Hey guys, got my Moto X Play delivered on Tuesday and so far I'm loving nearly every aspect of it, the camera and the large battery are definitely an improvement over the Moto X 2014 that I upgraded from. However, one issue that seems to keep bothering me is the wifi. Basically it seems to constantly drop the connection for no reason at all, my Internet at home is provided by virgin media and the virgin hub is in modem mode and I'm using a TRENDnet router to broadcast wifi. No other devices in the house seem to have any issues connecting with this setup.
The moto x play seems to connect fine to both the 5ghz and 2.4ghz networks but after a couple of minutes they just seem to loose signal. The wifi icon in the status bar doesn't change to imply that this has happened but chrome or Netflix, etc will just get very unresponsive. The phone has been restarted several times since I got it, I have also tried 'forgetting' the network and re-entering the password (on both 5 and 2.4ghz) and I have also tried the setting in lollipop to change the wifi type from auto to 5ghz only and to 2.4ghz only but nothing seems to have any effect. Does this sound like teething problems that could settle down to anyone else or does it sound like a faulty device?
Has anyone else had any issues with this phone?
I had these issues when I bought my tablet and thought maybe it was the tablet. Then I tested the tablet at my brother house who had different service provider and it worked fine.
So maybe give it a go at a resturant or a friends house and see what happens.
P.S I was with Virgin Media aswell when I had these issues no idea if they are connected.

Thanks Geordie Affy, i'm actually going to be at my parents this weekend so i'll give it a go on there and see if the situation improves
Hoping it settles down as i really don't want to go to the effort of returning it to amazon
Its most likely your router not your phone causing these issues.
No problem ... keep us posted [emoji106]

Ok so, bit of an update.
We had a visit to the mother in laws last night and i tested this issue with their wifi (provided by BT, using all original BT equipment) and still got the same issue. I'm concerned now that this is a problem with the handset.
Any other thoughts on what could be causing it or what i could try to cure it?
Another bit of info i've discovered recently is that even on 5ghz when connected to wifi the phone really seems to struggle to multitask (from a web perspective) i.e. if i'm updating apps on the play store i can't successfully browse the web on chrome and vice versa.

I want to confirm that I have wifi issues too. Just received my device and wifi it's not working. I never had any issues with other devices in my house and I have lots of them. Phone seems to be scanning indefinitely.
Have a look if you have the same exclamation mark over the wifi icon?!
Any updates on your device so far?
No, mine is even more frustrating in that the icon remains the same whether I'm connected or not. I've spoken to a guy at Motorola on live chat this morning and as I'd done all the things he had suggested already he recommended doing a factory reset. At least that's one of the big advantages of this phone is that I can backup all my stuff to my sd card and eject it before reseting. Should make it a whole lot easier.
The only thing that seems to have made any kind of difference, and really, it could just be coincidence (as I don't know how these things work at a scientific level) but I reset the router this morning I. E. Turned it off waited a minute or two and turned it back on again and that seemed to improve things slightly. In fact I thought it had cured it as this morning I was unable to even get through one song on Spotify but since the reset I managed to get through an album and a b8t before the connection borked. Since then the signal had dropped out once or twice but not on the same scale as before.
Debating whether to bother with the factory reset now...
I somehow got my wifi working but now I am browsing and whole browsing experience no matter what website I am in is stuttering and lagging .Simple browsing in Google Play store remains the same jerky ,same thing observed on facebook app.
Even my friends Sony M works much smoother. I have tried both H+ 4g and wifi performance very inconsistent. Don't know what to think
Wifi is definitely slower on my Moto X Play than it was on my Galaxy S6. Just going by memory (which could be wrong), I want to say that my LG G3 and Galaxy S5 had better wifi than the X Play too. I only had it for half a day, but the 3rd gen Moto G even seemed better.
I do have an odd issue with the wifi that is annoying but easily fixable (thankfully). Every time the phone boots up, I get the exclamation mark over the wifi icon and it just runs off my mobile data. If I toggle the wifi off and back on, then it connects properly to the wifi and no more exclamation mark. I have to do this every time I restart the phone though.
Hopefully an update will fix this.
How odd it is . I was playing with Moto G 3 gen and it was smoother that Moto X play.
What I am now finding strange is at my parents the wifi has seemed fine! However amazon are already sending me a replacement unit today. Not sure what to do now.

Yeah I thought it would be the case. Had issues like this but never figured out why it happened tbh. Fortunarlely after a couple of months we changed our internet to BT and worked a treat (Minus BT going down haha)

I've had issues with this as well. Appears to be connected but no data transmits while every other device works fine. Only happening on one old router not all. May have something to do with Motorola dropping the "ac" WiFi standard on this phone. More annoying is the phone being slow to pick up a cellular signal after leaving WiFi. I've had this happen often and for as long as 5 minutes.
I got my Motorola x play about two weeks and I've just noticed a few Wi-Fi issues. I'm connecting it too the super hub router provided by virgin media on the 5ghz signal and it was fine when I noticed if I held the phone by the top half in the palm of my hand instead of the bottom half, the signal strength shown by the icon in the top right hand corner would drop by half. Is anyone aware if the phones Wi-Fi aerial is on the upper reaches of the phone?
I too have noticed this. Thought it was all in my head which is why I hadn't mentioned it previously lol.
I haven't so far been able to replicate the issues you guys are facing with WiFi. Performance seems to be in general at least on par with my late Galaxy S4.

This could also be a Android 5.x issue. I'm facing similar problems on my LG G2 running SlimLP. WiFi and also cellular seems to be dropping for no apparent reason and I have to manually reconnect. Interestingly though, my Nexus 7 WiFi 2013 doesn't have these issues running UberCM 5.1.1.
other problems with WiFi.
I have this strange problems. See if someone else has the same.
I used googled maps for GPS me to destination. When I am driving WiFi cut off and the phone use data. When I am arrive at destination. I go to McDonald. The phones can't connect to free WiFi at McDonald's. Even this is a saved network. I turn off then on the WIFI, still not connect.
I have a new Galaxy S6 on 5.1.1, never screwed with.. I am having an issue where when I am on WiFi, and then leave WiFi coverage, mobile data will not turn on until I put the phone in airplane mode and take it back out again.
This is VERY annoying. I have disabled, reenabled and disabled the smart switch feature (checking for quality of wifi before using) with no luck. I've rebooted, cleared cache, and am about to do a factory reset. Having already spent the time to move in to the phone, that is not a desirable thing to do.
The problem is consistent on both 3G and LTE network modes. Phone calls still work, as does SMS mode text messages (VZW Messenger fails back when data isnt available, and gripes about it to me). a 1x phone call in non LTE areas wont even trigger it to work. The Icon next to the signal will say LTE or 3G, but no arrows will appear under it.
I'm at a loss.
As an aside, I'm getting pretty damned mediocre battery life too. Doing nothing with the phone from 6AM till 11AM nets a 20% loss. Generally, the phone gets through the day, but i've yet to hit a busy day with it. Android System is listed as the culprit in battery management. Location Services disabled. WiFi on, full bars 3G, no LTE where I see this battery life. (Work) Tower has EHRPD enabled for LTE hand off though. Could the phone be on a constant hunt for LTE?
I have been having the same issue. My phone, my wife's, and my son's are all doing the same thing. I have talked with verizon and they said Samsung needs to push an update. I have contacted Samsung and they told me they have not had anyone report this problem. The verizon community forum, https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/900309, is one of a few that talks of this issue. I am getting frustrated that Verizon employee tells me it is Samsung's problem, Samsung says there is no problem. Mine started after the last software update. Verizon suggested a factory reset and cache wipe, which I did and this did not help.
Hi
I bought my honor 8 two months ago, and it was working fine until this morning. The internet through the wi-fi connection suddenly became slow. It works for my girlfriend's phone, and both of our laptops, and my phone works fine in other wi-fi networks. This problem is only with our home wi-fi. I checked the speed with speedtest app, and after about two minutes of waiting, it showed the right speed, but surfing is painfully slow.
I did a hard reset on the router, and a cache wipe on my phone, but did not hard reset my phone, because it works on other wi-fi networks.
So my question is: what do you think is the problem?
Thank you for your answers!
Same problem
I have exactly same problem!
Are you using the Nougat beta on your device?
No, I'm using 6.0. Also I did a hard reset on my phone this morning, out of frustration, and still no luck.
I'm not seeing a way to pull up this info right now, but the b360 (Nougat latest beta for frd-l04) release notes mentioned that the "small-packet" wifi problem was "solved" with the latest beta. I updated to it via Charles method and the problem is solved for me. I had it in M6, N7 b320, but it went away with b360.
The way this particular problem manifested was during say, an app update of ~10 or more MB , you would only get about 300-400Kb at a time, so it was ~10 times as slow as it should be on wifi. If you turned off wifi you could see the difference because it would only take a single 10MB chunk to do the update. I don't know if it's the same problem, but it sure was a nice help for my case.
The strange thing is that my connection is normal on paper (speedtest shows the normal speed, but after about 2 mins of waiting), and download speed seem ok too. E.g. I updated one of my apps, and there was about 1 min waiting also, but then download was fast. But surfing and stuff, is slow, but just on my home wi-fi, and just for me. I it tried with different phone, it was working fine, and I tried my phone on other wi-fi network, and that was also fine. That's why I don't understand it.

My phone always showed as normal on Speedtest, which is why I think speedtest is worthless for testing speed ;. What if speedtest is just testing ping response? I don't know what it's doing, but it's a blackbox app that does what it does.
I would be more interested in app behavior results. Browsers should populate pages quickly on wifi, and if they do, then there's no good reason to go to a "speedtest". If they don't well, there's your real speedtest. Or, download something fairly big from the app store (it doesn't have to be anything you'll keep or use, just something over 10MB) and watch each chunk / packet. If they're < 500K each, then you've got that problem that I had.
Google Play uses TCP and UDP 5228 port. Maybe there is a limitation on that port. Ookla speedtest uses only port 8080. I'm not sure what's going on there. I could always see the problems on 5228.
I recently got this phone and find the wi-fi performance slow. My old xperia z2 could get the speeds I'm paying for which is 74mbs but the honour gets about 40mbs
Thank you for all your advices, but I honestly tried everything. I hard resetted my router and phone, I went through all the settings, and still the same. At this point I'm just waiting for a miracle.

Have you tried connecting to another WiFi network to see if you experience the same problem? If you do then I would contact Honor directly and ask them for assistance. They will probably request that you send your device back to them for repairs.

I tried my phone on two different wi-fi networks, and it was working fine. The problem is with only my home wifi, and only for me (2 other devices get normal speeds). And it started suddenly about 2 days ago, without any settings change in either on the router nor phone.
Since then I factory resetted the router, and the phone, and I've gone through pretty much every settings I could, and still no change.
I contacted my ISP today, they will send someone to look at my router. If they find out that the router is fine, then I contact Honor. But I really hope that the router is the problem.
I will write down the outcome of this strange problem, once it get fixed, maybe it will be help for someone in the future.
Thanks again for all your advices.

Do you have a dual band router? If you do try switching to a different WiFi band, could be that the WiFi band your Honor 8 is connected to is congested.

I tried this afternoon with an another android 6.0 phone (A5 2016) that was working fine in the past, and now it gets the same reception as mine. So I'm sure that the router is the problem.
I update the situation after the repair.

In that case there is definately something wrong with your router. Hopefully your ISP can fix it for you.
To Those Who Know More Than Me (that's pretty much all of you),
I purchased an unlocked H830 to use on Cricket Wireless (and hopefully root, but that's another story). When I first popped in the Cricket SIM, it found cellular signal as well as data within a minute or two. All was well, it seemed.
But this weekend, a couple of days later, data began to not work in Chrome, Maps, the Google feed, ESPN app, etc. Here's the weird part: the signal indicator shows 3, 4, even 5 bars and 4G active. Speedtesting shows I'm getting 2-3 MBps--not great, but not unusual on Cricket. So why does the phone pull internet but not distribute it to the apps trying to use it? Maybe 20% of the time, data will work, but that's obviously not enough for a small business owner like myself who is out and about constantly. Calls and SMS work just fine, so I don't think it's a corrupted/damaged SIM card.
I have deleted and reset the APN a couple of times. I have restarted the phone. It is running H83020a, since I manually downgraded from c in order to try and root. Strangely, it now says no new update is found--are those locked to the T-Mobile network?
Does anyone have a solution to this? I'm quite frustrated. Everything else about the G5 (barring the complicated root process) is working fine, and I want this to be my daily driver once the data issue is resolved. Thanks!
My pixel (from google not verizon) has been having lots of LTE connection issues on verizon. It will get stuck on no lte connection or stuck on 3g. Toggling airplane mode sometimes helps and it will then connect to LTE, sometimes I have to reboot the phone and then it connects to LTE.
I've already completely restored the phone to stock (i have flashed both slots with the factory image from google, pretty much the same as these instructions: http://www.droidviews.com/restore-google-pixel-xl-to-stock-flash-factory-images/)
Even after that I still have LTE connection issues, pretty much once every other day I am restarting the phone to get it to connect to LTE. It was working fine and then just one day it randomly stopped connecting to LTE totally. I thought maybe it was the rom I was on, which prompted me to restore it to stock. It could connect after that but its pretty flakey.

did you check with verizon first?
I had the same problem. I bought my phone off of the Google Play Store and am using it on the Verizon network. The phone will randomly lose 4G and won't send or recieve SMS/MMS messages. This seems to happen more often when I am moving quickly (car, train, etc). Maybe it has something todo with tower transitions. I tried everything: factory reset, reflashed the stock images, relocked the bootloader, got a new sim card, talked with a level 2 tech at Verzion who told me he reset my account. Last week I contacted Google and they did a RMA. The new phone still has the issues. I went back into Verzion and they told me there was nothing more they could do on their end. They said to convince Google to do another RMA but with a Verzion Pixel. I have my fingers crossed that Android O fixes the issues, but I'm not holding my breath.
Your mom.
Same issue. popping sim card out then back in is a quicker way to get 4g back than restarting.
