Worth the $1 upgrade @ BestBuy? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Best buy has this phone on sale for $1. Is it worth the 2 year upgrade? On a S III now, which means I give up the voice/data, but gain spark. I've had my s3 for a while and have changed the battery and still want that SD card access..which is slowly fading away. Plus, the note and LG phones are just too big.

I actually returned my Galaxy S6 because the battery life on it was ridiculously bad! I picked up the S5 for $1 buck @ best buy and could not be happier with my decision. The specs on this phone still compete with many other newer phones on the market and the overall mod development is really good on this phone as well.

I am in a little different position, but I paid 99.00 fee for my 2 year upgrade since I sell sprint phones at a 3rd party. I love this phone and had the S4 before this and like many others I wanted the SD card and battery pull. The phone is great and after 24 hours just to make sure it was working well I rooted it and installed MOAR rom on it and just love the heck out of MOAR and the phone. Spend the dollar and you will be glad you did...

What does everyone think the current cash value is for a brand new Sprint S5 ????
Here is my initial ad and price. Opinions?

Buying the Infuse off contract.

So here is my dilemma.
I have been an HTC user for years. My Touch Pro 2 is hanging together by threads and needs replacing. Android is the way to go.
I have a Euro spec factory unlocked Iphone 4 on the way to me from my office in South Africa but I really do not like the Iphone form factor.
I considered the HTC Inspire but wanted to wait for the Infuse which seems to be getting great reviews.
I could probably sell the unlocked Iphone here in the USA for some decent money (they appear to be selling up above the $600 mark!!) and then use the proceeds to buy the Infuse off contract and still have some change so that when the Galaxy S2 comes out I could even sell the Infuse and upgrade to the GS2.
Does my logic make sense?
Any other suggestions?
I basically did the same thing except I had my iPhone for about a year before I sold it so it was fairly used. It was a 16GB black iPhone in fair condition and I jailbroke it before I sold it. I got $380 but I know some people who have gotten up to $450, just depends on the day.
I bought the Infuse off-contract from Amazon Wireless for $580, so it bascially cost me $200. But I'm really happy that when my contract ends next year I can either get off AT&T or sell my Infuse and upgrade to whatever the newest dual-core phone is.
I bought mine with 100 off for early upgrade. Trade in another phone, or sell for a little more and that brings it down more.

Your logic is great, except let me give you some info on what my situation was as it was very similar:
If you're in a good CraigsList city, which I see you're in SoCal... I'm in the bay area. Where there's a big Craigslist community like in CA, you can get pretty good deals on Infuse brand new. I bought several for $375-425 (started buying one for me and my friends wanted a couple so I ended up buying 4 total, haha).
I too came from iPhone 4. I had 2 unlocked iPhone 4s from the UK. The demand in the US for these is absolutely unbelievable. One I sold for $1100 2 weeks ago, and the other I sold for $1050 yesterday. Both sold on eBay. Keep in mind they were both less than 6 months old (one was a 6 week old white version, hence the higher price)... but there's a huge market out there for factory unlocked models. When the iPhone 4 came out, I flew to London, bought 4 and kept 2, sold the other 2 for $2000 each, so it paid off all four ... they're not cheap over there (about $920 USD), which is why they fetch so much resale.
I first tried the Inspire 4G. It's a good phone, but the killer for me was the battery, which to be blunt, sucked. I sold it and got the Infuse. I've only had the infuse for a week now, but the battery is much better than the Inspire 4G, and the overall performance is great. I did like the metalic build of the HTC, but I suppose I can't have it all, and the battery on the inspire was just a total deal killer.
Welcome to CA... hope my info helps Best of luck to you.
Many thanks for the replies.
Bella, thanks for the welcome, I am in SD.
I checked Craiglist here no Infuse adverts but there are quite a few on Ebay.
Another option would be to just pay the $199 to ATT for the Infuse and renew for another 2 years. Its part of a family plan so its unlikely we will change anytime soon.
I will put the Iphone which I think will be brand new in its sealed box, on Ebay. I assume when you sold yours on Ebay you did not allow for any returns?

Yeah SD is harder for CL because it's not that huge of a town. I used to live there.
The average price on Ebay for brand new infuse is at about $505... don't buy unlocked because it's a simple script to get your unlock code so you're paying for something that's free, hehe.
Regarding your iPhone.... yeah ebay on both mine. If you start them at $0.99 there's no insertion fee (hehehe, insertion fee, lol)... and it'll sell quick. They rape you on the final value fee, but it is what it is. I've been selling on eBay for years, and I never have offered returns (most ebay sellers don't)... it just turns you into a rental office if you offer people to try something then return it. lol
Thanks for the advise. I will hopefully the Iphone 4 in hand early next week.
I will then decide what route to take.
Hi Bella,
I just sent you a PM requesting some advice.
Thanks
I recently switched over from the Galaxy S i9000 which was a great phone, but this phone is just that much better. The Infuse phone feels smoother than my i9000 ever did with any custom rom or overclocked kernel, and to think we don't even have voodoo or any OC kernels on this device yet. It is definitely worth it. I upgraded my phone on the costco website for $129 which was a steal for this phone, best buy has the upgrade for 149.99. Glad i bought it, the screen is AMAZING.
I did an exception upgrade and paid $299, they added $100 for the early upgrade since it was less than six months out.

Buy now or wait

I regret buying one of my old smartphone since a new one came out within a month or so after I purchased it.
Are there any AT&T phones coming out this year that is similar or better than the skyrocket? (Hardware, lte, etc). Obviously there will be new phones eventually, but im more interested about this month or next.
The only other phone I was considering was the Galaxy Nexus but since that seems to be exclusive to big red for the time being, Skyrocket is really where it's at for me and the foreseeable future. I'm a huge fan of Samsung and while other phones are nice, I prefer theirs.
this was my exact question. I dont want to be burnt like i was last go around, I dropped full price on big G to buy an unlocked nexusone because all ATT had was the damn backflip. then i used my upgrade on a damn xperia just because it was a penny I want to make sure that theres not gonna be some tegra3 phone running stock ics4.0, trackball, front cam, led notifier and nfc all with a huge gorilla glass screen coming to att in the near future lol sounds like alot but its my dream
If nothing better on the horizon I will deal with the skyrocket all my sprint friends seem to love their galaxy s2s
With android, you can't wait until the a 'newer' phone comes out because they come out every month. Might as well start the clock ticking now towards when you can upgrade 15 months from now.
I was going to get the skyrocket, but researched the differences and went with the regular GS2. The LTE is nice, but if you use it much you are likely to be throttled (if you have unlimited data anyway). Unless you are constantly streaming movies over your data plan (which will get you throttled) the speed differences are typically not much or not noticeable. I compared Pandora and a few other things between the two and didn't notice much difference. It is a plus, but a small one. But the GS2 has a superior processor which means it is faster and more overclockable. At stock, because the skyrocket has an inferior processor, the two are similar in speed. Plus the GPU inferiority of the skyrocket means a choppy experience which many here have noticed. If you want to root and flash roms or overclock, you are likely to be disappointing with the skyrocket. If you want ICS when it comes out within a month on cyanogenmod, you will need the GS2. Otherwise you can wait for Samsung to update your skyrocket, and hope they are quicker than usual.
LTE is one small plus for the skyrocket, while the GS2 has many large pluses. I would go with it (which is why I just did).
If anything buy it at best buy, with the buy back program.
after a year they give you 50% of the cost of the phone (actual cost not subsidized) skyrocket is 649, so you would get 325 back.
After a year if you wish you can use your early upgrade (+200 or so w/e the new 2yr contract would be?), and in combination with the buy back money getting another phone would be relatively cheap.

its 6 months not a year to get the 50% back, then at 8 months its 40% i think and then for 10-12 months its 20%.
STILL is a great plan, i did this as well......and i KNOW a new phone will drop within 6 months. so i will have the option to upgrade at half the price( win win )
I work at bby its
6 months is 50
12 months is 40
18 months is 30
24 months is 20
Its a good deal but butter if you use it right before you upgrade

then the dude lied to me.........i mean i was only concerned with the 6 months though
so no biggie
Have to wait till black friday either way as thats when my family's iphone should arrive. Will probably get the SR after playing around at AT&T store again. Oddly enough, the SR got 6Mbps -8Mbps in the store while the SGII got 2-3Mbps. (No LTE). SGII may be overall better, but cant really tell the difference after playing around with it. At 125 Dollars, cant really say no to that price. Will gain around 80 dollars once I sell my old phone.
If you buy it within 30 days of a new phone coming out than you can exchange for a new phone.. I had an s2 for 249 and I exchanged it for the s2 skyrocket and it had the 149 deal so I got 100 refund

Contract expiring but I don't want a new handset.

Hey guys, I have a little issue here. My current 24 month plan with Vodafone(Australia) is almost up. I'm on an 80 dollar plan with 5 gig of mobile internet. I'm quite happy with my current plan already and I don't see myself changing plans or service. The thing is I am very very happy with my current phone which is the Note 3 the only phone I could possible replace it with is the Note 4. I dislike the note 5 with a passion.
The note 4's slight upgrade on the note 3 is not worth to get locked another 24 months with, Since I will most likely keep the same plan and stick with the same provider I was wondering what's my best move? I feel I should definitely get something for it. I really do not want to change my phone for anything on the market right now. Should I just get any of the flagship phones and sell it and go on a holiday or something? Any advice woud be appreciated.
Also here is why I like the Note 3/4 so much even tho it's older.
-Samsung amoled screens
-Big display I love phablets.
-Removable batter - My phone has never been charged or had downtime ever. I use a charging dock and 2 batteries, and keep the spare battery on my wallet.
-the specs on the notes are top notch. My note 3 can still out benchmark most of the other non-samsung flagships.

Why Did You Buy A Galaxy Note 5:User Introduction Thread

Hello
Ive had my Note 5 for 10 days now, coming from an HTC One M7 of 2 years 8 months and felt it was finally time for an upgrade. Ive been a long supporter of HTC products since the EVO 4G days but lately have felt differently about the company so it was time to move on and finally make a change
One of the companies i looked to naturally was HTC's main competitor Samsung. In the past i have said negative things about Samsung. Ive always thought their products were overhyped, overpriced, gimmicky and sometimes unoriginal and that they were lucky to be successful because of their marketing budget. Never liked the bloatiness, not customizable friendly and bland UI of Touchwiz. However i cannot knock Samsung for their displays, has always been the best in its class.
The only product i thought about buying from Samsung at one time was the Galaxy S3, but Touchwiz was the main reason i stayed away. Ive always taken an interest to the Note series but wasnt ready to handle a screen of that size. the phablet idea was ahead of its time though. While i have been critical of Samsung and said their marketing is the reason they are the #1, i will be fair and say they have been more forward thinking in their ideas lately
I actually was more interested in getting a Nexus 6P than a Note 5. However the Note 5 was more convenient and affordable for me without having to switch carriers so the next best thing after the 6P is the Note 5. Also considered getting a S6Edge/Edge+ but thats where the gimmicky and overpriced mantra comes into play.
The camera was the main draw for me, followed by the S-pen functionality. I will miss the front stereo speakers of my M7 though and some of the friendly customizations of Sense. Still trying to get used to Touchwiz but i like it or hate it the Note 5 will be my phone for the next 2 years hopefully i will mostly like it. Its about time i give Samsung a shot so i can fairly criticize it!
Right now i mostly love it but the battery life is a bit of a letdown, hoping Marshmallow update fixes this! The screen, camera, multitask window and s-pen is all what i expected and makes it a nice upgrade over the m7
I had a Nexus 5, i broke the screen. Was replaced with this device for $100 insurance deductible (not bad). Phone rocks but i'm living in touchwiz hell.

Nope not bad at all.
I hate how the app drawer is on the right but can't find a way to move it to the middle of the dock. Is there any way to rearrange it without having to find a replacement UI and therefore drain my battery more? Lol.
had the note 2 time for a upgrade
plus I got some cool gifts
these were the cool gifts
I've been sitting a year out of contract because the SD810 disaster and a garbage generation of phones.
Sprints LTE band2 has always been garbage in Phoenix AZ, so I was getting fed up with 3Mbit at best with full signal).
I was very close to getting a cheaper older phone at T-Mobile until this deal happened.
It was $50 at best buy, and their insurance is great. Also the $100 Samsung pay gift code to get a gear vr for free. The holiday gift pack is just a surprise bonus I'm also trying to take advantage of.
The deal was too good to pass up and I stuck with Sprint, I'm happy I did because the two extra LTE bands that I didn't have with my Optimus G make a world of difference. I will miss rooting though.

It might be too late to get the $100 coupon code, but if you do actually have it, here's the gear vr link.

After dealing with an increasingly slow s3 i finally had had enough of that phone. I was ready to throw it against the wall. I had that phone for two years plus it was already 2 years old by that time i think. Love the note 5. I hate the predictive text, mainly because i type fast and it doesn't always hey the word right and i have to stop and delete and retype...sometimes often. Otherwise I'm loving the phone, no complaints and not even rooted.

Question Upgrading to z flip 4?

Hi guys!
Just wondering what are your thoughts on upgrading to the z flip 4?
All the beans have been spilled on the specs and design already. So we pretty much know what will be offered by Samsung.
So, are you guys excited for it? Upgrade is a must? Or is it just mehhhh.....
On my side, I have no interest in upgrading. I'm still astonished that the cameras will be the same... I find no reason to upgrade. Only positive I find is the little bit bigger battery, nothing else.
So, what's your thoughts??
No, it's not worth it for me, I'd have to pay off my existing contact first (£455) and from what I've been reading there's nothing really ground breaking about it.
Most likely I will go to Fold4 ...
Far away from beeing rich enough lol
No way I'd upgrade, this phone is working great for me. Also once the warranty is up, i'll start to flash GSI's etc.
Just got my Flip 3, and with trade in value, plus $100 pre-registration bonus from Samsung... if the price for the 4 is right, I'll upgrade. I've only had the 3 for a short time, and while I like it, not having dex is actually a bigger deal than I thought it would be. I really do like to use it.
nothing to upgrade for
Beings I'm paying $30 a month for this AT&T Next Up deal where you can get a new phone every year I see no real reason why not to! I dont see anything better coming out in the near future! 12 x $30 = $360 I paid for the Flip 3, I think I got my moneys worth! Only thing sucks is that I'll probally have to buy another case for it but oh well! Might just wait till Black Friday (November) though and see if Sams Club (or Best Buy or somewhere) will offer a $600 in store gift certificate to upgrade like they used to before all the Covid crap started and I'll really come out on top! Free phone for a year plus a little extra cash to go with it wont hurt my feelings!! I used to play that game every year!! LOL!
Well it doesnt look like that AT&T Next Up deal wasnt quite the deal I thought it was after all. Seems you must have to have the phone half paid off as I had to fork out and extra $200 plus $60 in taxes. I've been wanting the Flip 4 and a little better battery life cant hurt so I went ahead and did it and and with the trade in deal their giving me the 256gb model and a free case, I guess that makes it a wee bit better, but $500+ for phone rental per year Im not quite too sure! Sounds like I need to pay cash when buying new and get the big trade in or go back to buying used models on Craiglist like I used to do back in the day! I also bought a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46mm from Samsung refurfished on Ebay for $209 recently (which turned out to be brand new from the best I can tell) so that makes it a bit better also! Oh well, like my old man used to tell me "you only live once!"!!!
Not worth the upgrade, it hasn't received changes at all, it's almost a copy of the Flip 3, but with a little bit better internals. The upgraded processor? You don't really need it, the 888 is already quite a powerful processor, the battery? Quite an upgrade, I must admit, plus the new adaptive 1-120hz display, it must have a good battery life. The camera? The photos on the Flip 3 are already great, and even better with gcam. Would I pay ~500€ for just a better battery? (Considering I'm trading in my Flip 3)
Absolutely not.

Well I lost the money I spent on the Flip 3 rental (but taken into account I'm getting the 256gb model for the price of a 128gb and a free case plus just got a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic for basically half off makes it a little better) but regardless I just got a tracking number for the Flip 4, its supposed to be here tomorrow. Oh and BTW, we have a whole section here devoted to the Flip 4, looks like quite a few folks done got thiers...........
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a 6.7" device, with a 1080x2640 foldable display, and a 260x512 external cover display. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which is paired with 8GB RAM and 128/256/512GB of storage. The primary camera features a 12+12MP, and a 10MP seflie...

Another interesting option that might be worth considering.........
I got to play with the Z Flip 4 yesterday at a T-Mobile store. They had it on display even though they're not shipping or in stock yet. Although the phone has been upgraded, performance-wise, I couldn't tell the difference between it and my Z Flip 3. Nothing stuck out about it or grabbed me to make me feel I have to upgrade. The phone is physically a little more streamlined but overall it's probably not worth upgrading from the Z Flip 3 unless you're getting the Z Flip 4 for free or at a drastically reduced price (Samsung and some of the carriers have good trade-in deals right now).
I'm gonna wait to see if the RAZR 2022 ever comes to the US and, if so, if my carrier will offer similar trade-in deals. If so, I'll get the RAZR 2022. I had the RAZR 5G and absolutely loved the external screen. I traded it in for the Z Flip 3 because the Z Flip 3 blew away the RAZR 5G on paper (the specs) and I got the Z Flip 3 for free with the trade-in but I immediately started missing that big external screen on the RAZR 5G. I used the RAZR's external screen just as much or maybe even more than the main screen. Even though there are now 3rd party apps to make the Z Flip 3 external screen more functional, the screen is just too small for me to use a lot - I'm still opening my Z Flip 3 for just about everything. The new RAZR 2022 is a massive upgrade over the RAZR 5G and the specs rival the ZFlip 4 but the bigger and much more functional external screen on the RAZR 2022 is the game changer for me.

Yeah I received mine yesterday and felt the same way, loaded up all my old apps and did everything except swaped sim cards and it pretty much felt the same in hand although I'm sure the upgraded battery will make things even better, allthough I'm not a power user and only had problems running down the battery just a relatively few times. Of course I had everything set up to save battery since I had the phone and always had a charger nearby for those just in case days!
Started crunching the numbers again yesterday evening and this morning and thinking about whether it was really going to be worth it, and with the AT&T Next Up deal where I had to have my 256gb Flip 3 half paid off ($1050/2 = $525) and give it back and then start making payments all over again on the Flip 4 (29.17 a month for 3 years =$1050.12) for a total of $1575 and it was absolutely not! I decided to return it to the AT&T store this morning and I'm going to go ahead and pay the Flip 3 off and go with the Samsung deal and trade in my yr old Flip3 plus $200 for the Flip4.
Will that be worth it? I figure with the extra battery life and better processor for $200 plus my old Flip 3 as a trade in it dang sure well ought to be especially if you're one of those who always has the urge for the latest and greatest! I do have to admit that new Razr sure does seem cool, but I've been using Samsung products for so many years and think I'll stick with them! Competition in the market for this new generation of flip phones is always a good thing though!
UPDATE: Boy they are quick, I ordered it a little before lunch this morning (Wednesday) and by this afternoon it was already in the mail and supposed to be here by Friday!
Got mine today. Samsung has a great trade-in program. You get a new 4, and I got $700 for my Flip 3 trade. So a little over $300 for a faster processor, and much larger battery. Easy choice.
I've read all the reviews, but I think the 4's crease is a little less deep than the 3. I feel it less. Otherwise I'm waiting to see how good this battery really is, as that was really my only complaint about the 3.
You can de-bloat it in minutes with ADB AppControl, kudos to those guys - removed or disabled over 140 bloatware apps Samsung installs. Which also works when updates come, the apps - and that stupid bixby and Samsung store/pay/AR crap stays disabled.
If I remember in a month I'll post back up with some further info.
I got my Z Flip 4 (unlocked) yesterday (8/29) from the pre-order deal. I have the Z Flip 3 (unlocked) already but the upgrade deal was too good to pass up. They offered me a $900 trade-in credit for the 3 plus an additional $60 off and a $100 Samsung Store credit. Cash out of pocket for the 4 was just $140 + sales tax. At that price I would have taken a new 3 just for a fresh battery & warranty! It sort of feels like that's what I did anyway. The 4 is virtually identical to the 3 in size and shape - so much so that the Samsung thin carbon fibre case from the 3 fits the 4 and the cutouts fit perfectly. The viewable area of the cover screen still fits in the case cutout.
I know that there a bunch of feature improvements and a bigger battery which I'll come to appreciate as time goes by but for now I'd have to say I'd be disappointed if I'd paid a lot more for the upgrade. Apparently Samsung knew this which is why they made the upgrade dirt cheap. If you don't have a 3 and are thinking about the 4, by all means go for it. It's a terrific phone. I loved the 3 and the 4 is even better.
I have disappointed myself... i went against my thoughts and beliefs.
I upgraded to the z flip 4
But! To make myself feel better, I have convinced myself that I got a good deal (swapped my flip 3 + 150€ to the flip 4).
And I got to say, the flip 4 feels good! Feels better built, the screen is brighter, screen protector feels smoother, snapdragon feels snappier and the closing of the phone feels more satisfying
The biggest upgrade I have felt is the battery. With the flip 3 I barely got through a day, sometimes had to recharge. But, with the flip 4 I go to sleep with 30-40% of battery.
So, my recommendation, if you get a GREAT deal on the flip 4, go for it. If not, flip 3 will get you through the next year to the flip 5, which should be a substantial upgrade.
I don't think it's necessary
Very nice job... Thanks for sharing this amazing Information!
