejoiced due to unlocking, download Cromi latests, flashed with DATA2SD and choosing Hunds kernel. Running it that way for about 10 days, getting frustrated and returning to CM based ROM (I have ran CM on GNEX and previous devices 80-90% of the time).
First off, let me say I may be wrong about my Cromi situation and probably should have held off posting my experiences. In the last 24 hours I have spent a lot more time on these forums and have sdbags 1:1 helping me getting Data2SD up and running on CM based 4.3 rom. I have been reading more of the posts instead of just skimming them loooking for what I need to fix something and move on. I have to say I am impressed at folks here (specifically _that and sdbags), their ingenuity and expertise (not mention willingness to contribute) is impressively and rarely seen these days in my opinion.
To answer your question about speed, yes, Cromi-x was fast, by far the fastest 4.2 rom to date on any device I have ran. I am sure this is due to Data2SD and the many many tweaks that have been made. However I know 4.2 is plagued by no trim, and at least on my Gnex 4.3 based roms are more responsive (less times hung with no response) than 4.2 roms. So first off I have bad taste in my mouth with anything related to 4.2 because of my Gnex experiences (probably wrong way to look at things I know). So going in I was little worried about 4.2 based.
Here is a list of annoyances with the rom being based on Asus and not AOSP:
Pulldown menu (pull up in the table interface) not being Googles menu (why change it)
Softkeyboard layout (trying to get the at symbol), no swiping (IIRC)
No cCLOCK widget (I wish I didn't like that CM thing so much...)
None of those were deal breakers, I had planned on addressing those eventually but the following occured:
First boot, confirmed data2sd was working, ran benchmarks, was impressed how well it ran etc. Installed my apps, all was good with the world love at first boot....
Sat it down on table (was in dock) rebooted, came back up to welcome screen, lock tablet was restore to factory. Perplexed, I reinstalled my apps, and went about my merry way (never re-ran benchmarks or really looked into the files system too much, my bad).
Next few days crashed reboots occurred randomly (maybe due to the Hunds OC kernel, should have tried stock kernel i suppose)
Finally one day a reboot occured and I rebooted back into my original environment I had setup in the first few hours of Cromi, my data from the environment I was in appeared lost. At this point the annoyances listed above (related to Asus, not the Cromi-rom) were too much.
I wiped everthing (even formated SD card), and went to CMB (why I didn't go striaght 10.2 I don't know). I have not had one single reboot/crash since the move, it is pretty peppy and I am getting really good benchmarks for not having data2sd installed, which is odd. If I didn't see how fast cromi was, I wouldn't be looking to get data2sd back as of right now i feel like 4.3 AOSP with data2sd has to be faster than 4.2 ASUS w/ data2sd.
Obviously, after writing the above issues I didn't follow good trouble shooting practices and perhaps made emotional not logical decisions.

Wow, thanks for the good explanation... What I said was just my opinion, I hope that you are not offended..
Also, there is a trim supported on Cromi X but that would depend on the version of the kernel. You can ask _that or sbdags to help you mount it if it is not currently mounting as an option...
Good luck...:fingers-crossed:

The only time I experience a crashing application is with boat browser. I leave the setting for flash set to always on and flash itself isn't a clean application. That is what causes my tablet to force close the app. I've not experienced the rebooting that I did running pure stock Asus firmware either and it otherwise runs perfect.
Maybe try using one of _that's OC kernals. While not as fast as hunds, they are stable and still offer a greater experience than stock. I haven't found needed to use the 1.8ghz performance mode in his kernals and for my needs the balanced setting at 1.3ghz works fine. The extra boost is there if needed.
Speed doesn't mean you will have the best user experience from the tablet. While hardware specs are meant to be the same for all TF700s, each component is different due to the manufacturing process for each tablet assembled. The CPU/components in your tablet may not play nice with hunds kernal.
a very good one

I prefer Cyanogen stuff, I'm running the nightlies on my Razr Maxx HD, and would like to continue using it on a tablet. HOWEVER, it seems that Cromi has a more developed ROM. Am I wrong? What do you guys think is the best rom and why?

Cromi-X will be a good option. I think it give you more freedom to install what you want a bit more flexible.

You are the first person to say that so must be something else you did to cause poor performance.
I'd love to get you up and running properly on cromi-x.

Hello and greetings from new user of TF700T.
I have been using this ROM for 3 days and I can say while the performance of cromi-x is not poor, it's not great either. Certainly better than CM11 (tried that before switching to cromi-x), but navigating the entire Android OS still feels sluggish. Not to say my TF700T is always slow, but tapping home button for instance, could take me 2-3 seconds before it starts reacting. When I open any apps, the transition animation is also sluggish, which is worse if I navigate apps from recent apps button. Lastly and the worst, Google Now and Google Now Launcher are very unpleasant to use, freezes on the opening and lags almost on the entire time.
I wonder if this kind of experience normal in TF700T considering the tablet is 2 years old? Or there are some tweaks I missed? I am currently running CROMi-X 5.4 Xenogenesis DEODEX.
For whatever the reason is, I'm still thankful for such a great ROM. It's the guys like you who make Android different and beautiful

Actually, it is a part of the Cromi X v5.4. It is working fine with Cromi X ROM only and never test with other ROMs. It is running perfectly fine with all of my testers except one that he had a weird waking up issue....

Is ICS too old

My apologies. I made a Noob mistake and put my 1st post all in the title. I am having issues with a lot of the recent apps I download. Closing at random, flashing screen and freezes. Done many searches to no avail. Reinstalled and removed apps. Rebooted pad and reinstalled os with last available from Asus. Any help or advice would make an old man happy. I may of solved my problem. ICS uses flash. I had removed it months ago. When I installed Firefox it didn't need flash. Going back to the stock browser it wanted flash. After installation all glitches went away .

You should try Timduru's KatKiss ROM, KitKat or Lollipop - 100x better than ICS
Hi ,how is lollipop better than ICS ?.Im still using ICS and after a reset it works ok. But if there is something better i might try it. I just bought an unused TF101 after giving up on my nexus7.

Try KatKiss 4.4. I found the Lollipop version to be slower than the KitKat version.
ICS was the worst, buggiest PoS OS ever released for the TF101
It turned perfectly stable tablet, into a rebooting, Sleep of Death, battery draining paperweight
Honeycomb was the only stable stock ROM
KatKiss 4.4.4 is the best custom by far

I know you remember all the people that were clamoring for the ICS update and then once we got it (after 3 HC updates that were perfectly stable), they were all......crickets. That was a fun time and I do miss some of those guys that frequented this device section. I still look in from time to time to see what is new. My TF101 is running KatKiss #36 perfectly fine and stable to this day, albeit now regulated to basically a media player. I should really look at the uptime on that thing. I honestly can't remember the last time I rebooted, but I keep it charged all the time and use it at least once a week. I do run into @just lou here or there and a few others that whenever I see them, make a point to say hello.
Glad to see you still supporting. Keep up the good work. That goes for you too @PRBajista.

Oh I remember it very well lol
Each time a new ICS update arrived, "This one" was the one that was going to end all the pain and misery, and fix everything
And each new update, it got worse, old bugs still there, new bugs added, until it got to the point where I couldn't even use the TF for more than a few minutes without it crashing
And god forbid you left it in sleep mode overnight with both batteries fully charged...because in the morning, the pixies had been playing, and drained both batteries, leaving the tab either off because of no power, or stuck on a black screen of SoD lol (And pretty warm iirc, if it was still powered up anyway)
Mine's running KK #36 too, still going strong, always makes me laugh that a huge company like ASUS got their a$$es handed to them by one guy on XDA

Is ANYBODY happy with their TF700T?

Hi,
I have been playing with different roms for years and I am still incredibly unhappy with my TF700T due to performance problems. I knew when I bought it that it had a scant amount of memory for a multicore processor and I believe that is the main problem with the tablet.
I'm getting ready to throw it to the curb, but thought I would post this as one last effort. Is anybody truly happy with it and does it consistently perform well? If so, what are you running? Any references to emulate the setup would be appreciated.
Thanks,
srt42

Have you tried out all of the latest custom ROMs like Zombi or Katkiss? Those are the most preferable ROMs that users like....
Have you tested out Cromi-X Resurrected? Please give all of them a try before throwing it away...
Yes, I have tried all but katkiss. That will be my last attempt before throwing this POS to the curb.

A lot of users said that it is the best ROMs right now, good lucks.....:fingers-crossed:
You did use Cromi-X "RESURRECTED", NOT Cromi-X, right?
I believe I'm currently running cromi-x resurrected

Did you update the latest patch?
I have a new performance patch and will find sometime to upload it. If you could hold off it a little bit longer, you can test it out to see if it is any better than the current setup.
What are the current issues that you have? I thought that it is running very reasonable speed with the Resurrected.....
Cheers,
LMK
Thanks for responding LMK. When I get home, I'll verify which ROM I'm currently running and give you an update. I was not aware of the patch. The symptom is the usual intermittent sluggishness.

It won't matter which rom you choose if you are installing to internal. The issue is with the read & write speeds of the internal memory. Install to a good quality high speed SD card & you'll see a huge difference.

Hey LMK, it still has the ususal TF700 lag. I am travelling right now and whenever I connect to a new wifi and apps pull updates in the background it is practically unuseable. You have to give it 5 minutes to catch up, then it works fine. The same is true if you disconnect wifi during sleep and wake it up - just not as bad if you connet to the same wifi...
I'll flash Katkiss again and give that another whirl, cannot remember if it also had the "wait, wait, I need to pull some data" syndrom...

I had the non-patched rom. I installed the rc2 and so far it seems fine. But, they all do and then slow over time. Thanks for the feedback!

I use my $100 HP Touchpad (running Android 4.4) WAY more often than my newer, more expensive, "better" T700. So disappointing.

Well, I must say, so far I am very happy with the Katkiss MM Rom. Very snappy. It is managing memory very well. I have been running it for close to a week and so far, knock on wood, I have seen no signs of sluggishness. I'll try to update again in a few weeks.

I own both a TF700 and a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2. This is hardly a fair comparison, since the Samsung has 3g of memory rather than the Asus' 1g and faster processor. I still -- perhaps due to my love of small laptops -- think the Asus TF700's outer design and snap-on keyboard are stellar. But alas... the innards are sad, moreso as the tablet ages. I still use mine occasionally, but that Samsung is my go-to Android (and it is getting nearer its end of life cycle). Asus came out with the TF701, of course, and ruined (and I do mean *ruined*) the keyboard design. Massive ineptitude that sent me away from them forever; all they had to do was soup up the TF700s innards and leave the rest alone. Ah, well. If I was buying now... it would be between the Samsung Note Pro 12.2, 10.1 (2014), and Pixel.... though the latter's lack of a micro-sd slot is ridiculous when looking at how well Samsung's tablets handled it. Final note... the Samsung Tabs don't have anything past Lollipop stock... and it isn't the final Lollipop version. But there are (as here) an increasing number of custom Marshmallow versions. Also... Samsung uses bluetooth keyboards but there are some very inexpensive ones (including used Samsung ones and my favorite, the Logitech folder keyboard). Hope this was useful...
Thanks for the feedback. This will be my last Asus tablet. I'll more than likely go with Samsung next time, as you have done. After several weeks, I'm happy again with this tablet. For those looking for a solution to the performance problems, this is the best solution I have found. The TF700T lives on!!
