As the title says, is the MT4GS still a decent buy? I'm currently on a T-mobile g2 with cm 7.1 and while i absolutely love this phone, its just... slow. I love having the hardware keyboard, and I used a galaxy s 3 for two weeks (with swiftkey) and it still didnt satisfy me. For now, it looks like this is still the best tmobile device that has a keyboard.
If I get it, I will for SURE be rooting and getting cm9.1 as soon as possible, as it seems stable.
Theyre currently on ebay for between 150-250 depending on condition. I Have an upgrade available, think I should spring for this??
PS: T-MOBILE HURRY UP AND MAKE THE G3!

I still love mine after just over a year with it. Some of the ROMs are a bit quirky but some are super nice. I'd save the upgrade for something later. Mine is coming in December and I am tempted to go GSIII or Note II. If there is something awesome on the horizon I'll wait and keep this.

I personally moved from a G2 to a MyTouch 4G Slide.
The camera is great. I enjoyed the stock ROM for a bit before taking the plunge.
If you can get a unit for $150, that is a good deal. From what I understand, the MT4GS is now "an old phone."

I have a MT4GS and recentally my wife got a Samsung Relay, which roughly takes the same spot in the T-Mobile lineup. Here are the pros/cons that I've noticed so far:
The MT4GS has a slide mechanism for the keyboard that IMHO is far superior, easier to open and close without it jamming as the Relay seems to tend to do;
The MT4GS feels more solid than the Relay, although this "solid" feeling comes with a bit of weight to it, although I do have an upgraded battery;
The Relay seems to have a better battery life, although I haven't tested side by side to analyze this in detail;
The MT4GS has active ROM development, including IMHO a nice CM 9.1 release, as well as Sense roms. Samsung phones obviously don't have sense.
I believe the Relay has been rooted already, but I haven't seen any solid third party ROM development yet, although signs are there will be some.
The relay has a dual S4 core (reports that it had the S3 were premature on this point), so is a bit faster than the dual S3 in the MT4GS, but not by such a huge amount that it will blow you away.
The Relay has a slightly larger screen, but again, not by so much that it will amaze you.
The Relay has ICS as the stock rom, while the MT4GS has GB. While you can put ICS on the MT4GS, it is nice to have a reasonably recent stock rom to fall back to. The flip side, is, as noted above, the relay doesn't have third party roms, so you simply don't have a choice at the moment.
My overall opinion is that for someone that likes playing with their phone, the MT4GS is a good choice for a tmobile slider today, although moving forward, the relay MAY take it's place for modding.

Haah, I bought a little time ago that for 327,77 hardware+50 (shipment)+ 100 USD of duty..., because I prefer hardware keyboard, son-erric- is now good with Xperia -T LTE, but..without hardware keyboard. But Sony have really perfect build quality.
In EU this total price is normal for phone like MT4GS.....
B.R
El.
I would stay away from the cheaper ones. Our phone has had a track record of screens going bad, so if the seller is willing to let it go for a really low price, there may be problems.
Source: I've seen tons of phones on ebay with bad screens. Get one that's been refurbished, or only a few months old in great shape. Most refurbs look mint, because HTC usually replaces the whole top half of the phone when screens go bad

Go with the Galaxy Relay. If you want to keep your G2, upgrade to Andromadus test builds. They run really fast on my G2.

I only suggest our phone, because it has dev support and is much more affordable at this point. It takes at least a year for most android phones to start getting devs
Dont buy this phone, its stuck at Android 2.3.4 with no official updates. What roms are available are buggy as hell. The most common ones being.
#1) Battery drains too fast, too hot, or wont fully charge.
#2) USB file transfer dont work, or is very slow.
#3) GPS works and then doesnt work (hit or miss).
#4) Occasional graphical bugs that make Android 1.6 look attractive.

Inquisition has none of those problems. It's quite possibly the most capable ICS rom I've encountered so far. Don't generalize CM9 problems to all roms out there

Official updates- yes T-Mobile have vacation.... but- If you bought this phone and was broken- don't think taht all of this phone are same...you were out of luck-thats all. You can buy laptops, smartphone, for highest price from famous manufact.- and it's will be same. From year to year is worse with hardware quality no matter from which manufact.
Of course, you can make private ordering, they will do it to you- sony, nokia etc- for more than 10 K USD
Good Luck

7 roms in 10 months and most of them suffered from the problems mentioned above, most didnt last 3 days on my phone before going back to the stock rom. I need only see the first post of a rom being posted to see the list of what works and what doesnt work to turn me away. Lately, roms posted dont even have that list, so its "hey I just found this rom, absolutely no idea what works and doesnt work, have at it lab rats", so I typically ignore those roms because im not into blindly downloading a rom and re-installing all my apps, only to go back to stock.
I will give the Virtuous Inquisition rom a try, but im not holding my breath. I will be man enough to respond back and apologize should it kick ass.

Make sure you don't confuse what I said. Inquisition is the most capable. But if you want the most bug free ICS rom there is, it has to be Primadonna.
Well, this phone does the job for me quite well. I use cm9 because I love the extras it provides compared to the other ROMs.
If you do get this phone [or basically any phone] it is a good idea to grab a higher capacity battery just for convenience sakes. I have not done so yet because I bought the phone with an extra stock battery so that works for me. But yes, I did notice when I first got the phone, that the battery life is not as resilient as some others. Then again I do use stock bat.- the tweaked cm9 is making some headway on the drain problem with the community's help.
I recently looked into what other T-mobile phones are out there and as it turned out, my specific search query on phonescoop based on what I want in a phone only resulted in the mytouch 4g slide lol. So this is the phone for me and I am happy with it.
just wanted to add my 2 cents. i came from a rooted G2 running CM7, this phone was very capable, and i loved the housing, the keyboard, and the display. i dropped this phone so many times, but never had a cracked screen or cracked housing.
the only phone i wanted to upgrade to was the MT4GS, mainly because of the qwerty keyboard, and advanced camera.
even though the MT4GS is discontinued, i held out till my girlfriend got an iphone, and she gave me her MT4GS, only reason she got rid of it, was because of random reboots, constant freezing etc.
i happily took it, rooted it, and am really enjoying the phone. my favorite thing being the camera. only thing i could ask for is slightly more system memory, but i really can't complain. the MT4GS seems more capable hardware wise then a lot of newer phones on the market.
:highfive:

Wow. Someone is full of themselves. Do you understand what XDA is founded on? Developers helping developers. Atleast those devs are doing something and trying to help out. It's people like you who show no appreciation for the devs work and just leech off them that makes devs not want to do it anymore. If you don't like any of the ROMs, do something about it. Either help them make it better or make your own ROM. I recommend the second, because then you'll see how disheartening it is for someone to bash your work that you spent hours and hours on.
Works well for me, no complaints

With all due respect, if you're getting no further into a link for a ROM than the 1st page you're not doing any of the research necessary to even find out if any of those initially listed glitches HAVE been fixed. And if not fixed in the original upload you'll miss those fixes & workarounds that have been discovered & explained by one of the other very capable developers we're lucky enough to have reside here & kindly teaching the rest of us. You TOO, if you don't mind doing some reading. Some ROMS have a couple hundred pages of research & further development added after the fact with things added for us very often in an individual obscure post. Virtuous Infinity is a PERFECT example. Download the things in the OP and you'll think the ROM kinda sux for it's length of development. But if you follow everything through to the end and follow all the directions you'll end up with a ROM you can make a nandroid of that will blow you away. To some extent, they are ALL like that.
MANY people come to XDA with a new phone with the idea that it's like going to a GM plant and waiting for just the one you've always looked for to roll out the door & drive away in. In actuality it's more like a trip to Lowes where you can take some idea you love into the store & ask the experts what tools you need, how to use them & why and end up with something to be VERY proud of. Of course that's JMHO.....
I've been using the GS3 since it came out and have had this weird back and forth opinion of TouchWiz and AOSP. I was just wanting to get the opinion of the rest of the community to see if anyone feels the same way I do. Opinion Below:
For some strange reason, I feel better using the Galaxy S III with the TouchWiz UX interface. I used it for a number of months with CM10, but when I was using that interface, I didn't feel like I was using a my Samsung Phone. Even though I had a Galaxy Nexus and loved my time with it (before i dropped it in the river...), the same interface on this particular phone just didn't feel "right". Like I was emulating a completely different version of android. But the moment I loaded CleanRom 5.5.1, all the feeling of the GS3 came back. I can't really explain it, but it just feels good. the software goes to well with the screen size, the way I hold the phone, and (sorry, but) I now love S Voice more than Google's Voice Commands. i can set timers, text people, set events for work and S Voice locks onto my voice so much quicker than when it's older versions.
Again, this is just my opinion, but I would love to hear your reasons for picking one over the other, what killer thing you can't live without, or even why you don't care. I'm down for any conversation.
me too. i tried all the aosp roms and miui. and always find myself going back to stock touchwiz. which is funny. i remember before i bought the phone all i heard was "the only bad thing is it has touchwiz UI" and " touchwiz sucks" and i absolutely love it.
i prefer AOSP
TW but using Nova Launcher and Google Now instead of S Voice.

Basically CM/AOSP/AOKP is the Nexus with better hardware. If you want the same thing but faster that is where you go. If want all the bells and whistles you go TW. It is what you looking for. I stick with TW where all works and run all the 4.1.1/4.1.2/4.2/4.2.1 apps that we can port. I want everything on my $600 device to work . That includes every option that came on the phone. To me breaking the phone to go fast is not an option. Newer options are worthless if all you can do is call if you are lucky. I could call with a brick in the 70's.

I didn't really think of it in those terms, but that's pretty much dead on. with CM10, i did a lot more CPU management, tweaking, and seeing what little things i could change to make the phone break the laws of physics (didn't do it). And with TouchWiz. I kinda just sit back and use my phone as a phone. call, text, watch youtube. I still like to keep my titanium backups synced to dropbox, but not much more.
Random, but every time I load a new ROM that I've never used before, the first thing I do is call one of my parents. Always need to make sure I can send a phone call.
I don't mind touchwiz all that much. Couldn't stand sense or moto blur but tw the isn't all that bad. Throw on apex the launcher and I'm good to go.

Man I'm probably old enough to be your daddy. I been playing and testing for some of the best in the business for a while. If it broke it is not cutting edge. Making broke go faster makes no sense to me. You should be able to make what works go faster and still work. Being on the cutting edge of broke is for the devs not for the masses. Once stable go for it. But if your wife, girlfriend or parents can't get hold of you cause your on cutting edge of broke you have a problem.

I agree completely about you being old.
Between the Data not working on CM10.1 for the first week or so, and little errors that come with devs trying to port other phones' features into their ROM's, I was prompted to go back to CleanROM and just take a breath from all the flashing and rebooting. I'll be looking for that 4.1.2 update. but I'll stay away from the real crazy stuff.

I'm currently on Beans stock deodex with Ziggy's latest kernel @1.72/384. Kinda craps mods and Moto's International VRTheme. All Gapps 4.1-4.2 inverted. Rock stable and running 6500 Quads. Everything works including call recording.
I've been flashing for awhile.
At this point (actually - Nov 1st) I've been CleanROM only. Everything "works" + mixed with WasabiWa's themes - I'm a happy man.
This is the tamest my crack flashing has ever been. It's almost scary. TW JB is pretty nice...

I can't imagine AOSP being much faster than TW with the necessary apps frozen. On my old phones AOSP was definitely the way to go, but the S3 is so powerful anyways, and TW isn't very heavy anymore.
And, in all honesty, the TW Camera app alone is worth it for me to stay on TW. All the non-TW camera apps pale in comparison, both in quality and options.

Haha.. made me laugh
I honestly can't stand TW. I have it on my wife's phone because she likes the camera better than the AOSP. But it just seems like TW just tried to be too pretty and to me it didn't make me happy. Even though AOSP has its little bugs, I just like it better. There are no widgets that I'm OMG about really like I was with Sense, for instance their music player, calendar, clock, and Facebook for HTC sense app... of course I prefer sense 3.5 style widgets a little more than 4. So I just stick with MIUI because that was the AOSP that made me fall in love with AOSP. Used to have the Dinc and Dinc2 and it ran flawlessly on both. Just pure love.

This.
I loaded up AOKP and tried that out for awhile. It was lightning fast on pretty much everything, but I just didn't feel like I was using my GS3 that I had fallen in love with. I'm on the stock JB OTA with Kindacrap Mods 2.6 flashed. The small tweaks in there make the phone for me. Everything's a little bit faster and once I found out that I could make the home button faster (my biggest complaint since owning the phone) simply by disabling the S-Voice polling, just more love to be had.
Being able to set separate lock screen and homescreen wallpapers that don't move (used to love the movement, but not so much anymore) is great. S-Beam is awesome. The premium suite will (hopefully) be a wonderful tweak. Samsung and TouchWiz have come a long way since my first Android phone: the Captivate on AT&T.
To me it is not about speed at this point but stability. Top end devices today do not need to go any faster then when you take it out of the box. I still scratch my head when I see people over clocking their S3. This thing already runs faster then some laptops that people own. Also, can't prove anything is faster when overclocking except running a benchmark. Otherwise they all feel the same!
I love the AOSP experience and options but it still has bugs that are important to me on the S3 so I am forced to use TW. Luckily TW is not that bad on the S3 and works well. If an AOSP Rom was bug free I surely would be running it. And don't believe the hype when people tell you AOSP has no bugs. It can run stable but has bugs that prevent me from using it as a daily.
Running Pure's TW Rom right now it works great. Already has part of multi-window cooked in with the bar on the left and all your apps showing. Hopefully next release will actually have the multi window. He also said that he has the ink effect on the lockscreen for the next rls as well. He is always pushing the bar with new features so I am pretty content right now with TW.
CM10.1 kangs have been nothing but stable for me since I got my S3 a few weeks ago. I like the whole interface and experience; hated TW. Call me lucky but I'm 100% satisfied.
I've gone back and forth between AOSP and TW-based ROMS. Besides stability, I do enjoy the extra features that are on the stock framework.
I'm just curious to see how developers will utilize the source code into their ROMS, now that it's out.
I like AOSP if it works. I would easily be on cm10.1 if everything worked, but until then, I think I have to use my phone as a phone

Same here. I ran AOSP on my OG Epic and while I liked it for what our offered, constant struggles with features broken/ not working made me steer clear of it on GS3 until ALL phone functions work as well as they do on TW.
I like CM and all, but what about AOKP? Where are all the mods to CM and AOKP? Things like Avatar, PACman, Jellybear, etc..

i really don't want to sound like an asshole but... this question is stupid
We had no forum for the first 6 months of the phone's life, and given that Android phones go from hot to meh in about 6 months, we lost our prime development time. It's only because of the work of a half dozen developers over on IRC that this phone has any development at all. Without it, it would already be dead and forgotten. So be sure to tell those guys how much you appreciate them.
Beats the cr*p out of cheap themed recycled TouchWiz hacks with a ton of buggy scripts thrown in. That was (is and always will be) the reality for SK4G owners. TouchWiz blows... big time.
I have CM9 running and I'm happy as a clam.
As for customizing CM, that's as easy as can be. You don't need any dev help to theme a rom or run scripts. What you do need is the heavy lifting that the Apex guys have been doing.
Furthermore, their "one rom" can guarantee this device a very long and productive life. Not only does a working CM10 keep the software current, it opens the door for future updates.
And, if we could pick one rom, we all want CM anyhow...
Also, there's really nothing stopping you from forking Team Apex and building a custom CM build. Have at it.
I'm a huge Samsung relay supporter. I had the phone for three months until I had to put in a warranty claim. I borrowed a galaxy s3 from my friend. and though the switch was only supposed to be temporary...but.I have kept the s3 since. I miss the relays keyboard but the s3 gets way more support.
When I had my relay I found myself craving an aosp/ touchwiz fusion. instead of just vanilla android cm10. and the galaxy s3 had just that. right now I get a full touch wiz experience with aosp messaging . and the vanilla look of cm10. and I still have all the Samsung motion controls. 0 bloatware. couldn't be happier. the moment the relay get a similar Rom...I will gladly come back. the relay hard ware is very capable.

So..
You want to root the stock rom, remove the apps you don't want, theme it (JRummy's RomToolbox will do that), and install a new messenging app?
And, that justifies a "rom" release from a "developer"?
Ok...
But, you could do that yourself.. easily.
Thanks, didn't know that.

It really grinds my gears when people say this. You're not doing anyone a favor by "coming back/leaving" this phone.
Also what you're asking for can be easily done and will most likely not be done for you, unless there's a lot more devs to go around.
This thread needs to be closed.

On the contrary, most dev action usually picks up about a year after the phone has been released. This is the logical upgrade for most 4G Slide and G2 veterans that still want a keyboard. So just wait for their contracts to expire...
Anyone else find themselves bored with the Note 5? My device is rooted, slick wrapped, whole shabang but I just like eh...what's next. Thinking of moving to S6 edge plus. ..any thoughts

How do you get bored with a phone? You mean you get bored cuz you have nothing to do? How does a phone make your life less boring? I suggest you pick up an activity other than holding a phone. I suggest you use your a S-pen and draw something to pass time.

Nope.
Give it done time until the experimental roms come out with all new features and a ton of instability. You become less bored and use tons of time

I know the itch trust me, but much like many of my failed relationships. Im gonna try and make this one work. Flashing tends to tide me over, the downside is we can't flash anything but TW based roms.. Flashing CM on my Note 4 gave me a little bit of that new phone feeling.
I know the problem. You're bored because your phone is fully functioning, great battery life, great screen etc etc. What you need is a phone that has compromises. Then you can spend hours and hours trying to fix issues with root and xposed and stuff like that

Its not really wasted when you can help another user find a new way to love their device.. This certainly isn't any more useless than the new threads that get created everytime there is an update, I mean we do have stickied posts that speak on that very topic.
To the OP I would ask what your expectation is with the Edge Plus, do you think the loss of the pen will be overshadowed by the edge features gained? Why not try that new LG?
Trust me I know the struggle. I can't wait for cm builds so other rom maintainers can cook some other roms up. Tw based roms suck. But better than stock.

I wouldn't say TouchWiz based Rom suck, they just aren't stock Android. I like both but TouchWiz can pretty much do the heavy lifting of android plus the added features Samsung gives it.

I know how you feel, but you will never be satisfied in life with anything at this rate... Slow down, there is nothing worth upgrading to over the Note5 anytime in the near future. Just use and learn the features of the phone. I fell into a rut for several years of always tweaking, optimizing, flashing roms nonstop and sidegrading devices constantly and I finally realized I had spent 90% of the time on my phone, PC, laptops, etc.. just tweaking and configuring them for "ultimate" performance and only 10% of the time actually using the devices. Often times reliability was an issue because I constantly had to reconfigure my apps and programs and I just never had what I needed when I needed it because I had just installed some ROM the night before.. I've learned to cut back and just simply use the phone more to do real things. I'll still tweak a new device to my liking, but err on the side of stability instead of every untested tweak in the book, and once it is setup and working well, I just learn to not touch it until the next device limiting myself to once a year upgrades.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
I get bored quick too but, I just got the note 5 so, I'll hold it at least till January. And then jump on something new. Coming from iPhone 6 BTW
Not bored with mine.
S6 Edge Plus is similar to the Note 5 - the pen. I had a S6 Edge and liked it but had a Jump to use so got a iPhone 6S for something different since I had the Note 4 before the S6 Edge. I figured the regular 6S would be to small which it was. The plus was on back order so I got the Note 5. I would have got the Nexus 6p if Tmobile carried it. I've never owned a Nexus phone. I like the Note 5 though just not a lot different then s6. I try and switch manufacturers so I don't get bored as quick.

Flash a rom, do some mods, download some apps...
Install xposed and experiment lol. That's what I do when I get bored
Install wanam and the limits are almost endless
This is just my opinion but here me out. I had all the flagship devices the last 3 years or so. Huge addiction, bought all the cool accesories, flashed the latest roms daily, always messing with my phone to "fix it". Had an iPhone 6+ most of last year and while it was alright cause for the most part it just worked, I missed android so when the Note5 came out I picked it up. Come to find out rooting breaks Samsung Pay forever, and here I am with a stock Note5 and content. It's fast, amazing display, quick charging wired and wirelessly, with a great camera. When I find myself bored I install a couple different launchers and tweak some icon packs to help curb the addiction. That's just me though. I'm quite content with a non-rooted Note5.
so i just found this today on
xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/orig-development/cyanogenmod-13-galaxy-s6-t3269984
it's still possible we may actually have a alpha on our notes before EOY just figured I'd put this up for you all

Ive been following their progress as well, I'll say its a lot closer than the exynos Note 4 ever got.

Very exciting, I hope one of our devs will try and port it to our device
The sooner I get off of touchwiz the better in my opinion
i was just about to say that. i miss the note 4 days.
i used to flash mad roms. never again ill buy an xynos device or whatever you call it
but arter said he's not working on one for the note 5

You'll most likely have to switch to a different brand. Remember, they make phones for the world, not just us modders. Their in house processor is literally the best processor that has ever been, ever. No other processor can offer the power and longevity. If CM can harness that as well, that would be great but I highly doubt it.

@RaymanFX maintains the Note 4 (N910C Exynos), he has a successful build for CM12 and CM13 aswell

Just because Arter isnt making a build for the Note 5 doesn't mean there won't be a build for the Note 5.
Folks are getting all stressed out about this but frankly this is better news than most people should have been expecting, the writing has been on the wall for awhile now in regards to the ease of porting aosp based roms on to Exynos devices.
The rumblings started back in 2013. I just think it's bad business to buy a device that costs as much as this one with an expectation that your every need be tended to by the mod community.
It's also getting to the point that you end up losing functions of the phone's now by unlocking bootloaders. They are being crafty with how new features don't work rooted or unlocked etc, it's all to discourage the modding community, hell, last I checked android pay doesn't work on AOSP. I think they are tightening things little by little.

Look at the root situation where it was handled at the kernel level. I can't really blame them to tell the truth, its sort of expected that cellular companies and manufacturers would not make it easy for the dev community. It's like a cat and mouse game, the cat will always be the cat and the same goes for the mouse.
Heck tactics like these have even bled over into computers. My Samsung laptop has secure boot firmware in the motherboard so I can no longer dual boot linux. Only way to run linux is to wipe windows off or run a live cd...
I'd definitely give it a whirl. Not sure if I'd stick with it though, I like the camera and the Spen features on this phone too much.
It's nice to see that we'll get the choice though.

Now would be a perfect time since me spen has been sent off for warranty evaluation..
my spen slot is messed up so something different would be nice
Sure hope one of our devs chime in and let us know they are working on porting this for us!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::beer::beer::beer::beer:
From what I understand as soon as it works on the s6 it should really simple to port over. Because essentially the note 5 is a oversized s6 with a pen

Yes and no. It's working on the S6 but we can't use it on the Note 5. Not yet anyways. Still need a kernel for the Note 5 unfortunately.
I mean we are close none the less which makes me happy as there isn't much in the way of roms for my note
This does tell me it may at least boot up before Christmas I mean we still have 15 days till the year is over so it can still happen
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/guide-dualboot-cm13-tw-t3271545
IMO, if you're going to use CM, why did you buy a note? CM typically doesn't support the pen features at all. (please correct me if I am wrong)
