I am coming from the SGS Fasciante, so am quite familiar with all this flashing and stuff...but I just (FINALLY) got my upgrade to the SGS3 and I wanted to make sure of a few things before i go messing around.
I have rooted and unlocked and installed recovery...root works fine..even AdFree app works...
Using pure stock rooted..no rom has been flashed...Android 4.0.4 IMM76D.I535VRALHE
I remember reading somewhere that this phone now has some checker built in that will give an error that "Unauthorized software detected"...or something...if you modify the os too much...
Is this still true...? I want to remove or freeze the crap apps that come with the phone, but don't want it lock up the phone on me...Is it better to delete the app, or use a freeze program...any suggestions?
What about OTA updates with this phone?...do I need to be concerned about that... will it one day just deiced to update and i loose root etc....
Also, I flashed the DSP Manager.zip i used on my Fasciante..and it is working..most of the time...doesn't seem to affect Amazon MP3 like it did on the Fascinate...DSP Manger also won't stay on a lot...keeps reverting to stock sound quality....keep having to start stop player app and tweak DSP app to get it to tun back on...any ideas...?

You should only get the "unauthorized software detected" message if you attempt to flash a custom kernel (Or ROM that contains a custom kernel) when you haven't unlocked your bootloader, the latest version of ez unlock (1.4 I believe) will tell you it unlocked the bootloader and flashed a insecure aboot. Check out this guide and this guide for apps that are safe to remove or freeze on your phone (If you think you may need the app again sometime just freeze it rather then remove it that way if you need it latter you can unfreeze), also pay careful attention to the guides and make a backup before removing or freezing any apps. I personally use Titanium Backup for any application freezing or removing needs. If your running the stock Verizon ROM and your rooted there is always the possibility of them pushing an update along that breaks root (Fortunately you can restore a CWM or TWRP backup when you did have root, or use odin to restore the factory image). Further more, an awesome app by the name of OTA RootKeeper allows you to keep root even if Verizon issues a OTA update. I'm guessing DSP manager and Samsung's music player equalizer options may be interfearing with eachother causing the issues you mentioned. Technically this version of DSP Manager is for the international GS3 but it should still work on our Verizon version (As always make a backup before flashing anything). Plus not all parts of the Fascinate DSP Manager zip may be compatible with the Verizon Galaxy S3 once again causing you random problems. Well hope I helped let me know if you need more help .
About DSP manager...work fine in all players..including the Samsung player for flac files..but not for mp3...I did find winamp player works perfectly though with dsp manger I flashed..will have to try the one u linked to...
Edit: no change..appears to be the same zip...o well..winamp player for me...not as nice as the Samsung one...but...yea..want the better sound...

I agree, while the Samsung music player has a couple cool features and awesome UI most of the features seem kinda gimmicky like the sound alive settings, like you said I personally would stick with winamp, which is still a realy soild music player and the great sound and customization of DSP manager.

Yea..now that i can transfer my media player to the SGS3, my Fasicante officially gets retired..
There is only 2 other things with he SGS3 I am annoyed with at the moment:
Email and Gmail apps are ugly white versions...(special Touchwiz version I assume)I am not sure if there are blacked out versions of these for stock...I tried adding in the Email and Gmail .apk I was using from ICS for the Fasciante...but it wouldn't work....may just need to find another app from the market...
There doesn't seem to be any settings to adjust the toggles on the notification drop-down....don't need some, and want to add brightness toggle.......

You should considering rooting your phone and installing CM 10 or AOKP they both have customizable quick toggles and inverted gapps for gmail and you can get regular inverted email too.

flash a custom touchwiz rom such as beans and there should be a quick panel settings in your app drawer to adjust the toggles. Same thing for aosp...also you know where there is a guide wink wink if you need any instructions for rooting, unlocking, and flashing!

I probably will...eventually...but I want to keep stock as much as possible...maybe once the final release of JB for this device is out...and the bugs are worked out.
Use titanium backup to freeze ur apps... Great program, should be mandatory for root users and ROM flashers (imo) . As far as what to freeze, general rule of thumb, dont freeze anything that starts with com or has andy the android as the icon. Be careful freezing any launchers and definately make a nandroid backup prior to any freezing.
Tapped² from my I5³5
I was looking for this thread yesterday. I went looking for a comprehensive list that I knew existed but couldn't find my way back to this lol. This was in the Jellywiz thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31545527
Not my list, and I haven't tried everything to see what kind of results happen on what so play at your own risk and I would suggest backing up every single app you remove.
A feature of CM I always like was the ability to control ringtone and notification volumes independently. This is not possible with the N5/4.4.
There are some apps our there that claim to give you power over volumes, but I feel like these apps don't achieve my goal if the ability to separate the two isn't a stock function.
Does anyone know of a way to make this work or a framework that would allow for this?
Many thanks.
there is an xposed module (Ringer & Notification Volume Unlink) that does this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416768
but xposed framework does not support android 4.4 yet, so u have to wait..

best app i've seen so far for this is ultimate sound control (pro and lite versions available): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steinapps.ultimatesoundcontrol
it does require root, and has some pretty powerful functions. it was also featured in the portal a few weeks ago: http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...und-control-for-your-device-xda-developer-tv/
check it out when you get a chance.
I've been trying out Sound Profile which lets you separate volume but a whole lot more. It's a full sound/toggle profile app and appears to be working very well so far. What's really cool is that you can change sounds per profile, as well as toggles like BT, WiFi, GPS, etc.
It looks like Volume Butler as also suggested is extremely similar. I will give that one a whirl too.
It doesn't let you modify all of the system level type sounds like Ultimate Sound Control (if that's something you desire).
looks like xposed is finally 4.4, trying to figure out how to do this with xposed.
If you use xposed I know Gravitybox has this incorporated.

two thumbs up for Volume Butler
as a former galaxy family user (S2, S3 and S4) the first thing I've missed on LG Nexus5 was a manner to control the volume independently (ringtone, notifications, media). After a quick search on google I got in this thread.
My handset just arrived about three days ago and to be extremely honest I'm wondering if should I root it right now or in the near future. While I did not come to a decision I've decide to give Volume Butler a try.
Just install a free version from Play Store and it works exactly how it promises, it is possible to control ringer, notification, media, alarm, in-call and speakerphone as individual items and you can create profiles based on a schedule to manage this items. I did't play with this app enough (got no time), but it's seems to be a great try for anyone who looks for this functionality.
Thanks for share!

If you want to run ART (which xposed obviously doesn't support), I know Cataclysm ROM has a toggle to separate the ringer/notification volume settings.
I agree, Cataclysm ROM has that feature to seperate, based on stock with many added features, and still can run ART versus Xposed. Depends on what you want to do with features or if you'd like AOSP.
[NO root required] Profiles Plus app is working fine. It is free and works with lollipop. It is working like a charm for my Xperia Z2 and Nexus 5 to successfully separate the ringer and notification volumes.

Hmmm.... I'll try it as soon as I can get a (working) CM on this device. BTW,which recovery do you use?
Installed this ROM last night along with 4.4.4 gapps and its the best ROM I've tried so far!!! thankyou so much for your hard work.
I have found a bug however, using the app snapchat the camera is zoomed in and when I try to take a picture the app crashes and force closes, any ideas on a fix? I'm looking into it.

I tried flashing this ROM in an attempt to resolve the video issues I experience with 4.4.2, but with no luck.
As with HashCode's KitKat, all video processing that I can find (youtube, bowser-based HTML5 video, etc) locks up and fails shortly after a reboot. I just tried a clean flash - wiped everything, installed this ROM and then GApps, and youtube shows the same behavior:
Boot up.
Videos play fine
Pause video
Allow tablet to lock
Wake tablet
Watch in dismay as youtube times out and stops trying to play any videos until you reboot again.
Just for funsies, I tried this, too:
Reboot tablet
Allow tablet to lock
Wake tablet
Open youtube
This played without issue - it loaded an advertisement, allowed me to skip it, and then played the video I'd selected.
I then stopped the video, killed the app, and allowed the tablet to lock. When I woke it up and launched Youtube, the videos would not play, showing the same behavior as before. It's like if the video functionality is (or has been) activated and the tablet times out, nothing short of a reboot will fix it.
Has anyone found a fix (or cause) for this?

ive just tried to reproduce your issue but honestly everything plays well for me, and i personally never experienced this with Hashcodes CM either. If you can get me a logcat of the issue maybe i can dig deeper into it for you. just incase>>How To Logcat
Been way out of touch with all this but tried to flash this to update from an age old CM11 build and stuck in TWRP now due to error "error executing updater binary in zip" when flashing! :S Is this something I can try to fix from here or will I need to drop back to an older ROM and update my recovery or maybe move to CWM?

Damnedest thing - as soon as I turned on ADB Debugging to take a logcat the behavior stopped. I'll keep an eye on it and try it again if it resurfaces. I'll also try installing the other apps in which I encountered this behavior.
On the other hand, 4.4.4 is pretty sweet, so far.
UPDATE: Cannot update the included version of XPosed Framework. I get "An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed." This prevents XPrivacy from being installed.

Thanks very much for the response but after some headache inducing attempts I decided just to recover it back to factory defaults and I'll attempt to start from scratch tonight to get your ROM on my Kindle
My plan of attack would be use the QEMU tool for root, use Flasher tool to get TWRP 2.7 and then flash your ROM and GAPPS (which I will have already transferred to the root of my SD card).
My only concern is that I don't have a fastboot cable but when I orginally did my rooting and flashing about a year ago I didn't need it but has something changed?
Sorry for the pestering but its been a long while since I attempted this and there doesn't seem to be an "easy" option when it comes to the kindle compared to my Nexus 4 which was just built to be constantly reflashed it seems! haha

For me personally its best to have a fastboot cable on deck in case something does happen. I've had to use it a couple of times to get me out of a jam but when rooting and putting a custom recovery on it, I never had an issue and never had to use it . Its the same process as before, nothing has really changed except I believe updates from amazon to the stock ROM.

FYI
The only time I ever experienced this is when YouTube is installed as a system app regardless if I updated the app from the play store.
I usually uninstall the updates, remove YouTube from /system/app/, reboot device, install YouTube from play store.
As for html5 video in browser depends on the browser being used.
This is basically the same as my PINGUYS CARBON JB 4.2.2 ROM ported to the Yellow Kernel ROM base.
All I did was OptiPNG, Zipped the apks and patched services.jar with "Ultimate Jar Power Tools" to improve multitasking. Also stripped out the libs in the apks and added them to system/libs.
Added my little tweaks to it. Replaced the launcher with the Google Now launcher. I added the Lollipop keyboard (from the Google Play Store) and the Sony Walkman music player with the UPNP/DLNA Media Server. Also added a custom sound engine that will greatly improve the sound quality.
MX Player is included and has working AC3 sound using a custom Arm v7-Neon codec.
There is a load of extra fonts added and I built in a modified version of flash that has Hulu support..
KSM and zRAM are enabled by default with custom values.
zRAM size is set to 154.8 MB/18.75% of total RAM and KSM pages_to_scan to 1536 and sleep_millisecs to 6000 reducing CPU cycles and saving battery power.

Changed the base to 10.1.3 Yellow Kernel as this is easier to work with.
On first boot it will hot-reboot.
@PMikeP,
"I don't see a way to change grid size, add screens, change Home screen etc. on the launcher. It's not in my settings when I click the 3 vertical dots.
Similarly, I don't see a way to disable the Search bar/disable Search."
I don't think Google Now / Google Launcher / GEL let's you change any of that.
But, I *think* you can install XPosed and then use the GEL Tweaks module. I used that 2 or 3 devices ago, but haven't used XPosed in a while.
---------- Post added at 09:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:19 PM ----------
So, let me ask this,
If I have a previous 10.1.3 rom and make a back up through TWRP,
Can I do a complete wipe, flash this and then restore data from my other backup, or will that mess with the tweaks on this rom?

Hi FirePsych: Good idea not to clutter up Jon's thread with comments about Pinguy's.
Okay on the new Google launcher. If that's the way it is, I'll stay with Jon's. I'm not about to install Xposed on my aviation tablet.
I tried uninstalling the search with Titanium, but doing that hung the ROM on reboot.
I don't know the answer to your last question. Of course you could give it try. This ROM does seem to do some preprocessing at boot, per my problem with Link2SD hanging the boot.

Why not just install Nova or Apex Launcher?
Or do what FirePsych said. Install Xposed GEL Settings.
Link2SD issues is probably due to system/etc/init.d/08setperm. Delete the file and see if that sorts it. But the way it sounds is you gave the ROM 3 minutes then removed it, so giving this advice is probably pointless.

If you was running 10.1.3 you can dirty flash this. You may have to go to apps and clean data for "contacts" and "contacts storage" (settings>apps>all and scroll to "contacts" open it and choose "clear data" - then go back to "contacts storage" and do the same thing.) if you get the android.process.acore error.
I tried a dirty flash and it didn't seem happy. Tried my idea and it was a little better, but since I had time, i did a full wipe again, flashed it and let Google restore my aops. So far, so good

Thanks for the input. I could try another launcher, but never have had to before. If I do, can I then disable voice search, and how?
I will try your suggestion for Link2SD.
I'm sorry that you sound upset. But actually, I gave the ROM 3 hours. As I use my tablet for aviation moving maps in the cockpit, I need something that works 100%. (And so I'm not going to hack it with Xposed.)
Jon's meets that requirement. Since you had put so much work into yours, I thought I would try it before I go flying again. Nothing personal.

Sorry my bad. Wasn't in a good mood that day.
GmsCore
QuickSearchBox
Google Now Launcher
Are all needed for the Google Now Launcher to work. Removing any of them will break the home launcher. It is why it hung when you removed QuickSearchBox. Without it the system had no home launcher to boot into.
As Google Now is a huge reason why I love (and many others) Jellybean I made sure it was working in this ROM.
If you are not a fan of Google Now, install a different launcher first before removing it. This way the ROM won't hang.

Thanks. It occurred to me later that there are philosophical differences between your ROM & Jon's.
Jon's is a spartan ROM, vanilla and free of Google stuff. (By design.)
Yours is more an "everyman's" ROM, built w/ the latest launcher and complete with mods for entertainment. (Ability to play Hulu Plus, better audio, etc.)
For my purposes in the cockpit, I need a bare bones ROM like Jon's. (I flash a stripped down version of GAPPS just so two of my aviation apps will install, and then I disable Play & Frameworks. Very lean. Very little running in the background while flying.)
If I knew enough how to do it, it would be interesting to take Jon's 10.1 ROM and fold only your performance enhancing features into it (i.e., keeping it Google free), to see the improvement and to see how stable it is. (That would also give an apples to apples comparison.) But since I don't know how, I'm content to wait for some other enterprising dev to do it someday.
Oh this seems very promising. I use mine for university. So a lot of reading, some surfing and mailing but also for entertainment as well. Most shows I watch on my nook so I will give your ROM probably a try starting this weekend even though I am not keen on Google now but I use NovaLauncher anyway.
Nice to see that there is still some development with this device.

IIRC, you had a problem with your Nook & the battery a while ago. What was the final problem & what was the final solution?
Is this Rom f2fs or ext4? Which should I Format to?

f2fs. But you can use ext4 if you like.
Possible bug: .MKV files with ac3 codec can't be played with MX player, vlc or BS player.
The Rom overall seems to be running smooth but unfortunaly not very liquid. At least not AS auch AS pure yellow kernel Rom. It's not too distracting though.

Really? Anyway you maybe able to share the video giving you problems? Every video I have is MKV with DTS or AC3 sound and they all work fine.
Well I won't share the video due to legal rights but write the given codec information: H264 MPEG-4 AVC , A52 Audio aka AC3 48khz 448 KB/s.
Another issue seems to be playing flash videos in Browser. They won't start. For example:
http://gizmodo.com/sonys-robotic-dogs-are-dying-a-slow-and-heartbreaking-d-1712160637
It started one time but as I watched it through I couldnt replay it. AS I try it now it won't even load. Also no possibility for fullscreen view while I do have thatat this page with my Smartphone.
It you cant recreate these issues I do a clean install again but maybe you do.
Bzw any recommendations for governors and i/o?

The linked flash video is working fine here. The fullscreen button doesn't show up but if you tap in the lower right corner it will go full screen.
As for the governors and i/o, the default settings are the best.
Updated the ROM. It's a lot smoother now.
Hi, I'm currently on PAC Kitkat 4.4.4 Rom. My Nook HD+ is suffering from 'Ghost touches', where touch inputs automatically registered without me touching the screen. I want to change to a faster and smoother Rom. My only uses for the Nook HD+ are Comic, epub, pdf reading and Watching 1080p movies using MXplayer. I'm confused between this rom and amace's CM 12.1 rom. In your opinion, which will be better for my use?
Hi, I was just wondering if there was a touchwiz rom that had everything that is replaceable via app store removed. But it keeps all core functions working (ie: status bar functions, lock screen functions, etc) I love the way touchwiz works, but it's slow, too slow. I have tried AOSP roms, and I get worse signal in all of them on various radios, plus I like the camera app better. If anyone knows of a rom like this, or can tell me what apps to remove from a stock rom to create it. That would be great, thanks!

I've been working on debloating my own rom, but I just haven't had time lately. There is a list of apps safe to remove floating around here, and there is also a flashable debloat tool, too. So far I have my rom down to about 800 mb.
