Thinking of Buying the S5 - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone,
I currently have sprint galaxy s4. I was hoping to upgrade to the s6 when it came out but didn't like how some of the feature were missing, such as no removable battery, expandable storage, and the water resistant. Therefore, I hold off on it. I've done some research already on the trade off of the s6 vs the s5. So, I still have some questions that I hope people with the s5 can answer.
1) Does anyone know when sprint will lower the price of the s5 down some more since it was a last year model? It's currently $199 after rebate with a 2 year contract renewal. I don't want to buy it now if it just goes down to $50 the next week.
2) Anyone here use the hotspot app in the app section? If so, have you been charge for it? One user mentioned that it show that he used up his tethering plan.
3) Any reason why you think I should just get the s5 instead of the s6 that is not mentioned here yet?
Thanks

If you're eligible for an upgrade try Amazon. They have the S5 for literally $1.00. I managed to get mine just after Thanksgiving for free from them. It's definitely worth it. I know it's not the latest and greatest but a couple of advantages over the S6 are the removable battery and you can add a micro SD card.

Forgot to mention; I'm on SERO. Thanks code101 though.

Just order the s5 online at sprint. Can't wait til I get it.

Anybody on a Note 3 and thinking about upgrading?

Anybody thinking of upgrading to the note 5 from the 3? The only thing that really concerns me is the battery. being a power user and with the 10,000 mah Zerolemon on my Note 3 the battery is great!
What are some of your thoughts about going from the 3 to 5?
Is the 4 still worth looking into?
Reports are the display is more efficient than the 4 which was more efficient than the 3. and the processor is 2 gens smaller than the 3, so i would guess the 5 with a 3000ma battery will last at least 2 to 4 hrs longer than the 3200ma 3. And probably a day longet if you use that super power saver mode the note 4 has.
i worry about the all glass back. looks like a case for this one for sure.
Thinking about upgrading to a Note 4
Seriously, I am. I want the microSD slot, the removable battery, and no glass back. Here's something that someone mentioned over on the generic Note 5 forum, I believe, that made me think. He said that development on the Exynos Note 4s has really been slow. He prophesied that it would carry over to the Note 5, since thy have Exynos CPUs. I've been scouring CL and Ebay, looking for a used Note 4. BTW, it's true what others have reported. It's darn near impossible to get a Note 4 from Sprint. I called 2 stores today. No Note 4s. The guy at the second one told me that he had checked all the MN stores for a business customer. None in MN! My fall back plan is to get one from Best Buy. But, as a former SERO customer, I can only buy it at retail there. They can't upgrade my account at BB. Their retail price is $799. Ouch! What really makes me mad? A Sprint CS guy offered me, over the phone, the Note 5 on a fleece, I mean lease, a $15 monthly credit, if I would only lease it.

There's a few sprint's in my city has both the N4 and Note Edge. I wonder if some stores are just putting them in the back inventory for a while so the N5 train can take off.
I wish I could switch phones in general but cant since i have the Gear S and it will only connect to a Samsung Phone
i'm upgrading from a note 2. since subsidies might be going away i figured why the hell not get one. once my daughter turns 12 i'll be handing the sprint account to her anyways (still on SERO plus). i've give it 14 days and hope we get some action here on the phone... well, at least tethering. i really don't use sprint for much else since verizon is way better where i live. i may wait a few days before activating it when it comes in.

If u use the zerolemon or SD get a 4. I'm keeping my note 4 until the 6, if only the mistakes are corrected. Otherwise I'll look elsewhere next yr
samsung probably will never put an sd card slot in the note line again. you might as well get used to it now and enjoy a new phone instead of waiting forever.
i think samsung pay alone will make up for the few things the 5 has lost.
I've had the Note 2 3 4 and now 5 and each one has outperformed the previous. Just a thought.

kinda sad how little action there is in this sub. Hope we get some love soon.
Lol i still have the 4 at the time being
I'm definitely upgrading but it's gonna be to the Note 4 I just gotta have that external sd card slot and removable battery!

Don't use swappa.com let me tell you I ordered a note 3 last month from a very well rated seller. They basically faked the model and sent me an international model.

What.. Are.....u....... Smokin.......go away!
Samsung pay who gives a ****......
I upgraded from the Note 3 and I don't regret it. There are some things I miss but it's minor things. Not having a removable SD sucks but it's no big deal.
Major thing is that there is battery life improvement...it'll be even better once I can get the bloatware and touchwiz off...
So I decided to take the plunge. Went with the Best Buy offer of a free wireless Charger pad and a $200 credit after smart phone trade in. Traded in an old Sprint Flash(that had no value and it was considered recyle). With the gift card, I purchased an Otterbox defender and a Rev 12000 battery pack.
havent really played with or used the phone yet, but all seems well so far. Rooted it and placed on wireless charger pad and its been charging well. I will report back soon with some results
I'm just not sure I REALLY love this phone... not sure what to do. I miss the ir output, I'm really disliking the tw interface, I hate that I can't continously flip screens, nova does fix this, but then no monthly calendar widget, that I can't live without. I swear the reception just isn't quite as good, and/or it takes extra time to switch between 3g and 4g lte that the 3 didn't have. I'm not sure what bb will do for me if I attempt to return this phone... it's really missing the mark for me right now. I may have to talk to bb about my options.
I used to do a lot of multitasking. Spark sucks. If I had it to do over, I would stay with the Note 3 for now. I'm gonna miss talking while I'm surfing/downloading.
Note5 is a beautiful phone. the fit and finish is unmatched even by apple. if, aesthetics and prestige is high on ur priorities, this is the phone for u.
the lack of an SDcard slot won't be an issue for a while and u might have to do some spring cleaning from time to time.
the battery life is mediocre at best but the fast charging is amazing.
I switched to the Note5 because I noticed the LTE on my Note3 and S4 seemed to be slower everywhere, and congestion bogs were more frequent. I don't know the reason for my perceived slowdowns but at average speeds of 3mb/s made the benefits of simultaneous voice and data made it much less of a reason not to upgrade to the new spark network.

Worth the $1 upgrade @ BestBuy?

Best buy has this phone on sale for $1. Is it worth the 2 year upgrade? On a S III now, which means I give up the voice/data, but gain spark. I've had my s3 for a while and have changed the battery and still want that SD card access..which is slowly fading away. Plus, the note and LG phones are just too big.
I actually returned my Galaxy S6 because the battery life on it was ridiculously bad! I picked up the S5 for $1 buck @ best buy and could not be happier with my decision. The specs on this phone still compete with many other newer phones on the market and the overall mod development is really good on this phone as well.
I am in a little different position, but I paid 99.00 fee for my 2 year upgrade since I sell sprint phones at a 3rd party. I love this phone and had the S4 before this and like many others I wanted the SD card and battery pull. The phone is great and after 24 hours just to make sure it was working well I rooted it and installed MOAR rom on it and just love the heck out of MOAR and the phone. Spend the dollar and you will be glad you did...
What does everyone think the current cash value is for a brand new Sprint S5 ????
Here is my initial ad and price. Opinions?

Thanks in advance.

Is the s6 worth over the s5?

I'm happy with my s5 but thinking of doing the best buy trick to lock myself I to another 2 year contract on unlimited data. S6 is the only phone that looks good even though I'm gonna miss my replaceable battery and sd card. Any input as ease of root, experience over the s5 is appreciated. They also have the moto x 2 for $1 but its outdated
I came from the S5, and overall I am mostly happy with it. I do miss the expandable storage and removable battery, but with 32/64/128 GB I think there's plenty of space. With quick charge, I really wouldn't even need to change batteries too. I definitely wish I could swap batteries, but it's not as necessary with QC. I feel the battery life is on par with the S5, but definitely not better. Of course, the camera is fantastic too.
If you do get one, try to get one with OC3 or OE2 firmware, those are still rootable.
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Cool thanks. I'm gonna order the 64gb one hopefully it comes with rootable firmware. Gonna look at the note 5 as well...
Did you see that Verizon is raising prices for unlimited users? I'm guessing you did since you're gonna sign a contract. Good luck on getting a rootable firmware too.
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
You're honestly better off dropping off contract and saving a few bucks then picking up the S7 in late winter/early spring.

The point is trying to avoid the $20 price hike for another 2 years on a contract now. Saving me about $500
And Samsung pays the cell phone bill the rest of this year about a $300 value if I pick up the s6
That's true but like what the poster above mentioned, Unlimited Data customers will have to pay an extra $20 if they are off contract. Basically you're still paying something extra.
Sent from my Super Computer (1976) with Tap Tap Talkolution
So I just got my s6. And it came on 0f1 fml. Thinking of returning it.... I use hotspot a lot and it sucks I can't root and u lock the hotshot. I'll give foxfi a try though

[Q] Pre-order the S8+ from Samsung or T-Mobile?

I'm thinking to get the 8+. I currently have the 7 Edge and have been with Tmo for several years.
I've always purchased my phones from Tmo directly. In fact, I've always purchased directly from the Carrier I've been on.
I'm thinking to pre-order the 8+ from Samsung, primarily to save the $130 down, and pay the increased monthly payments.
I'm on the original Jump, includes 2 upgrades annually without paying any balance due on device jumping from.
Are there any drawbacks/downsides regarding going directly to Samsung?
Does Samsung check credit or does Tmo as before, and does my plan, including Jump stay the same, including using Jump to pre-order the 8+ and not owe any money on the 7 Edge?

Buying on samsung is not the same as buying from T-Mobile. You pay with a credit card or PayPal or Samsung Finance. Nothing to do with jump or T-Mobile, but they do ship the Free promo stuff with the phone.

Ordering from Samsung you pay the phone off in full upfront or if you use Samsungs financing you will have a bill completely separate from T-Mobile for your S8+.
And thats the better option to finance it separate so it can be network unlocked in case you decide to switch carriera

Buy from Samsung amd you will (probably) get firmware updates more quickly than wa8t8ng for carrier to add their bloatware and test it all before release for OTA
On the other hand will your carrier lock you out of VoLTE, WiFi calls etc if you dont have their firmware?
I am In UK and ordered from Smasung using their annual upgrade program £77.95 up front then £33.50 a month for 24 months (but you can get the latest handset every 12 months and extend the payments for another 24 months)

After reading everyone's replies, I'll most likely purchase the S8+ from Tmo, after taking all the info into consideration.
I have 2 other questions/comments regarding pre-ordering from Tmo:
1) Is there any other way to save the $130 up front payment, considering I'll likely Jump in a year or so, which is my average?
2) I like to have the time for transferring the info from my S7 Edge to the S8+ in the comfort of my home instead of at the store where I'm hurried and transferring all info can be difficult considering I'd have to hand in the phone to complete the purchase prior to transferring the information.
If I pre-order from Tmo via online or customer service via phone call, would that be the same as walking into a store to pre-order and pick up the S8+ in regards to using my Jump to pre-order, and my account remaining exactly the same.
This way I can transfer all the info in home, and then mail in my S7 Edge within the allotted time.
Meh, it's cheaper from Samsung, I pre-ordered from Sprint and it is costing me more but I'm gonna try and get the upgraded stuff for pre ordering for 99$ the headphones and SD card and stuff though... Either way it's all gravy
I have Jump with Tmo, so if I purchase from Samsung, I can't use Jump, meaning I'd owe the balance on my S7 Edge. So that's a no go.
Does the unlocked version get the same benefits as the T-Mobile version, like VoLTE, WiFi calling, same networking capabilities, etc.?
As I understand it, there is only one US version of the phone so all the T-Mobile network extras will be there if you buy from Samsung. I plan on buying an unlocked model from BB or Samsung once they go on sale early May to avoid carrier added bloatware.
Funny thing just happened a couple of hours ago.
I got a faint pink vertical line, from top to bottom, approx. 1/2" from the right edge on my Samsung S7 Edge. First time I noticed it. It lasted a few minutes, disappeared, returned, then disappeared again. I'm certain it will return. I did some research and saw this is an issue for some and is a hardware problem, something to do with a vertical driver, etc., which can only be remedied with a replacement LCD or device.
I purchased the device on April 6, 2016 and have the original Jump with insurance.
I called Tmo and resolved the issue within 15 minutes. Seamless customer service with very knowledgeable reps.
A replacement S7 Edge will be shipped to the Tmo store near me and will arrive tomorrow.
I'll go to the store within 14 days, pick up the new or refurbished? S7 Edge, hand in my 7 Edge, and the store will handle the rest. They'll help me with the transferring of data if needed.
The total cost will be $5.
Because the issue is a hardware problem, the Tmo insurance extends the Samsung 1 year warranty for as long as I have insurance.
I mention the above because Murphy shows up when you least expect it and Tmo insurance is worth having, for extending the Samsung warranty without having a deductible, unlike with a loss, broken screen, damage, etc., which incurs a $175 deductible.
Transferring data is a pain, and now I'll have to do it twice if I pre-order the S8+.

Interesting... the same thing happened to me about a week ago. Pink line that started intermittent and then stayed. Same exact experience at TMO. I thought about waiting and just swapping for the S8+, but might as well use the Jump I've been paying for
BTW, the phone I got looked new and needed to be upgraded to Nougat before I was able to do the Samsung Switch restore, so plan on some time at the store.

Not a bad idea, just not easy to accomplish in the US. While the odds are much better its not 100% that the international version wont be locked down just like ours.

I'm probably going to cancel my order soon. Was going to test it out see if i can get it early enough to make some cash. Anyone know or trust the Samsung.com refund or restocking fees? Online is different than chat and both are different than phone support so it's really hard not to just cancel it now.

Except for...... Samsung Pay and WiFi Calling. Those two things that matter to me YMMV. Having a warranty is nice too.
Yes, I wish I could root so I could get rid of things like the volume too high nag and the soon to be famous "Wipe your camera lens" nag.
But the trade off of Samsung Pay is worth it to me. Touch Wiz has matured now making the UI not so bad. I thought not being able to load a custom ROM on my Note 7 would be awful, but I learned to deal with it.
Deciding which (T-Mo or Samsung) to buy from is where I am at now after eliminating waiting for an unlocked or going international. The T-Mo store told me today that a Samsung purchased phone would not have WiFi calling on their network. Not sure I believe that so I'm digging more. The VR is a nice perk from buying from either over an unlocked version, I'll never be on Sprint or Verizon, so it just leaves the question of ch 12/17. Will the A models not have ch 12 and the T models not have 17 ?? Or will they be interchangeable?

Very true
I was at T-Mo store today and was told many things I'm not sure I believe. Basically it's tough to get the real answers.
1. Pre-orders must also have a post paid plan at the time of order. No pre-paid plans. It doesn't matter if you pay for the phone in full.
2. You must have the post-paid plan for at least 40 days before unlocking moving to a pre-paid plan.
3. S8s purchased from Samsung .com will not have WiFi calling
4. A SIM kit is $25. listed as $10 online
5. 10GB tethering promo ends 4/6
6. Credit check is mandatory. I've got a 830+FICO score I'm not worried about passing a credit check. I prefer not having penny ante checks on my record.
7. Phone ships 2nd day, web site says next day.
My current pre-paid plan is due to expire. I thought I would buy a T-Mo SIM/prepaid plan for my existing Note 3 (SM-N900A) to confirm good signal etc, then transfer the service to the S8+ when it arrived. I was told that was not possible. Let me count the ways.....
While there I also tried having WiFi and Mobile Hotspot on at the same time on their demo S8+, nope. This is something my AT&T Note 7 would do after the trade in. This is nice for me since it lets me give my Android Head unit internet access without having to manually turn hotspot/WiFi on and off every time I enter/exit my car. I found out that this task can't be automated by Tasker.
I tried getting answers from T-Mo chat and they blew me off saying I needed to call, but the office was closed.
SMH Do they get paid to make things hard?

Trying to get off my S7 Edge

Former Note 7 owner here. Actually I never sent it back, just went to Best Buy to pick up an S7. No longer making monthly payment on the Note, but I am on the S7. I never wanted the S7 and I would like to upgrade to the S8+. From what I understand, you cannot trade in a phone unless it's paid off. Are there any other options for me?
Is there a market for Note 7's somewhere out there? I'd like to sell it to help offset the cost of this S7? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
literally 0 value for note 7. Any reputable marketplace will block/take the listing down for note 7s.. also soon Samsung will make render the phone useless.
illegal to sell the note 7. So you wont get any money from it.
I dont know what carrier your on but tmobile has Jump (they pay off your old phone and you start payments all over on the new one)
And they also offer a trade in. They give your X amount of money for the new phone. If you own more on the old one then the trade in value your be left paying the rest in month payment.s
So check with who you have phone service with.
im on vzw. going to stop by Best Buy this afternoon to see if there's something they can do for me.
