How to root on cm 12s - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know how?

Same as on 11. Unlock the.bootloader and you're set to go.
Since there are a lot of guides and I'm on the phone, I think you can figure it out. Just use the search

It's especially the same process no matter what firmware you're on. Unlock bootloader, flash TWRP, flash SuperSU to get root. It's all in my guide here:

You'll also need to look at the last question in the FAQ:

This seems to be the best rooting guide available. This is the guide I used. It even has a video to show you how to root.

You can also use Cyanogenmod Wiki:

Just don't flash Cyanogenmod Flash whichever you want

No impact on my data and apps (bootloader still locked).
I'm running stock ICS on i9023.
Credits go to saurik who found the exploit (https://github.com/saurik/mempodroid)

[Q] Root method

So I ordered a Moto G from Amazon UK yesterday.
Since I am planning on rooting it as soon as I see it, I have a question.
Is it possible to root it by unlocking the bootloader, flashing CWM, and installing SuperSU.zip, or I have to use one of those two methods from the Android Development forum?
Thanks!
Also check the thread by cooptx in the general thread

So this method is actually the same method that I described, only difference is that you flash other file for root.
Thanks, I will try to root it this way when I get it.
Atm there are no methods to root w/o unlock bl.
You guys have some news about this w/o bl stuff?
Install TWRP, reboot, install root from the app menu.
After some time I decided to simply to flash CM (as it has superuser built-in) and not to mess with rooting the stock firmware itself. The only issue currently is the non-working gps on CM on my device. Hope a fix comes soon

I rooted my Moto G the same way as you described. Unlock bl, flash cwm recovery, flash moto g specific supersu.zip.
Just make sure you install KitKat before u flash cwm and supersu. Or else you have to go back to stock recovery before you can install KitKat OTA which I had to do and is quite confusing and easily prevented. KitKat ota needs stock recovery. Good luck.

Question about CM updates on Indian version. [re:eek:TA vs Manual Updates]

I apologize if this has been asked, a brief search didn't show anything related.
So due to the recent development it seems like handsets sold in India won't be getting CM updates, but users can manually perform updates, correct?
Has anyone been doing manual updates over the OTA updates? Is the process tedious?

Since there's no loss of warranty when you unlock and tweak this phone, Indian users would be better off doing so and flashing each update like you would flash any other ROM. It's a simple 5 minute process

Flashing a Rom on OnePlus one will clear the internal storage?
Nope. But unlock you bootloader as soon as you get the device since that wipes everything

It's simple. You download the OTA, boot into recovery, flash the OTA, that's it.

No, the only time the internal storage is wiped is when you unlock the bootloader.

So back it up to your PC first. This information is all easily available here on XDA, so a bit of research when buying the phone would have revealed that the best time to unlock the bootloader is when you first receive it.

Why would one need to unlock the bootloader? (not a newbie, just gimme a quick response like cause you need to root or whatever)
I should be getting one One on Monday so this kinda stuff is good to know.

Even if you don't want to root the device having the bootloader unlocked is insurance in case something goes wrong. If for any reason you need to recover the device, the fastboot images are the best way, and top flash those you need an unlocked bootloader. Just unlock it when you receive the phone, there's no benefit to leaving it locked, and there's no downfall to unlocking it.

Good point! Mind pointing me to a link on how I should unlock the bootloader? If you cant thats okay too, Ill search around.
I should say I am quite impressed by the people hanging in these forums, way more friendlier than the S4 forums.

Well, without unlocking, you can't root and flash ROMs and tweak your device in any way. Plus, you don't lose warranty. So why not do it?

Try flashing your stock firmware again via Odin. If you had 4.3 with the unlockable bootloader then flash that, if you had anything newer than that then you'll have to flash exactly what you had or newer because once you took the 4.3 with the bootloader that can't be unlocked then that means you will NEVER EVER be able to go back to an older version, you can ONLY use exactly what you had or newer.

Root phone but keep stock OS?

First time owning a device that isn't unlocked, rooted, and with a custom OS. I'm happy with the stock experience, but the ads on apps and search and webpages are driving me crazy. I'm also not a huge fan of not being able to use Titanium Backup to save my exact configuration. Can I unlock and root the device and still receive OTAs? Or do I need to sideload them? Really looking forward to installing AdAway.

Sideload, it's simple enough
What about using Magisk boot image patch method instead?

a) That post is 7 month old when we are already at May security patch and not advisable to use patches which cannot be verified
b) best bet is to check out the guide threads https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3-xl/how-to/guide-pixel-xl-android-9-0-pie-unlock-t3857195
Just sideload, learn something new

Thanks for the heads up. That thread seems to point to the magisk install guide here: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html
Can anyone confirm that this method, under "Boot Image Patching" works as described for Pixel 3?
Want to make sure I understand the steps before running into issues I've encountered in other devices. Appreciate the patience.
