[Q] things to be aware of when flashing firmwares..? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have rooted my samsung S6 set using pingpong root.
Im plagued with the battery drain issue, so i will like to revert back to stock to see if there is any OTA updates for my phone.
But to do that, i will need to unroot and then flash a stock firmware to get the ota working once again, right?
Now how do i go about choosing a firmware for my phone, seems like there are many options to be chosen from in sammy mobile webbsite.
Are there any difference between if i were to choose my country against another country version?
In what cases will i potentially brick my samsung s6?

If you flash a stock ROM with Odin, you won't need to worry about unrooting first, as flashing will do that for you. You may like to enter recovery and factory reset just to clear anything that may be left behind though.
And as for selecting which one to flash, it's generally best to go for your own country's one, as they are usually optimised for your local differences (like the radio, I believe). The main thing to look out for though, is to only flash a ROM for your actual device model. For example, if your model number is SM-G920F, only flash ones for that actual model.
If you go to the general section in the S6 forum, there is a thread with the main selection of carrier ROMs there. Check that out

I really need enlightenment here

Hello,
I have a galaxy tab 2 10.1 GT-P5100.
the ROM is my carrier's ROM that removed the dialer.
Now I want to root the tab, and then change the rom.
I found a guide on how to root the device, but now I am really confused, because, I want the official rom and not CyanogenMod(yet :laugh
Now, I don't know what to do: I found a website "SamMobile" with many firmwares available to download, and I don't know what to choose.
I don't even know if I flash a firmware will that change my rom, or a firmware is a different thing.
Is flashing firmware the same as flashing rom?
Maybe if I flash a new firmware, I will have the same rom? is that it?
Is there a way I can change my carrier's rom to "stock" Samsung rom?
I'm really confused here:silly:
Thanks everyone who helps!

Its quite simple on the samsite use the check firmware on the top of page..,you put in your device, country etc and it will give you the latest firmware for your device.
once flashed root it.

Thanks it was really helpful but I still remained without some answers maybe you could help:
1. So for an official firmware I don't have to root?
2. The problem is my country latest firmware is ics 4.0.4 and without the 3g apps (dialer, ,messaging) , can I simply choose firmware of another country?
3. If I update to a firmware of another country will it also change the rom and I will have the dialer app back or upgrading firmware doesn't change rom but only the Android version?
Maybe I should just root and change to cyanogen? Will it add the telephony?
Thanks, sorry for the long annoying post.

1)I dont quite get this question?.if you flash Samsung latest firmware you can then root it and then you can modify as you have root.
or you can flash any other firmware you want from any country as long as you get the language.there are lots of firmwares from different country's that are multilingual.Basically install the firmware of your choice then root device.
2)i am not sure but for 3g you will or may need your country's base-band for it to work but everything can be modified once device is rooted.Example: install a firmware that you want but it is not for your country then flash correct baseband for your country.
or just install a custom rom that contains all you need..look here for roms etc http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203309
3)if you update it does just that it will not change rom but fix a few bugs or add something not in last version. It wont take anything away.it basically is a update for improvements.
hope this helps but have a good look at all the threads related to your device and you will no doubt find what you need.

You are really helping , I really thank you. I will try to explain you my question more:
For changing roms, you need to root device, and change recovery and then change rom,
But for a firmware updating manually by downloading firmware from Sammobile, using odin and download mode, I do not need to root nor change recovery?
What will happen if I update firmware of other country that has Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 over my country's firmware (my country has only 4.0.4)? Will it brick my device? or it will just update to 4.1.2 and I will remain with my same carrier rom without dialer ? or it will also change the rom of the matching firmware?
I hope you understand now because I am starting to understand thanks to your help
(So firmware is not rom!)

Firmware is rom. You don't need custom recovery if you flash stock rom=firmware using Odin. You don't need root to flash custom recovery. You need custom recovery (like CWM) if you want to flash a custom rom (like CM).
You can flash another country's stock rom using odin, but it will wipe your device. Wipe as in clean, not brick, if you flash the rom for your model.
And how is it that your carrier removed the dialer from P5100? Why would anyone do that? Are you sure your nodel is not 5110?

Thanks!
My model is P5100 - there is a sim slot. My carrier did that probably because of tax issues (If a device is "phone" you pay much more taxes in my country) , so my P5100 is only for the internet.
So I can simply choose another firmware(=rom?) that did not remove the dialer?
I also saw in the "Frequently Asked Questions - Galaxy Tab 2" here, that you need to choose rom with the correct "baseband"confused.
How do I know which firmware from which coutnry will fit me and will make the dialer work? or it doesn't matter here?
Can I follow this guide and it will work?
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/460859/20130424/galaxy-tab2101-p5100-android412-xxdmc3-jellybean-release.htm
(All I have to do is simply flash the official firmware with odin in the same way you flash CWM recovery for example?or it's a bit different?)
or the best thing to do would be root, cwm, and install CM? Does that unlock the tab? I mean, will I be able to use a different carrier's sim with CM?
Thank you very much !

I'd highly recommend going for CM, though it's my personal opinion, and there are people quite happy with stock rom. For me the performance of stock was unbearable.
If there is 4.1 rom for your country, you should flash it (preferably using odin), before flashing CM. That way you will take care of the baseband and bootloader problem. If there is no 4.1 for your device for your country, you should try to find a rom from a different country, but containing your country's region configuration. For example I live in Poland (region code XEO), and because there is no 4.1 for Poland, I've flashed spanish (or was it french?) firmware, that had XEO. If there is no rom with your region's configuration (unlikely), then flash 4.1 rom from a country near yours.
Bare in mind that flashing a 4.1 stock rom is not necessary, but users claim that it reduces the possibility of certain bugs in CM 10.1.
And as for guides, I'd recommend using those you can find here, on xda, as you will not find better devs and specialists.

Ty again,
I've looked in SamMobile official firmwares, and there are 4 different criterias:
Product code,PDA,CSC,MODEM. which one of them do I need to match to my country? I mean, which one is supposed to be identical to my country? I checked Poland and France, and the only criteria that matches is "MODEM", the rest are different, so I think you need to find firmwares with only "MODEM" identical, or I'm wrong?
*Is there an international baseband version, like there is on Galaxy s3 i9300 for example? Can I make my tab be used with any sim card of any carrier in my country like the s3 i9300? or it's a different thing on this tab?
I dont understand something: If for official stock firmwares, there are different configuration, how come the same CyanogenMod fit all of the countries?I mean, there is no PDA,CSC,MODEM choosing when flashing CM,
Or, flashing CM does'nt change your current baseband version and that's the reason?
And Last thing - I saw that there are 2 ways of rooting this tab:
1)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1657056
2)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957165
Which one should I use? because my tab comes with 4.0.4 and the 1st method says it's only for 4.0.3, so should I use the 2nd method CF-auto root? will that work too?
CM is just so goddamn awsome that it works on every device, no matter what country it is...
And what is your country? Maybe I'll find a firmware for you, because I seriously don't know answers to most of the questions you've asked in your post...
As for the rooting method, I've used Chainfire's auto root, and it did its job.

So I will be able to use it on any carrier? Nice! ? I was sure it only changes the appearance. (I'm really a noob that's why I still use this nick )
I am going to root it and change it to CM now
I'm from Israel btw.
btw, using download mode for flashing is only for official roms ? what will happen if I try to flash a custom rom with Odin and download mode?
Thanks again!
I've no idea what will happen when you flash cm without using CWM, but it is not a good idea to experiment with this things... Do exactly as the dev of cm explains in cm thread.
I did it! first time I changed a rom lol.
At first boot , the tab was stuck at the CyanogenMod boot animation so I entered recovery and re-booted and it worked.
btw, installing stock firmware is done the same way as a custom rom? Via CWM>Install zip from sd card? (stock firmware is much larger than CM 10.1 => 750MB+/- vs 150MB+/-)

newbie seeking help: which rom and how

greetings,
I recently inherently a Samsung Note Edge (SCL24). The phone is showing its age. It is on its default rom (4.4.4) but many things aren't work. For example, it is extremely slow; it won't remember wifi passwords, etc. I am hoping that by flashing a new rom I may bring it back to life.
The spec is listed below:
SCL24
Adroid 4.4.4
Baseband: SCL24KDU1ANJ3
as I am browsing through this forum, I am a bit confused as to the flashing procedure. Assuming it is the same as every other phones I have flashed, I suppose I would need to root it, install a recovery, possibly a new basebank, and then a new rom.
Is there a guide as to how to do this for this particular phone? It has been a while
any help, and suggestion as to which rom to flash, would be very much appreciated.
ps. I am not looking for anything fancy, but in the past I've always used slim rom.
regards,

Try a factory reset first.
done that many times
This phone was purchased in Hong Kong and other than the model number "SCL24" I couldn't find any other information. Judging from this forum, looks like there are many variations on this phone (vendors in North America, Japan, and others common in south asia). Also from this forum I realized that I probably need to update the baseband in order to flash any new ROMS (post kitkat).
Hence I seek your help,

Interesting.
Is this an international phone?
I tried asking about custom ROMS for my phone (don't want brick it) and didn't receive any responses.
I did do a Google search and didn't find much of anything.
I did download Marshmallow from Sammobile and have been gutting pretty heavily.
I guess after this much time, interest is fading.
problem solved, for now
As I mentioned earlier, this phone was purchased in Hong Kong and the model number was listed as SCL24. Following the thread on Project_ECSTASY (https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...rojectecstasy-custom-rom-galaxy-note-t3545658), I managed to flash the "Global edition stock rom without any bloatware from carrier au" using odin. The step I followed was:
1) installed samsung USB drivers for the phone (directly from samsung website),
2) downloaded and executed Odin,
3) rebooted the phone into Odin mode (vol down, home, and power),
4) connected the phone to computer via USB,
5) updated the rom through Odin.
6) once the phone rebooted, factory reset
I have not had much opportunity to play with the phone but it seemed to be working thus far. I have not had a chance to put a SIM card into it so I don't know if the new rom/Odin also flashed a new baseband and if the radio works.
will report back tonight,

Korean S7 (S/L/K) questions

I have korean S7 G930L, and are having some questions:
-(I'm NOT looking for troubleshooting, just want to know if anyone have the same problem) I still don't know why, but I tried many Nougat custom ROMs (Touchwiz based, like Batman, Superman...) and kernels for my G930L, things work fine, except for the back and recent touch button NOT working (press it, no response, no backlight or vibrate). I tried all kind of setting inside the rom, using button remap app, no good. Only way for them to work again is to flash back to stock firmware through Odin. Even if I just flash the custom kernel over the stock firmware those button stop working right after that. So anyone having korean S7 model, do you have the same problem as me? I've posted the issue on the rom forum, but seem like there won't be any fix now.
-Since F/FD model also are Exynos variant, I was hoping I could flash F/FD firmware through Odin to my L, but maybe it's not possible (too afraid of bricking my phone to try). I read somewhere that's because of the different partition size, and I don't know if re-partition option in Odin can help, because that maybe unsafe to do so. Your opinions?
-I also read that you can replace the CSC file with your country CSC file when flashing, while load the BL, AP, CP file of the current model. Can I do that? I also read that I have to tick the re-partition box in Odin, and my fear of bricking my phone stop me from doing so, because my country sold the FD model and I'm having L model, if I also have F/FD model then I would have gave it a try.
Only thing I can think of is if you selected on screen buttons when installing the ROM. Those will disable hardware buttons.
Not sure about 930F/D compatibility with S/L/K
As for Odin, I've always read that you leave all options default and don't manually check/uncheck anything. You should be able to flash whatever CSC you want so long its CSC within your models variant, but again not sure with 930F/D compatibility. There is a flashable CSC utility that supports S/L/K you can do after the fact: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/development/utility-flashable-csc-selection-30-t3392949

Do you have Korean S7? I want to know if it's a common problem with korean model or is it just me who have it.
For S8 ported ROM, I'm sure I uncheck the on-screen button first, but those buttons didn't work. It also happen with S7 stock-based ROM like Superman, or even just flash another custom kernel over the stock ROM, all the time the same problem.
I'm currently using the CSC selection and it works fine, but it also means I have to root the phone. I want a way that I don't have to root but can use CSC feature, so I can have OTA update or apps that require unrooted phone to use. It's clear that using custom ROM or kernel are the easiest way but not an option for me.
I'm on a 930F. Sounds like there must be a difference with the S/L/K buttons that F/D ROM's don't account for, can't think of anything else.
I would guess flashing CSC should be fine on any Exynos variant, but that's just a guess. I've got nothing tangible to base that on. I also imagine worst case scenario you'd still be able to get into download mode and flash again if it goes wrong.
Have you tried Marshmallow? Just to see if it works?

Don't know if I can downgrade to Marshmallow (I remember I've read that it's not possible), but for now I want to stick with Nougat. That's why I want to hear opinions of another Korean model users and how they deal with the problem.
I've gone between N and MM and back a few times waiting for Xposed N
So long as you flash all 4 files that belong to MM with Odin it's fine. You just shouldn't flash a zip to downgrade, since that's doesn't downgrade everything and will cause problems.

Good to know that. Maybe someday I'll give it a try. But if I can have Nougat ROM without problems like those it would be best. Those Korean model have limited SMS length, and cannot mute camera shutter sound which pretty annoying, not to mention those bloatware. And my phone have already tripped Knox, or else I might just live with it and stay stock.

Hey buddy. I am also very much thinking of the re-partition thing. Do not have the courage to brick my phone. Have you done anything since the post is quite old.

Noob question regarding firmware.

I'm currently running a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 with an AT&T sim card.
Model# SM-G930T.
Android Version 8.0.
Baseband Version G930TUVU4CRI2.
Build Numer R16NW.G930TUVU4CRI2.
I'm wanting to hopefully flash the AT&T firmware to this phone, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing it. I've spent about 2-3 hours searching back & forth between the AT&T forums & T-Mo forums but can't seem to find a definitive answer, or definitive guidance.
I think it's fairly simple via Odin once I have the appropriate firmware. But I just wanted to make sure since I'm flashing another carriers firmware on top of an existing carriers firmware.
Everything aside from video calling & WiFi calling is working. I would love to be able to use those 2 features & receive future OTA updates. Any info/guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
No love?
I'd settle for an insulting reply guiding me in the right direction. I just don't want to brick my phone throwing AT&T firmware right over top of T-Mobile firmware.

I am using it now and love it. Several options for the install. Can root if desired.

Thanks for the response racer! I'm gonna bookmark that page and definitely save it. Right now I'm looking to stay 100% stock. But I'll definitely go that route if I can't get any guidance on going stock AT&T.

Going stock AT&T is no harder than going stock for any carrier - here is the skinny, using SamFirm 0.3.6, the latest version of ODIN and a S7 of the Snapdragon sort (along with variations for the S7 Edge):
1. Automatic search using SamFirm - the easiest method - SM-G930A (for the S7 edge - SM-G935A) with a country/carrier code of ATT (both phones)
2. Once the firmware shows up, select where you want it stored on your PC, then select Download Automatically/Decrypt Automatically (this performs all the scutwork for you, such as checking for CRC32 errors, as well as separating the firmware itself so you can simply plus the parts into ODIN.).
3.. Once you have the firmware downloaded and decrypted, it's time to put ODIN to work; but before you can do that, you have to do two things; physically connect the phone to the PC, and get your phone itself ready to receive the files via ODIN. The ODIN part is easy - your newly-downloaded firmware is in multiple parts; each part fits in a specific block in ODIN. For the CSC part, you have a choice between CSC and HOME-CSC. Because I tend to make sure nothing is left over from the previous firmware, I choose CSC; this forces the new firmware to start from scratch. Lastly, before sending those files to the phone, you must enable the phone to be able to get them - you have to put the phone into Download Mode. (for all Snapdragon S7s - including the S7 Edge, it is Volume-up, Power, and Fingerprint-sensor (all at the same time)); a sky-blue screen will show, indicating you are in Download mode; this is what you want. Make sure your cable is properly connected, then hit the Start button in ODIN - that's it. (As long as the transfer is successful (which ODIN itself will tell you with a green PASS message) you're done the hard part; the phone will auto-reboot and start the Setup process for the new firmware.
Have at it.

g970n vs g970f

Hi all,
Yesterday I bought an S10e under the impression that it is sm-g970F.
Trying to flash Android 11 I discovered that it is actually sm-g970N.
Is there really a difference between them?
Should I be worried that some functions will be missing/unavailable?
Also, in the settings, it appears as g970F. How did the seller change it??
I have the same problem i tried to update the phone to the latest sm-g970f rom (figured if it's already installed it's possible)
And non of the roms flashed only when i decided to try latest sm-g970n rom it flashed however i bricked the phone and i have no idea what to do now.

So after digging into the issue since i have the same problem here are my conclusions:
1. The phone is a Korean Variant G970N it is probably a renewed phone and not a new one.
apparently it's okay for an importer to take used phones (from Korea in this case) and replace all the cosmetics but of cause leaving the used MB.
Now here is what you should worry about, in order to flash the G970F Fixed Rom (there is no way you have updates) they used a Custom Kernel which means the phone was rooted and now Knox is tripped (this not reversible).
(Download Phone Info from play store and check knox if it shows 0x1 then your phone warrenty is void and some features won't be available any more for example - Samsung Pay).
So what should you do?
Well if you still have the option i would have demanded my money back!!
One thing that i am perplexed about is how in hell is this legal?!!!
If you no longer have this option or you want to keep the phone you have two option:
1. Flashing Korean Unbranded Firmware (KOO) which is pretty good it doesn't have bloatware or issues as far as i can tell, i only found one down side for it, the phone language selection is small but if you only need English (like any normal Human) then you are golden.
2. Keep the G970F ROM but bare in mind it will receive no updates and no security patches.
I am still looking for a proper way to flash G970F Firmware over G970N for now i haven't found any internet source that will confirm it's even possible.
So how did those importers\sellers did it, they probably flashed it with a Cellphone Lab Software (not Odin solution) and used a custom Kernel to fool Knox, like i said before this is practically a crime and i don't understand how can they sell used phones as new and get away with it!!!!
I had the same suspicions....
I'll try going to the lab that sold the previous owner the device and deal with them tho it looks like I just got scammed...
Sorry to bring this up again but I've just had an idea following JerryRigEverything's video:
What if I transplant SM-G970F components from a broken device that no longer works or in use in my SM-G970N which is supposedly new.
My N device is now bricked for some reason I couldn't solve, though my suspicion is that it has to do with incompatibility with the SIM card I use.
When my device did work, it worked great! ...besides battery issues that are most likely a result of the incompatibility aforementioned.
Will this work? If so, what components do I need? I already know I'll need the logic board but as seen in the video, there are several more antennas, should I just copy what Jerry did?

Hi Vegetto,
I am from India and buy a galaxy S10e from UAE, It is showing G970F in the Phone's about but the problem is It is a G960N. Now, When I see in Sam Phone Info app there is Bootloader version - G970N, PDA Version - G970F, CSC G970F.
It is also a Knox tripped phone. Knox 0/1.
But if I see in Samsung code by typing in keypad *#12580*369#
it showing like all option in Odin:
BL: G970F
AP: G970F
CP: G970F
CSC: G970F
Does this means I can flash new Firmware on the list of SAM Mobile website, with G970F series firmware, It also showing in SAM Phone Info App that there latest firmware G970FXXSEFUL1/G970FOXMEFUJ2/G970FXXSEFUJ2.
I am in India right now.
Please help me, My email Id is -- [email protected]
It actually means you cannot flash SM-G970F the only roms you can flash are G970N.
Also if you want the phone to get security updates you must flash the original phones bootloader version, my suggestion download the G970N KOO firmware it's a global firmware. As for the knox it is tripped and there is nothing you can do about it.

How can I flash the original phone's bootloader version?
Where from I can download the original phone's G970N KOO Firmware and is it official Samsung Firmware?
How are they able to flash G970F? Is it custom Rom or do they use the original one?
I searched that my phone is using G970FXXS4BTB3 firmware which Vietnam XXV and same number found at https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s10e/firmware/SM-G970F/XXV/download/G970FXXS4BTB3/322678/ in an old update in 2020.
So see the attached screenshot, can I flash its latest version with odin. Of course, there is a chinese written in recovery mode installed when I go to its recovery mode for flashing with Odin.
I have a similar problem right now on my Korean S10E. Device is SM-G970N. I need it to be in Turkish. Only Themes item in Settings is in Turkish- very interesting- The rest is in English. App names are mostly Turkish Settings app name is in English.
The bootloader is unlocked but the phone is not rooted, Knox seems not tampered.
Could not start OTA update at first, I have upgraded a few versions from PC via Smartswitch. Just then noticed OTA also started downloading. The rest of the updates went on from the phone until upgrading to 12, there was a message like "All of the updates were not succesful." OTA update no longer responded. This time I turned back to Smart Switch. Update finished this time and finally I am at the latest version.
I only need Turkish in Settings. I used some ADB commands and an app called MoreLocale2. It did not work either. This has to be simple. Turkish exists. Keyboard is Turkish but not Settings. Quick links and most other things are strangely mixed English and Turkish.
How can I enable full Turkish?
